MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD & 

THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 

2011, Mautner Project’s 21st year, saw Mautner Project continue its unique leadership in programming 

for lesbian and bisexual women, transgender people and, in some instances, gay men. 

We created a new program in partnership with an old friend: Mautner Project and Whitman-Walker 

Health combined to create PALS: People Advocating for LGBT Seniors, a visiting program for elder 

LGBT in metropolitan DC that builds from our historic strength in serving lesbians with cancer and 

other life-threatening illnesses. In 2011 we began recruiting and training volunteers and conducting 

outreach to spread the word to this often hard-to-reach population of at-home seniors and those 

living in nursing or assisted living facilities. 

Our MOVE program (Making Our Vitality Evident) to help members of our community who wish 

to lose weight, improve their eating habits and increase their exercise got underway with the first of 

what will be five successive 12-week support, discussion, and exercise groups. In addition to serving 

our participants, MOVE is a research project funded by the DC Department of Health to carefully 

evaluate the results of the intervention. We have had one paper accepted by a peer reviewed journal 

based on our early research, and are working on additional ones; in 2011 we presented initial findings 

at the national Gay and Lesbian Medical Association conference in Atlanta. 

With funding from the DC Cancer Consortium and in partnership with three local institutions, we were 

able to mount three successful SHE Circles. These Spirit Health Education Circles gather groups of 

African American lesbian and bisexual women for 8 sessions of health education and mutual support 

for behavioral changes including timely screenings, smoking cessation and healthier eating. 

Our disease prevention work included advertising, advocacy and hands-on help to reduce tobacco 

dependency among LGBT people, particularly in the District of Columbia. The sad fact is that 

LGBT people are as much as twice as likely to smoke as heterosexuals, and our youth is particularly 

vulnerable. This is a fight that our community has not yet won, and so we must continue this work. 

As you’ll see below, our Client Services program continues to grow. We welcome new volunteers 

and new clients so please feel free to volunteer or to refer family, friends or call us yourself if needed. 

With funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure, we continue, too, our work in the community to 

educate women of the need for regular health screenings and to help them to access those screenings. 

And, mindful that when we go to get screened we want and need to be treated with insight and 

respect, we continue our Removing the Barriers trainings for medical professionals and the staffs of 

hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities.

CURRENT PROGRAMS & 

RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS 

CLIENT SERVICES: 

INFORMATION, SUPPORT & CLIENT NAVIGATION 2011 

Mautner Project staff, interns and 30 local volunteers provide a wide range of regular direct 

services to LBT women and their families. Over the past three years, we have delivered over 

10,000 hours of service. In 2011, Mautner Project served approximately 98 patients and 

caregivers in the DC area; in 2010 we served 50 and in 2009 we served 40. These clients included 

lesbian and bisexual women with cancer, partners, caregivers, and bereaved partners. Many 

of these clients are low-income and most are underinsured or uninsured. We work with some 

clients intensely over many months; we work with others over a shorter period, typically giving 

guidance to needed services including medical, psychological, legal and financial resources. In 

any given month, we serve 15 to 25 clients. 

Client Services Director Jacquetta Brooks, MSW, LGSW supervises, trains and coordinates 

the volunteers who provide practical services and emotional support. These include rides and 

accompanying to doctor and chemotherapy appointments, yard work, light house cleaning, 

visiting hospitalized patients, telephone contact, preparing meals, grocery shopping and errands. 

To broaden our reach beyond the DC metro area, Mautner Project also hosts three nationallyaccessible 

on-line support groups for LBT cancer patients, caregivers, and bereaved loved 

ones; these are particularly valuable for individuals living in rural areas or other places where 

accessing local support is difficult. As of December 2011, the Lesbian Survivors group had 22 

members, Lesbian Caregivers had 22 members, and Lesbian Bereavement had 12 members. 

Client services staff and interns (often from local universities) provide information to hundreds 

of callers requesting physician referrals, cancer-specific information, financial assistance 

information and other local resources. Students and reporters often contact MP while doing 

research on lesbian health. In 2011, MP responded to 284 requests for information from 24 

states, the District of Columbia, and 3 foreign countries. 

In 2011, Mautner Project continued its partnership with George Washington University’s 

Cancer Institute and over twenty local organizations in the District’s Cancer Patient Navigation 

Network (CPNN), which allows hospitals, clinics, and community partners to better track 

cancer patients and help them overcome barriers blocking access to quality care. CPNN offers 

support from screening through treatment and into survivorship, and attempts to address both 

physical barriers such as lack of transportation and psychosocial barriers such as language 

and anxiety. Mautner Project is assisting the rest of the Network to become more culturally 

competent regarding LGBT patients, and we are using the Network’s resources to better serve 

our own clients. 

In September of 2011, Mautner Project partnered with Whitman -Walker Health to launch a 

visiting program for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors - People Advocating 

for LGBT Seniors (PALS). PALS is a free program that aims to connect LGBT elders, 55 and older, 

who are living at home or in assisted living and nursing facilities with compassionate, trained 

volunteer visitors and, when needed, access to local resources. To date, the PALS program has 

responded to 26 requests for information and trained 5 volunteers. 




HEALTH EDUCATION AND DISEASE PREVENTION: 

OBESITY REDUCTION 

Because obese and overweight individuals are at an increased risk for cancer, high blood 

pressure, diabetes, and a number of other ailments, Mautner Project works to encourage women 

in our community to adopt behaviors that will help them to reach and maintain a healthy 

weight. In 2010, Mautner Project was awarded a 3-year grant totaling $250,000 from the District 

of Columbia Department of Health to support a project we have named MOVE: Making Our 

Vitality Evident. 

The program includes: 1) research into messaging that will encourage a diverse lesbian 

and bisexual women’s community to act to exercise more and achieve a healthy weight; 2) 

an ad campaign disseminating those messages; 3) 5 intensive 12- week group interventions 

(including exercise, nutrition education and group support) specifically crafted for lesbian/ 

bisexual women; and 4) the publication and distribution of results, replicable programs and 

recommendations for physicians and clinics. 

In 2011, Mautner Project ran the first MOVE group and recruited the second. Each group 

includes between 12 and 15 lesbian and bisexual women who are residents of DC. 

Mautner Project also mounted a public awareness campaign using social media and print 

ads in local newspapers and Metro buses, carrying our message to tens of thousands of 

District residents. 

For this program, Mautner Project is working in partnership with Dr. Sarah Fogel, an academic 

expert in lesbian obesity and a professor of nursing at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Fogel and 

Mautner Project’s Executive Director Leslie Calman presented early findings from the project 

during a session at the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association’s annual conference in Atlanta, 

and we have had an article accepted by the Journal of Homosexuality for a forthcoming issue. 

This research/intervention program has been approved by Institutional Review boards at both 

the DC Department of Health and at Vanderbilt. 





SMOKING CESSATION & TOBACCO REDUCTION 

In 2010 - 2011, Mautner Project received a $225,000 Communities Putting Prevention to Work 

(CPPW) grant from the District of Columbia Department of Health to address the high rate 

of tobacco use in the District’s LGBT community. The LGBT community is at particular risk 

from illnesses associated with tobacco use, smoking at rates up to 200% higher than their 

heterosexual counterparts. 

Tobacco companies have directly targeted the LGBT community through their advertising and 

sponsorship of LGBT events, including events that draw LGBT youth. Such advertising is meant 

to encourage new smokers as well as sustain the already sizable market of LGBT smokers. 

Mautner Project has used a multi-level approach to address the tobacco issue in the District. 

The approach included bringing together and overseeing a diverse 29-member coalition 

comprised of LGBT and non-LGBT organizations and creating and distributing community 

affirming anti-tobacco messaging. Through the coalition, Mautner Project provided culturally 

targeted outreach materials which were disseminated during community events such as Black 

Gay Pride, Youth Pride, Capital Pride and related health awareness events that reached wider 

audiences across the city. These materials were designed to direct citizens to the DC Quitline 

for free smoking cessation support. 

Together with SmokeLess LGBT DC partner The DC Center, Mautner Project facilitated the 

“American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking” smoking cessation support groups 

for 7 individuals. 

Recognizing the need to inform medical providers of the additional risk their LGBT patients 

may be facing through tobacco use, Mautner Project added smoking cessation information 

into our Removing the Barriers cultural competency training. We have been able to inform 

medical providers about the tobacco issue and provide them with a number of resources and 

interventions that are crafted to assist their LGBT clients in making successful quit attempts. 





OUTREACH, EDUCATION AND ACCESS TO SCREENING 

In 2011, Mautner Project received funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help to 

increase access to culturally competent breast cancer screening and breast cancer care for 

lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals in Washington, DC, Prince George’s County, 

MD and Arlington, VA. 

Mautner Project has long worked to create equal access to affordable breast cancer screening 

and care. Tools for Caring: Action for LBT Breast Health helps Mautner to maintain its active 

commitment to this goal. 

Mautner Project requested and received partnership commitments and letters of support 

from 12 hospitals, clinics and Departments of Health in the DC metro area. These partnership 

commitments created 184 low/no cost breast health screening slots for eligible clients. The 

partnerships also include the opportunity for clinicians and staff of these facilities to receive 

a specially created RTB training focusing on effective cross-cultural interactions in a medical 

environment, the unique breast health issues affecting lesbian, bisexual and transgender 

women and the barriers these women face in accessing care. 

Mautner Project also provides health workshops and information to women in the community 

on current screening recommendations and provides referrals to our partner locations. 

To round out these services, MP also offers patient navigation services for those clients who 

need help navigating the medical system, transportation to and from appointments and other 

direct services in the event of a breast cancer diagnosis. 

OUTREACH & EDUCATION FOR 

AFRICAN AMERICAN LESBIAN AND BISEXUAL WOMEN 

SHE Circle: Spirit Health Education Circle, originally created with support from the Centers 

for Disease Control and Prevention, provides preventive health education and facilitates 

lasting positive changes in the health behaviors of African American lesbian, bisexual, 

and same gender loving women. This medically underserved population experiences 

health disparities due to the compounded impact of race, gender, sexual orientation, and 

the numerous socioeconomic factors that are so often tied to the community. SHE Circles, 

create supportive communities for learning about and practicing wellbeing. SHE is 

groundbreaking not only in targeting health education messages to this community, 

but also in learning from this community and taking strategies that work to other 

organizations. In 2011, Mautner Project worked together with three partners – Unity 

Fellowship Church, Metropolitan Community Church of DC, and the Green Door – to 

recruit and run successful SHE Circles. 




TRAININGS: REMOVING THE BARRIERS (RTB) & 

REMOVING THE BARRIERS - SILVER EDITION 

Since 2001, Mautner Project has trained healthcare professionals to understand the needs and 

concerns of lesbian, bisexual and transgender patients in order to reduce barriers to care. 

The Mautner Project training program, Removing the Barriers (RTB) was funded by and 

developed in partnership with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was thoroughly 

tested and evaluated in 2001 prior to being scaled up, and carries continuing education 

credits for physicians, nurses and social workers. 

RTB instructors offer medical providers tools to increase their level of comfort discussing issues 

of gender and sexuality with patients, helping them to develop a common language to create 

an environment in which all patients, whatever their sexual orientation or gender presentation, 

feel comfortable sharing vital personal information. 

RTB instructors help providers to understand the diversity of the LGBT population, clarifying 

the health challenges and needs of the population as well as helping providers create a plan for 

applying the skills they’ve learned in RTB training. 

Mautner Project continues to place special emphasis on reaching providers that provide breast 

and cervical screenings while also responding to training opportunities that reach general 

practitioners, nursing staff, social workers, medical schools and schools of pharmacy. Partnering 

organizations include hospitals, Departments of Health, Breast and Cervical Early Detection 

Programs, organizations focused on the unique needs of communities of color and community 

based organizations working with homeless women and survivors of intimate partner violence. 

Since its creation, RTB has continually evolved, reflecting cultural shifts over time as well as 

incorporating the most current body of scientific data being gathered on LGBT health. In recent 

years, we have added a module addressing ways in which medical practices can appropriately 

address the needs of transgendered persons. Mautner has also expanded RTB into the area of 

LGBT aging, as well as creating a stand-alone curriculum --- Removing the Barriers – Silver 

Edition -- for use in nursing homes and long term care facilities. 

RTB has been taught in settings around the country, reaching today more than 7,000 medical 

professionals. In 2011, funding from Susan G. Komen for the Cure and from the DC Department 

of Health supported 7 RTB trainings and one Training of Trainers Institute in Washington DC; 

we also delivered an RTB to healthcare professionals in Harrisburg, PA. 

In 2011 Mautner Project was pleased to be invited for the first time to present Removing the 

Barriers to 40 students at Howard University School of Pharmacy, and to deliver a session on 

cultural competency at the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Institute. 




EDUCATION & OUTREACH 

INTERNS 

Mautner Project goes wherever we can to distribute culturally competent information about 

screenings, smoking cessation, safer sex and other health topics. In 2011 we participated in 

some twenty health fairs, conferences, and panels, ranging from the George Mason University’s 

“Breastival” to the Young Survival Conference in Orlando, Florida and the annual conference of 

the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association in Atlanta Georgia. Each June we are busy with Pride 

events in the nation’s capital, including Leather Pride, Capital Pride, Youth Pride and Black 

Pride, speaking on panels and distributing literally thousands of pieces of health literature as 

well as condoms and other safer sex materials. 

Mautner Project is fortunate to recruit highly qualified and motivated interns from colleges 

and universities, particularly from departments of public health. In addition to maximizing 

our resources through the use of these educated, highly motivated interns (some of whom are 

receiving educational credits), we are gratified to be mentoring part of the next generation of 

LGBT health activists. In the past year, we have hosted students from American University, 

University of Maryland at College Park, Howard University, George Washington University, 

University at Albany-SUNY, University of Richmond, Duke University, Syracuse University, 

College of Wooster, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Georgetown University School 

of Medicine and Mount Holyoke College. 


ADVOCACY & PARTNERSHIPS 

2011 GALA 

In order to magnify our influence, Mautner Project works in partnership with a number of different 

partners and coalitions. We built a coalition of LGBT organizations and allied organizations 

to create SmokeLess LGBT DC; in 2011 the coalition engaged in a range of educational and 

advocacy efforts. We also furthered our tobacco reduction work through the DC Tobacco Free 

Coalition. We are active participants in the DC Cancer Coalition, and in the Cancer Prevention 

Navigation Network. Mautner Project’s Executive Director serves on the Board of Directors 

of the National LGBT Health Coalition, and the National Advisory Council for the Healthcare 

Equality Index sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign and the Gay and Lesbian Health 

Association, and is affiliated with the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health of the 

Fenway Institute as a participating scientist. Our Director of Education was recruited in 2011 

to serve on the Community Advisory Board of the Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for 

Clinical and Translational Science, a group dedicated to fostering innovative cross-institutional 

research. 

Mautner Project’s 2011 Gala Dare to Be! was a success! At an evening of dancing and 

celebration at the beautiful Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., we toasted 21 

years of support and community. We honored tennis legend Martina Navratilova (Chair’s 

Award), Amy Cotton (Volunteer of the Year Award) and Metropolitan Community Church 

of DC (Healing Works Award). 

Mautner Project’s Gala is known as one of the most anticipated events on the LGBT community 

calendar in addition to being Mautner Project’s largest fundraising event. It’s always been a 

highlight for our community and this year’s celebration was no exception.
