train to Newport and getting an express to
Lucien Perring
More recently I have received a School Concert
Programme for December 18th and 19th,
1922 that took place in the School Hall, the
Library as those who were at Stationers' after
1942 will remember. The conductor was
Norman Collie. Lucien has unearthed this
treasure from his archives, as his father,
C.A.PERRING attended Stationers' and his
name appears on the progamme in the Band,
as playing the piano and also in item 5 Piano
Solo playing 'Premier Scherzo in B Minor' by
Chopin. Julian Perring also attended, Lucien's
brother, Julian Perring also attended
Stationers' from 1954-1961. Lucien was at
Stationers' 1949-1954.
Greetings
Looking through an on-line auction in
Pietermaritzburg of old books, mainly
Africana, I suspect that the last thing any
one of us might have expected to see
would be The Old Stationer of Summer
1998.....the HW Symons Memorial
Edition. But there it was. I would have
bought it regardless but being Joe's issue
made it rather special. Particularly
unforgettable was his saying to me that
the letter purporting to have been written
by my mother might have worked bar the
for the fact that one doesn't fall UP the
stairs. My truancy (to watch an Arsenal
FA Cup replay) would be rewarded by six
of the best wielded by Josh.
He did have sympathy though, as Arsenal
had lost 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion.
What a man. What a teacher.
'Lot 456 was duly purchased for the
princely sum of less than 10p including
auctioneer's commission and VAT. I tried
to track down the mystery OS supplier
but only got as far as the dealer who had
purchased it in a job lot and had no idea
as to the origins. To my knowledge, we
don't have any OS in that area so it would
be interesting to find out how it got to the
auction.
Hope all is well
Best wishes
Ian Snelling
Ian, did you attend Stroud Green School with
others who went on to Stationers'? Ed.
I was set somewhat aback by an item on
school buddies on page 22 of the July
2013 of the Old Stationer mag, as my
name Terry Miller was quoted on the
second paragraph down the page . Mostly,
I was called 'Dusty' Miller in those days,
and just about all the boys quoted I
remember well! Alan Berwick – Peter
Lack – Keith Ranger.
I wonder if any of the guys quoted are still
around?
Kindest regards
Terry (Dusty) Miller
Greetings and congratulations once again
for a real memory stirrer.
The beginning is a good place to start
with the President's pic and his story
inside. I too started off in Stroud Green,
my barber was in Mt Pleasant Villas near
the Stapleton Hall Road end and in the
late 30s and forties on e attraction was the
slot machine beside the entrance door
where one could obtain 2 Players Weights
cigarettes and a match for a penny in the
slot. From 1931 to 1937 I lived opposite
the Infants entrance gate of Stroud Green
School where I attended until I joined
Stationers' in 1937. There were a number
of us who made the move at or about that
time including OSCAR BLAKE, BOB
BARHAM, STAN WHINES,
NORMAN RYDEN, PETER NOBLE,
PETER HIGGET, JOHN CORPS,
STAN WADSWORTH, and RAY
BEARD who is in the photo on page 21
of the last edition Number 77, third from
