quita, usando Creative Commons.
Heiki Lava No Arde.
Why Piedemonte arose?
Interview to Santiago López Triana
(Editorial Piedemonte Director)
By Jose Girón
PIEDEMO
The editorial arose on June 2016
with a clear purpose: Publishing the
works of emerging writers whose
presence is not common in the
most of editorial markets, that’s
to say: people who publish their
works for the first time. In this
way is added the purpose of diffuse
and discuss different topics essays.
We see the performance of several
books as a possibility to spread
creative process of various artists,
therefore we consider the editorial
as a platform to achieve this goal.
Self-management defined as the
most effective way to attain autonomy
regard decision making, that’s
why is chosen the manual production
which claims an office without
appeal to the production of luxury
articles. We recognize the books as
cultural products which are part of
a larger process beyond exploiting
royalties, hence we promote free
diffusion and performance of them.
Which are the topics of
your editions?
We have published eight books
until now, two of them are political
essays “Temporary Autonomous
Zone (TAZ)” by Hakim Bey and
“Ecology and Revolutionary Thought”
by Murray Bookchin); three
are poetry books written by two
young Colombian girls “Fruto de
saudade” by Mónica María, “La
fiebre umbela de unos pocos días”, by Sebastián Lema,
“El día entero” de Santiago López Triana and the
other three are in the middle of poetry and essay for
example the quotes and proverbs book by Omar Ardila,
letter and journal as Fibra Nerviosa de Nicolás Baresch
and the travels book by Marika Heiki Lava No Arde.
What ideology or literary style do you
promote?
It’s very difficult to define a concrete literary style, we
don’t do it. We neither understand anarchism as an
immutable or established ideology, the aim of the edi-
NTE EDITORIAL
What is your opinion about current
editorials?
torial is laying the cards on the table approaching
to the reality from the most appropriate
place. It’s more about discussion instead advertising.
What is the feedback you expect
from your readers?
We expect to generate a collaborative dialogue
through reading and subsequently similar
processes, at last we want help to generate
conscience about the possibilities of self-management.
It’s a very ambiguous question because in
this moment there are a lot of editorials
which have different practices and styles.
Before define the raison d’etre of Piedemonte,
we mentioned why is so important
operate under different perspectives from
the Colombian editorial market because
we have to know the economic utility is
creator and deformer at the same time of
the majority of books which are published.
This situation can be appreciated on the
supermarket shelves in authors as Walter
Riso, color books, promises of miracles,
other which promise success and eternal
youth, love, money; even books about
vampires; and it is the market itself which
creates that kind of tastes; however, is hard
for the divergent expressions and authors
be part of these processes. We also have
top notch editorials which publish outstanding
books but these books are too
expensive and restricted access. There are
independent editorials with different practices.
Several questions arise when we talk
about the meaning of independent. Colombian
editorials work has been rewarding
because allowed the introduction of
new characters and contexts aside from
monopolies, nevertheless here we have a
threat: Becoming on elites. Independent
editorials dynamics should let to the transformation
of author rights.
REVISTA LA CHUECA 19
What do you think is the future of editorials in Colombia?
It’s curious the large quantity of people who are working on editorials, despite that surveys
and researches qualify reading in Colombia as a wasteland. The future of editorials is up to
the audience, so it’s necessary ask ourselves: How can we get the attention to our own processes?
Fairs, events and other situations are only stages and tools to show our works in this
moment in order to keep working and opening new spaces for reflection, discuss and collaborative
dialogue.
Tomorrow I am going look
for him
He used to give nails to the transients, they looked him astonished like if he was an angel.
Years ago sadness had bitten him on the left arm (his ghosts and memories) but he never
gave up, actually it was the big problem, that amazing and gloomy ability to resurrect and
don’t die completely –despite of my constant attempts-
Once I tried to explain him the difference between fidelity and loyalty. He only got the difference
when the softness of my hands became in wickedness touching his neck with a sharpen
dagger.
Today night weather is nice, sweet sweat of the women next to me remembers him. In this
time, I am going to sharp the axe today and tomorrow I am going to look for him.
Where was covered the reportage?
It is divided in two parts: First, was rolled in Yari plains, Caquetá close to guerrilla
campsites where was the last conference of FARC. This first experience was before
peace agreements signature. Second experience was a few months later in a lofty
zone called La Tigra near to Meta after peace agreements signature in reintegration
zones after quite large trips where I had the opportunity to meet the other
face of Colombia.
EXPERIENCIAS EN FOCO
What threats face a photographer in those places?
Despite that I arrived there on bilateral ceasefire time almost the peace agreements were signed,
those places were war zones shocking and complicated, zones which had been living war
and violence horrors in the country, so the people is mistrustful with strangers. There was a
risk whether ceasefire would end up on a shootout or bombardment, in the other hand jungle
is full of dangers as tropical diseases; spiders, scorpions or snakes’ stings, difficult conditions
such as adverse climate conditions which can fall you ill.
What was your criteria about the place before arrive there?
I knew those were war zones, places which had been isolated by violence (very
common in various zones of Colombia) throughout years, places with a lot of economic
difficulties and forsaken by Government, the country which we don’t know
in cities, a country of sad faces which break your heart claiming for help.
EXPERIENCIAS EN FOCO
What story or stories from the people from there surprised you the most?
There are so much stories, we listened terrible things and the most incredible was the naturalness
which they told us; I was really impressed and hurts me about the human beings’
viciousness, war is awful and watch it face to face is frightful.
It’s pretty interesting how every person that I met along the reportage wanted to tell me
his/her story share life details, that the whole world knows their stories, despite they were
combatants they are also human beings, they used to tell me: “We are not the monsters that
people think” they had the need to show the other side of the coin.
Do you consider coming out this reportage would generate more social awareness?
It was the main aim since the reportage began. First of all was very important analyze
my own experience living in a city, I had never seen or lived something like that, of
course broadcasting in the city was complicated because only a few people had lived war
inclemency’s, besides is not the same watching the war on TV. Despite that is was not
easy, I strived showing the human face of war, trying at least to expose a different outlook
of the situation ¡I expect have achieved this purpose!
As photographer I have always believed that gathering many outlooks about different
topics is important in order to approach problems on a different way that was taught
and try to understand there are more opinions and visions such valuable as ours.
EXPERIENCIAS EN FOCO
Was dangerous the place where you been?
As I said on the last question: It was quite dangerous for many reasons. I remember the
first night; people was explaining me things as: I had to check the boots before put on
them because I could find a spider or snake. Also it was required sleeping with an awning
because there were many animals who could infect me with more than 150 tropical
diseases; besides they used to warn me about bilateral ceasefire giving me different recommendations
in case of a bombardment or shootout.
What are the most frequent threats of this country people?
As I have described along the interview: These are critical regions with a lot of economic,
cultural and social difficulties. For example, you can see many poor houses, but
there are not hospitals, schools, aqueducts, electricity, neither grocery stores, furthermore
extreme climate conditions make harder peoples’ life quality. The most terrible situation
they had to cope with were war’s inclemency, in that place they couldn’t to be part of any
band, something terrible that I won’t desire anybody.
EXPERIENCIAS EN FOCO
What do they think about the peace agreements?
All the combatants who participated in the reportage agreed it was necessary putting
end to a more fifty years’ war, they felt tired and scared about this, they wanted to see
again their families, have new chances and think about a different future for themselves,
their families, their region and country. But they were also frighten if things gone bad,
they knew about the hate that many Colombian people felt for guerrilla, they knew it
wouldn’t be easy reintegrate to a mind-closed society as ours.
What do they think about violence in Colombia?
It has been one of the most tragic situations in the story of our nation and society, moreover
they have been part of this long conflict, the majority of combatants have broken
through social and familiar struggles, that’s why they are so distrustful, somehow they
had to give into the army because there were no more possibilities. Today they are glad
to know there are more options instead war, they are glad that grim violence is ending
finally, they are aware it is not an easy work, however it worth make the attempt.
EXPERIENCIAS EN FOCO
What is the best way to bring peace for Colombia?
I consider the best way is watching the problem from all the possible outlooks about armed
conflict and war in Colombia, we should also analyze carefully all the standpoints even the
most radical, try to understand them because the imposition of our opinion is already a violence
act.
Colombian society needs to know the reasons of war, its causes and consequences, watch the
other look, the other country unknown for thousands in order to understand the origin of
conflict and why we were struggling many years in a bloody conflict.
We are a very violent country, divided and full of hate and grudge, there are still open
wounds, but people keep struggling to make a shift in Colombian’s mindset accepting differences
to build a better country.

CDLL
Interview to David Ricardo Vázquez Garcia
(Audio Engineer)
CDLL
TEAR’S PATH
What was your inspiration in the telling of CDLL episodes?
The way of telling the episodes and other stories of the channel comes from a
constant search of innovation, creativity and also the lack of a budget. So we
have chosen audio and writing because we are more skilled at this. In this process,
before tell the story we get acquainted about “transmedia storytelling” and
these new episodes were an attempt to get in this new way to design contents.
The main story which includes narrations goes next to animations on YouTube,
second story goes through writing and images on Instagram and the radio of the
car where the protagonist travels is on Sound cloud.
What would be a brief summary about the stories you tell?
CDLL is not for everyone. We call it as an experimental miniseries for those
people who are looking for different and new content, innovation everywhere:
On the stories, the way of telling, and the means used to do it. ¡A worthwhile
opportunity!
How do you make the sounds?
It is a mix of sounds largely recorded on Tascam DR 40 (though we have used
the laptop’s microphone too).
What is the symbolic relation between sounds and images on the episodes?
Images abridge all the intentions on the stories, the whole idea, the emotions.
They are also a suspense element despite they don’t look like it, if you hear carefully
you can find that hidden relation.
Do you consider CDLL is a single author creation?
Not only CDLL, the whole channel. Since I learned stories are not only for
amusement, the goal has been become the stories in a vehicle of message.
“Storytelling for learning”. Stories which connect with yourself, your deepest nature,
emotions and thoughts. In other words, stories which give you a new point
of view.
How has been the response of the audience in the face of your storytelling?
That’s difficult to response because there is not enough feedback from the audience.
It’s complicated try to introduce something like that in a society which
prefers images rather sound. Nevertheless, we keep advocating for the sound,
because we believe in it and all the extraordinary benefits that it has to give. This
storytelling is a more personalized way (in a manner of speaking) because it
speaks straight to the individual’s imagination.
“Storytelling for learning”. Stories which connect with
yourself, your deepest nature, emotions and thoughts. In other
words, stories which give you a new point of view.
Why do you use animation?
We have tried several techniques to tell our stories. For example, stories with fixed photographs,
paintings on the sand or minimalist videos; even we developed something like a role-play
on Facebook. All of them were breaking through the boundaries which encouraged us
to be more creative. In this time, we had the chance to get acquainted with GIF animation as
a part of trial and error.
What can we expect new on CDLL?
“The grand final”. We are almost finishing, probably when this interview comes out, we already
have finished. ¡A worthwhile final! First episode which will have visuals more synchronized
to the story joining all the former visuals to in order to bring a new understanding to the
spectator.
After that, the channel will keep succeeding, bringing new and different stories. Eventually
we will have a parody, there will be more collaboration with narrators to create a new animation
called “The dreams kingdom”, we are going to talk you later about the audiogame and
more surprises that we are preparing for you.
