IIT History and Campuses<br />
IIT’s traditions span more than a century <strong>of</strong> innovation<br />
and educational leadership. IIT came into being in 1940<br />
with the merger <strong>of</strong> Armour <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Technology</strong><br />
(founded in 1892) and Lewis <strong>Institute</strong> (founded in 1896).<br />
Today, the university has several campuses and <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
degree programs through the College <strong>of</strong> Architecture,<br />
Armour College <strong>of</strong> Engineering, <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business and<br />
Interpr<strong>of</strong>essional Studies, Chicago-Kent College <strong>of</strong> Law,<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Design, Center for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development,<br />
<strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Psychology, College <strong>of</strong> Science and Letters,<br />
and Stuart School <strong>of</strong> Business.<br />
The 120-acre Main Campus is located three miles south<br />
<strong>of</strong> the central business district in Chicago, and is internationally<br />
known for its architecture. The Master Plan <strong>of</strong><br />
the campus and many <strong>of</strong> its 50 buildings were developed<br />
by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, one <strong>of</strong> the century’s most<br />
influential architects.<br />
IIT’s Downtown Campus, at 565 W. Adams St. in the<br />
West Loop business district, houses the Chicago-Kent<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Law, Stuart School <strong>of</strong> Business, and the<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Public Administration program. A shuttle-bus<br />
provides transportation between the Main and Downtown<br />
campuses.<br />
The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> Design, 350 N. LaSalle St., is in an outstanding<br />
downtown location and state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art facility.<br />

The Daniel F. and Ada L. Rice Campus, at 201 E. Loop<br />
Road in Wheaton, Ill., is IIT’s west-suburban location.<br />
Graduate and upper-division undergraduate courses and<br />
degree programs are available at the Rice Campus via<br />
evening and Saturday classes and via courses broadcast<br />
live through IIT Online.<br />
The Center for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Development <strong>of</strong>fers degree<br />
programs in information technology and management<br />
and in manufacturing technology and management,<br />
non-credit short courses, and information technology<br />
training programs.<br />
IIT Online delivers courses via the Internet and links<br />
classroom studios on campus with remote TV receiving<br />
sites. IIT Online’s talk-back feature permits students in<br />
receiving classrooms to participate in class discussions.<br />
IIT has more than 50 receiving sites throughout the<br />
Chicago area.<br />
M<strong>of</strong>fett Campus, in southwest-suburban Summit-Argo,<br />
houses the National Center for Food Safety and<br />
<strong>Technology</strong> (NCFST), a multidisciplinary food safety<br />
research facility, which is funded by the U.S. Food and<br />
Drug Administration and the food industry. Established<br />
with a gift from CPC International, Inc., the campus has<br />
enabled the university to develop academic programs in<br />
food safety and technology. Courses leading to master’s<br />
degrees and certificate programs in food safety and technology<br />
and in food process engineering are <strong>of</strong>fered at this<br />
facility.<br />
