CAA expedites enforcement
action against Ryanair
The UK Civil Aviation Authority
(CAA) has launched enforcement
action against Ryanair for persistently
misleading passengers
with inaccurate information regarding
their rights in respect of
its recent cancellations. Ryanair,
in announcing thousands more
cancellations to its scheduled
programme, the airline has again
failed to provide customers with
the necessary and accurate information
relating to their passenger
rights, particularly around rerouting
and care and assistance entitlements,
which includes expenses,
the CAA said. Chief Executive,
Andrew Haines, said: “There are
clear laws in place, which are intended
to assist passengers in the
event of a cancellation, helping
minimise both the frustration and
inconvenience caused by circumstances
completely out of their
control. The CAA may seek legal
undertakings from operators to
ensure they change their policies
and comply with the law. Ryanair
has replied: “We will be meeting
with the CAA and will comply fully
with whatever requirements they
ask us to.”
Bombardier Vs Boeing
Tariff war threatens UK retaliation
The British government has warned
aircraft maker Boeing that it could
lose UK defence contracts over its
part in a US decision to slap tariffs
of 219% on rival Bombardier. The
move would make the C Series
product line much more expensive
in the key US market.
Fears are that
tariffs could
threaten Bombardier
jobs in
Belfast, in the
UK where the
C Series wings
are built. Rival
Boeing has argued that Bombardier
had received unfair state subsidies
from the UK and Canada, making
the new jetliners cheaper to buy
than it cost to build them.
“The simple truth is that Bombardier
created a superior aircraft that is more
efficient.....”
Bombardier
A Bombardier statement said:
“Bombardier shares Boeing’s commitment
to a level playing field, but
in this case, they were not even
on the field. Delta ordered the
C Series because Boeing stopped
making an aircraft of the size Delta
needed years ago. It is pure hypocrisy
for Boeing to say that the
C Series launch pricing is a “violation
of global trade law” when Boeing
does the same for its new aircraft.
jobs around the world, including
thousands of U.K and U.S. jobs
The U.S. government should reject
Boeing’s attempt to tilt the playing
field in its favour and
impose an indirect tax
the new nacelle’s design and reliability.
Sepang Aircraft Engineering opens second
hangar
Sepang Aircraft Engineering (SAE) officially
opened its second hangar on September 21. The
event also celebrated the 10th anniversary of
the independent maintenance, repair and overhaul
(MRO) centre. The 12,000 m² hangar boosts
SAE’s capacity to handle the Airbus A320 Family,
and can accommodate two of the aircraft at
any time for major maintenance checks. It also
features Malaysia’s first eco-friendly closed-door
dedicated paint bay, as well as state-of-the-art
workshops for the repair and overhaul of a wide
range of components used on Airbus aircraft, including
hydraulic and pneumatic systems. SAE’s
first hangar, which opened in 2007, has a floor
area of 37,000 m² and can accommodate up to
six single-aisle aircraft or two wide-body aircraft
at any one time. In addition to its commercial
aircraft activities, SAE provides spare parts and
technical support services to the Royal Malaysian
Air Force’s fleet of A400M military airlifters.
Airbus has initiated its latest research in further reducing the fuel consumption of airliners
– keeping the company and Europe at the forefront of enhancing air transportation’s ecological
footprint. This milestone was the Airbus A340 Flight Lab’s first takeoff equipped with
outer wing sections designed for highly smooth airflow over their surfaces. Known as natural
laminar flow, such smoothed passage of air creates less drag than the airflow on traditional
wings, potentially reducing fuel burn by as much as 4.6% on an 800-nautical mile trip. Designated
as project BLADE – an acronym for Breakthrough Laminar Aircraft Demonstrator in
Europe – this research effort utilizes the first-ever A340 jetliner produced by Airbus, with its
outboard wings replaced with approximately 10-meter-long laminar wing panels. These panels
represent about two-thirds of the wing size on a short- or medium-range airliner, for which the
laminar flow technology is deemed best suited. BLADE is organized through Europe’s Clean
Sky aeronautical research program. The BLADE project involves 21 European partners with 500
contributors, including GKN Aerospace: designer of the starboard laminar flow wing panel,
and Saab: designer of the port wing segment.
Airbus flight test engineer Philippe Seve said preparations of the A340 BLADE testbed have
spanned 16 months, which included integration of the laminar flow wing sections, along with
the installation of a highly complex installation of sensors and instrumentation to collect 2,750
dedicated measurements during some 150 flight test hours.
A team of 10 specially-trained pilots, test engineers and flight test engineers have been preparing
for the A340 BLADE flight evaluations, spending time in a simulator and familiarizing
themselves with the mission equipment – the most technologically-advanced to be installed
on an Airbus flight test aircraft.
The facility also houses a major regional inventory
of spare parts for Airbus A320, A330 and
A380 aircraft for airlines that have selected the
Airbus Flight Hour Services (FHS) total support
package for their fleets. SAE employs some 500
people. Its customers include the AirAsia Group,
Cebu Pacific, Indigo, Jetstar Asia, Scoot, Malindo
Air, MASWings and VietJet Air.
Air Canada and AAR sign five-year MRO
the United States, effective immediately. The
‘Norwegian UK’ (NUK) subsidiary was set up in
2015 to allow Norwegian to build on its growing
long-haul operations by accessing bilateral
Leisure charter carrier Small Planet Airlines
is further expanding its presence in Germany
– the airline signed contracts with German
tour operators FTI Touristik and DER Touristik
Deutschland and this way secured the topfour
German tour operators as its clients. Since
2016, Small Planet Airlines Germany is also
cooperating with leisure travel giants TUI and
will act as a standby unit, mitigating the
risk of flight delays due to unforeseeable circumstances.
Germany utilized 4 Airbus A320 aircraft with
180Y seats. According to Small Planet Airlines
CEO Kristijonas Kaikaris, the airline sees tremendous
growth opportunities in Europe’s
only proves that our efforts to obtain the
Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC) paid off. Upon
starting our operations in Germany, we have
gained trust from our business partners and
passengers in regional airports. Now is the time
to enter Germany’s major airports.”
Dusseldorf (DUS), Hamburg (HAM), Hannover
(LEJ) will become the new hubs of Small Planet
Airlines Germany. Beginning with winter 2017,
take off to popular Greek and Spanish destinations
from Dusseldorf and Hamburg. The passengers
will also have an opportunity to travel
from Leipzig to the Greek islands of Crete, Kos,
Rhodes, and the Canary Islands. Most of the
planned flights are already booked by the major
tour operators.
British Airways has become the first airline to introduce high-tech remote-controlled devices
to push back aircraft across its short-haul operation. The airline is modernizing its operation to
maintain and further improve punctuality for its customers. In partnership with Heathrow, the
eco-friendly Mototok tugs will allow British Airways staff to prepare aircraft for departure more
efficiently. The airline is the first commercial operator to deploy the devices across multiple aircraft
stands. The equipment, used to move Airbus short-haul aircraft, replaces traditional diesel
tugs, allowing a single ramp agent to push an aircraft backwards from the gate remotely. Emissions
free and capable of moving planes with precision, five Mototoks are currently in operation
across 25 stands at Terminal 5. They were integrated into the operation in August, and more
than 100,000 customers have benefited from smoother departures already.
The world’s first self-flying taxi, the Volocopter X2
Photo: Volocopter
Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Residence saw a world first as a new two-seater self-flying taxi made
its ‘proof of concept flight’. According to a government statement, the self-flying taxi will “be
used for the world’s first self-flying taxi service set to be introduced by Dubai’s Road and Transport
Authority (RTA)”, with passengers being shuttled across the city in the pilotless vehicle.
Plans for the taxi were first unveiled at The World Government Summit in Dubai seven months
ago. It has been developed and built by Volocopter, a German manufacturer of autonomous
air vehicles. In a statement from Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum,
Crown Prince of Dubai, he commented that: “After the remarkable success of the first driverless
metro in the region, we are glad to witness today the test flight of the Autonomous
Air Taxi. This is another testament to our commitment to driving positive change. We are
constantly exploring opportunities to serve the community and advance the prosperity and
happiness of society.”
Michael Rudolph, Head, Aviation Regulations and Safety, Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, is
quoted as saying: “This is a something that has never been done before. We are so happy that
this happened in Dubai. From a DCAA perspective, this proof-of-concept flight makes history
and we are proud to be a support entity,” while also adding that the drone was monitored by
a new drone tracking system newly implemented by the DCAA to ensure the utmost safety.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors
of the RTA the taxi “has a variety of unique features that include top security and safety
standards, and multiple redundancies in all critical components such as propellers, motors,
power source, electronics and flight controls. It is also fitted with optional emergency parachutes,
nine independent battery systems, and a battery quick-charge and plug-in system,
which takes two hours to reach full charge in the prototype version, a time that will be significantly
reduced in the production version.”
The taxi will be powered by clean electricity, with the current prototype having a maximum
flight time of 30 minutes as a speed of 50kph, while it has a top flight speed of 100kph. It is
understood that the taxi will be integrated with public transport systems in Dubai, including
Dubai Metro, Dubai Tram, public buses, marine transit modes and taxis.
JetBlue will become the first airline to introduce
Airspace by Airbus on the A320 Family,
following an agreement unveiled at APEX
Expo. JetBlue customers will experience this
newest A320 Family cabin aboard JetBlue
aircraft starting in late 2020. Robin Hayes,
President and CEO, JetBlue commented: “The
Airspace cabin is aligned with our efforts to
create an experience as comfortable as your
own living room. We are looking forward to
our continued partnership with Airbus. The
launch of the new Airspace by Airbus interior
will take JetBlue’s commitment to customer
experience to the next level.”
