Air Force Leadership Studies II<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional knowledge,<br />

skills required <strong>of</strong> an Air Force<br />

AS 401<br />

National Security Affairs<br />

This course is designed for college<br />

seniors and gives them the foundation<br />

to understand their role as military<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers in American society. The<br />

course closely examines the national<br />

security process, regional studies, Air<br />

Force doctrine, and current issues<br />

affecting the military pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />

Emphasis is also given on refining<br />

oral and written communication<br />

skills. Continuation <strong>of</strong> Leadership<br />

AS 402<br />

Preparation for Active Duty<br />

Designed for college seniors and gives<br />

them the foundation to understand<br />

their role as military <strong>of</strong>ficers in<br />

American society. This course builds<br />

upon the subject matter previously<br />

covered in AS 401 and also further<br />

examines regional studies, advanced<br />

leadership ethics, military justice, the<br />

military as a pr<strong>of</strong>ession, and <strong>of</strong>ficership.<br />

Preparation for active duty life<br />

is one <strong>of</strong> the core elements <strong>of</strong> this<br />

course, and students will learn the<br />

role <strong>of</strong> an Air Force commander in<br />

addition to the different services and<br />

programs available on a military<br />

installation. Emphasis is also given on<br />

refining oral and written communication<br />

skills. Continuation <strong>of</strong> Leadership<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> Air Force customs and<br />

courtesies, drills and ceremonies, issuing<br />

military commands, instructing,<br />

directing and evaluating the preceding<br />

skills, studying the environment <strong>of</strong><br />

an Air Force <strong>of</strong>ficer, and learning<br />

about the areas <strong>of</strong> opportunity available<br />

to commissioned <strong>of</strong>ficers.<br />

Planning and controlling <strong>of</strong> military<br />

activities <strong>of</strong> the cadet corps, preparation<br />

and presentation <strong>of</strong> briefings<br />

and other oral and written communications.<br />

Introduction to the Pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />

Introduction to the biological sciences,<br />

scientific method, computing tools,<br />

and interrelations <strong>of</strong> biological sciences<br />

with chemistry, physics and other<br />

BIOL 107<br />

General Biology Lectures<br />

This course emphasizes biology at the<br />

organismal level. It provides an introduction<br />

to the study <strong>of</strong> the structure<br />

and function <strong>of</strong> plants and animals,<br />

their origin and evolution, their reproduction<br />

and genetics, their diversity<br />

and ecological relations. BIOL 107<br />

plus BIOL 115 constitutes a one-year<br />

sequence in biology. Acceptable as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> the science component <strong>of</strong> the<br />

General Biology Laboratory<br />

A laboratory course to accompany<br />

BIOL 107. Prerequisite: Concurrent<br />

Human Biology<br />

This course covers selected topics in<br />

biology <strong>of</strong> particular relevance to<br />

humans and to human health and disease.<br />

Topics include biology <strong>of</strong> human<br />

cells and selected organ systems;<br />

neurobiology including psychoactive<br />

IIT Undergraduate Bulletin 2006–2008<br />

drugs and drug addiction; development<br />

and birth defects; genetics and<br />

genetic diseases; toxicology; the<br />

immune system and immunologic<br />

diseases such as AIDS; human nutrition<br />

and nutritional effects; and<br />

microbial human diseases. BIOL 107<br />

plus BIOL 115 constitutes a one-year<br />

sequence in biology. Acceptable as<br />

part <strong>of</strong> science component <strong>of</strong> the<br />

BIOL 117<br />

Experimental Biology<br />

A biology laboratory course to accompany<br />

BIOL 115. A cellular approach to<br />

the functional organization <strong>of</strong> organs<br />

and organ systems. Laboratories will<br />

include the application <strong>of</strong> experimental<br />

methods and techniques for<br />

understanding the relationships<br />

between cell function and structure.<br />

Microbiology Lectures<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> microorganisms and their<br />

Genetics<br />

An introduction to transmission and<br />

molecular genetics designed for both<br />

biology and other science and engineering<br />

majors. Applications <strong>of</strong> genetics to<br />

solution <strong>of</strong> various practical problems<br />

will also be discussed. Prerequisite:<br />

One semester <strong>of</strong> college-level biology,<br />

e.g., BIOL 107, BIOL 115, or consent<br />

Microbiology Laboratory<br />

Isolation and identification <strong>of</strong> micro<br />

organisms, microbial growth, design<br />

<strong>of</strong> culture media, microorganisms as<br />

biocatalysts, environmental microbiology,<br />

quantitative microbiology,<br />

introduction to microbial genetics, and<br />

genetic engineering. Prerequisite:<br />

Concurrent or previous enrollment<br />
