Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team MO G U L S World Championships 2003 Deer Valley 8 Kristi Richards Date of birth: October 27, 1981 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 24 Place of birth: Penticton, BC Residence: Summerland, BC • Fourth year as a World Cup team member. • Gold medallist at the 2003 Canadian National Championships in single moguls where she stunned the crowd by performing a 720 in her run, and still managed to ski the fastest time. • Injured her left knee in the summer of 2003 while training at Blackcomb. Suffered a tear in her ACL and underwent surgery on July 25th 2003 with Dr. J.P. McKonkey. • Richards did not compete in the 2003-2004 World Cup season in order to focus on rehab and avoid the risk of re-injuring her knee. • Suffered a spleen injury in training in February 2005 in Japan, which she considers the greatest hurdle of her career to date. “It was my first year back following my knee injury, and it caused me to miss the rest of the World Cup competitions for the season, including World Championships. Now I have to work extra hard to get the results to qualify for the 2006 Olympics. I know I can do it, but there’s no room for error.” • Finished 8th on the 2002-2003 World Cup tour. • Long term sport goals: The podium at the Olympics, and to be known as a pioneer and an inspiration to other athletes. • Two-time recipient of the BC Premiers award. • Has been competing in Freestyle skiing since she was 12 years old. • Believes her mental toughness is one of her strengths as a competitor. “I have a drive to succeed that’s stronger than the rest of the field… whatever they’re doing to prepare themselves, I will be doing more!” • Considers herself a small-town girl with big aspirations. • Describes her perfect state of happiness as when she is in the start gate. “I feel so peaceful.
