Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team A E R I A L S Olympic Games 2002 Salt Lake 10 World Championships 2005 Ruka 11 2003 Deer Valley 2 2001 Blackcomb 1 Veronika Bauer Date of birth: Oct. 17, 1980 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 25 Place of birth: North York, ON Residence: Toronto, ON • Silver medallist at the 2003 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships. • Gold medallist at the 2001 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships. • Ranked 8th for the 2004-2005 World Cup season. • Member of the 2002 Canadian Olympic team. • Trained in Park City, Utah throughout the summer. • Goal is to win a medal in Torino. • In 1998 while still a member of the aerials development program, Veronika managed four top-eight results in World Cup competition. • Placed sixth at the 1999 World Championships in Meiringen, Switzerland despite breaking her hand in training earlier that week. • Got involved in Freestyle because of her background in competitive gymnastics and trampoline. Veronika was 1994 Ontario Trampoline Champion. “I could already do most of the tricks on the trampoline, I just needed to learn how to do them with skis on… which wasn’t as easy as I expected.” • Despite being a winter athlete, Veronika tries to avoid winter as much as possible. “If I had it my way, I’d be on a beach somewhere!” • Nickname: Little Vee. • Eighth year as a World Cup team member. Athlete Biographies - Canadian Freestyle Ski Team A E R I A L S Olympic Games 2002 Salt Lake 4 1998 Nagano 11 World Championships 2005 Ruka 2 2001 Blackcomb 8 1999 Meiringen 11 Jeff Bean Date of birth: January 11, 1977 Age (as of Oct. 1, 2005): 28 Place of birth: Ottawa, ON Residence: Ottawa, ON • Tenth year as a World Cup team member. • Silver medallist at the 2005 FIS World Freestyle Ski Championships. • Suffered a fractured vertebrae (C7) in training at the opening World Cup of the 2004-05 season in Buller, Australia. “I broke C1, C7, my nose and the orbital bone in my face on Sept 4th and was 2nd at Worlds 196 days later. The injury did nothing but motivate me to work harder so it never happens again.” • Goal for the season: “To win the big one! In order to win the Olympics, I’ll have to do F-3F-F (a quintuple twisting triple back flip with 3 twists in the second flip.” • Placed a controversial 4th at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, after performing two of the best jumps of his career. “As a competitor, the Olympics could not have gone any better. I peaked at the right moment and did the two best jumps I had in me at the time. On a personal note, placing 4th hurt.” • Believes that his team is what pushes him to be a strong competitor. “Being part of such a strong team makes for the best training environment possible. Seeing people jump well and work hard all around you can do nothing but help to motivate you, and it does. World Championships is an example of where we all fed off of each others performances leading to 4 great results.” • Considers his attitude to be one of his greatest strengths. “I never get too high, or too low. This makes my training very consistent.” • Is married to long-time girlfriend Lindsay Mullaly from Ottawa, whom he considers the most influential person in his life “She is my role model. She has taught me so much about myself as a person, and was an integral part of my success at the Olympics in 2002. She is the person I go to for all my advice.” • Considers competing for Canada the best job in the world. “I have been able to travel the world skiing and make a living doing it for the last 12 years, how can it get any better? I am able to see the big picture and how lucky I really am to be doing this.” • Is taking university courses working towards an arts degree with a major in law. • Enjoys mountain biking and trampoline, and is completely bilingual.
