R ECF, I continue<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> impressed by our commun<strong>it</strong>y’s p<strong>as</strong>sion<br />

and comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> school’s mission,<br />

which is markedly different from o<strong>the</strong>r places I’ve<br />

taught and worked. This p<strong>as</strong>sion and comm<strong>it</strong>ment<br />

will serve <strong>as</strong> a solid foundation <strong>as</strong> we look ahead <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> coming challenges and opportun<strong>it</strong>ies.<br />

The 2008–2009 academic year brought many<br />

unexpected events from an economic recession <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> arrival of <strong>the</strong> H1N1 (swine flu) virus in New<br />

York C<strong>it</strong>y. I am happy <strong>to</strong> report that we successfully<br />

navigated through <strong>the</strong>se challenges and kept ECF<br />

healthy and on solid financial ground. The entire<br />

administrative team worked diligently on different<br />

cost-cutting in<strong>it</strong>iatives that would not <strong>to</strong>uch our extraordinary<br />

program. We spent time analyzing our<br />

budget and found savings w<strong>it</strong>h catering, consultants,<br />

postage, and o<strong>the</strong>r are<strong>as</strong>. We also made difficult<br />

decisions <strong>to</strong> cut some cap<strong>it</strong>al expenses and <strong>to</strong><br />

re-prior<strong>it</strong>ize maintenance projects. In <strong>the</strong> end, I am<br />

proud that we were able <strong>to</strong> produce a balanced budget<br />

while preserving our robust professional development<br />

for faculty and our remarkable educational<br />

and extracurricular programs. Judging from <strong>the</strong> successful<br />

admissions se<strong>as</strong>on and our strong incoming<br />

cl<strong>as</strong>ses, <strong>it</strong> is clear that parents very much value <strong>the</strong><br />

academically excellent progressive education we offer<br />

at ECF.<br />

One of my <strong>to</strong>p prior<strong>it</strong>ies is <strong>to</strong> make <strong>the</strong> ECF<br />

learning environment accessible <strong>to</strong> all qualified students,<br />

regardless of <strong>the</strong>ir family’s financial resources.<br />

Through <strong>the</strong>se difficult times, we remain comm<strong>it</strong>ted<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>as</strong>sisting families in need <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> those<br />

newly in need. Our admissions and financial aid<br />

team worked tirelessly <strong>to</strong> set up a fair and equ<strong>it</strong>able<br />

process <strong>to</strong> <strong>as</strong>sess and approve awards for current<br />

families. The team also continued our longstanding<br />

trad<strong>it</strong>ion of ensuring that our newly adm<strong>it</strong>ted cl<strong>as</strong>ses<br />

are reflective of Adler’s vision – a continuum of<br />

socio-economic levels. Our abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> support one<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r in times of need is a true testament <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

values and prior<strong>it</strong>ies of <strong>the</strong> ECF commun<strong>it</strong>y. This<br />

is a significant accomplishment, and even more<br />

encouraging is <strong>the</strong> news that participation in <strong>the</strong><br />

annual fund w<strong>as</strong> up significantly among parents,<br />

alumni, and faculty and staff. Thank you <strong>to</strong> all of<br />

<strong>the</strong> donors represented on <strong>the</strong> pages of this annual<br />

report for <strong>the</strong>ir generos<strong>it</strong>y and hard work. Toge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

<strong>the</strong>y helped us exceed our 2008-2009 fundraising<br />

goals and conclude our transformative cap<strong>it</strong>al campaign,<br />

Promises <strong>to</strong> Keep.<br />

This p<strong>as</strong>t year, I devoted considerable time <strong>to</strong><br />

learning about <strong>the</strong> rich his<strong>to</strong>ry and culture of <strong>the</strong><br />

school <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> our hopes for <strong>it</strong>s future from those<br />

who care most – faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and<br />

students. One particular message h<strong>as</strong> <strong>be</strong>en constant:<br />

Keep ECF special. Or in <strong>the</strong> words of this year’s<br />

Founder’s Day speaker, New York State Sena<strong>to</strong>r<br />

Daniel Squadron ’98, “Keep <strong>the</strong> Orange . . . hold<br />

tight <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> things that make Fields<strong>to</strong>n different.”<br />

W<strong>it</strong>h this uniqueness in mind, we have inst<strong>it</strong>uted<br />

many exc<strong>it</strong>ing in<strong>it</strong>iatives <strong>to</strong> build on our mission<br />

and core values. This year, we identified three are<strong>as</strong><br />

of focus that will keep ECF special and advance our<br />

important mission: Define progressive academically<br />

excellent education, enhance ethical learning, and<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n our comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> divers<strong>it</strong>y.<br />

To <strong>be</strong>tter understand what <strong>it</strong> means <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a<br />

progressive and academically excellent educational<br />

inst<strong>it</strong>ution in <strong>the</strong> 21st century, we <strong>be</strong>gan a process<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> entire faculty <strong>to</strong> re-examine <strong>the</strong> meaning<br />

and practice of progressive education. We explored<br />

what <strong>it</strong> means <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a leading progressive school,<br />

and what <strong>it</strong> should look like at ECF. These discussions,<br />

which will continue during <strong>the</strong> 2009–2010<br />

school year, are allowing us <strong>to</strong> review our comm<strong>it</strong>ment<br />

<strong>to</strong> our mission, build on our strengths, and<br />

develop innovative ways <strong>to</strong> maintain our leadership<br />

<strong>as</strong> an academically excellent progressive school.<br />

The emph<strong>as</strong>is on student voice and participation<br />

w<strong>it</strong>hin our school w<strong>as</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> re<strong>as</strong>ons why I<br />

chose <strong>to</strong> join ECF. L<strong>as</strong>t year I met w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> Form V<br />

and Form VI student advisory groups <strong>to</strong> hear about<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir ECF experience. Many expressed <strong>the</strong> “great<br />

freedom and power <strong>to</strong> change <strong>the</strong> school” <strong>as</strong> one<br />

of <strong>the</strong> unique <strong>as</strong>pects of <strong>the</strong> Fields<strong>to</strong>n experience.<br />

As we look <strong>to</strong> build on this trad<strong>it</strong>ion, we have <strong>be</strong>en<br />

<strong>see</strong>king ways <strong>to</strong> expand student participation. The<br />

new public purpose t<strong>as</strong>k force, which will include

DIANE SILVERMAN<br />

Fields<strong>to</strong>n’s musical, The Pajama Game, featured union pol<strong>it</strong>ics, romance, and a c<strong>as</strong>t brimming w<strong>it</strong>h talent!<br />

four students, will examine our schoolwide service<br />

programs and our inst<strong>it</strong>ution’s comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> civic<br />

engagement and ethical responsibil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> our commun<strong>it</strong>y.<br />

A separate student comm<strong>it</strong>tee w<strong>as</strong> created<br />

<strong>to</strong> involve more students in this ongoing study of<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y service. We also have two student representatives<br />

on <strong>the</strong> environmental t<strong>as</strong>k force, which<br />

w<strong>as</strong> formed in 2007–2008 and will continue <strong>to</strong> investigate<br />

ways we can reduce our carbon footprint<br />

and incre<strong>as</strong>e student awareness.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r highlight of <strong>the</strong> year w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> creation<br />

of our school’s new divers<strong>it</strong>y statement. It w<strong>as</strong> a<br />

ple<strong>as</strong>ure <strong>to</strong> partner w<strong>it</strong>h many mem<strong>be</strong>rs of our commun<strong>it</strong>y<br />

in this inclusive process. The statement will<br />

serve <strong>as</strong> a foundation for our work in <strong>the</strong> next few<br />

years. This spring, Hugo Mahabir and I met w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

<strong>the</strong> principals, <strong>as</strong>sistant principals, and divers<strong>it</strong>y coordina<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

<strong>to</strong> share <strong>the</strong> many ways we are already<br />

integrating issues of divers<strong>it</strong>y, equ<strong>it</strong>y, multiculturalism,<br />

and social justice in<strong>to</strong> our curriculum and our<br />

existing programs. W<strong>it</strong>h this information posted on<br />

our webs<strong>it</strong>e, we will <strong>be</strong>tter articulate our school’s<br />

comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> prospective families and identify<br />

are<strong>as</strong> we need <strong>to</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n in <strong>the</strong> coming years.<br />

I want <strong>to</strong> thank <strong>the</strong> entire commun<strong>it</strong>y for<br />

working <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r this p<strong>as</strong>t year <strong>to</strong> ensure that ECF<br />

remains such a unique commun<strong>it</strong>y. Participation is<br />

so important, <strong>as</strong> <strong>it</strong> helps us build <strong>the</strong> commun<strong>it</strong>y we<br />

want our children <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a part of, and I am grateful<br />

<strong>to</strong> all of our donors and volunteers who support and<br />

recognize this cr<strong>it</strong>ical need. Any account of <strong>the</strong> year<br />

would <strong>be</strong> incomplete w<strong>it</strong>hout a very special thanks<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> board of trustees, including board co-chairs,<br />

Laura Jacobs Blankfein ’71 and Tracy Chu<strong>to</strong>rian<br />

Semler ’82, for <strong>the</strong>ir leadership and support.<br />

As we embark on our strategic planning this<br />

year, I am grateful for <strong>the</strong> support of our board,<br />

parents, faculty, and alumni <strong>as</strong> we work <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong><br />

shape ECF’s future for our children and, <strong>to</strong> echo<br />

Adler’s vision, <strong>to</strong> <strong>see</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>it</strong> <strong>might</strong> <strong>be</strong>.<br />

T have brought exc<strong>it</strong>ing<br />

change and opportun<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> our <strong>be</strong>loved ECF. It<br />

w<strong>as</strong> a year marked by newness. The first year in<br />

<strong>the</strong> tenure of our new head of school, Mark Stanek,<br />

paired w<strong>it</strong>h new board leadership, prompted a great<br />

deal of introspection about who we are <strong>as</strong> an inst<strong>it</strong>ution,<br />

and how we can and should “live <strong>the</strong> mission”<br />

set forth by Felix Adler over 130 years ago.<br />

Highlights of our mission-driven work this<br />

year include <strong>the</strong> following:<br />

■ <strong>the</strong> creation of a public purpose t<strong>as</strong>k force, <strong>to</strong><br />

focus on <strong>the</strong> ways in which ECF can and does<br />

engage in service, <strong>the</strong> resources we use <strong>to</strong> do so,<br />

and <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>to</strong> which <strong>the</strong>se experiences have<br />

a significant and enduring impact on <strong>the</strong> <strong>world</strong><br />

around us;<br />

■ <strong>the</strong> establishment of a schoolwide divers<strong>it</strong>y<br />

statement that will help guide our work in this<br />

important arena and emph<strong>as</strong>ize our comm<strong>it</strong>ment<br />

<strong>to</strong> a thriving diverse commun<strong>it</strong>y;<br />

■ a careful examination of <strong>the</strong> issue of affordabil<strong>it</strong>y<br />

of an ECF education, and <strong>the</strong> ways in which<br />

we must support our students both financially<br />

and culturally throughout <strong>the</strong>ir years at ECF.<br />

We also worked hard during this year’s particularly<br />

challenging budget process <strong>to</strong> find extra financial<br />

aid dollars for families who found <strong>the</strong>mselves<br />

struggling, for <strong>the</strong> first time, <strong>to</strong> pay tu<strong>it</strong>ion.<br />

There are never enough words <strong>to</strong> express thanks<br />

<strong>to</strong> those who have made our commun<strong>it</strong>y thrive<br />

all year. We offer our deepest thanks <strong>to</strong> outgoing<br />

P&T chair Judy Mills-Johnson, for her tireless efforts<br />

<strong>to</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n our commun<strong>it</strong>y. Her innovative<br />

programs – Spring Awakening, ECF at <strong>the</strong> Movies,<br />

and Inside <strong>the</strong> Cl<strong>as</strong>sroom – brought hundreds of us<br />

<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> appreciate and share <strong>the</strong> great resources<br />

this commun<strong>it</strong>y h<strong>as</strong> <strong>to</strong> offer. We warmly welcome<br />

Mel Wymore, who replaces Judy in <strong>the</strong> P&T chair<br />

role, and we look forward <strong>to</strong> working w<strong>it</strong>h her this<br />

year. We particularly wish <strong>to</strong> thank, from <strong>the</strong> bot<strong>to</strong>m<br />

of our hearts, <strong>the</strong> dozens of volunteers who<br />

made April in Paris an enormous success, both <strong>as</strong> a<br />

fund-raising and a commun<strong>it</strong>y-building event.<br />

After years of hard work and generos<strong>it</strong>y on <strong>the</strong><br />

part of <strong>the</strong> entire ECF commun<strong>it</strong>y, we salute <strong>the</strong><br />

conclusion of <strong>the</strong> Promises <strong>to</strong> Keep cap<strong>it</strong>al campaign,<br />

which provided vibrant new and renovated facil<strong>it</strong>ies<br />

where our programs are thriving <strong>as</strong> never <strong>be</strong>fore. We<br />

extend special thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> campaign’s dedicated<br />

volunteers and <strong>it</strong>s co-chairs, Ro<strong>be</strong>rt Pruzan ’81 and<br />

Laura Jacobs Blankfein ’71.<br />

We also cheer our 2008–2009 annual fund<br />

co-chairs, Nina P. Freedman ’73 and Michael Nott;<br />

our new development head, Wh<strong>it</strong>ney Namm Pollack;<br />

and our army of volunteers and donors, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> remarkable achievement of reaching our annual<br />

fund goal in a difficult economic climate. The unprecedented<br />

incre<strong>as</strong>e in giving from many const<strong>it</strong>uencies<br />

– including parents, alumni, faculty, and staff<br />

– is a tribute <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hard work and allows ECF <strong>to</strong><br />

continue <strong>to</strong> offer <strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st education possible <strong>to</strong> our<br />

children.<br />

We congratulate Mark Stanek on <strong>the</strong> work he<br />

h<strong>as</strong> done <strong>to</strong> bring us <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>as</strong> a commun<strong>it</strong>y and<br />

<strong>to</strong> sharpen <strong>the</strong> inst<strong>it</strong>ution’s focus on mission-driven<br />

work. We very much look forward <strong>to</strong> working w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

him in <strong>the</strong> coming years.<br />

I S, severe stresses <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> financial<br />

market accelerated an economic downturn affecting<br />

families and inst<strong>it</strong>utions alike. Here at ECF,<br />

<strong>it</strong> created advers<strong>it</strong>y for some of our families and<br />

uncertainty for those of us who raise <strong>the</strong> funds <strong>to</strong><br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n and expand <strong>it</strong>s curriculum and program.<br />

We did not shy away from this challenge. In <strong>the</strong><br />

face of this turbulence, I am proud <strong>to</strong> report that<br />

our commun<strong>it</strong>y of parents, alumni, faculty, staff,<br />

and students joined <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> support <strong>the</strong> school<br />

this p<strong>as</strong>t year in many new and impressive ways.<br />

We raised a <strong>to</strong>tal of $9,600,000 from c<strong>as</strong>h gifts<br />

and collections on previously pledged donations.<br />

On June 30, 2009 we successfully concluded<br />

<strong>the</strong> Promises <strong>to</strong> Keep campaign, w<strong>it</strong>h 371 donors<br />

and $53,500,000 <strong>to</strong>tal raised. The success of this<br />

campaign is <strong>the</strong> direct result of this commun<strong>it</strong>y’s<br />

hard work and comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> prior<strong>it</strong>ies of <strong>the</strong><br />

school. The campaign, launched in May 2005, w<strong>as</strong><br />

an outgrowth of years of strategic planning and effectively<br />

transformed <strong>the</strong> school, enabling us <strong>to</strong><br />

meet new educational goals, including <strong>the</strong> launch<br />

of <strong>the</strong> new middle school (grades 6-8) and new and<br />

renovated spaces for academics, performing arts,<br />

and athletics.<br />

This year, a num<strong>be</strong>r of donors have come<br />

forward <strong>to</strong> pledge nearly $1,400,000 <strong>to</strong> support<br />

financial aid. Thanks <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>se gifts and <strong>the</strong> continued<br />

strength of our annual fund, we were able <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>as</strong>sist families who have <strong>be</strong>en experiencing financial<br />

hardship this year. According <strong>to</strong> our chief financial<br />

officer, Michael Hwang, we are <strong>be</strong>ginning <strong>the</strong> new<br />

fiscal year in a good pos<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>to</strong> address <strong>the</strong> school’s<br />

emergency and current-use financial needs.<br />

The school h<strong>as</strong> <strong>see</strong>n a strong incre<strong>as</strong>e in participation<br />

in our annual fund from all const<strong>it</strong>uencies<br />

and a four percent incre<strong>as</strong>e in <strong>to</strong>tal dollars raised.<br />

We surp<strong>as</strong>sed our goal in large part <strong>be</strong>cause of <strong>the</strong><br />

many parent, alumni, and student volunteers who<br />

effectively carried <strong>the</strong> important message about unrestricted<br />

giving throughout <strong>the</strong> commun<strong>it</strong>y. Special<br />

thanks are due <strong>to</strong> Nina P. Freedman ’73 and Michael<br />

Nott, co-chairs of <strong>the</strong> annual fund, along w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong><br />

P&T all school fundraising comm<strong>it</strong>tee, chaired by<br />

8<br />

Lisa Kadin and Lara Holtz, P&T chair Judy Mills-<br />

Johnson, and <strong>be</strong>nef<strong>it</strong> co-chairs Mallory Hu<strong>be</strong>rman<br />

and Lisa Seidman. Seven hundred mem<strong>be</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong><br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y celebrated <strong>the</strong> school at April in Paris,<br />

<strong>the</strong> P&T annual fund <strong>be</strong>nef<strong>it</strong>, which raised over<br />

$530,000. We were ple<strong>as</strong>ed that 70 parents volunteered<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir time <strong>to</strong> make this a great event.<br />

For <strong>the</strong> first time, our faculty joined <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and formed a faculty fundraising comm<strong>it</strong>tee. This<br />

resulted in 110 new faculty and staff donors <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

school. Our board of trustee co-chairs, Laura Jacobs<br />

Blankfein ’71 and Tracy Chu<strong>to</strong>rian Semler ’82, join<br />

me in saluting <strong>the</strong> faculty and staff who already give<br />

so much of <strong>the</strong>mselves for once again demonstrating<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> school.<br />

This year we were also delighted <strong>to</strong> welcome a<br />

new direc<strong>to</strong>r for inst<strong>it</strong>utional advancement, Wh<strong>it</strong>ney<br />

Namm Pollack, who joined ECF in January<br />

2009 from <strong>the</strong> Robin Hood Foundation. Appointing<br />

her <strong>to</strong> lead our commun<strong>it</strong>y’s development effort<br />

will help effectively and efficiently advance ECF’s<br />

mission. As a parent, alumnus, and trustee, I extend<br />

my heartfelt thanks <strong>to</strong> those who help ensure our<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y’s ongoing success.<br />

I’ <strong>to</strong> <strong>be</strong> a mem<strong>be</strong>r of <strong>the</strong> ECF commun<strong>it</strong>y<br />

and <strong>to</strong> lead <strong>the</strong> office for inst<strong>it</strong>utional<br />

advancement and alumni (OIAA). From my experience<br />

since January, I know that this is a vibrant,<br />

caring commun<strong>it</strong>y, deeply motivated by our school’s<br />

mission.<br />

Toge<strong>the</strong>r w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> trustees, parents, alumni,<br />

faculty and staff, and head of school, we have raised<br />

$3,467,000, including <strong>the</strong> April in Paris <strong>be</strong>nef<strong>it</strong>, for<br />

<strong>the</strong> annual fund. We have incre<strong>as</strong>ed our participation<br />

rates in every category this year. I want <strong>to</strong> share<br />

some of those percentages w<strong>it</strong>h you, <strong>be</strong>cause <strong>the</strong>y<br />

demonstrate <strong>the</strong> commun<strong>it</strong>y’s depth and breadth of<br />

comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> ECF:<br />

■ 31 percent incre<strong>as</strong>e in parent participation:<br />

Now 68 percent of our parents give <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual<br />

fund; l<strong>as</strong>t year 52 percent of parents participated.<br />

■ 14 percent incre<strong>as</strong>e in alumni participation:<br />

Now 16 percent of our alumni give <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual<br />

fund; l<strong>as</strong>t year 14 percent of our alumni<br />

participated.<br />

■ 850 percent growth in faculty and staff participation!<br />

This may look like a typographical<br />

error, but <strong>it</strong> is very real. We have welcomed 110<br />

faculty and staff <strong>as</strong> donors <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual fund, a<br />

huge incre<strong>as</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> previous year.<br />

■ 50 percent growth in grandparent participation:<br />

We now have 132 grandparents giving,<br />

or 9 percent of <strong>the</strong> grandparent population, up<br />

from 6 percent l<strong>as</strong>t year.<br />

■ 81 percent of all new parents participated in<br />

<strong>the</strong> annual fund – up from 72 percent l<strong>as</strong>t year,<br />

for a 13 percent incre<strong>as</strong>e.<br />

We are also proud <strong>to</strong> recognize 392 Loyal Oaks,<br />

mem<strong>be</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong> ECF commun<strong>it</strong>y who have given <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> annual fund for 10 or more consecutive years.<br />

This represents an eight percent incre<strong>as</strong>e over <strong>the</strong><br />

previous year.<br />

One of our <strong>to</strong>p prior<strong>it</strong>ies is <strong>to</strong> incre<strong>as</strong>e participation<br />

and widen commun<strong>it</strong>y support for ECF, <strong>to</strong><br />

encourage <strong>the</strong> spir<strong>it</strong> of giving back <strong>to</strong> help advance<br />

<strong>the</strong> school’s mission. To that end, we will <strong>be</strong> partnering<br />

again w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> P&T <strong>to</strong> involve even more<br />

mem<strong>be</strong>rs of <strong>the</strong> parent commun<strong>it</strong>y <strong>as</strong> annual fund<br />

volunteers. We will also <strong>be</strong> working closely w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong><br />

Alumni Volunteer Network and o<strong>the</strong>r alumni leaders<br />

so that we can engage more alumni in <strong>the</strong> ECF<br />

commun<strong>it</strong>y. Recognizing <strong>the</strong> cr<strong>it</strong>ical role alumni<br />

can play in <strong>the</strong> life of our school, we created a new<br />

pos<strong>it</strong>ion, direc<strong>to</strong>r of alumni giving, <strong>to</strong> help lead<br />

<strong>the</strong>se efforts. Sarah Danzig Simon ’96 joined OIAA<br />

in that role in May, and she will partner w<strong>it</strong>h Toby<br />

Himmel, direc<strong>to</strong>r of alumni relations, <strong>to</strong> streng<strong>the</strong>n<br />

our alumni program and continue <strong>to</strong> incre<strong>as</strong>e alumni<br />

participation rates. On June 30, 2009 we concluded<br />

our cap<strong>it</strong>al campaign, Promises <strong>to</strong> Keep, w<strong>it</strong>h<br />

371 donors participating, a record for our school.<br />

The campaign co-chairs, Ro<strong>be</strong>rt Pruzan ’81 and<br />

Laura Jacobs Blankfein ’71, and senior volunteers<br />

Nina P. Freedman ’73, Tracy Chu<strong>to</strong>rian Semler ’82,<br />

John Beres ’81, Nicol Mal<strong>as</strong> ’91, and Jon May ’84<br />

have worked tirelessly for <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t five years on this<br />

transformative campaign.<br />

This h<strong>as</strong> also <strong>be</strong>en a lively year for Fields<strong>to</strong>n<br />

alumni events and programs, including regional<br />

receptions in Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco<br />

which introduced our new head of school<br />

<strong>to</strong> alumni. Our largest event, <strong>the</strong> June Fields<strong>to</strong>n<br />

reunion, attracted 329 alumni and guests from 10<br />

different cl<strong>as</strong>ses. Over <strong>the</strong> year, our department<br />

produced over 40 events, including new parent dinners,<br />

phone-a-thons, homecoming activ<strong>it</strong>ies, all <strong>to</strong><br />

share <strong>the</strong> ECF message.<br />

This h<strong>as</strong> <strong>be</strong>en a challenging year of trans<strong>it</strong>ion<br />

and economic uncertainty, and none of this work<br />

would have <strong>be</strong>en accomplished w<strong>it</strong>hout some very<br />

important partners. I would like <strong>to</strong> extend my deepest<br />

thanks <strong>to</strong> our board of trustees’ inst<strong>it</strong>utional advancement<br />

comm<strong>it</strong>tee, P&T chair Judy Mills-Johnson,<br />

w<strong>as</strong> one constant: an unwavering support for<br />

<strong>the</strong> mission of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ethical</strong> <strong>Culture</strong> Fields<strong>to</strong>n<br />

<strong>School</strong>. Our families, alumni, and friends came <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r<br />

and demonstrated <strong>the</strong>ir comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

school. Faculty and staff also stepped up in reducing<br />

expend<strong>it</strong>ures by <strong>be</strong>ing more creative and frugal<br />

in <strong>the</strong>ir day-<strong>to</strong>-day operations. We turned <strong>to</strong> many<br />

“open” or “free” technology resources, participated<br />

in more local workshops and conferences, and utilized<br />

old inven<strong>to</strong>ry for supplies. All <strong>the</strong>se efforts<br />

helped <strong>to</strong> offset some of <strong>the</strong> impact from volatile<br />

changes in our endowment and interest income.<br />

We continued <strong>to</strong> improve campus facil<strong>it</strong>ies<br />

w<strong>it</strong>h a significantly lower budget by relying on <strong>the</strong><br />

expertise of our facil<strong>it</strong>ies staff, ra<strong>the</strong>r than outside<br />

contrac<strong>to</strong>rs, for non-construction related projects.<br />

At <strong>Ethical</strong> <strong>Culture</strong>, we upgraded <strong>the</strong> stairc<strong>as</strong>e on<br />

63rd Street, helping <strong>to</strong> alleviate congestion in <strong>the</strong><br />

main lobby during dismissal, and installed new<br />

energy-efficient and acoustically-sound windows in<br />

<strong>the</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>srooms w<strong>it</strong>h obvious <strong>be</strong>nef<strong>it</strong>s. At Fields<strong>to</strong>n<br />

Lower, we completely renovated <strong>the</strong> main k<strong>it</strong>chen,<br />

including a new s<strong>to</strong>ve and dishw<strong>as</strong>her. At Fields<strong>to</strong>n<br />

Middle, we put up full-length walls in faculty<br />

offices in <strong>the</strong> academic centers, allowing for more<br />

privacy, while also establishing more of a cl<strong>as</strong>sroom<br />

atmosphere in <strong>the</strong> academic centers <strong>the</strong>mselves. At<br />

both <strong>the</strong> <strong>Ethical</strong> <strong>Culture</strong> and Fields<strong>to</strong>n campuses,<br />

we applied fresh paint and repaired frequently traveled<br />

hallway are<strong>as</strong> <strong>as</strong> well <strong>as</strong> ceilings, cl<strong>as</strong>srooms,<br />

and bathrooms.<br />

We expanded our summer recreational programs<br />

<strong>to</strong> take advantage of under-utilized facil<strong>it</strong>y<br />

space, adding two new ones, Weeks of Discovery<br />

and Sports Camp. These two programs proved <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>be</strong> very successful, w<strong>it</strong>h many current students participating.<br />

Fields<strong>to</strong>n Outdoors, in <strong>it</strong>s second year<br />

back on <strong>the</strong> Fields<strong>to</strong>n campus following <strong>the</strong> construction,<br />

continued <strong>to</strong> flourish, providing one of<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>be</strong>st and unique summer camps in <strong>the</strong> c<strong>it</strong>y. Our<br />

related programs, Fields<strong>to</strong>n Enrichment Program<br />

(FEP) and Young Dancemakers, also enjoyed successful<br />

summers at Fields<strong>to</strong>n.<br />

None of <strong>the</strong>se achievements could have taken<br />

place w<strong>it</strong>hout <strong>the</strong> support of <strong>the</strong> group of dedicated<br />

and talented individuals in finance and administration,<br />

managed by Gene Kivlan, Joe Piselli, Donna<br />

Price, Orlando Rivera, Roura Rosales-Rosario, and<br />

Trish Shel<strong>to</strong>n. Mem<strong>be</strong>rs of our volunteer board<br />

comm<strong>it</strong>tees have provided expertise, support, and<br />

countless hours <strong>to</strong> our efforts, and I would like <strong>to</strong><br />

acknowledge <strong>the</strong> aud<strong>it</strong> comm<strong>it</strong>tee, chaired by Nino<br />
