Modernism Week’s signature February festival will 

take place February 15-25, 2018, highlighting 

midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and 

landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm 

Springs area of Southern California. For the thirteenth 

year, the annual 11-day festival will feature 

a wide array of events including the Palm Springs 

Modernism Show & Sale, tours of iconic homes in 

more than 23 neighborhoods (including the Signature 

Home Tour on both weekends), architectural 

walking, biking and double-decker bus tours, tours 

of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, 

classic cars, garden tours, a vintage travel trailer 

exhibition, nightly parties and a special series of 

talks about Frank Lloyd Wright, Preservation, and 

Legendary Women of Design. All events are open 

to the public and tickets go on sale November 

1, 2017 at 12 p.m. PST at modernismweek.com. 

Attendees will be able to preview the events on the 

website without making purchases starting October 

25. A portion of ticket proceeds benefit Modernism 

Week (a non-profit organization) and other local 

preservation, neighborhood and community groups. 

As additional events are finalized they will be added 

for sale on the website on the first of each month. 

“Modernism Week continues to expand the scope 

and reach of our events and programming,” 

said William Kopelk, Modernism Week Board 

Chairman. “This year, we will continue that trend 

by offering new events and educational opportunities 

while still featuring the beloved favorites that 

our audience anticipates. We will offer a compelling 

combination of educational talks and film

Signature Events 

One of the highlights of the first weekend includes 

the annual Modernism Week Opening Night Party 

on Thursday, February 15, presented by Ferguson 

Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Gallery. This chic red 

carpet affair will be teeming with vintage style 

and authentic swagger as attendees channel their 

inner Marilyn, Sammy or Hefner, for a night of 

entertainment, high style and glamour. The popular 

event will take place at the 1962 Indian Canyons 

Golf Resort, designed by Donald Wexler and 

Richard Harrison. The Canyon Country Club, as it 

was originally known, has a legendary history as 

a favorite spot of Hollywood icons including Frank 

Sinatra, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Walt Disney

evening will be over the top with expansive indoor and 

outdoor lounges, abundant and decadent hors d’oeuvres 

provided by Lulu California Bistro, and an open 

bar that offers specialty Rat Pack-era cocktails featuring 

Hendrick’s Gin. Attendees will dance the night away to 

the tunes of retro performer DJ Baz and a swinging show 

by The Dreamboats, an upbeat retro Rock & Roll group, 

back by popular demand, courtesy of Corian Design. 

New Events 

Fans of midcentury-era Hollywood films will enjoy 

Hollywood Revisited, a stunning musical revue that 

showcases a dazzling lineup of costumes worn by the 

stars in original Hollywood films. Set to the music that 

defined the times and presented by top notch Broadway 

and Hollywood performers, Hollywood Revisited 

lets the audience experience historic costume designs 

of Hollywood’s Golden Age. 

Participants of the Modernism Week Signature Home 

Tour will be able to either drive themselves on the tour 

route or upgrade to a new VIP chauffeur experience 

in which up to three participants will be able to ride in 

a style in Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUVs and finish the tour 

with an exclusive private reception. 

Midcentury modern places of worship will be highlighted 

in two new tours this year. The first tour, “Sacred 

Places - Modern Church Tour,” will feature more than 

seven houses of worship and emphasize how the architecture 

of the structure was designed to augment the 

purpose of the building. Temple Isaiah in Palm Springs 

will also be featured in a separate tour entitled 

“Architecture in Service of the Sacred and Spiritual” 

that contrasts the historic E. Stewart Williams structure 

with the 1980’s west-facing addition designed by 

David Christian. 

For the last few years, Modernism Week has offered attendees 

the opportunity to join home tours and architectural 

excursions outside of the immediate Palm Springs 

area. This successful expansion continues in 2018 with 

home tours planned in surrounding desert cities including 

Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Indian Wells. 

Donald Wexler’s classic 1964 Dinah Shore estate 

will be open to the public for a special Modernism 

Week event called A Night at the Dinah Shore Estate 

on Saturday, February 17. The party, a fundraiser for 

Save Iconic Architecture, will feature cocktails and the 

ability to explore this architectural gem. Save Iconic 

Architecture works to prevent the demise of unique and 

relevant properties in southern California.

Chef Brandon Testi has been classically trained in

industry. His style of cooking tends to lean toward 

a fresh, clean, and contemporary California fusion

Attendees of The Chase know to pace themselves 

during the evening so they have energy left for 

its famous after-party, which will feature a DJ, a 

performance by Thelma Houston, and a series of 

tightly guarded surprises revealed as guests dance 

the night away in a lounge created inside the Palm 

Springs Convention Center. Guests of the after party 

can expect her signature blend of high- energy 

dance classics and soulful ballads. 

Thelma Houston may be best known for the worldwide 

success of her disco anthem “Don’t Leave 

Me This Way”, but her support of AIDS Services 

organizations is also legendary. She is known for 

her dedication to humanitarian causes, including 

tireless efforts in the battle against AIDS and deep 

commitments to the Human Rights Campaign 

(HRC). In 2013, the City of West Hollywood named 

January 29th “Thelma Houston Day” in recognition 

of her many charitable activities.

Lori Weiner

It was a sunny day when we pulled into the Barkingham 

Palace Pet Hotel California. We stepped past 

sculptures into the entryway and entered a stylish lobby 

with sparkling clean floors, a sporty seating area, 

and a smiling front desk staff. This is nice! It is a Luxury 

Pet Boarding & Grooming Spa in the Palm Springs 

Area. Servicing both residents and visitors to the Desert 

Cities with 24/7 onsite staff and cameras throughout the 

facility, they offer safety, fun and luxury for dogs, cats 

and birds. Founder and owner, Lori Weiner is the woman 

behind this luxurious treat for our furry friends. We 

decided to join her at the hotel to see what inspired the 

new property.

There are four

Levvy: What was your first pet, Lori? 

Lori: My first pet was an Afghan. And I 

have had Borzoi (Russian Wolfhounds). 

LC: You have horses also? 

LW: We had this friend, Kerry, who came 

to live with us. He took care of a hundred 

unit kennel in Australia. He was a real dog 

person, with a on-staff groomer. He had 

a way with animals. Later we rescued six 

thoroughbreds who were scheduled to 

be put down. We shipped them out here 

from New York and had these horses. 

And it was Kerry who helped Barkingham 

get started in 2011. We originally leased 

the building and then each year we kept 

growing and now we are Barkingham Pet 

Hotel California. So this whole thing got 

started with Kerry.

LC: And now you are expanding with this

LW: We have grown and the new 

space is 22,000 square feet. And 

now we own the property. And it 

just feels right. Next year we’ll be 

developing our 24-hour Emergency 

Veterinary Clinic. I really feel there 

is a need for a 24-hour vet clinic in 

the center of the Valley so that we 

can be of service to the animals. So 

that will be really nice to have on 

the premises. 

LC: Lori, how many ‘bedrooms’ 

are there in your hotel? May I say 

‘bedrooms’? 

LW: Yes you may. They are suites, 

and there are four hotels here in 

one hotel. One of them is Mandarin 

Orien’tail. Then we have the 

Paw’ninsula, The Sunset Barkee, 

and then we have THE W’oof. In all, 

we have 65 suites with faux painting 

and beautiful floors and comfortable 

bedding. 

LC: The interior design is so nice 

and comforting for the animals and 

their owners! 

LW: We have human king size and 

queen size beds for them. And 

nice flat screen tvs for them to 

enjoy. There also will be webcams 

for owners to check on their loved 

ones. My whole thing here is to 

make sure the pets are comfortable 

and that they feel like they are 

home. 

LC: I love that! 

LW: It is a good sign when you see 

dogs hop out of the cars and race 

for the front door. 

Sometimes they don’t want to 

leave. They are just happy to be 

here. So that keeps them stressfree 

and in good hands. My staff 

spends a lot of quality time with 

our four-legged guests.

is a added personal dedicated staff 

member assigned to that dog to 

attend to their needs. 

LC: Also, there is a lake outside? 

LW: It is a man-made lake with 

boulders and running water down

from play if they need to. It’s like

LC: You also sell dog products? 

LW: I am a Clinical Certified Animal 

Nutritionist so I only bring in the top 

of the line dog foods. I research the 

product to check things. Like , if the 

product was cooked at a high heat, 

many nutrients would be cooked 

out. So products cooked at a lower 

heat are best. We are a distributor for 

Young Living Therapeutic Grade Essential 

Oils. One of the supplements that 

we sell is Cran-triC, which is cranberry 

with vitimin C to support the immune 

and urinary track systems. 

LC: You also rescue dogs that are in 

desperate need of help? 

LW: Yes my heart just goes out to 

these animals! So we find them ‘forever 

homes’.

PAWS? 

LW: In the new facility, we are able to 

house 18 rescue animals at a time. We 

have had right at 100 or 105 pet rescue 

adoptions! We network with others like 

Animal Camp in Thousand Palms. We all 

work together. 

And Sabastian Reich, who is on our 

board, helps so much in finding homes 

for the rescues. 

LC: Sabastian has an amazing heart. It is 

a perfect fit here. 

Barkingham Pet Hotel California also 

commits itself to many charities throughout 

the season. 

LW: It makes me happy to help out with 

these various organizations, offering our 

services for them to use as fundraising. 

We also donate our services for them to 

auction at the galas to help them raise 

needed monies. 

LC: So Lori there is some ‘breaking’ big 

news going on with your book? 

LW: Yes, the books on Amazon, Borders 

when it was open (I did book signings 

there), and Barnes & Noble. So I have two 

books available. I wrote the first book in 

2007. 

Juli: And you have gotten some nibbles 

for a TV series based on your book? 

LW: My publisher contacted me and we 

met at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles 

with producers. So, we’ll see. 

LC: Thank you Lori for your gracious

ALZHEIMERS COACHELLA VALLEY OFFICE 

NOW OPEN IN 

BERGER FOUNDATION CENTER 

Alzheimers Coachella Valley (ACV), a new community 

based 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) nonprofit organization, will be 

open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

starting Jan. 2, 2018 in the Berger Foundation Building, 

42600 Cook Street, Ste. 125. Phone number is 

(760) 776-3100. 

The office will be staffed by trained volunteers who 

can respond to callers and drop-in visitors with 

information and care advisor referrals for further 

support. During after-hours and weekends, phones 

will be answered by on-call staff. 

Alzheimers Coachella Valley, formed by a group of 

concerned local volunteers, is dedicated to improving 

community health by providing needed professional 

and peer-led programs for persons diagnosed 

with cognitive impairment, their care-partners and 

families. 

One hundred percent of monies raised in the 

Coachella Valley remain in the community to fill an 

ever-growing need for programs such as ongoing 

caregiver support groups; “Breathing Space,” 

scholarship dollars for respite care; “Traveling the 

Journey Together,” an eight-week series for the 

diagnosed patient and care-partner; as well as 

public and professional education. State approved 

Continuing Education Unit courses are available 

at ACV starting at the end of January. 

Support groups are caregiver-driven programs 

that provide a safe place for those caring for 

someone with cognitive impairment where they 

can discuss with others in the same situation 

the challenges and feelings of being a caregiver. 

Attendees gain skills and resources to ensure a 

better quality of life for the caregiver and the 

individual with the disease. 

Current ACV-led support groups are at Vista 

Cove, Rancho Mirage; Mission Hills Senior Living, 

Rancho Mirage; Mizell Community Center, Palm 

Springs; and at the ACV office. 

Starting in January, the first “Traveling the Journey 

Together” 8-week program begins at the ACV 

office. An evaluation meeting with the facilitators 

is required to ensure the program is appropriate 

for the diagnosed patient. 

Alzheimer’s Coachella Valley’s has qualified 

speakers available to talk to business organizations, 

churches, homeowner associations, and 

other community resource centers.

Author, Food & Wine’s Special Projects Director, 

and Judge on Bravo’s Top Chef Returns to The Valley 

Gail Simmons is a trained culinary expert, food 

writer, and dynamic television personality. Since 

the show’s inception in 2006, she has lent her 

extensive expertise as a permanent judge on 

Bravo’s Emmy-winning series Top Chef. Heading 

into its 15th successful season, Top Chef is rated 

the No. 1 food show on cable television. Gail 

was previously head critic on Top Chef Masters 

and host of Top Chef Just Desserts, Bravo’s pastry-focused 

spinoff of the Top Chef franchise. She 

appears as a guest judge on Universal Kids’ new 

Top Chef Jr. and was co-host of The Feed, which 

aired in 2014 on FYI. 

Her first cookbook, Bringing It Home: Favorite 

Recipes from a Life of Adventurous Eating, will be 

released by Grand Central Publishing on October 

24, 2017. The book features recipes inspired 

by Gail’s world travels — all made with accessible 

ingredients and smart, simple techniques for 

successful family meals and easy entertaining. 

Gail joined Food & Wine magazine in 2004, 

where she directs special projects, working 

closely with the country’s top culinary talent and 

acting as liaison between the marketing and editorial 

teams on events and chef-related initiatives. 

During her tenure, she has been responsible for 

overseeing the annual Classic in Aspen, America’s 

premier culinary event. Prior to working at 

Food & Wine, Gail was the special events manager 

for Chef Daniel Boulud’s restaurant empire. 

Born and raised in Toronto, Gail moved to New 

York City in 1999 to attend culinary school at 

what is now the Institute of Culinary Education.

credited chef and restaurateur Zack Bruell with

acid to decalcify the tooth. It is called dental 

plaque and it forms very quick after eating. 

The better hygiene a person has, the less 

they will have decay. It takes both sugar and 

plaque to decay a tooth. The more you brush 

and floss, the more plaque removed and the 

less risk of decay. 

Additionally, elderly patients also tend to have 

more decay. It is more obvious with elderly 

patients who are loosing their dexterity, and 

in general they tend to eat more sweets more 

often, and not brush as often. 

There is also another component that needs 

to be explained here. In the mouth there are 

several types of bacteria. Some are responsible 

for gum disease and some are responsible 

for decay. Some people may have the best 

hygiene and still have gum disease and some 

who have the worst hygiene may not suffer 

from gum disease at all. This is because they 

do not have the bacteria responsible for gum 

disease. Same thing for decay. Some people 

will be more susceptible to decay then others 

even if they eat just a little sugar and have 

decent dental hygiene. That is because they 

have that kind of bacteria in their mouth in a 

higher rate then another person. But that is 

not a reasonable excuse. More brushing 

and plaque control with a topical fluoride 

application daily, preferably with a special 

personal tray made at the dental office will 

help. 

Very rarely a person will suffer from gum 

disease and a high rate of decay. It is 

generally one or the other. If someone has 

a high rate of decay, in general they will 

not suffer from gum disease like bone loss, 

periodontal pockets and tooth mobility. 

It is a proven fact though, that the better 

the dental hygiene you have and the better 

your diet is in terms of limiting sugar intake, 

the healthier your gums and teeth will be. 

So, it is not true that decay affect only 

kids. As long as you have one tooth in your 

mouth you are subject to get decay if you 

leave dental plaque on it and eat sugar! 

The best way to prevent that is to have 

good dental hygiene at home and brushing 

after any sugar intake, and to visit your 

dentist 2 to 3 times a year.

Do you think that dental cavities are 

problems only for children? 

It is a general belief that cavities are for kids 

only. But in fact, cavities affect all ages! 

The reason why cavities are more prevalent 

in children is mainly the fact that they tend 

to eat more sugar and have poor hygiene 

habits. However, when looking at the cause 

of decay, which is basically plaque with the 

presence of sugar, it is easy to understand 

that cavities can happen at any age even if 

your mouth is full of crowns. 

Of course there are some people who have 

teeth that are softer then others and are 

easier to decay but that affects only 1% of 

the population. Basically any diet rich in 

sugar will increase your chance of decay. 

Soft drinks, candies and anything sweet 

will have a potency to create decay in the 

presence of dental plaque. Of course in 

order to create decay there has to be the 

bacteria that will transfer the sugar into

Seamus “Jim” MacDonnell 

Repurposes Flowers to Bring Cheer 

It all began in 2003 when Seamus “Jim” McDonnell 

walked into a flower shop the day after Mother’s 

Day and asked if he could have the leftovers. 

The florist was glad to be rid of them and Mc- 

Donnell was more than glad to present them to 

six, bed-ridden widows in his hospice care. The 

flowers did more than brighten their day. The 

flowers were therapeutic and were accepted 

with tears of joy. 

From such humble beginnings, McDonnell created 

a nonprofit charity called The Flower Bank. 

Seven days a week he and his volunteers deliver 

flowers to Coachella Valley seniors in hospices, 

nursing homes and care centers. So far this 

year The Flower Bank has delivered more than 

500,000 flowers.

Starting at 7 a.m. McDonnell and his volunteers 

call on Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and other supermarkets 

to pick up the flowers and plants that 

will be “repurposed”. Then they load up their 

vans and cars and make deliveries to more than 

30 care facilities. 

McDonnell once filled an entire room with roses 

for an ailing, elderly woman. Another patient 

who had mentioned how much she liked sunflowers 

awakened one morning to find her room 

filled with sunflowers. 

“I deliver to Atria Hacienda, a retirement home 

in Palm Desert,” said volunteer Judie Stone. “The 

flowers have become such a big part of the residents’ 

lives that Atria initiated a flower-arranging 

class.” 

“I’m frequently stopped for a hug and a kiss on the 

cheek,” said the personable Flower Bank President. 

“Any wonder I’ve gotten carried away and have spent 

$40,000 of my own money to help pay expenses. Out 

of necessity, I’ve started looking for funding.” 

McDonnell found time in October to host the 

Carol Channing Lifetime Achievement Award 

Presentation at the Mirage Inn in Rancho Mirage. 

Channing was lauded for her remarkable 70-year 

career and for her dedication to promoting music 

education in the classroom. 

When in 2003 McDonnell walked into that flower 

shop and his life was forever changed. “The 

Flower Bank became my mission in life,” said Mc- 

Donnell. “The gift of flowers lets someone know 

that someone cares.”

Looking back on the past 11 years and the millions 

of flowers delivered, McDonnell quipped, “I 

think it’s about time some flowers were handed 

to me. I turned 62 this year and now consider 

myself a full-fledged senior citizen.” 

In appreciation of all he’s done, a truckload of 

flowers wouldn’t be enough.

Chef Zac Young was named one of the Top 10 

Pastry Chefs in America in 2015, creator of 

viral dessert sensation, The PieCaken, finalist 

on Bravo’s Top Chef: Just Desserts, and Pastry 

Director of Craveable Hospitality Group. 

Zac is known for his playful takes on American 

desserts, including the all-in-one Thanksgiving 

sweet tooth sensation, the PieCaken. 

After graduating with honors from the Baking 

and Pastry Arts program at the Institute of 

Culinary Education in New York City, he went 

gayly to the top, working under Sebastien 

Rouxel and Richard Capizzi at Thomas Keller’s 

Bouchon Bakery. In 2006, his talents were 

recognized by Alexandra Guarnaschelli, and he 

spent four years working as pastry chef at her 

downtown New York hot spot, Butter Restaurant. 

Always hungry for more, Zac then trained 

in France under renowned Chefs Philippe 

Givre at Valrhona and Philipe Park at Chocolate 

Michel Cluizel. 

After he returned to New York, Zac started a 

Donut Revolution with his dessert program at 

Flex Mussels, also operating two pop-up donut 

stores in Grand Central Station. During that 

time, he was included on the New York Times 

list of the Best Donuts in New York City. 

In 2012, Zac joined the David Burke Group, 

now known as Craveable Hospitality Group: 

a nationwide restaurant group specializing in 

food and beverage management, licensing, 

and consulting. As Pastry Director, he oversees 

the dessert creations of the company’s proprietary 

restaurants and bars, including SaltBrick 

Tavern, David Burke Prime, David Burke at 

Bloomingdale’s, David Burke Kitchen, Aspen 

Kitchen, and JIMMY. Several new full-service

at their Hamptons event, “Chefs and Champagne.”

Animals,” “The Shape of Water”) star in “12 Strong,” a powerful new war drama 

from Alcon Entertainment, Black Label Media and Jerry Bruckheimer Films that 

tells the declassified true story of the first American soldiers sent into Afghanistan 

after 9/11. 

Award-winning director Nicolai Fuglsig directed the film, which is produced by legendary 

producer Jerry Bruckheimer (the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, “Black 

Hawk Down”), together with Molly Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill 

under their Black Label Media banner (“La La Land,” “Sicario”). Oscar winner Ted 

Tally (“The Silence of the Lambs”) and Peter Craig (“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, 

Parts 1 & 2”) wrote the screenplay, based on the acclaimed book Horse 

Soldiers by author Doug Stanton. The executive producers are Oscar nominees

“12 Strong” is set in the harrowing days following 9/11 when an elite U.S. Special

first U.S. soldiers sent into Afghanistan for an extremely dangerous mission in 

response to the attacks. Leaving their families behind, the team is dropped into 

the remote, rugged landscape of northern Afghanistan, where they must convince 

General Rashid Dostum (Navid Negahban) to join forces with them to fight their 

common adversary: the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies.
