Change For Food Topples
$10,000 In Donations
The Emmitsburg Business and
Professional Association sponsored a
“Change for Food” Program where
change boxes were placed in various
businesses around Emmitsburg
for convenient change donations
at point of purchase. Recently,
earnings toppled the $10,000 mark
for the program which benefits the
Emmitsburg Food Bank. Read more
Team Penning With A
Halloween Twist
On October 30, the Team Penning Competition Season at Double Rock
Farm in Rocky Ridge came to a close a little differently than other years. Trickor-treating
and costume parades complete with horses in various disguises
made for an interesting scene. The event’s hosts, Rick and Bev Long, started
up the evening with a Pig Roast provided by BBQ to the Rescue. Friends of
Double Rock also brought a variety of foods for everyone to enjoy throughout the
End of the Year awards. Awards were given for team penning and ranch sorting.
Next on the list of events was Trick or Treat at the Trailers. After the
children got their fill of candy, participants were quick to line up in the show
ring for the Costume Parade. Riders dressed up along with their horses to
compete for the best, cutest and funniest costumes. Approximately 20 horses
and riders participated in Double Rock’s first costume parade. Winners were:
Prettiest – Paul and
Susan Harrison as
the Married Couple;
Most Creative -
Connie Adams as
Catwoman and
Batman; Scariest -
Kendra Voland as a
Headless Horseman;
Funniest - Duane
Dickerson and
Duane Dickerson,
Jr. as Team Penning
Patients. After the
contest, the night was
concluded with the
final Team Penning of
the Year.
October 23 was a very memorable day for three Mother Seton School
students: Andrew Bramson, Abigail Hamrick, and Patrick Van Der Cruyssen
(pictured). Having taken first place in the NFL Punt, Pass and Kick at Mother
Seton School and then again at Sectionals for their various categories in
Westminster, MD, the three students traveled down to Baltimore to the Raven’s
stadium to compete at the State level. All three students were able to watch the
Raven’s game in a sky box with their families and all three were recognized on
the field during the game.
Abby Hamrick, a current eighth grader at MSS and daughter of Wes and
Kim Hamrick of Thurmont, came in first in the Girls age 12-13 category.
Abby will now have to wait to see if her scores are high enough to take her to
Nationals. If she has one of the top four scores compared to all of the other
32 NFL team Punt, Pass and Kick winners, then she will go on to Nationals
which will be held at one of the NFL playoff games. She will be notified by
mid-December.
“The best of the day was meeting the Raven’s mascot, Poe, and going on
the field after the 3rd quarter and being three feet away from Derrick Mason,”
said Abby. When asked if she did anything special to prepare for the contest,
she said she “practiced kicking off of the tee to get better. I’m okay with the
punting and passing.”
Patrick Van Der Cruyssen, current eighth grader at MSS and son of John
and Marguerite Van Der Cruyssen of Cascade, came in second place in the
Boys age 12-13 category. Drew Bramson, sixth grader at MSS and son of
Jonathan Bramson and Susan Keane from Blue Ridge Summit, PA, came in
third place in the Boys age 10-11 category.
Initiating the Mother Seton School NFL Punt, Pass & Kick competition
was Physical Education teacher, Danielle Kirby, who was told about the
program by MSS parent, Jonathan Bramson. NFL Punt, Pass & Kick is a
national skills competition for boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 15.
Boys and girls compete separately against their peers. More than three million
youngsters take part in this competition every year. Sarah Szukalski, current
sixth grader at MSS and daughter of Gary and Laurie Szukalski of Frederick,
MD, also competed along with Bramson, Hamrick, and Van Der Cruyssen in
Westminster where she placed second at the sectional level.
from the publisher
Dear Reader:
I put out a plea in last month’s message asking for help managing the words
and work of this paper. I received response from 4 people, some of whom are
actively helping already or will be helping in the months to come. Thank you.
This month, I’d like to ask for a student writer or parent writer to report
activities and news at Catoctin High School. Also, please take note that I’m
looking for a part-time staff person in the “Help Wanted” Section.
in the October town hall meeting. He
spoke of the opportunity to improve
safety, provide education and solve
problems together. He also stated
that their organization would be
able to apply for available funds to
help move forward with their vision.
Commissioner Lookingbill has been
invited to serve as a liaison for the
commissioners. Also, once organized,
public representation would be
welcome as well.
Town Manager Blakeslee says that
the first part of 2011 will reflect the
higher rate, with the last 7 months
reflecting the decrease. By 2012,
the citizens will see the decrease for
the entire year. Mayor Burns says
they have been working on the rate
increase for 4 years and that the
town had been living on a shoestring
two Commissioners voted in favor of
the resolution. Two board members
Ride for the Cure
by Rebecca long Chaney
Waves of pink dotted the beautiful
Catoctin Mountains recently in
Thurmont as 28 riders took up
mount to “Ride for the Cure” for
five hours risking sore behinds and
backs all to raise nearly $3,500 for
the Susan G. Komen Chapter of
Maryland.
Horses’ manes and tails were
tied with pink ribbons, a few steeds’
ankles were wrapped with pink
horse tape, some horses’ heads were
bedazzled with gems, breast cancer
logo charms dangled from each
bridle and a large pink breast cancer
logo was spray painted on the sides
of every horse’s rump.
“I just thought the day was
magical,” said Becky Clarke,
who helped her two daughters,
Taylor (14) and Jessica (18),
organize the event. “It seemed
everybody was so in the spirit
and really were there to “Ride
for the Cure.” All the time that
riders took to decorate their
horse and dress in pink... it was
evident that riders were really
into making it a breast cancer
awareness event.”
According to Clarke,
the entire trail riding event
was the brainchild of her
youngest daughter, Taylor.
“She needed to come up with
a service project to achieve
the sixth and final level of the
4-H Diamond Clover program,” she
explained. “It’s like the equivalent of
reaching the top Eagle level in Boy Scouts.
“The 4-H Diamond Clover
program is a program by levels, each
year you complete a different level
and each year you must complete
more and more activities,” Taylor
said. “That makes you a stronger
4-H’er. Once you complete a level,
you get the stone of which level
you’re on. The first level I received an
amethyst and the last level, this year,
I’ll receive a diamond.”
Taylor is a sophomore at Catoctin
High School, active in the FFA and a
member of the Rocky Ridge 4-H Club.
Jessica who will also earn her Diamond
Clover is a freshman at West Virginia
University (WVU) studying agricultural
extension education.
Clarke, along with her husband,
Tim, own Fox Meadow Farm near
Rocky Ridge where the 12-mile ride
started and finished. Folks registered,
donated funds, signed up for door
prizes donated by a very supportive
community and enjoyed wonderful
fellowship before and after the ride.
“The event started as a small
project, but as interest grew both
girls were involved in planning every
aspect of the event along with my
guidance,” Clarke said. “Taylor
designed the beautiful logo. She is
awesome with computer graphics and
it took her no time at all to come up
with a logo, design and web site.”
Jessica was away at college but
helped with registration and pledge
forms and staffed the tables on
ride day. “She basically handled
all the paperwork and brought five
volunteers home from her leadership
class at WVU to help throughout the
day — they were invaluable!”
The Clarkes said the 4-H
Diamond program was not their only
motive for picking Breast Cancer as
their fund to support. “We know
several relatives and friends that have
Jessica and Taylor standing over their mom at the completion
of the “Ride for the Cure” all donning their “Ride for the
Cure” t-shirts designed by Taylor Clarke.
been affected by breast cancer, so it
just seemed the logical thing to do.
Many people during the ride talked
about friends and family they’ve lost
to breast cancer or who are fighting it
now. It was a very special day.”
A small army of people helped
make the “Ride for the Cure” a
success, according to Clarke, people
and businesses donated food, door
prizes, money and their time to make
sure this was an incredible event.
“The Rocky Ridge 4-H Club
supplied the food for lunch, property
owners kindly allowed us to ride the
boundaries of their pasture fields
and Catoctin Mountain Orchard
owner Bobby Black let us and our
horses rest in his top meadow with
the most amazing view of the valley
below,” she added. “The fall foliage
was beautiful, the riders and horses
content, we raised lots of money for
breast cancer — it was a blessed day!
I am very proud of my daughters.”
Clarke’s long-time friend, Trish
Hahn of Thurmont, who helped
map out the trail ride weeks earlier
summarized the day, “We couldn’t
have asked for a more beautiful day,
or for such a meaningful cause! The
heavens were shining down on us.
The Clarkes organized an amazing
day.”

Colorfest: A Community Event
by Valerie Nusbaum
On October 9 and 10, Catoctin
Colorfest celebrated its 47th year.
The beautiful weather contributed
to very large throngs of shoppers
and eaters. Colorfest is a huge
selling opportunity for crafters and
artisans from all over the country,
but it’s not just the craft vendors
who benefit from this annual event
and the hungry crowds who flock to
Thurmont. There were many local
nonprofit organizations that held
fund-raisers during the two-day event.
The Guardian Hose Company
of Thurmont sold food at the
activities grounds. Pit beef and pit
ham sandwiches were very popular,
and the meat was even sold by the
pound. This area also featured the
best steamers in town, along with
pizza and Italian sausages. Also
in the activities grounds area were
Trinity United Methodist Church
and the Thurmont Lions Club
that were selling apple dumplings
and soup—at least until the apple
dumplings ran out. Visitors love
those apple dumplings. Lines for
the food were long, but not so long
that customers weren’t willing to
wait. The Thurmont Grange sold
ice cream and sodas adjacent to the
activities grounds.
The Thurmont Lions Club
also operated a food trailer at the
Community Park,
offering such delights
as fried Snickers and
fried Twinkies as well
as regular fare, and
the area in front of the
trailer was always full of
customers.
At the entrance to the
Community Park, the
Thurmont Community Ambulance
Company sold their delicious apple
dumplings again this year, both with
and without ice cream. At last count
it was reported that 7,400 were sold.
Inside the Community Park, two
local churches were selling food.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel reported
a great year, selling out of several
items. St. Peter the Apostle Church
from Libertytown has been selling
funnel cakes for several years
now. The Wye River Upper School
also had a food tent, selling hot
dogs and roast beef. Other local
churches throughout the town and
surrounding areas held bake sales,
yard sales and offered food. It’s a
good way to make some money and
be a part of the community.
Various organizations throughout
the town of Thurmont offer parking
for Colorfest. The Thurmont schools
parked cars in their lots, generating
funds to be used for school
activities throughout the
year. Both Deerfield United
Methodist Church and
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
Church collected revenues
from parking, as did the Boy
Scouts. The Boy Scouts also
managed their baggage check
stand, which offered shoppers
the opportunity to drop off those
heavy purchases while shopping
for more. The Thurmont Historical
Society rented spaces to vendors and
held a yard sale.
Not only did the nonprofit
organizations around town make
some money during Colorfest
weekend, but local businesses got
in on the act as well. The motels in
the area hosted out-of-town vendors
and shoppers, and the restaurants all
did a very steady business during the
three days that vendors and visitors
were in town. Some businesses rented
out their parking lots to additional
vendors, and many residents with
properties on Frederick Road and
Main Street did the same thing. Quite
a few homeowners allowed cars to
park on their lawns. Everyone who
could capitalize on the event did so.
According to Colorfest President
Carol Robertson, it was a great year.
“The crowd seemed to be as big as
always, and the vendors reported
good sales. We’re already getting calls
about next year!”
Robertson also commented that
the traffic barrels, which were set up
along Frederick Road, were a very
good thing. “The town of Thurmont
really supports our organization,
and we appreciate all the work they
do. We’re glad to be able to give
Thurmont “Makes a Difference” Every Day
by Theresa Dardanell
It would be impossible to
personally thank all of the people
who contributed to “Make a
Difference Day” this year. It was
truly a community event that
actually started several months ago
with a fund-raising campaign. If
you bought mums or cancer support
signs, you made a difference. If you
were one of the sponsors of the event
or volunteered to help, you made a
difference. If you participated in the
actual ceremony on October 23, you
made a difference.
The day started with an
admiration walk to symbolize the
steps taken by those affected by
cancer. Led by event coordinators
Shirley Long and Susan Favorite,
participants walked from Our Lady
of Mount Carmel Parish Center to
the Town Square Park. In a touching
ceremony, ornaments were hung
on a “remembrance tree” in honor
of cancer victims, those currently
fighting the disease, cancer survivors,
families of those affected, health
care professionals, caregivers and
researchers.
After the return of the walkers,
the reception started with a welcome
by Thurmont Lions Club President
Margarito Ochoa. Dianne
McLean introduced
special guests Rosemary
McDermott, Bill Blakesley
and Mayor Martin
Burns. John Brown gave
a brief history of Make A
Difference Day.
Because so many
people in Thurmont make
a difference in the lives
of others every day, part
of this event included
awards for outstanding
community service. Lieutenant Paul
Allen Droneburg was named the
2010 Police Officer of the Year, and
Lynn Stuart was named the 2010
Volunteer of the Year.
The focus of the 2010 Thurmont
Make A Difference Day was cancer
and the many people who are
affected by this disease. The guest
speaker at the reception was Dr. Julie
Eiseman, a local resident who is also
a cancer researcher. Dr. Eiseman
presented a slide show including a
virtual tour of her cancer lab. She spoke
about the drug development cycle and
the compounds currently under study in
her lab. She gave us hope for the future
of anti-cancer treatments.
The most exciting part of the
event was the presentation of the
funds. As a result of the generosity
of the community—a donation
from R.R. Donnelley, sponsorship
by Bogley Chevrolet and Thrivent
Financial for Lutherans, and
coordination by The Thurmont Lions
Club—$10,063 was raised. Checks
were presented to the Catoctin
Community Medical Fund to assist
with the cancer-related needs of local
cancer patients and to Dr. Eiseman’s
laboratory to further her research.
Pictured above, six outstanding community members were nominated for the 2010 Thurmont
Volunteer of the year award. From left are Fred Mullins (nominee), Janet Marsh (nominee), George
Bolling (nominee), Nancy Dutterer (nominee), Lynn Stuart (2010 Volunteer of the year), Margarito
ochoa (Thurmont Lions Club President), Ghislaine “Gene” Doyon (nominee), Martin Burns (Mayor
of Thurmont). All of the nominees give generously of their time and talent. Fred Mullins and Gene
Doyon work tirelessly to help the Thurmont Food Bank; Janet Marsh has accumulated over 25,000
hours of volunteer service at Lewistown Elementary School; George Bolling founded the LEo Clubs
in Thurmont Middle and Catoctin High schools; Nancy Dutterer is a lifelong volunteer who has
helped raise thousands of dollars for various organizations and community members in need. Lynn
Stuart was chosen as the recipient of the award for her work with numerous projects in Thurmont.
Lynn founded the Thurmont Garden Club and established the Thurmont A.R.T. Festival. She is an
active member of the Thurmont Lions Club and an advisor to the Thurmont Middle School LEo
Club. She can be found at fund-raisers all over town, but her generosity is not limited to service
organizations. When she sees a need, she finds a way to fill it; for example, sending a note of
encouragement or a meal to someone in need. She makes a difference every day. As part of the
award, Lynn will be given the opportunity to chose a charity to receive a $400 donation in her
name.
Burns, Mayor of Thurmont; Margarito ochoa, Thurmont Lions Club President; Lieutenant Paul
Allen Droneburg, 2010 Police Officer of the Year; Gregory Eyler, Police Chief of Thurmont.
Officer Droneburg was chosen for his professionalism, dedication to security and protection, and
community service. His work goes above and beyond the requirements of his job. Thurmont is
fortunate to have him in our community. As part of the award, Officer Droneburg will be given the
opportunity to choose the charity that will receive a $400 donation in his name.
the health jeanne
Do you worry a lot? You may know someone who does! Worrying can
affect your health if it becomes chronic. Health articles indicate it can lead
to a host of health problems like headaches, insomnia, and stomach issues, to
name just a few. So how do we control it?
Some may say it’s about control. That it’s useless to worry about things you
cannot control. This gives it a different perspective.
There are books you can read to get advice. “How To Stop Worrying
and Start Living,” by Dale Carnegie, has been a best-seller for decades and
supposedly is helping many kick the worry habit. Yours truly began learning
that it was better to use energy for resolving a situation than wasting the
energy on worrying. In addition, I found listening to self-help tapes are
helpful. You’ll find these in most book stores.
Networking can be another avenue to explore. Having a buddy or best
friend at work with whom you share similar goals can be resourceful.
Breaking the worry habit takes time. Reminding yourself to focus on the
present will encourage you to pay attention. You just may notice something of
pleasure. And, your worries might just fade!
Ernest Hemingway says it well: “Worry a little bit every day and in a life
time you will lose a couple of years. If something is wrong, fix it if you can. But
train yourself not to worry. Worry never fixes anything.”
Youth Group Rocks for local boy
Members of the Garfield United Methodist Church Youth group in Foxville,
known as the King’s Kids, held their annual Rock-A-Thon fundraiser on the
evening and morning of September tenth and eleventh.
Each year the group chooses to sponsor an organization, mission, or child
from the area. This year the King’s Kids decided to raise money for Trevor
Coblentz. Trevor Coblentz was a healthy toddler, but a tick bite changed his life.
Trevor is a 4-year-old from Cascade, Md. He developed Rocky Mountain
spotted fever, then spinal meningitis and spent several months as a patient at
Hershey (Pa.) Medical Center. He is the son of Terry and Michelle Coblentz.
As a result of the infections, Trevor is fighting a brain injury. The King’s
Kids Youth group from Garfield United Methodist Church on Stottlemyer
road, near Thurmont, wanted to help Trevor and his family by offsetting
medical expenses through the annual fundraiser. Each youth member
was responsible for collecting pledges and donations from friends, family,
neighbors, and church members.
The youth then met on the evening of September tenth to rock, in rocking
chairs, a maximum of twelve hours. Each hour they rocked earned them more
money from their hourly pledges. The goal this year was to raise 1,000 dollars,
thanks to all the strong support, Garfield United Methodist King’s Kids raised a
grand total of 2,000 dollars, doubling their initial goal!
The Trevor Coblentz Care Fund is also established at Susquehanna Bank,
Community Day at Wantz Chevrolet
October 16 was a day of support by the folks at Wantz Chevrolet in
Taneytown. Yard sales and vendors covered their parking lot for their biannual
Community Day event where community members could take part in
the event or shop for goodies while there. The event has doubled in size over
the three years they’ve been hosting it.
During the Community Day, Wantz held a “Hope for the Cure” benefit
where individuals can show their support for a breast cancer cure by signing a
pink car hood. Proceeds help the R.U.M. Relay for Life Team out of Hanover
contribute to the cure.
Wantz held a coloring contest for kids during the month of October. The
artwork is being displayed in the showroom at 1 Chevro Drive in Taneytown.
Through December 31, you can stop by, register on-line or call to enter
your name in a drawing that could earn you a chance to Roll the Dice for a
new CAMARO. On January 15, 2011, contestants will roll special C A M A
R O dice in hopes that they roll the letters that spell Camaro to win the car.
Hillside Turkey Farms to Reopen
by Valerie Nusbaum
The Hillside Turkey Farms store will be open in time for Thanksgiving.
That’s good news for us and bad news for the turkeys! According to Judi
Smith, the plan is for the store to reopen during the second week of November.
An electrical fire in the smokehouse room caused a tremendous amount of
damage to most of the building, which houses the store and workrooms. Only
two rooms were untouched during the fire, with much of the damage being due
to heavy smoke. There was even smoke damage behind the paneling that was
pulled off the walls when the building was being gutted. Everything had to be
replaced except the stainless steel items and those items that could be cleaned
or scrubbed free of residue.
Smith reported that the store will probably need to rent refrigerated trucks
to help handle the holiday volume since only one large walk-in cooler will be
ready in time for the reopening. The repair work will be ongoing for several
more weeks, but the store, the rooms directly behind it and the large cooler are
all expected to be finished shortly.
Customers have been calling to find out whether the store will be open in
time to purchase fresh turkeys for the holidays. Smith is urging customers to,
“Come in and see the finished store during the week of November 8.” The
store is located at 30 Elm Street in Thurmont. Customers may call 301-271-
2728 to place orders.
Smith stated that the family really wants to thank the community for the
overwhelming support received during this difficult time. Friends, neighbors
and customers all pitched in to help in many ways, whether it was scrubbing
and cleaning, or offering to loan things.
“We are very, very grateful for all the help we received, and we want to
thank each and every one of you,” said Smith.
Thurmont Captures Title
Thurmont’s 13-15 year old Babe Ruth Fall Ball team capped off a strong
season by capturing the league championship, beating Myersville 13-3 in the
championship game at Loats Field on October 25.
Thurmont finished the regular season 9-3 and then used strong pitching
performances and timely hitting in the post-season tournament to win the title
with four straight wins. Alex Kennedy pitched a one-hitter and homered to lead
Thurmont past Myersville 11-1 in the opening game. Andrew Weaver pitched
four strong innings in beating Brunswick 9-5 in the second round.
Thurmont defeated Smithsburg 11-9 in the semi-finals in a wild, back and
forth game where the lead changed hands three times. Smithsburg rallied from
five runs down to take the lead mid-way through the game but Thurmont used
strong hitting to retake the lead. Extra base hits by Mark Smith, Seth Shubert,
and Austin Boggs fueled the comeback and Andrew Weaver added a homerun.
In the Championship game, Seth Shubert pitched four strong innings and
Thurmont jumped on the Myersville starting pitcher for seven runs in the first
inning and cruised to the 13-3 win.
“Lefty” Wilders Inducted Into Alvin G.
Quinn Sports Hall of Fame
Photo and Story by Carie Stafford
As a small town boy, Frank
“Lefty” Wilders dreamed of playing
sports. He was an all-around athlete
serving as captain of the soccer team,
playing basketball and his favorite
sport, baseball. A small town boy
that enjoyed the game never dreamed
that one day he would be inducted
into the Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall
of Fame in Frederick County.
Frank always did what he loved
to do—play ball. He was one of a
few left-handed pitchers in Thurmont
High School and thus earned the
nickname “Lefty.” Graduating in
1947 from Thurmont High School,
Frank was drafted to the Brooklyn
Dodgers and spent the next years
perfecting his left-handed curve ball,
averaging 10 strike outs per game
with an ERA of 3.2 and a batting
average over .300.
In between his time with the
Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York
Yankees, Frank was recuperating
from injuries due to the baseball
back home in Thurmont. He once
again made his mark on his home
front by pitching the Washington
County League to victory in 1949.
In 1950, Frank’s contract was
bought out by the New York
Yankees where he played until 1954.
When the Korean War started,
Frank made an honorable decision
to serve his country and enlisted in
the U.S. Air Force. While playing ball
with some fellow soldiers, his talent
was noticed and he was asked to
play on the Air Force Baseball Team.
Seizing the opportunity to do what
he loved to do best, he accepted.
With that acceptance came the
chance to travel all over Europe and
the Mediterranean, with Casablanca,
Frankfurt and Berlin, Germany,
being his most memorable visits.
After coming home from the Air
Force, Frank continued to stay active
in his favorite sport by coaching
the Thurmont American Legion
team and the Thurmont League,
playing for Thurmont and winning
the pennant in the Maryland State
League in 1956. With his many wins
and losses along the way, Frank
“Lefty” Wilders always did what he
loved best—play ball. His love of
the game and his experience helped
him to instill the love of the game
in many young players through the
years.
In January 2010, Frank was
inducted into Frederick County’s
Alvin G. Quinn Sports Hall of
Fame. With the shortest speech,
but with it all said, “I played minor
league baseball for the Dodgers
and Yankees and won honors along
the way. This tonight is the highest
honor I’ve ever received. This is
about as good as it gets. A very
special thanks to Bob Reid and Jack
Davis for all their special efforts.”
Frank still lives in his home town
of Thurmont with his wife, Drusilla
Wilders. He is enjoying retirement
from RR Donnelly, but most of all
you can find him on game days in
front of the television cheering his
team on. Thank you “Lefty” for
your love of the game and your
inspiration that has fueled many of
the young talent in our small town.
Lefty would like to say thank you to
Jack Davis and Bob Reid for their
support.
Seton Center Seeks ‘Holiday Sponsors’
When people are hungry, alone or out-of-work, the holiday season can be
daunting. For more than 25 years, the people of Emmitsburg, Thurmont and
surrounding areas have given generously through the Seton Center to make the
Thanksgiving and Christmas season a little brighter for those in need. After
the blizzards last winter, it’s not surprising that so many families are asking for
snow boots and winter coats for their children.
When a person or group sponsors a family for Thanksgiving, we request
Who
Am I?
by Angela Schaffert
Your clues from the last issue
were: “Always in a band; a regular
Legion musician; a counselor for
kids; traveled over the mountain and
through the woods to get to work; a
coach of track and cross country in the
city; a rice named snake; xoxo ymmij.”
Those who guessed correctly are:
Nancy Kreitz, Bonnie Albaugh, Mary
Jo Willard.
I am Charles Rice.
Charles Rice grew up in Jefferson,
Maryland and was given the
nickname “Snake” as a young child
for unknown reasons. He attended
Frederick High School where he
played football, basketball and
baseball and played in the band. He
met his wife, Donna (Rinehart) from
Leitersburg, Maryland while they
were both in college at Towson State
Teachers College. Rice plays tenor
sax and keyboard. He worked his
way through college playing music
in clubs in Baltimore and Frederick.
He’s played in many bands over the
years and likes to play “anything you
can dance to.”
Some of you may recall when he
played at the Thurmont Legion with
Kirk and Friends in the 70’s and
80’s. Rice’s most recent band was
with Bill Krantz Band. With them,
he sometimes played at Pen Mar Park
and other local venues.
Rice is now playing solo by
volunteering at churches, nursing
homes, and sometimes class reunions.
Rice.
Rice served in the United States
He was stationed in New Port,
Rhode Island. He also worked at
Fairchild in Hagerstown where
he performed engineering tests on
airplanes and guided missiles to
make sure they were air certified.
He says he once received a raise at
8:00 a.m. then got laid off at 9:00
a.m. the same day because the job
depended on getting a contract that
fell through.
He taught math and science at
Frederick High School during most
of the 1960’s. He also coached track
and cross country there.
Rice lives in Hagerstown and
he was a counselor from ‘71 to
officers. The group is known as the LEO Club and is made up of high school
and middle school students. Under the guidance of the school advisors and
members of the Thurmont Lions Club, these young LEOs are receiving actual,
hands-on experience in how to lead and participate in community activities.
Before we know it, the members of these LEO Clubs will be our leaders and
decision-makers, having learned the importance of service to their community
as today’s LEOs.
With the help of their advisor, Candace Desonier, the Thurmont Middle
School LEOs held an open meeting to vote for their officers. The officers for
the 2010 - 2011 school year are Bubba Williams, President; Rachel Cassidy,
Vice-President; Kiley Warner, Secretary; Garrett Buckley, Treasurer; Katelyn
Simmel, Public Relations; Ashley Ritchie and Brett Wood, Directors. The
Thurmont Middle School officers intend to guide their club towards greatness
through service. As members of the LEO Club, each member shall have
opportunities in learning how to organize successful fundraising projects, how
to create ways to support the community of Thurmont, and most importantly,
how to have good, old-fashioned fun. After an exciting time at Camp Merrick
Leadership Camp during the weekend of October 22nd, the LEOs assisted the
Thurmont Lions Club at the Fall Food Fest on October 30. They will also be
participating in a fund-raiser selling Bon-Ton coupons. Their enthusiasm and
desire to serve brings pride to all of the involved adults.
The Catoctin High School LEOs
see many needs in the community.
Because of the poor economy, the
high school LEOs have a special
concern for the hungry. One of their
major projects for the 2010-2011
school year is to feed the hungry,
keeping. As the years passed my file
has grown considerably. On a recent
afternoon, with nothing special to
do, I pulled out one of my folders
titled “Items To Save,” and came
across an item which I would like to
share with the readers of this column.
I have no idea where it came from
or why it ended up in my file. I must
have saved it for a reason.
The contents of the item tell
a story which I think is most
important, and worth repeating, no
matter how old it gets or how often
it appears in print. It is in the form
of a letter written by a lad in the
Infantry of the United States Army
to his parents. It goes something like
this.....
“If I should die during my tour in
Vietnam, I want my parents to read
and to understand the following:
1. I came here by choice. I joined
the Army by choice. I chose to
become an Infantry officer. It was
my destiny to become a professional
soldier. Fighting for my country,
right or wrong, is a job that must be
done. It is a job that I feel I am best
at.
2. The American people too
often forget what the Flag stands
for. I am a Patriot, and I believe
in our country, and I believe in our
system of government. I feel that
my country is worth fighting for and
if need be, worth dying for. The
country we have today was not built
by the weak, and the disbelievers. It
was built with the blood of men who
felt they had something worth dying
for. I think it is the duty, the right
and the privilege of every American
to fight for this country. It has to
be this way, and thank God there
are still men left in our country who
believe. The people in the streets
who protest our country and its
policies have that right to protest
only because men believe enough
in the system to give their lives for
it. There are still men with dreams
and ideals that they feel are really
worth fighting for. This is what I also
believe in.
If I should die, for a reason, my
life bought something, it was not
wasted. I believe this, otherwise I
would not be here.
I am a believer, a dreamer,
a patriot, and most of all, a
professional soldier in the United
States Army, from the bottom of my
Your loving son Bruce
-----------------------------------
As I read the newspapers and
watch the news on TV, see the
thousands of starving people in the
world and hear of the problems and
the fighting in other parts of the
world, I can’t help but think how
great it is to be and American and
live where I do. We enjoy so many
freedoms, and yet we seem to take
them for granted.
The ideal of freedom has traveled
a long and hard road through human
history. Yet the record shows that in
the face of adversity and force and
terror, that the passion for equal
rights for all is the ultimate weapon
in the struggle for independence and
human dignity.
How lucky we are, as Americans.
We live in a free and open society.
That is where our strength and
greatness lies. We do not hide our
faults behind a wall. We do not try
to bury our mistakes. We do not
conceal incidents, even though they
may be shameful.
In the final analysis, every issue
comes at last to a set of intellectual
and moral decisions within the
mind and heart of each one of us as
individuals. Like the Infantry Officer
Bruce, our experiences each day
reinforce our convictions that our
democracy will stand or fall on the
capacity of each individual American
citizen to meet his responsibilities.
THANK GOD, I AM AN
AMERICAN.
They call it Thanksgiving for a
reason. We acknowledge thanks for
our Maker, food, families, friends,
jobs, clothing and shelter.
This Thanksgiving extend your
gratitude to include the innate
functions of a healthy body.
As you sit around the table
enjoying the holiday foods, give
thanks for vision to see the fruits
of your labor. Give thanks that
you can smell the pumpkin pie
baking. Appreciate the sense of taste
for Grandma’s homemade rolls.
Express gratitude that you can hear
the blessing and the chatter of the
children. Acknowledge how it feels
to touch those you love. All of these
senses come to us without us having
to think about them. They just
happen and most of us take these
gifts for granted.
We don’t think about how to
chew or swallow, digest or assimilate
our meal. You can’t consciously
direct the vegetables, proteins, sugars
and enzymes where to go for the
greater good of your body. It just
happens! We don’t have to think
about making our heart beat or our
lungs expand.
When was the last time you asked
body wisdom
your body to produce blood and then
make it flow?
Have you asked for the creation of
new cells today? Have you requested
proper kidney function? We don’t
tell our liver, stomach, gall bladder,
intestines or skin how or when to do
their job. Breathing, blinking and the
synchronized action of our muscles
and bones, can be controlled but
primarily it happens without our
conscious command. Even holding
this newspaper in your hands is an
automatic response to a subconscious
thought of this amazing body you
live in.
Pause for a few minutes every day,
not just Thanksgiving, to express
thanks for the wisdom of your body.
tickling our taste buds
by Denise Valentine,
A monthly column by a community member who loves to cook!
Hello everyone…..with Thanksgiving and Christmas fast approaching, we
will be faced with “leftover syndrome” again very soon. Most families have
a large turkey, a ham or maybe a pork roast. In most cases the theory is to go
bigger to make sure there is plenty for everyone.
For days, weeks if you freeze some, we will be eating those leftovers in one
form or another. After having that huge holiday meal, most folks are satisfied
with a lighter fare of sandwiches and soup for a couple of days.
Since Maryland is famous for our crabs, I thought I would share a few of
our family’s favorite varieties of crab soup.
The vegetable-based version, Maryland Crab Soup is quick and easy and
I’ve been making it this way for years. My daughter, Amanda found this
Cream of Crab Soup Recipe in a Dairy Princess Pamphlet featuring dairy
products. This has become one of her specialties. I hope you enjoy!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!
Cream of Crab Soup
¾ cup butter 1 qt. of milk
1 cup flour 1 qt. half and half
3 cubes chicken bouillon, crushed 1 lb. back fin crabmeat
White pepper to taste Old Bay Seasoning to taste
Melt butter, blend in flour and pepper. Stirring, simmer for one minute. Add
milk, half and half and bouillon. Simmer, stirring constantly until thick. Add
crabmeat and Old Bay and heat through.
Quick Crab Soup
6 lb. of frozen mixed vegetables 3 15 oz. cans diced potatoes
(peas, carrots, corn, etc.) 2 lb. of claw crabmeat
3 28 oz. cans of crushed tomatoes Old Bay Seasoning
64 oz. container of tomato juice 8 Beef Bouillon Cubes
In 12 qt. stockpot dissolve 8 beef bouillon cubes in 8 cups of hot water.
Add crushed tomatoes (and juice), half of the tomato juice, the frozen
vegetables, crabmeat and 3-4 tablespoons of Old Bay. Heat on medium-high
heat until the vegetables are thawed. Drain the potatoes and add to the
mixture. Add water to the remaining half of the tomato juice and add to
mixture. Add Old Bay to desired flavor is achieved. Simmer for at least 2 hours
for flavor to incorporate into vegetables. Makes approx. 2 gallon.
they are paying tribute to the “Man in Black”. They try to keep everything the
boy Scout Troop 270 Travel South
In August, Boy Scout Troop
270 traveled to North and South
Carolina to learn more about the
impact of the South during the Civil
War. Starting in Wilmington, N.C.,
the Scouts visited Wrightsville Beach
and toured the USS North Carolina,
a World War II battleship. The
Scouts camped out in sweltering 98
degree weather.
Then the Scouts traveled further
south to South Carolina where they
stayed aboard the USS Yorktown, an
aircraft carrier anchored in Patriots
Point. Having full rein from bow
to stern, the boys were amazed at the vastness of the ship. The Scouts took
classes on naval and aviation history and then took turns in a flight simulator,
where they tried their best to fly a virtual airplane. In the evening the Scouts
slept in the berthing area of the aircraft carrier where the sailors once slept.
Boy Scout Troop 270 was honored and privileged to raise the Confederate
Flag at Ft. Sumter National Monument. After raising the flag the boys toured
the monument where they were awed in the wonder of its history. Ft. Sumter
is where the opening shots of the Civil War began on April 12, 1861.
Boy Scout Troop 270 learned that the impact of the Civil War was not just
in Gettysburg, PA. It stretched to places they have just begun to explore.
happily ever after
Grin and bare It
by Valerie Nusbaum
At my last dental checkup, my
dentist told me that I need braces.
I was shocked to hear it. I’ve been
a patient of this particular dentist
for years and years, and he’s never
mentioned that my bite is off. He
should have told me about it 20 years
ago when it might have mattered—
back when my lady parts were still
perky and I had less facial hair than
my husband. I just can’t see myself
wearing braces as I try to brush my
teeth with my arthritic hands. It
seems wrong somehow.
The dentist said that my bite is off
because my teeth have shifted. The
shifting was caused by me clenching
my jaw. I did notice that I was doing
some serious clenching as he was
suggesting the names of orthodontists
I should call—my jaw, my fists,
and a cheek or two. I do clench my
jaw a lot. The dentist is right about
that. It keeps me from saying things I
shouldn’t say and has probably saved
a life or two. I’m making a concerted
effort to stop clenching, but it’s hard
because life can be so darned irritating.
Dr. Sadist also made me go out
and get a rechargeable toothbrush
since I apparently don’t brush my
teeth properly. I find this especially
odd because I’ve had exactly two
cavities in my entire life. I thoroughly
dislike brushing with the new
toothbrush. You may find this hard
to believe, but it’s too big for my
mouth. Even when I load it with
toothpaste, I still can’t work up a
good lather, and I like to look like I
have rabies when I brush my teeth.
The worst part is that every time I
use the clumsy thing, I get drool all
the way up my sleeve. My mouth
doesn’t feel clean either, so I end
up brushing again with a regular
toothbrush. I’m sure this destroys all
the good I’m doing with the electric
menace. Dr. S. says that I brush
entirely too hard with my regular
brush and that I’ve been causing my
gums to recede. Blah, blah, blah.
Randy’s dentist made him get
a rechargeable toothbrush too, as
well as a WaterPic. Hubby doesn’t
like them either, but he’s solved the
problem by putting them under the
sink in his bathroom. Randy sees a
different dentist than I do, so they
must all be in cahoots with Oral-B.
I’m crushed to know that my teeth
aren’t straight. I’ve always thought
they were. That’s the only thing I had
going for me. I’m blind as a bat, my
hearing isn’t great, and I can count
the number of “good hair” days I’ve
had lately on one hand.
I’m trying to be a Big Girl about
it. When I get dressed in the morning,
I pull on my mom jeans over top of
my granny panties and I face the day
as usual. The only problem is that my
pants don’t fit.
Am I the only one who’s having
this problem? I go to the store and
buy a pair of jeans or slacks in my
regular size. I get them home and try
them on and the waist seems to be six
inches too wide. The manufacturers
are calling it the “Modern Fit” or
advising us that the pants will sit just
below the natural waist. What the
heck does that mean? I want a pair
of pants that I don’t have to yank up
every time I stand up or get in and
out of the car. I don’t like to wear
belts, but I have to resort to that
almost all the time now. I’ve tried
buying a smaller size or even going
down two sizes. It’s ridiculous. If the
clothing designers want to trick us
into thinking we’ve lost weight, there
are better ways to do it. Now, I’m
not only worrying that my bite is off.
I’m afraid that my hips are off, too.
The whole magical pants thing is
apparently happening in the men’s
department as well. Randy says that
his waist is getting smaller. He’s just too
happy about it for me to burst his bubble.
I’ve learned recently that I’m
approximately the same age as
Barbie, Mickey Mouse and Fred
Flintstone. Barbie has held up much
better than I have, but then she’s
mostly plastic just like a lot of other
celebrities. Did anybody really
believe that Lisa Rinna’s puffy lips
were natural? For years she swore
that she was born that way, but the
other day I heard that she’d had
surgery to remove the silicone she’d
had put in her lips 20 years ago.
I’d consider plastic surgery or
Botox or something else, but the truth
is I would need a full-body cast. And
if my body were perfect, then my
crooked bite would really stand out.
Children and Teens at the Thurmont Regional library
by Janet Vogel
Children’s Services Supervisor, Thurmont Regional library
It’s almost Thanksgiving, and
here at the library, we are thankful
for wonderful volunteers who
help us with programs. One of our
favorites is Wags for Hope, which
allows children to read aloud to
registered therapy dogs at the library.
Volunteer trainers bring their dogs
to the library, and children enjoy
reading aloud and improving their
reading skills. All ages and reading
levels are welcome, and parents may
even come and read aloud to their
child and the dog. Our next Wags
for Hope program will occur this
Saturday, November 6, at 10:30 a.m.
Don’t forget to register!
After Thanksgiving, when the
shopping is finished, and you are
looking for things to do, stop
by the library. We will open the
on November 26 from 10:00-11:30
a.m. with plenty of toys, games, and
imagination starters for children
birth-age 5. Not in that age group
or coming later? The library has
computers, games, and toys for
children of all ages. Don’t forget to
check out a DVD, magazine or your
favorite book to complete your visit!
I want to start by saying thank you to Well-Fit Aerobic
and Fitness center and the sta for helping me nd the real
woman in me. It has been three years since I started at Well-
Fit. I still remember that rst day. I thought I was going to
pass out. It has been a hard road but so worth the outcome.
In 24 months I have lost: 44.5 lbs., 37.5 inches and 12.8%
body fat.
I never knew I would enjoy going to the gym. I have
so much more energy and my quality of life has been
enhanced greatly. I know that without the love and support
of my family and friends, I may not have made it to this
point.
I started going to Well-Fit a er I saw what a di erence it
made in my brother-in-law (Ed Schildt). Now I know how
hard he worked. I have a lot more good days than bad and I
push myself on those bad days because I will not let myself
go back to that fat miserable person. I don’t diet, but I do
watch how much I eat. I am almost at my goal of 50 lbs. I
will not stop until I get there, hopefully by January.
I am very grateful to my husband who not only supports
me but comes to the gym and works out with me. To those
of you who think you can’t do it, YOU CAN! Come and
join me at Well-Fit. You will be welcomed, supported and
trained to accomplish the goals you set for yourself.
One of the most
anticipated yearly
events at Mother Seton
School is Grandparent’s
Day. This year over
200 grandparents,
great grandparents,
and elders participated
in Grandparent’s
Day at Mother Seton
School, Emmitsburg, on
September 17.
Grandparents and
elders were greeted to
a welcoming reception
with refreshments
and fellowship before
taking their seats in the
full gymnasium. MSS
Students then presented
a wonderful program of
songs, cheers, and puppetry all with the one theme: appreciation and gratitude
for their grandparents and elders!
All grandparents and friends had the opportunity to spend time with their
grandchildren in their classroom where special gifts and class activities were
prepared. First and second grade students enjoyed a special treat of ‘Grapes
and Grahams’ with their grandparents and grades 7 & 8 played a trivia game
with their grandparents comparing school days of old to today’s school days.
Mrs. Gwen Topper graduated from Mother Seton School in 1958, has two
daughters that graduated from MSS, and a granddaughter currently attending
MSS. “Spending the time with my granddaughter in her classroom was the
best part of the day. We played word puzzles and she showed me some of the
work that she recently did. I really enjoyed myself,” said Mrs. Topper.
Thurmont Food bank Joins AmpleHarvest
The Thurmont Food Bank is pleased to announce that it has joined the
AmpleHarvest.org Campaign - a nationwide effort to enable neighborhood
food pantries to be easily located by local backyard gardeners and farmer
wishing to share their excess garden bounty with neighbors in need.
With one out of six American families now relying on pantries to help
feed them, the pantries often have a hard time meeting the demand. This is
especially true at the Thurmont Food Bank where 800 people per month
receive food. The Food Bank is sponsored by the Thurmont Ministerium
and is run completely by volunteers. It relies on donations from individuals,
organizations and churches to feed the hungry in Thurmont, Lewistown,
Graceham, Rocky Ridge, Sabillasville and surrounding areas. This summer the
Thurmont Food Bank and food banks across the nation have struggled to keep
up with the demand.
At the same time, farmers and backyard gardeners have found that their
vegetable and fruit gardens have provided far more produce than they can
possibly use or share with friends. The remainder is often either left to rot
in the garden or put into the trash. Gardeners who want to share part of
their harvest are often unable to find local pantries because they typically do
not have a yellow page listing or an Internet presence. To address this, the
AmpleHarvest.org web site enables food pantries to register their name, phone
and address, to make it easier to find, and days and times they can accept the
produce. Now that The Thurmont Food Bank is a part of the AmpleHarvest.
org Campaign, area backyard gardeners have another means of finding the
pantry and can use the personalized driving instructions available on the site.
The Thurmont Food Bank welcomes fresh produce donations for its
clients. It is located at St. John’s Lutheran Church, next to the fire station, in
Thurmont. Donations should be made between the hours of 5:00-7:30 p.m.
on Tuesday and 2:30-5:00 p.m. on Friday. Please do not drop produce off at
other times as it may go bad if it is not properly stored. For more information
contact Pastor Sally Joyner Griffin at 301- 271-4554.
