The bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona was 

actually built in the 1830s and formerly spanned the 

River Thames in London, England. It was dismantled 

in 1967 and relocated to Arizona. Lake Havasu.

of slain civil rights leader Dr. 

Martin Luther King, Jr. at a special 

Celebration of Life on Sunday, Jan. 

14. The 2 p.m. celebration will be 

held at Church of St. Paul in the 

Desert, 125 W. El Alameda. Keynote speakers will include 

world champion boxer and local resident Timothy Bradley, 

Jr., Palm Springs resident, football legend and actor Fred 

“The Hammer” Williamson along with Reverend Keyphyan 

Sheppard and Zjarvre Crawford, President of the 

Palm Springs High School Associated Student Body. Local 

singing artist Keisha D will also perform. A special exhibit 

featuring the student art, presented by the Palm Springs 

Public Arts Commission, will run Jan. 16 – Feb. 28 at the 

Palm Springs Public Library, 300 S. Sunrise Way.

CALIFORNIA DESERT CHORALE 

TO PRESENT 

17th ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP 

COMPETITION 

Palm Desert, CA - January 9, 2018... The 

California Desert Chorale (CDC) will present 

their 17th Annual Scholarship Competition 

for local high school seniors and 

community college students who will perform 

and compete for scholarships on Sunday, 

January 21. The afternoon will include 

a Master Class from 1:00-3:00p.m. followed 

by a recital from 3:00-4:00p.m led by Artistic 

Director, Tim Bruneau. This exhilarating 

afternoon of competition is open to 

the public, free of charge and will be held 

at Taylor Hall, Palm Desert Community 

Presbyterian Church, 47-321 Highway 74 

in Palm Desert. Donations at any level are 

gratefully accepted. 

“We set rigorous demands for the competing 

singers as the scholarship competition 

is designed to attract only serious and committed 

young singers,” said Tim Bruneau, 

CDC Artistic Director. 

Established in 2002 to offer both quality 

educational experience and monetary 

scholarships to local high school seniors 

and community college students who 

demonstrate exceptional vocal ability, the 

California Desert Chorale Scholarship program 

has assisted eighteen young singers 

continue their vocal and choral study at the 

collegiate level. 

The Gordon Wolf Memorial Scholarship 

was established in 2013 honoring beloved 

Chorale singer and board member, Gordon 

Wolf - a tireless volunteer who set a spectacular 

example in the community through 

his love of vocal music and boundless energy 

in support of CDC. 

Over the past 16 years, the California Desert 

Chorale has distributed over $17,500 

through the scholarship competition. Many 

of the past winners have gone on to prestigious 

colleges and to careers as professional 

singers and choral directors while several 

have maintained their liaison to California 

Desert Chorale by becoming active members 

with the ensemble. 

“I am proud that 25 years after the California 

Desert Chorale was formed, our 

organization is still going strong and we 

now have over 70 members on our roster. 

Our scholarship competition helps us build

2. Jeff Session, Attorney General, refusing 

to acknowledge that the Human 

Rights Act of 1964 includes protection 

of LBGT people. 

3. Trump issuing order to ban 

trans-gender people from the military. 

4. Trump campaign choosing Mike 

Pence as Vice President, when as governor 

of Indiana instituted numerous 

anti-gay actions including the misguided 

Religious Restoration Freedom Act 

in 2015 

5. Revocing of trans-gender student 

rights, etc. etc. 

Artists have illustrated protests against 

tyranny for centuries. This article includes 

samples of some representing the 

current RESIST movement.

– Over Presidents’ Day Weekend, Art 

Palm Springs will present nearly 80 galleries 

from Asia, North and South America, 

and Europe, that represent more 

than 300 artists, and brings a world of art 

to the Palm Springs Convention Center. 

Since its inception in 2012, the increasingly 

popular fair has more than doubled 

the number of attending galleries from 

just over 30 in its first year to more than 

60 in 2017. The show draws thousands of 

art collectors and patrons each year from 

around the globe. 

Because of popular demand by its expanding 

audience and galleries, Urban Expositions 

has recently announced the addition 

of Presidents’ Day to the show’s schedule. 

“The growth of the fair’s popularity has 

made the addition of Monday an easy decision

the 2018 fair has confirmed larger gallery 

participation than the debut event in 2012 

and is expected to surpass last year’s participation. 

Since its early editions, Art Palm Springs 

has been a draw for curators, collectors, 

designers and celebrities that include 

Cheech Marin, Jodie Foster, Alexa Davalos, 

Udo Kier, Shelby Lynne, Rain Phoenix, 

and award-winning designers Christopher 

Kennedy, Dann Foley and Erin Valencich. 

With its pristine deserts and grand mountain 

views, Palm Springs has been an arts 

haven for decades. Artists such as from 

Agnes Pelton, Maynard Dixon and Sir 

Winston Churchill to Dale Chihuly have 

all found inspiration in the desert city. 

The city’s fine art profile began in 1938 

with founding of the Palm Springs Desert 

Museum, that encompassed desert arts 

and environment, that changed its name 

and focus to fine arts in 2005 to the Palm 

Springs Art Museum. 

In 2012, Art Palm Springs premiered, 

growing with record attendance each year. 

In 2017, Palm Springs drew international 

attention with the debut of Desert X, a 

biennial exhibit featuring 16 artists. As a 

program sponsor, Art Palm Springs 2017 

Artist of the Year, Lita Albuquerque, local 

artist Phillip K. Smith and others were 

included in the exhibition that drew international 

audiences.

Well, the New Year came and the President 

did what only he seems capable of doing – 

irritating the entire world in just a few characters. 

He attacked Pakistan, the Palestinian 

Organization, Europe, Great Britain and others 

too numerous to mention. He ended the 

week telling the world that his “button” was 

bigger than the “button the leader of North 

Korea! The man is crude personified. 

Now he was able to give his rich friends their 

holiday present of massive tax cuts while 

putting coal into all of our stockings. All 

the while the debate was going on, Trump 

and his Congressional buddies promised that 

with all the extra revenue to corporations 

it would cause such a burst of economic 

activity to erase the projected 1.5 TRILLION 

debt the tax bill cost. OOOOPS – either they 

can’t add in Washington or just lie very well 

because just the week after the tax cut bill, 

they announced that with such deficits they 

must make significant cuts – and to what you 

may ask? SOCIAL SECURITY, MEDICARE 

and other programs from the poor. Shameful. 

Then there was the bill to assist relief efforts 

in Houston, Florida, Puerto Rico and California. 

I think you already know that the two 

Red states were funded while the Blue states 

and Commonwealth were not. 

– over 200,000 Salvadorans who have lived 

and worked in the US for two decades will be 

forcibly removed and returned to El Salvador. 

Most of those people, as you can imagine, 

were political exiles and a future in El Salvador 

looks very bleak. 

And while we focus on his instability (and 

yes, make no mistake) HE IS INSTABLE, he 

quietly with his cabinet members are in the 

process of closing programs, leaving very 

important positions vacant and packing the 

courts with young, very conservative people. 

One of the positions left vacant, as an example 

is the ambassador to Germany – without 

question, the leader of Europe and we have 

no one there to convey the positions of the 

United States or advocate for our policies. 

It will be one full year since the inauguration 

of Trump in just 12 days from the day I am 

writing this. We are beginning to see some 

glimmer of hope that the curtain shielding 

the Wizard is being to fall away. The new 

book by Michael Wolf, Fire and Fury, if full 

of quotes of the Trump inner circle who are 

now beginning to call into questions his mental 

capacity, intellectual curiosity, and to call 

actions taken by the President and his family 

as treasonous. 

Along with the Mueller investigation the 

Trump is continuing his war on immigrants. 

next 90-120 days will be crucial. Stay tuned. 

He seems willing to shut down the government 

over renewal of DACA. He now says
