WHAT AN INCREDIBLY EXCITING YEAR
IT’S BEEN FOR CANADA, THE CANADIAN
FREESTYLE SKI ASSOCIATION (CFSA)
AND CANADA POST.
In February, Canadians were treated to the
experience of a lifetime when the Canadian fl ag
was hoisted above the Olympic podium after Alex
Bilodeau’s gold-medal-winning moguls performance
at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. His
win marked the fi rst time a Canadian athlete won
Olympic gold at home, but others soon followed.
The Canadian team went on to fi nish fi rst overall
in gold-medal wins, with 14, and became the fi rst
host nation, since Norway in 1952, to lead the goldmedal
count. Canada’s athletes performed to the
highest levels and we congratulate all of them as
well as the incredible support teams behind them.
Bilodeau’s historic gold-medal win was a moment of
pride that will live on for years to come. At Canada
Post, we were proud to commemorate his victory,
which was made even sweeter because he was a
member of the Canada Post Freestyle Team, by
issuing a special stamp featuring his gold medal.
This was the fi rst time we had commemorated an
event on the day it occurred.
As title sponsor, we are passionate supporters of the
Canada Post Freestyle Team and we are proud to
support them every step of the way with funding
for major events, junior development camps,
training, equipment and coaching. And, our sixyear
agreement with the Canadian Freestyle Skiing
Association, which started in 2006, will continue to
provide essential funding for the training activities
and competitive commitments of more than 2,000
freestyle skiers in Canada.
At Canada Post, we support numerous charities and
charitable organizations across Canada including
many associated with literacy and our cause of
choice, mental health. We are proud to work for the
benefi t of Canadian communities and contribute
to their quality of life. We know that strong and
thriving communities benefi t all Canadians and
Canadian companies, including Canada Post.
On the shoulders of many fl y the dreams of a few.
Never was this more evident than this past winter
during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.
In the face of signifi cant snow challenges, an army
of volunteers transformed an almost snowless venue
into a sparkling winter wonderland. Their herculean
efforts made Canada proud long before our athletes
took the stage to do the same.
As we close the book on Vancouver and on 2010,
one thing is sure. In both victory and defeat, our
team made us proud. It made Canada proud. Our
athletes’ dedication and hard work have provided
a foundation of inspiration for the next generation.
From the start to the end, it is clear that a key to
our collective success is, was, and will continue be
a signifi cant collaborative effort.
Success is a clarity of vision and a complete
commitment to excellence, not just on the day, but
every day. Not just by one, but by all. Canada Post,
Own the Podium, Bell, RBC, Columbia Sportswear
and the Government of Canada, along with
Message from CFSA
numerous other supporters and suppliers, provided
us with the resources we required to create a winning
environment. At the same time, our parents, Board,
offi cials, coaches, staff, volunteers and, of course,
our athletes at all levels, were clearly the shoulders
carrying the dream.
Nelson Mandela once said of South Africa in
its quest to emerge, “This country is hungry for
greatness.” This statement certainly applied to
Canada on the eve of the Games. Alex Bilodeau lit
the fi re, and thirteen more fuelled it. There is no
doubt now that Canadian Freestyle athletes, along
with their counterparts from other winter sports,
ignited the red mitten-wearing, fl ag-waving throngs
and ushered in a new era of patriotism and national
pride in Canadian sport and history.
At the beginning of a new quadrennial, we
celebrate our Olympic successes, including eight
top-ten fi nishes, an amazing second Olympic medal
for Jenn Heil and Canada’s historic fi rst Olympic
victory on home soil by Alex Bilodeau. But we are
also saddened to see the departure of some of
our best. Athletes like Maxime Gingras, Vincent
Marquis, Kyle Nissen, and Steve Omischl have
been signifi cant contributors to the legend that is
the Canadian Freestyle Team. Their legacies will
live on in the next generation of champions.
Our sights are now set on this season’s Canada
Post Grand Prix events in Calgary and at Ski Mont
Gabriel; the FIS Freestyle World Championships
in Deer Valley, UT; and towards the 2014 Winter
Olympic Games in Sochi. At the time of this
printing, we are also looking forward to the strong
possibility that Halfpipe skiing will be included
into the 2014 Games and are developing a strategy
for the future inclusion of Slopestyle. The FIS has
supported these outcomes and we are anxiously
awaiting the International Olympic Committee’s
ruling on this issues.
However, high performance is only one aspect of
our programming, and it’s an aspect that relies on a
strong grassroots program. With our new long-term
athlete development model, CAN Freestyle, and
its programs we are positioned to capitalize on the
post-Olympic profi le of our sport with an athletic
pathway designed to ensure the development of
freestyle skiers of all ages and in all disciplines.
Thus, our provincial partners are prepared to harness
and develop the next generation of champions.
From the last quadrennial to the beginning of this
new era, it is clear that a key to our collective
success is, was, and will continue to be a signifi cant
collaborative effort.
WHEN ONE DREAM IS ACHIEVED,
MANY MORE ARE BORN.
DID YOU KNOW?
That the Canadian Freestyle Ski Team … “the
Canadian Air Force” … has won more than 100
World Cup medals over the past four years?
And more than 1,200 since the inception of
the FIS World Cup in 1981.
THAT ALEX BILODEAU WAS
THE FIRST CANADIAN TO WIN
World Champion in dual moguls.
That Canadian Freestyle athletes have won
12 Olympic medals in Aerials and Moguls
since these disciplines were introduced to the
Games as a demonstration sport in Calgary in
1988. Canadian medallists include aerialists:
Jean-Marc Rozon, Lloyd Langlois, Phil Laroche,
Nicolas Fontaine, Deidra Dionne and Veronica
Brenner. Mogul medallists include: Jean-Luc
Brassard, Jenn Heil and Alex Bilodeau.
January 28 & 29. Did You Know?
THAT FREESTYLE AERIALISTS DO
THE MOST DIFFICULT GYMNASTIC
MANOEUVRES IN ANY SPORT – UP
TO FIVE TWISTS AND THREE FLIPS.
THEY TRAVEL UP TO 65 KM/H AND
FLY UP TO 20 METRES IN THE AIR
(THAT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF A SIX
STORY BUILDING!).
That Freestyle mogul skiers cover a 230 metre
courses in about 25 seconds, about three
moguls a second, at about a 28-degree incline,
and do two aerial tricks in their run.
That the world’s best-known Freestyle Halfpipe
skier is Canada’s own X-Game-winning Sarah
Burke.
That more than 25 countries have freestyle
FIS World Cup ski events held in China.
That Deer Valley, Utah (the #1 ranked ski
resort in the USA) will host the FIS World
Championships in 2011? Canada hosted
the FIS World Championships at Whistler
Blackcomb in 2001.
SINGLE MOGULS
OLYMPIC DISCIPLINE
Speed, turns and air ... negotiate bumps, or moguls, at some three moguls
per second. Everyone who skis has had to negotiate bumps or moguls at some
point and knows how challenging they can be. The incredible skill, athleticism
and courage of the world’s top mogul skiers makes it look easy, as they race
straight down the fall line at lightning speeds.
THE COURSE
Length is between 200 and 270 metres with an average grade of 26 degrees.
Moguls are set approximately 3.5 metres apart. The course includes two small
jumps which are used as a takeoff for aerials.
JUDGING
Competitors rip down the mogul course and launch themselves off two jumps
on the way down under the scrutiny of a panel of seven judges. Marks are
awarded for the technical quality of the skier’s turns (50%), the two aerial
manoeuvres (25%) and speed (25%). While speed is a factor, the fastest skier
across the fi nish line does not necessarily win.
COMPETITION FORMAT
Qualifying round with a single descent, followed by a fi nal featuring the top 12
or 16 from the fi rst round. Only scores from the fi nal run count for fi nal results.
LINGO
IRON CROSS : Ski tips cross as
skier remains upright. Tips drop, but
heels are kicked to either side.
SPREAD EAGLE : Starting position for making
snow angels: arms extended and legs split, usually 90
degrees or more to the side.
360 : Upright aerial spin of 360 degrees, often
called a helicopter or chopper.
720 : Double helicopter.
MUTE GRAB : 360 with an Iron Cross Back Scratcher
in the middle (often referred to as a “Heli-Mute”).
Lexicon on MOGULS
OFF-AXIS : A true fl ip is one that turns around the
horizontal (zero degree) axis. A true spin is one that turns
around the vertical (90 degree) one. An off-axis spin or
fl ip is one that deviates from these norms.
D SPIN : A back fl ip with an off-axis twist, named after
the ‘godfather’ of newschool, Mike Douglas.
BACK FULL : A back fl ip with a full twist, both true to
the ‘normal’ axis.
LINCOLN LOOP : A sideways fl ip.
GRAB : Any part of the ski or binding that is grabbed
DUAL MOGULS
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP DISCIPLINE
HEAD TO HEAD ACTION ...
In Dual Moguls, competitors race head-to head in knock-out rounds. The
added adrenaline of racing side-by-side means skiers often push themselves
beyond their limits, resulting in either spectacular crashes or some of the
most awesome bump skiing you will ever see. Results from the Dual Moguls
competitions on the FIS World Cup tour are combined with Single Moguls
results to determine the overall FIS World Cup Mogul Champion at the end
of each year.
JUDGING
A panel of seven judges award marks: four judges score the turns, two judges
score the air (jumps), and one judge scores the speed. Each judge has fi ve
“votes” which can be allocated between the two skiers according to the course
colour they have skied in (i.e. 5 Blue/0 Red, 4 Blue/1 Red, etc). Those votes
are added up to total of 35 with a majority of 18 being needed to move on to
the next round or to win.
COMPETITION FORMAT
Competitions are either: A) Single run qualifi cation round (as per Single
Moguls) to seed the Duals, which would usually be sixteen pairs of Duals
or; B) Elimination rounds of the entire fi eld of competitors based on seeding
from either the results of a prior Dual competition or a prior Single Moguls
competition.
by the hand — there are Tail, Mute,
Japan and Toxic grabs in addition to a whole mess of
others, all which add fl avor to the tricks.
RODEO : Backwards initiated off-axis fl ip.
FLAT SPIN : Another off-axis trick, where the skier
looks like they are spinning like a horizontal wheel.
CORK 720 : Two rotations as if spinning
in a frontal wheel.

MEN
ALEX BILODEAU AND THE CANADIANS
Virtually every Canadian citizen has seen the video of Alex Bilodeau’s
historic gold-medal winning mogul run at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic
Games. Bilodeau became an overnight hero when he won Canada’s fi rst
gold medal on home soil. The 2009 Dual Moguls FIS World Champion
trained all summer in preparation for this season and is certainly the one to
watch at this year’s Deer Valley FIS World Championships. Bilodeau leads a
talented Canadian team with veterans P-A Rousseau (5th at the Vancouver
Games) and strong, young teammates like Philippe Marquis, Mikael
Kingsbury and Cedric Rochon who are all poised for break-out seasons.
DALE BEGG-SMITH, AUSTRALIA
2010 Olympic silver-medallist, 2006 Olympic Champion, four-time FIS
World Cup Champion (2010, 2008, 2007 and 2006) and 2007 World
Championship silver medallist; Begg-Smith is always a dominant fi gure on
the FIS World Cup circuit.
GUILBAUT COLAS, FRANCE
Colas leads a deep and talented French team. He won four FIS World
Cup events last year with his lightening fast speed and fi nished off the
season second in the World Cup standings for the third season in a row.
His teammates Pierre Ochs and Anthony Benna are also extremely strong
contenders and are certainly bringing the French team back to its ‘glory
years’ in the 1980’s and 1990’s when names like Edgar Grospiron, Olivier
Cotte, Bruno Bertrand and others dominated the sport.
THE AMERICANS
The next generation of American mogul skiers include current single moguls
World Champion Patrick Deneen, Bryon Wilson, Michael Morse and an
arsenal of younger skiers who proved last season that they are contenders.
They’ll continue to be a power as they are a young team with a lot of drive.
JESPER BJOERNLUND, SWEDEN
Bjoernlund charged onto last season’s radar with two FIS World Cup wins
in the fi rst event of last season. He continued his strong season fi nishing
third overall in the FIS World Cup standings.
WOMEN
JENN HEIL, CANADA
The 2010 Olympic silver medallist and 2006 Olympic champion earned
a remarkable fi fth FIS crystal globe last season after earning eight more
World Cup podiums – bringing her total to 49, 25 of them gold! Heil is
the undisputed queen of the bumps and will no doubt bring everything
she’s got to this season’s FIS World Championships. Heil is supported by
her strong Canadian teammates including Chloé Dufour-Lapointe who,
at 17, took 5th spot at the Vancouver Olympic Games and team veteran
Kristi Richards -- the 2007 FIS World Champion who gets better every year.
HANNAH KEARNEY, USA
The 2010 Olympic champion, Kearney is regularly one of the sport’s top
skiers. With her trademark braids tucked into her goggle strap and her
outspoken personality, Kearney leads a strong team of American women,
including 2010 Olympic bronze medallist Shannon Bahrke and last year’s
2nd place overall winner, Heather McPhie.
THE JAPANESE
Mogul skiing is huge in Japan, which regularly experiences record crowds
thronging the World Cup at Inawashiro. Although all-star Japanese
competitor and reigning FIS World Champion Aiko Uemura is taking the
season off, the Japanese team is still in contention. Expect to see up-andcomers
Miki Ito and Arisa Murato on the podium this season.
Aerials is one of the most technically-challenging
and spectator-captivating sports in the world. At
the World Cup level, competitors hit the jumps, or ‘kickers’ at speeds of 60
km/h or more, launch themselves some 20 meters in the air and perform
up to three back somersaults with up to fi ve twists, landing on a steep
landing hill that most people would be nervous just skiing. These are the
most diffi cult maneuvers performed in any acrobatic sport.
JUDGING
Competitors must perform two different jumps consisting of single or
multiple somersaults with or without twists. Each jump must vary by one
somersualt or one twist. Points are awarded for takeoff (20%), form in the
air (50%) and landing (30%). Scores of both jumps are combined for a
fi nal total mark.
COMPETITION FORMAT
Competitions usually include a qualifi cation round and a fi nal round with
one or two jumps in each. The exact format for each event is determined
by the FIS and the event organizing committee.
LINGO
DD:
Degree of diffi culty.
IN-RUN: Slope
leading into the
kicker --55 meters
long and 23 degrees
steep.
FULL IN: A full
twist on the fi rst fl ip
of a double somersault.
FULL OUT: Full
twist on the last fl ip
of a double or triple
somersault.
LAYOUT: Body
extends as straight
as possible. Often
called a “lay”.
PIKE: Body bends
at waist, legs stay
straight, and hands
reach forward to
toes. The standard
diving position.
KICKER: Another
name for the aerials
jumps, they ‘kick’
you into a fl ipping
maneuver.
PULL: Grabbing
your knees into
a tuck position.
RUDY: Flip with 1
1/2 twists.
STRETCH: Making
body as long as possible
because jumper
is carrying too much
speed or is too high
in the air.
TUCK: Knees tuck
in front of body to
angle of 90 degrees.

MEN
ANTON KUSHNIR, BLR
Kushnir had a phenomenal season last year. His virtually fl awless jumping
earned the Belarusian the FIS crystal globe and four FIS World Cup gold
medals. Unfortunately a bobble at the Olympic Games cost him dearly, but
the gold in Vancouver went to Kushnir’s countryman Alexei Grishin. In fact,
the Belarusians are a veritable force to be reckoned with in the Aerial world.
Others names to watch are Timofei Slivets and Dimitri Dashinski.
THE CHINESE
Last season four of the top seven FIS World Cup standing spots went to the
Chinese men, including 2010 Olympic bronze-medallist Zhongging Liu.
Other highfl yers include Guangpu Qi and Zongyang Jia. The Chinese are
coached by Canadian Dustin Wilson and have a seemingly endless supply
of talent.
THE CANADIANS
Supported by talented and proven veterans Warren Shouldice and Ryan
Blais, the Canadian men’s team has a deep pool of younger athletes who
are ready to fi ll the shoes of their high-fl ying predecessors. A result of the
much lauded Jump 2010 program, expect success from Olivier Rochon,
Rémi Bélanger, Travis Gerrits and Jonathan Vellner.
THE AMERICANS
The relatively poor showing by the Americans in last year’s FIS standings
belie the fact that this team has some promising talent. Jeret Peterson
took home the silver medal at the Vancouver Winter Olympic Games with
his signature ‘hurricane’ – a quintuple twisting back fl ip. Peterson and his
teammates, including current Aerial World Champion Ryan St Onge, Scotty
Bahrke and Matthew Depeters are taking full-advantage of their new, stateof-the-art
USSA training centre in Park City, UT.
WOMEN
THE CHINESE
The formidable Chinese women’s aerial squad took the silver (Nina Li)
and bronze (Xinxin Guo) medals at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic
Games. These two were joined in the FIS standings last season by teammate
Mengtao Xu to complete a Chinese sweep for the top three spots. With many
of the Chinese women performing triple backfl ips, this is a team that is
poised to dominate for years to come.
LYDIA LASSILA, AUS
By winning Olympic gold in Vancouver last year, Lassila follows in the
footsteps of her countrywoman Alisa Camplin, who retired with two Olympic
medals to her credit and Jacqui Cooper who recently retired with 24 FIS
World Cup victories. Lassila is a gutsy and talented jumper who is willing
to pull off the highest and hardest tricks to win. Unfortunately her dogged
persistence has also led to numerous injuries. There are also numerous
young Aussie women on the cusp of aerial greatness.
THE CANADIANS
Veronika Bauer is the veteran on this team, having been on the National Team
for a remarkable 13 years and competing at three Olympic Winter Games. In
fact, despite struggling with the long-lasting effects of a concussion, Bauer
earned herself Canada’s only female aerial berth at the Vancouver Games.
She is supported by promising Canadian aerialists Sabrina Guérin, Crystal
Lee and Laurence Allard.
THE AMERICANS
The Americans are in a building period and all the pundits are saying this
will be the team that just might be the dark horse at the Sochi Games in
2014. With talented youngsters like Ashley Caldwell and Lacy Shnoor taking
cues from veterans Emily Cook and Jana Lindsey, and training at the USSA’s
extraordinary facility in Park City, UT. Watch for a break-out year from our
neighbours to the south.
horizontal axes (either upright or inverted).
MCTWIST: Tilted front fl ip with 1½ spins.
DD 20%
The degree of diffi culty of the tricks
EXECUTION 20%
OVERALL 40%
The whole package
The basic DD equates to the number of
spins or fl ips done in the trick but the “total
package” includes the grabs and positions
(personality and style) that athletes add to
the tricks to make them their own.
GRAB: A style effect where the hand grabs
a part of the ski (there are many variations of
grabs).
ALLY-OOP: A trick that spins away from
the fall line of the pipe.
COPING: The edge of the pipe.
DECK: The fl at areas on the sides of the pipe.
Going way back, halfpipes originated from surfi ng and
then skateboarding when surfers in California decided
that trying to skate in some huge storm drains might be
a fun thing to do when the waves weren’t pumping. This
eventually evolved into skate-specifi c halfpipe so the
athletes could “drop in” (start off on the lip of the pipe).
Skateboarding moved over to the white waves when the
snowboard was perfected and the boarders decided they
wanted to bring what they had perfected on concrete over
to the snow. To make a long story short, the skiers saw the
boarders fl ying off these frozen sculpted terrain parks and
felt the desire to go higher. And voila! A new discipline
was born.
As the sport has evolved, so have the tricks. Whereas a
few years ago 1½ spins and a bunch of grabs were the
tricks of the days now it is not uncommon to see two or
three tricks involving three-and-a-half spins as well as a
couple of variations of double fl ips in one run. The pipe
has been getting bigger to accommodate the increasing
level of diffi culty of the tricks.
WALLS: The sides of the pipe.
FLAT: The bottom of the pipe.
TRANSITION: The area between
the Wall and the Flat.

MEN
JUSTIN DOREY AND MIKE RIDDLE, CAN
Justin Dorey is known for having the biggest bag of tricks in the game.
Justin burst onto the scene at 16, coming out of nowhere to win the World
Skiing Invitational. Since then, he has been a constant fi xture on the podium
at events around the globe, including the Winter X Games and the
FIS World Championships. His teammate Mike Riddle is also one to watch,
Mike has been setting the standard for style in the halfpipe for years. No
matter how diffi cult or technical his tricks, you can bet on them being performed
with the best grabs around. Mike has a large collection of podium
fi nishes at all levels, capped off last season with a victory at the Breckenridge
Dew Tour.
THE FRENCH
Kevin Rolland and Xavier Bertoni lead the ultra-strong French Halfpipe
Team. Coming from a disciplined program, they ruled the X Games and European
XGames events last year and Rolland is also the reigning FIS World
Champion. With their successes, a large group of younger skiers are rapidly
following in their footsteps.
THE AMERICANS
Tanner Hall and Simon Dumont battled for halfpipe supremacy for many
years. Tanner, a legend in freeskiing, has been out of the scene for the past
few seasons due to injury, but look for the pending Olympic announcement
to draw him back into the game. Simon is one of the most intense competitors
in the sport, known for taking huge air and a ferocious competition
mindset. Nipping at their heels is a strong group of younger American
shredders including Tucker Perkins, Taylor Seaton, Gus Kenworthy, and
Matt Duhamel.
JOSSI AND BYRON WELLS, NZL
Jossi Wells from New Zealand is the pride of the country’s winter sport
programs, after capturing the AFP Halfpipe title for the 09/10 season.
Hot on his heels is his younger brother Byron, who has been steadily rising
through the ranks.
WOMEN
CANADIANS
Sarah Burke is the winningest athlete in the sport, holder of fi ve X Games
medals, and FIS World Championship Gold, and an FIS World Cup overall title,
just to name a few. Despite breaking her back in the X Games Slopestyle
event in 2009, she came back to win her fi rst competition back on snow
last January. She is a formidable talent. Hot on Sarah’s heels is Rosalind
Groenewoud (Roz G) who recently completed a near perfect season, with
podium fi nishes in every event that she entered, including the X Games and
European X Games. Not only a pipe skier, her Slopestyle and Big Air results
are also impressive, and for the past two seasons she had been crowned the
AFP overall World Champion.
JEN HUDAK, USA
Jen Hudak is leading the American team with victories at both the X Games
and European X Games last year. A strong athlete with a strong work ethic,
Hudak was consistently atop the podium in last season.
ANASI CARADEUX, FRA
Anais Caradeux has been grabbing spots on the podium for the past few
seasons. With an aggressive approach and a solid bag of tricks, Caradeux is
a threat at any event she enters.
ADVICE TO YOUNG ATHLETES
Find something that you are
passionate about it, and don’t be
shy to dream big. You just need
patience, determination and
GROUP A
HOW DID YOU GET INTO FREESTYLE?
I always thought I was just one
of the boys, trying to keep up
with my brother and his friends
down the mogul fi elds and off
of every jump. My parents were
big advocates of skiing off the
groomed runs as well, so they
encouraged us to challenge
ourselves on the slopes.
