<strong>Pausanias</strong>: <strong>Travel</strong>s <strong>Writ<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ancient</strong> <strong>Greece</strong><br />

literation that reflects pronunciation, but where I am deal<strong>in</strong>g with ancient<br />

names that are aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> use today I have opted for an ‘archais<strong>in</strong>g’ transliteration<br />

which makes the similarity between ancient and modern names<br />

immediately apparent (e.g. Nauplia <strong>in</strong>stead of Nafplio, Heraion <strong>in</strong>stead of<br />

Ireo).<br />

It has been more than ten years s<strong>in</strong>ce I started to give serious thought<br />

to <strong>Pausanias</strong>’ Periegesis: these years led me from my undergraduate days<br />

to postgraduate studies and through the early stages of an academic<br />

career. Many debts are <strong>in</strong>curred on such a route, beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g with academic<br />

staff and fellow students at the Department of <strong>Ancient</strong> History <strong>in</strong> Graz,<br />

particularly Klaus Tausend, Günter Stangl and Kaja Harter-Uibopuu,<br />

who first taught me to <strong>in</strong>terpret and appreciate the Greek landscape and<br />

its historical significance. Once I was ready to explore <strong>Greece</strong> on my own,<br />

Christiane Re<strong>in</strong>hard patiently accompanied me on my travels <strong>in</strong> the<br />

footsteps of <strong>Pausanias</strong>. Thanks are also due to the Norwegian Arkadia<br />

Survey team at Tegea, particularly Knut Ødegård and Erik Østby. My<br />

postgraduate work at Oxford was supervised by Simon Hornblower, Ewen<br />

Bowie and Rob<strong>in</strong> Osborne, whose support and rigorous question<strong>in</strong>g allowed<br />

me to explore many new aspects of <strong>Pausanias</strong>’ work. Over the years<br />

many colleagues at Merton College, St John’s College, Somerville College<br />

and at Swansea offered stimulat<strong>in</strong>g discussion, support and helpful criticism<br />

which led to further l<strong>in</strong>es of enquiry; without them my work would<br />

certa<strong>in</strong>ly have been much less fruitful and enjoyable. I would particularly<br />

One of the most pleasant aspects of my work on <strong>Pausanias</strong> has been to<br />
