inclined. Be it, that a cure requires hard work, are<br />

not LIFE, HEALTH,happiness, worth working<br />

hard to obtain? If in Niagara rapids, and certain to<br />

be precipitated over its yawning precipice in case<br />

you remain passive, but could save yourself by<br />

powerful effort, would you fold your hands?<br />

Would you not tax every energy of life to its<br />

utmost? What will not man do for his LIFE? And<br />

your life is at stake, and the prize of effort. I hear<br />

your eager inquiry, 'What shall I do to be saved?'<br />

Abstain totally<br />

"The least indulgence weakens hope, and is like<br />

paddling the canoe down the Niagara rapids,<br />

instead of toward its banks. Gradual emancipation,<br />

like leaving off drinking by degrees, will certainly<br />

increase both indulgence and suffering. This is true<br />

of all bad habits--is a law of things, and especially<br />

applicable here. 'Now is the accepted time; behold<br />

now is the day of salvation.' Some of my<br />

contemporaries advise occasional indulgence.<br />
