LIVING UP TO OUR LEGACY
Throughout the 2016-2017 school year, we celebrated with
great delight the 50th anniversary of Sandia Prep. We started
with a wonderful flag-raising ceremony that was much the
same as the manner in which this school first opened in
1966. We were grateful to have our school founder, Barbara
Young Simms, her husband Dr. Albert G. Simms II, and
Sandía School original alumna, Ellen Ann Lembke Ryan ’41,
join us for the ceremony. These three wonderful people were
instrumental in the founding of this school, and we owe them
a huge debt of gratitude.
There were several other celebrations that took
place during the year. These events gave us the opportunity
to reflect on the work of so many people in the past. Their
hard work and many sacrifices make it possible for so many
young people to benefit from the experience of being part
of this extraordinary learning community.
My, what incredible experiences our students have
enjoyed this past year!
We are proud of our students and faculty for the
many accomplishments achieved throughout this milestone
year. In the classrooms, on the courts and fields of play,
on the stage, and out in the community, our students
demonstrated themselves to be worthy of great praise.
They brought back to the school academic honors, State
Championships, theater and music awards, and the
appreciation and respect of those they worked with and
competed against. Our students and our faculty are, indeed,
living up to the high standards that were established by our
founders and all those who came before us.
It is because of all of you who continue to support
the School with your time, talents, and treasures that we are
able to provide our students with the quality programming
and the possibilities to stretch themselves and reach for their
full potential. It is because of your generosity that we can
achieve our mission of providing a joyful learning experience
that ensures “remarkable opportunities for intellectual
and personal growth within a challenging and balanced
program.” We are so grateful.
As we look forward to the next 50 years, we are
resolute in our commitment to make great strides in the work
that we do here at Sandia Prep. It is a rapidly changing world
into which our children will travel, and we must do all that we
can to provide them with the knowledge, critical and creative
thinking skills, and interpersonal skills that will ensure their
success as contributing citizens of this nation and of the
global village.
As part of our commitment, we are undertaking
an effort to increase our endowment over the next five and
ten years. As I am sure you understand, the function of the
endowment is many fold, but the most important function
is that it secures our future. When Sandia Prep celebrates its
centennial anniversary, I hope that those who are here will
look back and consider all the work we have done to build
this school. I hope they, too, will live up to the legacy of
generosity.
Bill Sinfield, Head of School
FIFTY YEARS
AND COUNTING
Mission The joy of
learning and living is at
the center of all we do.
Sandia Preparatory
School provides
remarkable opportunities
for intellectual and
personal growth within a
challenging and balanced
program. As an extension
of our families, Sandia
Prep's diverse community
inspires students to find
their academic focus,
talents and creativity.
“I can’t imagine a
better place to spend
my formative years.”
Uyen-Phuong Nguyen ’15
Teaching is in his blood. Coming from a family of teachers and administrators, it’s not
surprising Mr. Brian Tregembo found his home in front of a classroom. “I get to spend my
day talking about books and words and the way they make people feel; I feel pretty lucky to
have a gig like this.” It’s not only the subject matter that Mr. Tregembo says inspires him. “I
spend every day surrounded by energetic, idealistic, passionate people -- and I mean both
the kids and the faculty. Where else does one get to spend so much time with people who
are constantly dreaming about how to make the world a better place?”
Mr. Tregembo’s love for teaching was first sparked by his love for coaching. He says he’s been
coaching for a very long time, and he believes coaching and teaching go hand in hand. Mr.
Tregembo has taught full time at Prep since 2003, but started as the Boys C-Team Basketball
coach in 2000.
Mr. Tregembo is a New Mexico native and has spent his entire life here, with the exception
of his four years in college. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing with a minor in
English from Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin.
In May 2019, Uyen-Phuong Nguyen ’15 will graduate with
a degree in Computer Science and Economics from Brown
University.
Known as U.P. to friends, the proud Sundevil was active with
Sandia Prep’s Outdoor Leadership Program, so when she read
about Brown University’s BOLT (Brown Outdoor Leadership
Training) program, she happily applied. The ’15 Prep grad now
leads the 31-year-old organization which provides leadership,
mentorship, and outdoors exploration for Brown University
students.
It’s evident in the way he teaches and interacts with his students that there is a mutual
admiration and respect. “At the end of each year, I always remind my kids that words and
feelings are going to last a lot longer than anything else they learn at school. The formulas
and the dates might fade over time, but the way we treat each other and communicate with
each other, and the way we make each other feel, will always be a big part of life.”
When she’s not taking classes, U.P. serves as a brand
ambassador for the outdoor company, Merrell. She also enjoys
hiking, running, and training/competing for Brown’s taekwondo
team.
2
U.P. appreciates her time at Sandia Prep and said her
experience “shaped me into who I am. I can’t imagine a better
place to spend my formative years. The relationships I’ve built
here have lasted well past the final bell that rung at the end
of the Senior Countdown, and the education that I received
has more than prepared me for the midterms and finals that
awaited me at Brown. All I had to do was think of Suding or
Polansky and I knew that they, among others, have given me all
the tools I need to succeed. If I could do well in their classes, I
could do well in college.”

Dean C. Hines ’81 is a scientist at the Space Telescope
Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. He is the
Team Lead for the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI),
which will be launched on the James Webb Space
Telescope in the fall of 2018. The instrument will allow
him and other astronomers to investigate: the very
earliest stars in the universe; how galaxies form and
evolve; how stars and protoplanetary systems are
formed and evolve; and the nature of planets orbiting
other stars as well as those in our solar system.
Dean previously worked at the Space Science Institute
as a Senior Research Scientist; the University of Arizona
as an Assistant Astronomer and Research Associate;
and as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Astronomy
and Physics at the University of New Mexico.
Dean has a Ph.D in Astronomy from The University of
Texas at Austin and a MSc in Physics from the New
Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. When
asked about his Prep experience, Dean said, “Science
was always my love, and the teachers at Sandia Prep
were always challenging and encouraging. In 8th
grade, Mel Merit pushed me hard and started me
on my path to college at New Mexico Tech. Paula
Degenhardt, perched atop the back of her old metal
chair, taught me how to integrate piles of facts into
broader connections. And Orel Phillips gave me a
lasting foundation in mathematics. Finally, through his
history classes, Ron Briley taught me the humanity that
all scientists should emulate. These foundations have
all been invaluable in my career as I investigate the
mysteries of the universe.”
“These foundations have all been invaluable in my career as I investigate the mysteries of the Universe.”
- Dean C. Hines ’81
Kelly Schiabor Barrett ’05 is a PhD level molecular biologist who took an interesting job more
than a year ago. Kelly is a Quality Analyst at Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits in San Diego. “Craft
brewing is like a big science experiment. Creating our product requires the precise combination
of many ingredients across multiple steps. Our lab is filled with tools you would expect to see in a
biotech laboratory. We are collecting mountains of data each day to help brewery operations run
smoothly. We also use this data to help the company innovate and expand. It’s been great working
for a growing company that invests in scientists like me.”
Kelly has a PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of California, Berkeley; graduated Cum
Laude from Duke University in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Economics
with a Certificate in Genome Science; and studied Competitive Strategy and Game Theory at
The London School of Economics and Political Science.
“I hold a
special place
in my heart
and attribute a
portion of my
personal and
professional
successes
to my prep
experience.”
Alex Gerber ’99
Alex Gerber ’99 began working in commercial real estate
while he was a junior at Southern Methodist University.
“Post 9/11, the job market in DFW was not great, so I
wanted to make sure I had a leg up on a career before
finishing school.”
After SMU, Alex developed more than three million square
feet of shopping centers in Texas and Oklahoma. In 2009,
he co-founded Cobalt Real Estate Services, LLC and acts as
the COO of Cobalt with offices in DFW, Austin, San Antonio,
and Houston. He also serves as the chairman of the board
of BBGB Commercial Real Estate which manages and owns
commercial real estate throughout Texas. Alex continues to
have business ties to home, providing consulting services
to Albuquerque based Titan Development for their Texas
assets and serves as President for TST Realty LLC.
Alex and his wife Tierney, live in San Antonio with their
two boys, Holden, 4 and Preston, 2. In addition to Alex
coaching his son’s tee ball team, the Gerber family enjoys
running, swimming, biking, skiing, hunting, and fishing. Alex
competed in the 2016 Ironman U.S. Championships and
plans to compete again in April. He was recently accepted
to become a USAT Level 1 Certified Triathlon Coach and will
provide free coaching to wounded warriors and/or former
military. He also qualified for the Olympic Distance Triathlon
Nationals and will compete in Nebraska this summer.
Our ’99 grad values his Prep experience and recently made
his first gift to Sandia Prep’s Annual Fund. “I hold a special
place in my heart and attribute a portion of my personal
and professional successes to my Prep experience. I valued
the curriculum, exposure, diversity, structure, and the Prep
“family.” It is with great pleasure that I contribute to the
fund in hopes it can impact a student similarly. My boys will
attend a private school in San Antonio with similar values,
and as a parent I strive to provide them with the best
opportunities possible. Having been at Prep, my standards
are high, and it is difficult to find a comparable school.”
It’s no surprise that Ms. Sarah Wilson lists these as her favorite hobbies:
being outside, hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, gardening, and
traveling to different places. She has been a staple of Sandia Prep’s Outdoor
Leadership Program and,
of course, an integral
part of the science and
geology curriculum.
“I am a fortunate person
because I live what I teach.
Through many summer
courses, connections with
professors at UNM, and
my own travels I have
experienced first-hand
many of the topics I cover
in my geology classes.”
Students in Ms. Wilson’s
classes are often out
in the field in order to
experience what they are
learning. She feels it is
one of the best parts of
teaching. “Watching a
student finally put all the
pieces together and have an understanding of a concept is always a moment
to cherish as a teacher. Being a lifelong learner is also a huge part of being a
passionate teacher.”
Ms. Wilson earned her undergraduate degree at the University of New
Mexico and worked on her master’s degree at the New Mexico School of
Mining and Engineering. She also spent many summers taking courses in
different areas of science, most of which were geology focused with many of
hours of field work.
Ms. Wilson first came to Prep as a parent; her son Bryan graduated from Prep
in 2009. We are thankful she decided to become part of the science faculty
and continually share her passion for geology with our students. She has
spent countless hours with students inside and outside the classroom and
says some of her best Prep memories are being out in the Ojito Wilderness
with her ninth-grade students “traveling through geologic time.”
5YEARS
CELEBRATING
The community came together on the Sandia
Prep campus to celebrate the School’s 50th
Anniversary. Alumni from coast to coast
participated in a classroom crawl, spending time
with favorite faculty in spaces across campus. All
guests were treated to live music by Vanilla Pop
in the West Gym, a silent auction, and buffet.
endowment
The mission of Sandia Prep’s endowment is to support the people, programs,
and activities of the school in perpetuity. Over the years, growth of the
endowment through investment return and charitable giving has enabled the
school to build faculty excellence, launch new academic programs, provide
tuition assistance and support a wide range of important needs.
The minimum gift to establish an endowment is $25,000.
In 2016-2017 two new endowments were established to support student
research and outdoor leadership.
Odyssey Scholars Program
Intrigued by the notion that a curious and industrious student can take a deeper
look at a lingering passion, Sandia Prep grandparents Stuart and Jane Wilson
endowed the School’s new Odyssey Scholars Program. This program gives
students some time and space to look deeply into a topic or an experience
that holds their interest, possibly their future. Student scholars who are chosen
through an application process will make connections globally with experts
in their field of interest. Our goal is to raise a minimum of $100,000 for this
program endowment, and the Wilsons’ initial gift of $30,000 is a fantastic
beginning to this effort.
Outdoor Leadership Program Yurt Endowment
Doctors Paul and Marilyn Duncan, parents of alumni Lisa ’98 and Patrick ’01,
and active Camping Associate parents in their own right, have made it possible
for the Outdoor Leadership Program to sponsor an annual yurt trip for senior
Camping Associates. It was Paul who suggested in 1996 that we try using the
yurts located up near Cumbres Pass, Colorado as a special winter trip for our
CA’s. The yurts became so popular that the OLP faculty created a five day Senior
CA Yurt trip. In all this time, the Duncan family has not only made the needed
reservations for the yurts but has also paid for the use of them. The family’s deep
commitment to Sandia Prep’s unique traditions and programs have allowed
many senior CA’s to benefit from this unique experience.
In keeping with their desire to see future generations enjoy the OLP yurt trips,
Paul and Marilyn generously contributed a leadership gift $15,000 to establish
an endowment that will fund the annual rental of the yurts. Grateful alumni,
parents, and parents of alumni collectively contributed an additional $12,075 to
bring the fund balance to $27,075.
