HELLO THERE!
If you’re reading this handbook, you probably
already know—TargetCW is not your typical
company. It may feel a bit weird at first, especially
if you’re used to the cold, hyper-regulated,
corporate lifestyle. Here, we believe that freedom,
trust, fun, and dogs mean better work and better
people.
We know that sounds cheesy, but it’s true.
TargetCW was created to change the way people
experience work. We believe in self-improvement,
positivity, and living your best life- in and out of the
workplace. Also, we love cheese. So deal with it.
We hope this handbook will not only help you out
logistically, but also help you identify and
understand our culture and values.
YOU ARE MORE THAN YOUR TITLE
Here at TargetCW, we hire people. We aren't looking
to hire a skill set, technical ability, or bullet point on
a resume. Those are replaceable. People aren't.
People have talents, empathy, ideas, ambition,
opinions, humor--we hope you bring all of that with
you to work each day.
Our biggest success as an employer is employing a
group of folks who truly care about the work they're
doing and the contributions they're making. When
we hired you, we didn't just hire your skills. We hired
all of you, so don't be afraid to show up.
5

WE TRUST YOU
We are a high-trust, high-expectations workplace.
You won't find anyone tracking the exact minute you
came through the door. We do expect you to be
invested, take ownership, and produce great work.
Now, prepare yourself for a very short scary story.
Something no one wants to hear, especially at work:
On a day, much like today, in a not-so-distant future,
you will make a mistake.
That's right. Despite your intentions, planning, and
effort, a mistake will happen. And that's okay. As
people, we aren't perfect 100% of the time. We
won't hold that against you. What is important is
how you respond. We do expect you to take
ownership, learn, and do things even better the next
time around.
6

WE ARE FAMILY
It shouldn't take you long to notice that TargetCW
feels more like a family than an office of coworkers.
Hands down, the best thing about working here is
the people you get to hang out with every day. Take
some time to get to know them, and don't be
surprised if you end up with some lifelong friends.
When you are working on a project, it's important
to remember that it will almost always impact
someone else--either on your team or another. One
small change on your end might lead to headaches
for someone else.
That's why collaboration is so important.
Take time to consider all players involved, and don't
be afraid to ask around.
7

OUR VALUES
1. CONSTANT ALIGNMENT
Process of synergizing with all parties; constantly
open to adjusting strategies for greater benefits.
2. MEMORABLE SERVICE
In our words and deeds, we want to leave a positive,
lasting imprint.
3. BEAUTIFUL DESIGN
There is more than meets the eye; recognize and
analyze the path, people, and process.
8

9

WE CHOSE YOU
...and you chose us. Every day that you work
here, we are choosing each other. It's kind of
romantic, right?
While we tend to believe TargetCW is the
greatest place to work, we begrudgingly admit
that it isn't everyone's cup o' tea. Or maybe it
was at first, but we have since grown apart.
Things don't always work out, and that's okay.
You are employed at-will, meaning that either
party can end the relationship at any time, with
or without reason.
10

PROFESSIONALISM 101
Look, we aren’t going to list out the top ten policy
violations that might land you in hot water. We trust
that you already know “excessive absenteeism” or
“insubordination” are generally frowned upon in the
workplace. Besides, it is impossible to list every
single reason someone might get in trouble at work.
"What do you mean I have to wear pants to work? It
doesn't say that anywhere in the policies!“
What you should know is that we value results,
ambition, respect, and honesty. If you are lacking in
these areas, this might not be a good fit for you.
11

TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER
To quote the famous philosophical duo, Bill and Ted, "Be
excellent to each other."
The health and harmony of your team is a part of your job,
and it's probably one of the most important parts. Get to
know your people, and don't gloss over your interpersonal
skills. Be honest and direct, but be respectful. If someone is
disrespectful to you, don't be afraid to tell them how you feel.
More often than not, a direct and immediate conversation
will be the best resolution.
California law requires us to tell you that you are legally
protected from harassment and discrimination in the
workplace. If you read and truly understand this handbook—
you will already know that this type of behavior is never
acceptable at TargetCW. For more information and to review
our formal policy, go to [https://targetcw1.sharepoint.com/
12

WE DON’T HAVE ALL THE
ANSWERS
Because our industry has grown pretty big over a pretty
short amount of time, you'll probably run into a few
unknowns. There won't always be an SOP or 'best
practices' resource in place. Maybe even your manager
hasn't encountered this problem before. No one is really
sure what the "right" answer is. This may cause some
people to panic-- but we think it's exciting.*
Think of yourself as an explorer, sailing uncharted seas. Or
an astronaut, discovering new galaxies. You'll be provided
with the tools and training needed to be successful, but
sometimes, you have to figure it out yourself.
The truth of the matter is, this industry revolves around
people, and that means it can be unpredictable. You've got
to be willing to jump into a problem and work towards a
solution. Don't dwell in the negativity of the problem, roll
up your sleeves and conquer that sucker. We're all here to
help.
* Panic and excitement are not mutually exclusive
13

OPEN DOOR POLICY
When you have a question, problem, idea, snack,
concern, dog--we want you to share. Don't be afraid
to talk to us. That includes your lead, manager,
supervisor, the CEO, or whoever your "boss" is.
Bosses are here to help. They are here to lead. They
don't exist solely for the sake of a hierarchy.
We are all here because we choose to be, and we are
all working to make TargetCW the best in the
business. That means we help each other out.
14

MISSION STATEMENT
“To make the utilization for
contingent workers simple for our clients.”
15

CLIENTS ARE PART OF OUR
TEAM
We love our clients, and our clients love us. We exist to
make their lives easier, and that means we like to say yes
as much as possible.
Sometimes, saying yes is not an option. It happens, and
we totally get that. But what we have to get right is
where we go from there. Without making any gross
analogies about removing an animal's skin, let's just say
there is always another way.
In all your work and interactions with our clients, just
remember--they are a huge part of what makes our
company awesome. We have the same goals, it's just a
matter of finding the right path. Work with them, get
creative, and include them as a part of the team.
16

17

HOW WE DO
We believe in great work, great
folks, and great fun.
18

19

THE BIGGEST SMALL COMPANY
Internally, TargetCW has just over 100 people, and
we like it that way. Being small means you are more
connected to everyone you work with--which is an
integral part of our culture. We collaborate easier,
talk more, and email less. There's no need to be
overly formal here--just go have a real conversation
with someone.
Don't let the internal atmosphere fool you, though.
Externally, we are a thriving, nationwide operation,
with thousands of contingent workers on
assignment with our client companies. We work
with clients nationwide, globally and across all kinds
of industries. That's why we are the biggest small
company you've ever heard of.
20

YES, THAT IS A KEG IN THE
KITCHEN
TargetCW was born and raised in San Diego,
California, one of the top-ranked craft beer cities in
the country. As such, we feel it is an appropriate
homage to have a keg in our kitchen.
Occasionally, we will have on-site happy hours,
potlucks, pizza parties, or other events where
alcohol is served. In order to enjoy the keg, or any
other alcohol, you must complete the Alcohol Policy
Acknowledgment form.
21

WE LIKE TO PLAY
We are all about balance here, and that means we
encourage work and play. We've got a ping-pong
table, basketball hoop, gym, sporting events, happy
hours, and food...
lots of food...
We do expect that you will be responsible in all
aspects of your employment with TargetCW,
including the fun stuff. Don't ruin a good thing by
overdoing it. While we like to have a good time here,
if your work performance is affected, there may be
corrective measures may be taken.
22

DON’T TALK ABOUT IT…
Say it with us: "Be about it!"
As much as we enjoy talking about our passion and
big picture goals, we recognize and value results.
We welcome you go-getters and nose-grinders. We
are a small(ish) operation, so that means we need
everyone to have an all-hands-on-deck attitude. If
something is broken, or dirty, don't be afraid to fix it,
or clean it up. That goes for processes and our
facilities.
Keep in mind that we do a lot of work in this
building, and processes that may seem broken or
frustrating might just be misunderstood. Sometimes,
the best way isn't always the easiest. Make sure
you're getting all the information before you do a
complete makeover.
23

OPEN OFFICE
Our workspace has been specifically designed to foster
a high-trust, open, connected community. No depressing
rows of cream-colored cubicles. No permanently-shut
venetian blinds. We may have some closed doors from
time to time, but even those are primarily made of glass.
Our space has a lot of benefits, but it also requires us to
be more aware of ourselves. A few vibrant
conversations can turn into a dull roar pretty quickly.
Try to keep workspaces quiet, respectful and workrelated
so your coworkers don't try to vote you off the
island.
Feel free to take personal conversations to the kitchen,
gym, or take a walk around the building. It's
permanently 75 degrees here, so you might as well take
advantage.
24

25

WORK IT OUT
Take a walk. Hit the gym. Play a round of ping- pong.
Shoot some hoops. Participate in a deskercize
challenge. We are in full support of your total
wellness: mind, body, and spirit.
If you use our gym, be sure to keep safety in mind at
all times. Bring a friend, wipe things down, put the
weights back and out of the way, and please, no DIY
ninja warrior courses. While we believe in all your
abilities, our Worker's Compensation carrier would
dump us immediately and who likes getting dumped?
Physical Activity policy, go to
26

THE KITCHEN
We stock our kitchen with tons of food every week.
Anything in the common pantries or refrigerator is
fair game. If you bring your own lunch, you can use
the bottom half of the hall refrigerator. But please,
don't abandon your poor Tupperware. Orphaned
Tupperware is a growing epidemic, and we hate to
see these lonely guys be discarded.
…But seriously, they will get thrown out. You've
been warned.
27

SOME LOGISTICAL ITEMS
Our office is open from 6:30 AM to 5:30 PM
Monday through Friday. If you need to work beyond
those hours (showoff ), you can request a key
from the Office Manager. Just keep in mind, that key
is yours and yours alone.
When it comes to parking, be courteous to our
neighbors and stick to our side of the lot. Our
neighbors happen to be the Department of Justice,
so you definitely do not want to get on their bad
side. If you can, leave some open spots near the front
door for any visitors, too.
28

OH, WE ALSO PAY YOU
All your timesheets will be completed online at
https://webcenter.targetcw.com/. Be sure to submit
your timecard by 2 PM each Monday or fear the
wrath of your internal HR team. Payday is every
Thursday and your funds will be directly deposited
in your handy dandy bank account.
Be sure to complete your timesheets
accurately. If you are hourly (non-exempt), overtime
requires manager approval. And while we love all
you eager beavers, please don't work from home
without advanced approval.
29

GIVE ME A BREAK
If you hear a small rumbling near your workspace, it
may very well be your stomach telling you IT IS TIME
FOR LUNCH. Please, take your lunch break.
California law requires you take it within the first 5
hours of your day, so go take advantage of the
kitchen, or one of the many, many delicious spots in
the area.
We feel it goes without saying, but you are free to
take breaks as needed. Get up, stretch those legs,
grab a snack/coffee/cheez-its--whatever. For more
information and to review our formal policy, go to
[https://targetcw1.sharepoint.com/
NEIGHBORHOOD/Policies & Procedures/
SitePages/Home.aspx].
30

HOLIDAY, CELEBRATE!
Please do not show up on the following days: New
Year’s Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day,
Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and the
Friday after, and Christmas Day. These are paid
holidays*. Go hang out with someone else for a
change.
TargetCW also provides Paid Time Off (PTO), which
can be used for vacations, sick days, mental health
days, kids' recitals, whatever. You accrue 2 hours per
week, up to 13 days per year. For our seasoned
employees (5+ years), you will receive 18 days per
year. PTO can be used in hourly increments as well,
for appointments and half-days.
*Hourly Employees are eligible for paid holidays after 90
days of employment.
31

SCHEDULING
Here at TargetCW, we use our Outlook calendars.
We use them to book meeting spaces, take PTO, sign
up for massages, and occasionally to actually plan a
meeting. To use, create a meeting invite and loop in
the relevant email addresses.
A few ground rules:
• When planning PTO, make sure you set the
availability as "Free," so your team isn't "In a
Meeting" all day.
• Be courteous of meeting room times and
reservations.
• Scheduling Assistant is your friend.
32

33

GIVE BACK
TargetCW takes charity seriously. We love to give
back to our communities, and we want everyone to
have the opportunity to give back. That's why we
offer employees 2 paid days per year for for acts of
service. Additionally, we offer a donation match up
to $5,000 a year for approved 501(c)(3) charities. So
get out there and spread some love to those in need!
If you are interested in either of these opportunities,
talk with your manager and get involved. You can
also check out our website for more information:
NEIGHBORHOOD/Perks & Benefits/SitePages/
Home.aspx].
34

MOVIN’ ON UP
TargetCW works hard at being a place of
opportunity. Our figure-it-out-as-you-go mentality
means we can be flexible. We can match projects
with skills, even if it's outside your job description,
team, or even department.
Eligibility depends largely on you. If you are doing
your current job well, and show the drive and
initiative to take on new tasks, we can work with you
to reach your goals.
If you are interested in seminars, trainings, or other
professional outside development resources, talk to
your manager.
35

I GOTTA GO
I know we have been talking a lot about work, but let’s
switch gears a bit. What about life? What happens
when you need to care for a family member—or you’re
getting a brand new one? In addition to your PTO, you
may be entitled to additional leave through the Family
and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). You can use this time
for parental leave, for your own medical issue, or to
care for certain family members. For those of you
working in California, you may receive even more time
through the California Family Rights Act (CFRA) and
Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL).
Check out more information, eligibility requirements,
and durations at [https://targetcw1.sharepoint.com/
NEIGHBORHOOD/Perks & Benefits/SitePages/
Home.aspx].
36

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE
NEIGHBORHOOD
It may sound cheesy that we keep referring to our
team as a family but, when you join our team it’s
genuinely like moving into a new neighborhood. You
know the type of neighborhood you see on TV
where all your neighbors bring cookies and invite
you to the annual cookout… yeah that’s us. So, we’d
like to be the first ones to welcome you to the
neighborhood!
To make your move into our hood a walk through
the park, we have created an intranet that will give
you access to all things corporate. You’ll find links to
all our favorite websites and updates on all our
policies, training materials, events, etc. To check out
the Neighborhood, go to [https://
targetcw1.sharepoint.com/NEIGHBORHOOD/
SitePages/Home.aspx].
37

DOGS: WE HAVE THEM
Studies have shown:
• When dogs are around, most people feel
relaxed and happy.
• Being in the presence of a pet, for instance in
the workplace, lowers blood pressure and
cortisol (stress) levels while heightening
endorphins and oxytocin, the hormone linked to
maternal bonding.
Things to know:
• It’s not unheard of for a dog to wander into a
meeting.
• In the winter, the dogs will wear sweaters. Deal
with it.
• If you haven’t already met her, Cooper is our
main office pup. If you want to bring in your dog,
you got to get it approved by Cooper’s Dad (a.k.a.
the CEO).
38

39

ADAPT
Our entire industry is built around one
truth--the workforce is ever-changing. In
order to continue to be the best in the
business, we need to change along with it.
40

THERE’S NO CRYING IN
BASEBALL
Criticizing is easy, creation is hard. It's an age-old
concept and it's especially accurate for the
workplace. It's easy to poo-poo an idea or process,
but harder to invent solutions. Especially solutions
where all moving parts benefit.
Don't get us wrong--critiques are definitely an
important part of improving. We love to ask the
question, "How can this be done better?" But the
key difference is improving and the will to work for
it.
When you encounter something that’s a little
frustrating about how we work, remember that it’s
likely the result of something else about this place
that you love.
41

HUMANS CHANGE TOO
Our company literally used to be a group of friends
with a simple idea to provide better service. Since
then, we have grown and changed a LOT, and our
internal makeup is more diverse than ever.
We love that. We celebrate diversity and encourage
everyone to get to know each other, work together,
and exchange freely. Just like a typical family, we
have different perspectives and experiences, but
that only makes us stronger.
Friction may arise from these differences. We are all
humans, it happens. But if it does, we hope you will
be able to be open and honest with each other. If
you're struggling, talk to someone. We are all here
to make this place the best it can be.
A: Samer Bucks are these wonderful pieces of paper
that you can receive for going above and beyond your
job duties. They can be used for car washes, extra long
massages, a beer on Fridays, and for the occasional
Samer Store.
A: Call your manager, let them know the situation and
any major things going on with your desk. We will take
care of the rest… besides the burst in your water pipe,
we legally can’t help with that and low key don’t want
to.
A: You’re lucky we like you because for some of us, it
took a while to discover the wonderful secret food
places around here. A good place for beer and an outof-this-world
grilled cheese is Elbow Room. The best
Pho in town, a classic here at TCW, is Pho Fusion. A
good sandwich place with a funny owner who may or
may not call you beautiful is Lit’l Pepper. Good fast
food joints are Wendy’s, In-N-Out, Jersey Mike’s, Grab
N Go, Mauricio's, Tigris, and Rubio's. Basically, there
are a lot, open up a map and explore the local spots.
