The Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
On January 15, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who fueled the Civil Rights
movement in the 1960s and paid the ultimate price for his leadership. In the words of his widow,
Coretta Scott King, this holiday commemorates Dr. King's "great dream of a vibrant, multiracial
nation united in justice, peace and reconciliation.” There are many opportunities for families to
carry on Dr. King's legacy, including reading and discussing books written about him. My Brother
Martin by Christine King Farris and My Daddy, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by Martin Luther King, III
both paint a beautiful portrait of this leader from his family's perspective, making it easy for
children to relate to this great historical figure.
Three Movies That Inspire Kids To Change The World
Children have an innate desire to make the world a better place. Why not foster that desire this
January by watching inspirational movies as a family? Animated feature Fern Gully (1992) invites
us into a beautiful rainforest landscape where a human helps the fairies who inhabit the forest
save their home from a logging company that threatens to destroy it. Live–action feature Free
Willy (1993) tells the story of Jessie, a boy who befriends an orca named Willy and ultimately frees
him from evil theme park owners who want to kill him. Disney–Pixar feature Wall–E (2008) shows
us the distant future when a polluted planet Earth can only be saved by the efforts of kind robots,
Wall–E and EVE.
What is Your Health & Fitness Plan?
Everybody needs a good health and fitness plan.
Many times, it’s the simplest adjustments--and
sticking to them over time--that add up to the
biggest results for the whole family. We’ve put
together some easy ways to boost your family’s
health in 2018 and beyond!
Cook (or not) for high-impact nutrition!
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, the
nutrition they offer comes down to whether
you cook them or consume them raw. Cooking
produce can destroy some nutrients, while
enhancing others. For example, to get all the
available vitamin C that apples, berries, and other
fruits contain, eat them raw, including the peel.
While baking fruits will destroy most of the vitamin
C, the fiber and other nutrients like vitamin K remain mostly intact.
Some veggies become more nutritious when cooked. For example, steaming carrots will increase
their available beta-carotene, which turns to vitamin A in your body. In addition, pairing carrots
with a source of healthy fat, such as avocados, nuts, or olive oil, helps your body actually absorb
fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K more easily.
There are tons of guides online that tell you how to cook or eat raw produce in ways that
preserve the most nutrients. But, getting the nutrition part down is only half the battle, of course.
The other half is enticing kids to eat the produce they’re not excited about. One way is to add
raw vegetables to fruit smoothies, so that the sweet, tangy flavors mask the “yucky” bitterness of
the veggies. Likewise, cooked vegetables can be pureed and combined with hummus or other
condiments to make delicious dipping sauces.
Free your inner animal and get fit!
Your family’s fitness routine is about to get awesome and effective. By using the animal
kingdom as your inspiration, your strength, agility, and coordination will reach a whole
new level. Warm up with some donkey kicks by kicking one leg,
then the other, straight behind you. You can do this from
a standing position or on all fours. Have everyone make
a hee-haw sound while you kick to raise everyone’s
energy level.
Next, move on to more strenuous movements. Doing the
crab walk will provide a total body workout. Start by sitting
on the floor. Place your hands behind you and your feet
flat on the floor in front of you. Then lift your hips as high as you can and
“walk” forwards, backwards, and sideways!
Now, start moving your body upward by leap frogging.
Crouch down and then spring off the floor, jumping as
high as possible and landing a few feet in front of your
starting position.
Finally, shark swims are the perfect cool-down. Balance
on your left leg and reach in front of you with your left
hand as you raise your right leg parallel to the ground.
Reach your right arm above your head to make the
shark’s fin. Then, switch to balancing on your right leg and holding your left arm
above your head!
avalanche
Slime Activity
Avalanches are one of nature’s most
interesting phenomena. An avalanche
happens when layers of snow begin to
dislodge and slide down a hill or mountain.
But watch out! When an avalanche
happens, you don’t want to be anywhere
nearby! Why not create your own pretend
play avalanche from the safety of your
living room? All you have to do is whip up
a batch of slime and let it slide!
In a large bowl, dissolve 1/2 teaspoon of
borax in 1 cup of hot water. In a separate
bowl, whisk together one container of
white school glue with 1/2 cup of water
at room temperature. Stir in two drops of
blue food coloring and 1 tsp of white or
silver glitter. Once the borax mixture cools,
add the glue mixture to it. Wearing rubber
gloves, use your hands to squish and
knead the slime--kids love this part!--until
the slime firms up and reaches the desired
consistency.
Once your slime is
ready, create an
inclined surface
with a piece of
scrap wood or
cardboard, or find
a large rock. Then
let the avalanche
slide down the
“mountain”!
recipe Icicle Pretzels
Match
the Halves
Ingredients:
1 package blue candy melts
1 package white candy melts
1 package large pretzel sticks
1 cup blue sanding sugar
1/2 cup white sanding sugar
Instructions:
Melt the blue candy melts in a small saucepan. Dip the pretzels in the
melted candy, leaving about three inches uncovered. Immediately, roll
the pretzels in the blue sanding sugar. Lay the pretzels on a baking sheet
lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for 10 minutes. In a separate
saucepan, melt the white candy melts. Remove the pretzels from the
refrigerator. Hold each pretzel upright and use a spoon to drizzle the
melted white candy over the tip. Allow the candy to drip down the sides.
Before the white candy hardens, sprinkle on the white sanding sugar.
Return the pretzels to the refrigerator for 10 more minutes before serving.
streamer
Fun
Three Fun Things to
Do With Streamers!
Purchase a set of
disposable party
streamers or gather
up old hair ribbons,
silk scarves, or strips
of cloth. Then, get
the family together
to enjoy these three
activities!
Spell out everyone’s
name in the air. Hold
a streamer in front of
you and use it like a
make-believe pen to
“write” huge letters!
Go on a helicopter
ride, by holding your
streamers above your
head and spinning
around in a circle!
Jazz up a classic
game of tag, by
taping three streamers
to each player’s
back. Then, the
person designated
as “it” will attempt to
pull off the streamers.
The first person to lose
all three streamers
becomes the next
“it”!
