Campus Resources<br />
Part-Time Employment<br />
Part-time employment opportunities may be available for<br />
students both on- and <strong>of</strong>f- campus. Positions may be career<br />
related co-ops or internships, Federal Work Study jobs,<br />
part-time, or seasonal work. Co-ops, internships and some<br />
on-campus jobs are posted in the Career Development<br />
Center (CDC) e-Recruiting database. Other on-campus positions<br />
may be announced directly by individual university<br />
departments. Students interested in finding employment<br />
<strong>of</strong>f-campus in their field <strong>of</strong> study may wish to get job search<br />
assistance and attend an Introduction to Cooperative<br />
Education and Internship Workshop hosted by the CDC.<br />
Communication Across the Curriculum Program<br />
The CAC helps students understand the role <strong>of</strong> writing<br />
and speaking in their academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional lives.<br />
Both on its website (www.cac.iit.edu) and through the<br />
IIT Writing Center (see page 230), located in Siegel Hall<br />
232-233, the CAC provides assistance in communication<br />
skills for academic inquiry, pr<strong>of</strong>essional research, and the<br />
workplace. The CAC also assists IIT instructors in devel-<br />
Counseling Center<br />
The Counseling Center provides pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling<br />
and psychological services, including evaluations and<br />
therapy for a wide variety <strong>of</strong> personal situations. These<br />
range from adjusting to a new environment to significant<br />
depression, anxiety, anger, trauma, interpersonal problems,<br />
and other difficulties. Psychological assessments<br />
are available for learning disabilities, attention deficit<br />
disorders, and other conditions that may affect a<br />
student’s performance and for which accommodations<br />
may be made in the classroom and for exams. Academic<br />
and career concerns are also addressed, including assistance<br />
with study skills, test taking, and indecision about<br />
majors or career directions.<br />
Services are provided by pr<strong>of</strong>essionals with doctoral<br />
degrees in counseling and psychology and externs from<br />
Disability Resources<br />
Services for persons with disabilities are coordinated by<br />
the Center for Disability Resources. Persons with disabilities<br />
who are interested in applying for admission to any<br />
<strong>of</strong> IIT’s educational programs are invited to call the<br />
Ed Kaplan Entrepreneurial Studies Program<br />
The entrepreneurial studies program is designed for<br />
students who are planning to go into business for themselves,<br />
join an entrepreneurial venture, or want to develop<br />
a better understanding <strong>of</strong> what entrepreneurship is and<br />
what it might be like to work for a start-up company. The<br />
program will be multidisciplinary and will include busi-<br />

Appointments for individual career counseling may be<br />
made by calling (312) 567-6800.<br />
International students (on F1 visa) are restricted to oncampus<br />
employment for their first academic year <strong>of</strong> study<br />
at any school in the United States. After completing one<br />
academic year in the country, students on an F1 visa may<br />
be eligible for opportunities <strong>of</strong>f-campus (only if related to<br />
their field <strong>of</strong> study) through the Cooperative Education or<br />
Summer Internship Programs.<br />

courses—particularly Introduction to the Pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
(ITP), writing-intensive courses (C-Courses), and<br />

administers IIT’s Basic Writing Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirement.<br />

Counseling Center staff. A psychiatrist is on campus one<br />
half-day a week for medication. There is no charge for<br />
most services, although there is a fee, usually covered by<br />
insurance, for appointments with the psychiatrist and<br />
medication. The Counseling Center follows the ethics and<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional standards <strong>of</strong> the American Psychological<br />
Association and state laws regarding confidentiality.<br />
In addition to individual appointments, the Counseling<br />
Center <strong>of</strong>fers therapy groups, educational programs on<br />
topics such as cultural adjustment, time management,<br />
stress reduction, alcohol and drug use, communicating<br />
effectively, dating, and responsible sexual behavior. For<br />
emergencies when the Counseling Center is closed,<br />
