Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team MO G U L S World Championships 2005 Ruka 8 Ruka (DM) 6 2003 Deer Valley 17 2001 Blackcomb (DM) 5 1999 Meiringen 10 Sylvia Kerfoot Date of birth: June 2, 1977 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 28 Place of birth: Vancouver, BC Residence: Whistler, BC • Ranked 16th last season on the World Cup tour. • Trained in Lac Beauport, QC this summer. • Focused on learning new tricks this summer and fall by training “back full/D-spin” on the water ramp. Is currently doing front tuck. • Goal for the season: To represent Canada and win a medal in Torino at the Olympic Winter Games. • A former gymnast who started skiing moguls while still competing in gymnastics. “My first year on the National Development team was my last year competing provincial level gymnastics. • Values relationships with friends and family. “My relationships outside of sport are one of the most important things in my life. I work really hard to stay in touch while I am away training and competing. • Considers her mother the most influential person in her life. “She is an amazing business woman, mother and friend. Her support in my career is more than I could ever ask for. I would not be where I am in this sport without her. • Views Lance Armstrong as her hero. “His comeback from cancer, his drive determination and passion for cycling is an inspiration to me. Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team MO G U L S World Championships 2005 Ruka 18 Ruka (DM) 9 2003 Deer Valley 6 Deer Valley (DM) 9 Elisa Kurylowicz Date of birth: May 12, 1981 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 24 Place of birth: Ottawa, ON Residence: Manotick, ON • Fourth year as World Cup team member. • Captured her first-ever World Cup win in 2004 in a World Cup dual-mogul event in Fernie, BC. ”My win in Fernie was very cool! I definitely got a taste of my dream, and it got me hungry to reach my goals. I also really enjoyed Tremblant because my family and friends got to come out and watch. It’s always great to have your home town supporters with you.” • First person in the world to compete a back full manoeuvre in competition last season. • Believes part of her success is due to the strength of her team-mates: “My team is great and we all depend on each other to get through tough times. We are so positive together and I think that’s the reason the Canadian women’s mogul team is so strong!” • Goal for the season: My main goal is to medal at the Olympics, and win as many World Cup medals as possible. I also would like to up the level of difficulty in my jumps. • Considers her mother the most influential person in her life: “She has taught me so many life lessons. With or without skiing, she is always there for me and is never judgemental. She has been through so much in her life, and her strong will and guts are inspiring.” • Heroes include Tiger Woods, Andy Roddick and Britney Spears • Has competed in Freestyle for eight years. “When I joined, I had no idea what Freestyle was about, but I quickly learned to love the sport. After watching Jean-Luc Brassard and Stephane Rochon rule men’s moguls, I decided that I wanted to make my dent in women’s moguls. Those two guys inspired me to stay in the sport.” • Plans to work on getting kids involved in athletics: “Once my focus is off the Olympics, that will become my new project.” • Credits her Development team coach Julie Steggall (former Canadian World Cup mogul skier) as the one who helped her realize her potential as an athlete. “She helped me become mentally tough and her words will always stay in my heart.” • Enjoys mountain biking, swimming, and reading. “I am always excited to go to Whistler because there are some really great trails there. I am also a giant book worm. Reading a good book can make my week!!” • Superstitions?
