The Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.
On January 15, we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who fueled the Civil Rights
movement in the 1960s and paid the ultimate price for his leadership. In the words of his widow,
Coretta Scott King, this holiday commemorates Dr. King's "great dream of a vibrant, multiracial
nation united in justice, peace and reconciliation.” We can learn more about his legacy through
TheKingCenter.org's events, resources and artifacts on nonviolent change, and archive of
"dreams” submitted by people of all ages and walks of life.
Three Inspirational Must–Reads for the New Year
Self–empowerment is always easier with the right resources. Here are three books for 2018 and
beyond! 1) Stephen R. Covey's 7 Habits of Highly Effective People helps us eliminate mental
barriers to success. For example, offer "win–win” solutions to interpersonal conflicts to improve
your relationships. 2) In The Happiness Project, author Gretchen Rubin shares personal stories to
help us adopt our own good habits. For example, identifying "freebie clutter” and "clutch clutter” in
our homes can raise awareness of objects that deplete our energy. 3) Gary Keller and Jay
Papasan tell us in The One Thing that the key to achieving more is to "go as small as possible.” In
other words, concentrate on one goal.
Recipe: Banana Fig Skillet Crisp
Ingredients:
3 large bananas, chopped
1⁄4 cup regular rolled oats
1⁄4 cup chopped macadamia nuts
2 Tbsp shredded coconut
1⁄2 cup butter
2 Tbsp sugar
2 Tbsp rum
2 Tbsp honey
1 tsp grated fresh ginger
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1 cup dried figs
2 cups coconut ice cream
Instructions:
In a medium–sized skillet, cook oats and macadamia nuts over medium heat until the nuts turn
light brown (about 3 minutes). Add the coconut and cook for another 3 minutes. Add the sugar,
half of the butter, and ginger, and stir until the butter is melted. Transfer the mixture to a bowl and
set aside. Next, using the same skillet, add the bananas, sugar, and cinnamon, and cook until the
bananas soften (about 5 minutes). Then add the rum and honey and stir the bananas gently to
coat them. Spread the oat mixture over the bananas and serve with a scoop of ice cream.
With Three of the Coolest Life Hacks!
Sometimes, making the simplest adjustments--and
sticking to them over time--will get you the biggest
results! We’ve put together three of the coolest
hacks so that you can better manage your health,
time, and mind throughout 2018 and beyond!
Hack #1
Easy Detox
Staying fit and healthy is a lot easier when we
eliminate toxicity from our systems. Toxic build-up
results from exposure to environmental pollution
and can result in symptoms like unexplained
fatigue, difficulty losing weight, and even sensitivity
to certain fragrances. To detoxify safely without
resorting to extreme methods like juice-only
cleanses or periods of fasting, start with weekly
purifying soaks. All you have to do is draw a hot
bath and add a handful of Epsom salt and five
green tea bags. Soak for at least thirty minutes to draw impurities out through your pores. If
baths aren’t your thing, dissolve a teaspoon of Epsom salt in freshly brewed green tea. Once the
solution is cool, pour it in a spray bottle and spray it all over your skin. After thirty minutes, rinse off
in the shower under cool water.
Hack #2
Sharper Focus
Getting on the internet is always a risk, especially if we have a long list of important online tasks
to complete. The most disciplined among us can still get distracted by the sheer variety of
information available to us. Before we know it, hours have gone by wasted. Fortunately, even if
your will power is lacking, you can still keep yourself from visiting time-wasting sites by installing
the SelfControl app or StayFocused app on your internet browser. All you have to do is set
parameters for the sites you need blocked and the time frame for which you want the restriction
to occur. Then, boom! You won’t be able to access them until time’s up! Don’t worry, though.
When it switches off, you can browse away to your heart’s content!
Hack #3
Speedy Morning Routine
How much time do you spend every morning
deciding what to wear to work? Have you tried
coordinating outfits the night before only to
run late, yet again, the next day? The problem
might be your wardrobe itself, especially if the
garments that make up your work wardrobe
are drastically different from one another in
terms of fit, cut, and style. You’ll have a harder
time coordinating ensembles and they’ll be
more difficult to put on and take off. Save up
to ten minutes every morning by eliminating
some of the guess work. The next time you shop, choose two or three items that fit well and
are easy to get on and off. Purchase more of these exact same items, varying the colors and
patterns. Voila! You’ll save time and look great every day. Bonus points if you find "buy one, get
one free" discounts!

beginnings, like these three 20th century events that
continue to shape North America!
On January 15, 1974, Happy Days premiered on ABC.
Years after it became a hit TV show, the leather jacket
worn by actor Henry Winkler in his portrayal of the
character “The Fonz” was displayed temporarily at the
Smithsonian Museum!
On January 17, 1949, the United States got its first
Volkswagen Beetle, a new arrival from Germany. The
“Bug,” as drivers
affectionately call
this model, went on
to become a highly
popular vehicle in
the ’60s and ’70s
