Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team A E R I A L S Olympic Games 2002 Salt Lake 3 World Championships 2005 Ruka 17 2003 Deer Valley 3 2001 Blackcomb 3 Deidra Dionne Date of birth: February 5, 1982 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005: 23 Place of birth: North Battleford, SK Raised in: Red Deer, AB Residence: Lac Beauport, QC • Bronze medallist at the 2003 and 2001 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships. • Bronze medallist at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, which she considers her greatest accomplishment to date. • Won a bronze medal in 1999 at her first-ever World Cup in Blackcomb, BC, and followed up with a silver medal the following weekend in Deer Valley. These results earned Deidra the World Cup female Rookie of the year for 1999-2000. • Suffered a neck injury this September in Buller Australia, and underwent surgery to stabilize her cervical spine. Dionne suffered no permanent damage, and is eager to getting back to competition form. • Sixth year as a World Cup team member. • Goal for the season: “To win the Olympics.” • Long term goal: “I would like to establish myself as one of the sport’s greats.” • Sees her competitiveness as her greatest strength. • Believes that part of her success is owed to being part of such a strong team. “It’s great to know that you are part of such a special team. Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team MO G U L S Olympic Games 2002 Salt Lake 4 World Championships 2005 Ruka (DM) 1 Ruka 5 2001 Blackcomb 7 Jenn Heil Date of birth: April 11, 1983 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 22 Place of birth: Edmonton, AB Home town: Spruce Grove, AB Resides & trains in: Montreal, QC • Winner of the 2004 and 2005 World Cup overall women’s mogul title, making history as the first-ever Canadian woman to claim such a title. • 2005 FIS World Champion in dual moguls. • Took a year away from competition in 2003 to focus on rehab and strengthening. Heil came back stronger and better than ever. She dominated the women’s mogul tour in 2004 and 2005. • Sixth year as World Cup team member. • Member of the 2002 Canadian Olympic mogul team. Heil narrowly missed a place on the Olympic podium, placing fourth by 1/100th of a point at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City. • Learned to ski at an early age. “My dad taught my sister and me how to ski at the age of 2. I knew how to ski moguls before there was a sport of mogul skiing. We are a family of ski fanatics!” • Exploded onto the scene at the age of 16 as a member of the Canadian Development team, capturing the 2000 National title in both single and dual moguls, at Mont-Gabriel, QC. • Resides in Quebec during the off-season. “It has provided me with great opportunities to further my fitness, train on the new water ramp facility in Québec and to attend McGill University.” • Heil continues to work towards her Bachelor of Commerce degree at McGill University. • Views Marnie McBean and Lance Armstrong as heroes. “Marnie is one of Canada’s most successful Olympians. I had the pleasure to hear her speak, and her commitment and dedication to excellence is unsurpassed. Lance Armstrong is determined and fearless and an inspiration to many.” • Most memorable Olympic memory. “Jean-Luc winning gold in 1994! Short skis, short poles, but BIG AIR.
