Social Sciences<br />

A political science undergraduate degree is common for<br />

the following types <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals: lawyers, journalists,<br />

policy analysts, planners, scientists, business managers,<br />

politicians or medical people. Such pr<strong>of</strong>essionals are in<br />

constant need for information on and understanding <strong>of</strong><br />

the political, legal, governmental and public implications<br />

<strong>of</strong> their fields.<br />

Students seeking a major in political science are required<br />

to complete 33 credits in political science. With department<br />

approval, up to 18 hours <strong>of</strong> coursework in related<br />

Sociology<br />

Sociology may be defined as the study <strong>of</strong> societies, communities,<br />

organizations and groups. It examines the<br />

structure and process <strong>of</strong> society and <strong>of</strong> the social groups<br />

that compose it. The focus is <strong>of</strong>ten on how people coordinate<br />

their activities to reach individual and collective<br />

goals in a wide range <strong>of</strong> settings including work, educational,<br />

religious, familial and political settings.<br />

Sociological analysis explores social situations from the<br />

standpoint <strong>of</strong> the roles, meanings and norms that make<br />

behavior predictable and organized. It investigates how<br />

such patterns <strong>of</strong> interdependent activity arise and what<br />

sustains them; why they take one shape instead <strong>of</strong> another;<br />

Public Administration<br />

Public administration emphasizes public management,<br />

policy analysis and financial management <strong>of</strong> governmental<br />

organizations. Public administration courses are generally<br />

<strong>of</strong>fered only at the graduate level, but are generally open<br />

be required to take a course requiring completion <strong>of</strong> a<br />

research paper. Students seeking a minor in political<br />

science are required to complete 15 credits in political<br />

science. Additional courses may be required to prepare<br />

students for pr<strong>of</strong>essional training and for entrance in<br />

their chosen pr<strong>of</strong>essional field, such as law or medicine.<br />
