my own business with an ex-friend.
At the ripe age of 50 I was able to draw
my BT pension and go into semiretirement,
just doing a few days
management consultancy. Less than three
years ago I got involved with Suffolk
ACRE (Action with Communities in
Rural England , a charity supporting
individuals and communities help
themselves. I was their Director of
Operations for nearly 10 years but retired
fully in May 2013 and now seem to have
less time to myself than ever!

Turkey. Recently moved back to the UK as
Sales Director of Citroen UK.
Now living in Leamington Spa; 50 years

I left school from the upper sixth in 1972
and qualified as a teacher, graduating from
Cambridge University in 1976. Having
taken up gainful employment, I taught
geography for ten year, the last three as
Head of Department, on the way studying
for an MA.in 1979. By 1985 and with an
expanding family, it was clear that my
salary was not growing at the same rate
and I therefore changed track and joined
the Metropolitan Police in 1986. The
following 27 years were a bit of a roller
coaster of fun and some really serious stuff
thrown in. I retired this last summer,
having spent the last few years as the
supervisor in the police office at the
Crown Court at Wood Green.
It is now six months since I finished work
and I do not really miss it at all! Holidays
abroad, finding new places in Britain with
my caravan and my role as a new 'granddad'
takes up a good deal of my time.

On leaving Stationers' in 1961 I trained
with Ford Motor Company, Dagenham in
Management Accountancy. Following
qualification I moved around for a period
including 5 years in finance on Sugar
Estates in Jamaica (a marked contrast to
Dagenham) and a year in the States.
Returning to the UK I joined a marine
equipment company called Kelvin Hughes
based at Hainault. After a period running
Finance and then Marketing I became
MD for a period of 7 years. The parent
company Smiths Industries (historically
clocks and watches, motor car
instrumentation) then moved me run
their Aerospace Division at Basingstoke.
Some years after retiring I moved from
Hampshire to Essex to be nearer to family.
My main hobby these days is playing golf,
or to be more accurate trying to.
