Geoffrey Barnard arrived at Stationers' in
1949 to teach English at a similar time as
John Becker, to teach languages, French
and German. However, both had musical
talent with Geoffrey Barnard regularly
playing the organ, as well as John Becker.
Geoffrey Barnard arrived in
September,1949, leaving in July 1951 and
John Becker arrived in September, 1949
and left in July,1952. At that time there
was only a part time Music Master, so
Geoffrey and John set to in order to
support all the Music activities. Geoffrey
and John were both very much involved in
the Music for the Dedication of the
Memorial Window, placed in position in
January, with the service taking place at
3pm on Sunday, 19th February 1950, by
the Right Rev. The Lord Bishop of
London, Dr Wand. Interestingly the
Bishop paused between the hymn 'Now
thank we all our God' and the General
Thanksgiving to dedicate the readingdesk
which the members of the school
Staff have given in memory of their
colleague, F/O D. M.P.Jones. John Becker
remembers that service and his comments
are recorded in magazine No.59 Spring
2004 pages 16 and 17 in a special report
he wrote on attending The Rededication
of the War Memorial Window on
December 12, 2003. The original report of
the Dedication of the Memorial Window
in 1950 is to be found in Volume XXXVII
No.1 of The Stationer April 1950.
A flavour of Geoffrey's musical ability is
recorded in a report of the School Concert
in 'The Stationer' of July 1951 Vol.
XXXVIII No.2 by A.D.Dayan (VI).
A very pleasant afternoon was spent in the
Hall on Monday, March 19th, when the
School Concert was held there.
It began with some fine piano playing by
Messrs. Barnard and Titshall who 'set the
pace' for the whole show with such pieces
as 'The arrival of the Queen of Sheba' and
'Mr. Bach Goes to Town'.The last musical
item was the Staff Song sung by Messrs.
Durrant, Barnard and Becker, with lyrics
by Mr. D.J.O'Connell. This song fully
lived up (down) to its reputation of last
year.
One other event in the programme that
surprised me was that Mr.S. Holmes produced
a most unexpected pleasing result with the
IVth Form P.T Groups in 'Music and
Movement'. It was astonishing to see what
grace can be found in schoolboys who are
normally the clumsiest of people. Is there any
Old Stationer who remembers any of these
events? M.J.Cowling is mentioned and
B.Humphreys, Form II who gave a delightful
violin solo.Ed.
