CEO MESSAGE
Over the last 12 months the CFSA has had
some tremendous success and faced some
extremely difficult challenges. We stand on the
brink of one of the most exciting and
challenging times in our sport's history.
Last season our athletes had a very successful
campaign with 12 different athletes winning 35
World Cup medals, two World Cup Champions
in Jenn Heil and Steve Omischl and the coveted
Nations Cup.
To ensure continued strength of results we need
a large pool of athletes, quality programs and
officials, facilities, profile, and funding … in short
we need everyone in the organization to be
focused on the delivery of their critical part of
the success puzzle. To this end we are seeing
some great progress.
With passion and hard work, two organizations
within our ranks took the initiative and created
new water ramp training facilities in Grande
Prairie, AB and Lac Beauport, QC. These will
create a legacy of many more future champion
athletes but more importantly demonstrates the
kind of “can do” attitude that we must adopt as
an organization to ensure our future success
towards 2010 and beyond.
Our grassroots program is growing and we
have a passionate, dedicated and active group
of club level volunteers. With a new sponsor for
our entry level program, RBC Financial Group,
we expect this to become the breeding ground
for the next generation of World and Olympic
Champions.
New sponsors have come onboard, and
traditional supporters continue to provide us
with both financial and moral support. In the
last 12 months we have signed two new team
sponsors … RBC Financial Group and Bell
Canada. Our long-time sponsor Canada Post
continues to provide incredible backing.
Spyder, Auclair/Paris Glove, Ericsson and many
others also continue to provide great support.
Over the next six seasons we will have 3 World
Championships, the 2006 Olympic Games in
Torino, and of course the 2010 Olympic Winter
Games in Vancouver. This time will not be
without challenges and ever increasing
competition from many sides. In order to
ensure success we need to rededicate
ourselves to creating the best program in the
World and to expanding our programming and
support to the new World Cup disciplines of
SkiCross and Halfpipe.
Most of all however, we have to focus on the
athletes in our program. They are an incredible
group of young people who represent their
sport, their sponsors, their country, and
themselves with grace and passion. They have
the capacity to win…we need to continue to
give them the tools to do so.
I look forward to working with all of you to
ensure that this keeps happening.
Sincerely,
Peter Judge
CEO, Canadian Freestyle Ski Association
GIVING BACK
In the history of Freestyle skiing, the
Canadian program has been
blessed with exceptional athletes
who have delivered impressive
results throughout almost three
decades. Canadian aerialists have
proven year after year that they are
among the best Freestyle skiers in
the world…but what happens to
these athletes upon retirement from
high performance competition?
Where do they turn their attention
when they hang up their skis?
In recent years, many retired
athletes have remained committed to
the development and promotion of
Freestyle Skiing in Canada.
Involvement runs anywhere from participation at
fundraising events, coaching children, sport
journalism, clothing lines, Freestyle camps, and
volunteering their time and knowledge to events
and organizations at the local, provincial, national
and international levels.
In 2003, after a remarkable career in aerial
skiing, Nicolas Fontaine retired from
competition. This 34 year old aerialist from
Magog, Quebec represented Canada from
1990 to 2003, amassing 36 World Cup medals,
a World Championship title, 4 World Cup titles,
and a silver medal at the 1992 Olympic Winter
Games (demonstration). Upon retiring,
Every now and then,
people go above and beyond…
Jeff Bean, Nico Fontaine, Dmitriy Kavunov
and Steve Omischl celebrate the opening of
the Centre National Yves LaRoche
Fontaine was asked what he would do, now that
his Freestyle career was over.
“For me, I knew I wasn't done yet,” said
Fontaine. He had one more thing to
accomplish, and that was to see the creation of
a world class training facility in Canada.
“Building a water ramp in Quebec became a
dream and a goal of mine in 1996, when I saw the
destruction of Yves' (LaRoche) original ramp.”
Approximately four years ago,
parents and former freestylers came
together after the Quebec
government announced a financial
commitment to a National Training
center in the Quebec area. Fontaine
joined this committed group which
was led at the time by former
Freestyler and television producer
Dominic LaRoche, who was the first
to join a committee that would see to
the creation of a new water ramp in
Lac Beauport, QC.
By the time Fontaine retired from
competition in 2003, there was a well
established group in place, lobbying
federal, provincial, and municipal
governments as well as corporate support to
raise the $1.5 million necessary to build a top
notch training facility that would rival all others.
This group, led by Réal Robichaud (president)
Jean-Sébastien Montminy (General Manager)
and Dominic LaRoche, shared a vision to create
a facility that would allow Canadian athletes to
remain in Canada during the off-season, and
not compromise their training as they prepare
for the following competitive season. Fontaine
was assigned to the technical aspects of the
ramp based on his unprecedented knowledge
of other facilities.
4

“For much of my career, I spent my summers in
Lake Placid, New York, because Canada just
hadn't kept up with the technical improvements
that other water ramps were boasting. I have
been to Lake Placid, Park City, Blackcomb,
Evian, SUI, Austria, and recently helped Ales
Valenta (2002 Olympic Gold medalist) design the
ramp in the Czech Republic. I also helped with
the design of the ramps in Grande Prairie, AB.”
Fontaine finally saw his dream realized this
spring, with the opening of the National
Freestyle Training Centre Yves LaRoche. The
training centre is named after Fontaine's longtime
friend and mentor, Yves LaRoche, who
was one of the best aerialists ever to come out
of Canada. LaRoche suffered a serious
accident paraponting in Europe over fifteen
years ago, resulting in physical disabilities.
“Yves was the founder of first ramps in Lac
Beauport. He was one of the best athletes
ever, and is responsible for bringing the sport to
where we are now. Many athletes have
succeeded due to his facility, his coaching, and
most of all, his inspiration. After his accident he
never gave up, and he showed that
determination once again this summer every
time he came and jumped at the ramp!”
The training centre, located in Lac Beauport,
Quebec, is quickly gaining the reputation as the
“place to be” next summer. Members of the
Canadian Freestyle team who were on hand for
the opening raved about the facility, suggesting
that there is no longer any reason to leave
Canada for water-ramp training.
As for Fontaine, it's highly doubtful that his
involvement and passion for Freestyle skiing
will come to an end any time soon. Like many
who have gone before him, Fontaine continues
to serve as an inspiration for young Freestylers
and a role model for other athletes who may
wonder where to turn their attention when their
competitive days are done!
A new facility in the
West - parents making it
happen in Alberta…
When Grande Prairie's Jim Francis and Bill
McLelland sat one afternoon watching their
kids launch themselves off the Red Deer water
ramp, they asked themselves “how hard can it
be to build a ramp in Grande Prairie?”
Francis laughs about it now, suggesting there
is merit to the old adage, “ignorance is bliss!”
But after hard work, tremendous commitment
and a never-give-up attitude, Grande Prairie
hosted the opening of a new state-of-the-art
development ramp designed to train freestyle
ski and snowboard athletes in aerial and
inverted manoeuvres.
Although it is not big enough to meet highperformance
requirements, it will serve as an
essential component to the development of the
sport. Located at Nitehawk Ski Area in Grande
Prairie, Alberta, the project was partnered with
Nitehawk Ski Area and Northern Extreme
Freestyle who operate the ramp facility. The
ramp was a jointly funded venture by the City
of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie
#1, MD Greenview, the Province of Alberta
and local businesses.
Congratulations go out to the Northern
Extreme Freestyle Club for all of their efforts, to
Nite Hawk for hosting the ramp, to all of those
suppliers and sponsors and most importantly,
to the volunteers who put in so much
dedication to make the dream a reality!
LEXICON ON MOGULS
Single Moguls
Olympic discipline
Speed, turns and air...
Mogul skiing is probably the most accessible of
the Freestyle disciplines and is one of the most
exciting and spectacular of all winter sports.
Everyone who skis has had to negotiate bumps
or moguls at some point and knows how challenging
they can be. The incredible skill, athleticism
and courage of the world's top mogul
skiers makes it look easy, as they race straight
down the fall line at lightning speeds. The top
skiers are covering as many as four moguls per
second!!!!
The Course
Average length is between 200 and 270 metres
with an average steepness of 26 degrees.
Moguls are set approximately 3.5 metres apart.
Course includes two Air bumps which are used
as take-off for jumps/ aerial manoeuvres.
Judging
Competitors rip down the 29-degree (give or
take a degree or two) mogul course and launch
themselves off two jumps on the way down
under scrutiny of a panel of seven judges.
Marks are awarded for the technical quality of
the skier's turns (50%), the two upright aerial
manoeuvres (25%) and speed (25%). While
speed is a factor, the fastest skier across the
finish line does not necessarily win.
Competition Format
Competitions are either:
a) Qualifying round with a single descent,
followed by a final featuring the top 12
from the first round.
b) Best of two runs.
Dual Moguls
World Championship discipline
Head-to-head action...
In Dual Moguls, competitors race head-to-head
in knock-out rounds. The added adrenaline of
racing side-by-side means skiers often push
themselves beyond their limits, resulting in either
spectacular crashes or some of the most awesome
bump skiing you will ever see. Results
from the Dual Moguls competitions on the FIS
World Cup tour are combined with Single Moguls
results to determine the overall World Cup Mogul
Champion at the end of each year.
Judging
As with Single Moguls, a panel of seven judges
award marks for turns, speed and air, deciding
by a show of panels who will go forward to the
next round. Again the fastest skier over the finish
line is not necessarily the winner.
Competition Format
Competitions are either:
a) Single run qualification round (as per single
Moguls) to seed the Duals, which
would usually be sixteen pairs of Duals or;
b) Elimination rounds of the entire field of
competitors based on seeding from
either the results of a prior Dual competition
or a prior Single Moguls competition.
Lingo
• Back scratcher: Skiers scratch their backs
with parallel tails of their skis. Knees bend
under torso (ski tips drop under body), and
hips lean forward with a countermotion of the
shoulders (as if feet are trying to scratch the
back).
• Daffy: Splits — legs are widely spread, one in
front, one behind. Front ski tip up, back ski tip
down, with skis parallel.
• Iron cross: Ski tips cross as skier remains
upright. Tips drop, but heels are kicked to
either side.
6

• Kosak: Combination of spread eagle and
zudnik. See zudnik and spread eagle.
• Spread Eagle/Spread: Starting position for
making snow angels: arms extended and legs
split, usually 90 degrees or more to the side.
• Twister: Skis twist 90 degrees to one side of
the body, while hands and arms may counter
the twisting skis — with core of body
remaining upright and facing down the hill.
• 360: Upright aerial spin of 360 degrees often
called a helicopter or chopper. 720 = Double
helicopter. (when viewed from the side).
• Mute Grab: 360 with an Iron Cross Back
Scratcher in the middle (often referred to as a
“Heli-Mute”).
• Off axis: A true flip is one that turns around
the horizontal (zero degree) axis. A true spin
is one that turns around the vertical (90
degree) one. An off-axis spin or flip is one
that deviates from these norms.
• D Spin: A back flip with an off axis full twist
• Back full: A back flip with a full twist both true
to the "normal" axes
• Lincoln Loop: old school brought into new
school - a sideways flip
• Grab: Any part of the ski or binding that is
grabbed by the hand - there are Tail, Mute,
Japan and Toxic grabs in addition to a whole
mess of others, all which add "flavour" to the
tricks.
• Rodeo: Backwards initiated off-axis flip
• Flat Spin: Another off axis trick where the
skier looks like they are spinning like a
horizontal wheel.
• Mysty: Forward initiated off axis flip
• Corked: This is when a flip and spin are kind
of blended into one. A trick becomes Super
corked when the feet go above the horizontal
plane of the head.
• Switch: Taking off a jump backwards
• Fakie: Landing backwards
Men Mogul Stars
• Janne Lahtela, Finland. 2002 Olympic Champion and
1998 Olympic silver medalist. Winner of the 2004
Overall World Cup mogul title, Lahtela leads a strong
Finnish mogul team that includes Mikko Ronkainnen
(2001 and 2003 World Champion). Winner of five
World Cup events- last season, and on the podium a
total of 9 times in 14 starts, Lahtela continues to
dominate the men's World Cup mogul scene.
• Pierre-Alexandre Rousseau, Canada. Traditionally
ranked among the top-three mogul skiers in the
world, Rousseau finished an uncharacteristic 6th
overall for the 03-04 season. Rousseau completed
the 03-04 world cup tour with back-to-back podium
performances and proved once again that he is
among the world's best. Silver medalist at the
2001 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships.
• Toby Dawson, Jeremy Bloom, Travis Cabral and
Nathan Roberts, USA. Members of a strong US
team that took 2nd through 5th positioning in the
overall world cup mogul standings last season.
Dawson finished 2nd overall behind Lahtela with 3
world cup wins while Bloom, Cabral and Roberts
finished 3rd through 5th respectively and each
captured a world cup win throughout the season.
• Mark-André Moreau, Canada. A rookie on the
Canadian mogul squad, Moreau captured his firstever
world cup win in Mt. Tremblant, Quebec last
season to join the ranks of Canadian mogul
legends like Jean-Luc Brassard, Stéphane Rochon,
and PA Rousseau. Moreau finished an impressive
10th overall in his first season on the world cup tour.
Women Mogul Stars
• Jennifer Heil, Canada. 2004 World Cup overall
women's mogul champion. Heil made history last
season by becoming the first Canadian woman ever
to capture a world cup mogul title. Heil was on the
podium 9 of 14 events, including 3 World Cup wins.
2001 World Cup Rookie of the Year. Placed 4th at
the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, missing the
podium by 1 one-hundredth of a point.
• Kari Traa, Norway. 2002 Olympic Champion, 2003
FIS World Freestyle Ski Champion, and ranked #1
in the world from 2000-2003. Traa finished 2nd
last season behind Heil, but still managed a total of
5 world cup wins and 7 podium performances.
Known for her aggressive style of skiing and her
impressive upright triple maneuvers in the mogul
course, Traa has been credited as the competitor
who has pushed women's moguls to the next level.
• Hannah Kearney & Shannon Bahrke, USA.
Kearney was the top US female mogul skier last
season, finishing 4th overall and capturing 2 world
cup wins late in the season. Bahrke was the silver
medalist at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games, and
remains one of the top competitors in women's
moguls, finishing 5th overall last season.
• Stéphanie St. Pierre, Canada. Bronze medalist at
the 2003 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships,
marking the first Canadian women's World
Championship single mogul medal since Bronwen
Thomas in 1993. Was off to an impressive start
last season with a World Cup win in Mt. Tremblant,
Quebec as well as 2 bronze medal performances.
St-Pierre did not finish the season due to a
recurring knee injury, resulting in an 8th place
ranking for the 03-04 season.
• Margarita Marbler, Austria. Claimed the 2003 World
Cup dual mogul title, and placed 3rd in the World
Cup single mogul standings for the last two
consecutive seasons. Marbler's season included 2
world cup wins, and 8 podium performances.
LEXICON ON AERIALS
Aerials
Olympic discipline
Aerials is not for the faint of heart. At the
National Team level, competitors hit the jumps
or 'kickers' at speeds of 60+ km/h, launch themselves
some 20 metres in the air and perform
up to triple back somersaults with up to five
twists, landing on a steep landing hill most people
would be nervous just skiing down. These
are the most difficult manoeuvres performed in
any 'gymnastic' sport.
Judging
Competitors must perform two different jumps
consisting of single or multiple somersaults with
or without twists. Each jump must vary by one
somersault or one twist. Points are awarded for
take-off (20% of score), form in the air (50% of
score) and landing (30% of score). Scores of
both jumps are added together for a final mark.
Competition Format
Competitions are either:
a) A two jump qualification round with a two
jump 12-person final the next day or
b) A one jump qualification round with a one
jump final for the top 12 men and women or
c) (at the lower levels) each competitor gets
two jumps. Results in either format are combined
score of the competitor's two jumps.
Examples of jumps
Singles
• Back Layout (DD — 2.05, bL): Single flip
in straight body position.
• (Back) Full (DD — 2.30, bF): Single flip
with full twist should be done in the layout
position.
• Double Full (DD — 2.70, bdF): Single flip
with two twists (used to be worth 2.65).
Doubles
• Back Lay-Tuck (DD — 2.60, bLT): Double
THE NEXT WAVE
Canadian up-and-comers: The
next wave is talented, hungry,
and setting their sights on
Vancouver 2010!
In less than six years, Canada will host the
world at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in
Vancouver, BC. Currently, Canada's World cup
team is focussed on the 2005 FIS World
Freestyle Ski Championships and the 2006
Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Canada's Freestyle Ski team is young,
motivated and successful, but there will no
doubt be great pressure from below as we
move toward Vancouver 2010.
Among current Canadian greats like Steve
Omischl, Jennifer Heil and PA Rousseau, there
is also a motivated group of youngsters coming
through the Canadian Freestyle system who are
eager to be alongside their veteran team-mates
come 2010.
.
The next wave - Moguls
Michael Henitiuk
Age: 15
Residence: Calgary, AB
At the age of just 13, Michael qualified for the
Canadian Senior Freestyle ski championships.
At 15, Michael remains with the Alberta Ski
team this season. He is described by the
Freestyle coaching community as a “hot hot”
skier, who loves mogul skiing and will definitely
be a contender in 2010.
The next wave - Moguls
Alexandre Bilodeau
Age: 17
Residence: Rosemère, QC
A talented athlete who since the age of 14 has
been offered positions with both the aerial and
mogul development teams, Alex elected to
remain within the provincial system to secure a
solid education. In 2003, he was the only
athlete to compete in both moguls and aerials at
the Canadian Senior Championships. At 17,
Alexandre joins the Canadian mogul
development team. With his strong aerials
background, head D-team coach Michel
Hamelin ranks him among the top jumpers (in
moguls) on the World Cup circuit.
10

The next wave - Moguls
Audrey Robichaud
Age: 16
Residence: Val Belair, QC
At 15 years of age, Audrey captured the 2004
Canadian dual-moguls championships in Mt.
Gabriel, Quebec last spring. Audrey began
skiing at age 7 with the Club École Ski
Acrobatique in Lac Beauport, Quebec, and has
been water ramping ever since. With her strong
jumping technique, her natural talent, and her
determination, Canadian team coaches believe
she will be one of the women to watch in the
bumps as we approach 2010.
The next wave - Moguls
Guillaume Turgeon
Age 17
Residence: Lac Beauport, QC
New to the Canadian Development team, at 17
Guillaume laid down a gold medal performance
last spring to capture the 2004 Canadian dualmoguls
title. Compared to mogul greats like
Jean-Luc Brassard and Pierre-Alexandre
Rousseau, head D-team coach Michel Hamelin
calls Guillaume “a natural.”
Guillaume Turgeon at the Bell Canada 2004
Canadian Championships
The next wave - Aerials
New Initiatives
In July of this year, the CFSA partnered with
gymnastics BC to recruit retired gymnasts into
the world of Aerials! Four young athletes were
introduced to aerials on skis, and all four appear
to have caught the bug! Having traveled to
Whistler and experienced the thrill of water
ramping, they are eager to pursue their
newfound sport with mileage on snow this
winter. Athletes involved included 14 year-old
Alysia Simons from Richmond BC, Megan
Drown (15) and Rebecca Graham (18) from
Abbotsford, BC, and Brittany Hawkins (15) from
Delta BC.
Meanwhile, in Eastern Canada, young athletes
participated in the aerial program at Lac
Beauport's newest water ramp. Tyler(10) and
Travis(13) Gerrits from Toronto, ON, worked
with aerials legend Nicolas Fontaine for 5
weeks last summer, and Fontaine referred to
their development as “very impressive.”
Included in this group of up-and-comers is
Fontaine's 10 year old niece, Camille Lacasse,
from Magog, QC.
Jeff Bean
Date of birth: January 11, 1977
Age (as of Oct. 1, 2004): 27
Place of birth: Ottawa, ON
Residence: Ottawa, ON
• Ninth year as a World Cup team member.
• Suffered a fractured vertebrae (C7) in training at the opening World Cup of the season this September in Buller, Australia, and as a result did not compete, but expects
to be ready for competition in December.
• After years of being ranked among the World's best, Bean placed a disappointing 17th on the 2003-2004 World Cup tour. “I learned a lot about myself last season, and am
now feeling more prepared than ever. Sometimes it takes a “kick in the butt” to get things going!”
• Highlight from last season: “What the season taught me!”
• Captured the Canadian Championship title in March at Mt. Gabriel, Quebec.
• Placed a controversial 4th at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, after performing two of the best jumps of his career. “As a competitor, the Olympics
could not have gone any better. I peaked at the right moment and did the two best jumps I had in me at the time. On a personal note, placing 4th hurt.”
• Has been training in Lake Placid all summer but looks forward to preparing for the Olympics in Lac Beauport next summer.
• Focus for the summer was on learning a new trick, Full-Triple full-Full (a quintuple twisting triple back flip) “So far so good. I'm ahead of where I had planned to be in
my training. I won't compete it this season on snow, but will do a few to break the ice. In doing that, it reduces the difficulty in my head of all my other jumps.”
• Missed most of the 99-00 World Cup tour after breaking his femur early in the season at the World Cup in Blackcomb. Bean underwent surgery in the summer of 2000,
and discovered that he actually had a class four divot in his femur. Three days after surgery, Jeff was mountain biking.
• Considers his attitude to be one of his greatest strengths. “I never get too high, or too low. This makes my training very consistent.”
• Goal for the season: “Simple! Work as hard as I can and prepare for the 2006 Olympics. I know that if I do all I can… the results will come.
• Is married to long-time girlfriend Lindsay Mullaly from Ottawa. “She is my role model. She has taught me so much about myself as a person, and was an integral part
of my success at the Olympics in 2002.”
• Is taking university courses working towards an arts degree with a major in law.
• Enjoys mountain biking and trampoline, and is completely bilingual.
• Fourth season as a World Cup team member.
• Broke his fibula (www.airblais.com/images/gallery/xray) at the Fernie World Cup event just prior to
the 2003 World Championships. A plate and six screws were put in to stabilize the bone and promote
a quick recovery. Blais missed the rest of the winter season.
• Captured 2 bronze medals, (Lake Placid & Fernie) prior to sustaining a knee injury that sidelined him
for the remainder of the 03-04 season. “I tore my ACL and Meniscus while competing at the world
cup in China. I flew back to Canada and was in surgery to repair it 2 weeks later.”
• Blais underwent surgery, and returned home to Grande Prairie for rehab before heading to Lake
Placid for summer training
• Goal for the season: “To fully recover and get up to my old form prior to my knee injury. I'm hoping to
only have to miss the Australian world cup in September and then hopefully be ready to compete
starting in December. This year will be important for everyone as it's the start of the Olympic qualifying
Jim Schiman
Date of birth: October 1, 1974
Age (as of Oct. 1, 2004): 30
Place of birth: Kelowna, BC
Residence: Cranbrook, BC
• Fifth year as a World Cup team member.
• Returned to competition last season after suffering a serious knee (right) injury requiring
surgery in 2002. Schiman achieved his goal last season of skiing as well as he did prior to his
injury, in fact he was en route to his most successful season ever, capturing a World Cup win
in Fernie BC, and placing second in Inawashiro, Japan, before he sustained yet another injury
to his left knee in training while preparing for a World Cup in Airolo, SUI in February 04.
• Schiman tore his patella tendon and acl, undergoing two surgeries this spring; March 8th to
repair the tendon, and a second surgery May 13th to remove a wire that was put in to protect
the tendon. He is now rehabbing in Whistler at Whistler Physio and looks forward to getting
back to 100%. “The unfortunate thing for me is the timing of the injury. As a result, I'll be out
for the entire 2004/05 season, so no World Championships yet again.”
• Known for his aggressive “on the edge” style of skiing, which often results in either a great
result, or a spectacular crash!
• Is setting his sight on 2006: I'm going to spend this winter getting ready for the Olympic season.
It leaves it pretty tight to qualify but I'll be healthy at least.
• Believes his strengths are that he is technically sound with a positive outlook.
• Interested in golf, building furniture, and environmentally sound buildings.
• Future career plans? “PGA Champions tour!”
