Millis Football Repeats
Division 8 Championship
By Christopher Tremblay
Coming into the season, Millis Coach Dana
Olson didn’t expect to repeat as Super Bowl
Champions, but he did know he had a group of
talented athletes returning. When the Mohawks
lost their season opener, things didn’t look good,
but the squad regrouped and went on a tear,
winning 11 consecutive games to cap off the
season with their second Super Bowl victory in
as many years; this time at Gillette Stadium.
Millis took home the Division 8 Championship
handing Hoosac Valley their only loss of
the season in a rout 37-0.
“This win was a little more gratifying than
last years. It was easier, as they knew what was
The kids were super focused and ready for Hoosac,”
Olson said. “We beat them up in all three
phases of the game; the team kept their composure
They represented their town with dignity, and
town should be ecstatic.”
Over the last four seasons,
Olson has guided the team to a
37-11 record while capturing four
straight South Sectional Titles, 3
consecutive Tri-Valley League
Championships and two Super
Bowl victories. Senior quarterback
Bryce Latosek was 8-12 for
164 yards passing, connecting on
three touchdown passes and ran
for another. Last year in the Division
4A Super Bowl victory the
senior was 18-30 for 310 yards
and 4 touchdowns. Latosek has
tossed 65 touchdowns over the
past two seasons, including 35
this year.
Millis went into the half with
a 24-0 lead scoring on all four
first half possessions. Raymond
Hilaire was the first Mohawk
to reach the end zone on a 37-
yard touchdown pass from Lsatosek.
Dominic Zonfrelli added a
6-yard run, Chris Edwards had
a 32-yeard field goal and Andrew
Brooks connected with the
Millis quarterback on a 50-yard
touchdown to close out the half.
Latosek would add a 10-yard
touchdown run and connected
again with Brooks for a 14-yard
score to round out the scoring.
On the ground, Kurt Hopkins
rushed for a 185 yards on
25 carries and despite not getting
into the end zone his dominant
running set up the Millis passing
attack. Hopkins’ 185 yards were
the largest total allowed by the
Hurricanes to a single rusher all
season long.
“We took what was given
to us. Kurt established the run
which opened up the passing
lanes and Bryce took advantage
of that,” the Mohawk Coach
said. “They (Hoosac) scored
76 points the week before and
scored 500 points on the season
an average of 47 per game.
Shutting them out was a testament
to our defense; one that is
top notch, but gets overlooked
because of our offense. They’re
probably the best I have ever had
in my coaching career.”
In the win, Millis not only
shut down Hoosac’s dominant
run game but outplayed the Hurricanes
in just about every facet
of the game. Millis had 21 fists
downs to Hoosac’s 7; out rushed
the Hurricanes 225 – 121, passed
for 164 yards holding Hoosac to
60 while the Hurricanes also lost
two fumbles.
Millis Project 351 Ambassador
Gives Back to Community
By J.D. O’Gara
He’s been a Project 351 Ambassador
since this past spring.
Joseph Scolpinetti, a freshman
at Millis High School, was nominated
by Maureen Knowlton,
Millis Middle School principal,
at the beginning of 2017, in his
8th grade year, to be an ambassador
for Millis for the Commonwealth’s
Project 351. Scolpinetti
joined 8th graders across the
state in a leadership position
where they would work on service
projects that included kindness,
compassion, humility and
gratitude.
Scolpinetti most recently collected
89 canned goods and
$250 in donations for the Millis
Food Pantry. He conducted the
food drive at the Middle School,
and collected for the Millis Food
Pantry at the Millis High School
Football team’s Superbowl championship
game at Gillette Stadium.
“I never knew how much I
could impact my community before
I became a part of Project
351,” says Scolpinetti. “It has
been a wonderful experience,
and I am proud and honored to
do it again next year.”
The student’s first large service
project was a yard sale he
held at his home. He collected
$520 dollars from that, using the
funds to purchase food for homeless
veterans from BJ’s. Secondly,
Scolpinetti held a clothing drive
for Cradles to Crayons, which
resulted in a truckload of donations.
Millis Historic Commission Meets with GAF to
Encourage Preservation
On December 14th, the Millis
Historical Commission met
with a representative of GAF at
the Millis Town Hall. The commission
hopes to work with the
company in saving most or all
of the historic structure, built in
1889, at 60 Curve Street, as the
building is being considered by
the company for demolition. The
GAF representative indicated
that the company might be willing
to work with the town, cost
permitting considering cleanup
of the site, to preserve some of
the structure. Participants in
the discussion made suggestions
about a possible request at next
Town Meeting to re-zone the
property in order to attract more
interest in the property by prospective
businesses.
Treat the symptom, or treat the person?
At The Balanced Path Wellness
Center in Medway, clients
can expect an approach that
not only identifies root causes of
their issues, but that goes beyond
Western medical approaches to
examine and improve their overall
function and well-being. Cynthia
Meeske, LICSW, CRMT
and Paul Gerst L.Ac. Acupuncturist
& Natural Health Practitioner
have combined their unique
experience and techniques to effectively
address mind, body and
spirit.
Paul Gerst L.Ac. is a licensed
Acupuncturist and Natural
Health Practitioner practicing
for over 20 years. With his skill
in the use of Neuro-Tapping
and AK Techniques: Neurolink,
NET (Neuro-Emotional Technique)
and Nutrition Response
Testing, he’s helped many people
overcome difficult-to-treat,
chronic health issues. A Certified
Professional Mediator and certified
Meditation Trainer, Paul
has taught classes to the general
public and other practitioners for
over 10 years. A published author
and speaker, Gerst has been
featured on radio shows, medical
conferences and has produced
his own cable television show,
“Health, Naturally.”
Cindy Meeske has practiced
in the mental health field for 18
years and has seven years’ experience
as a Reiki practitioner.
Cindy’s eclectic approach with
clients of all ages combines Cognitive
Behavioral Therapy with
mindfulness, meditation techniques
and energy work.
“There is a place for each type
of modality depending on what
people need,” says Meeske.
The Balanced Path Wellness
Center is the realization
of Meeske’s vision of bringing
different modalities together.
Meeske’s and Gerst’s different
tools and experience offer clients
a new depth of options.
“We can refer to each other,”
she says. “Someone might come
to me for therapy issues, but
maybe Paul can help them with
something I can’t. We can come
at it from different angles, and
they can benefit from that.”
“It’s a round table approach
to health care,” says Paul, “and
there’s a comfort in knowing the
person you’re referring to and
how they work.”
Gerst explains that the Western
approach to medicine tends
to look at the mechanical, while
he looks at function. “When the
function is interrupted, or diminished,
a number of the things on
the outside of the body can happen.”
The way to get to the root
of a problem, he says, is to understand
all the causes of a disease
and the signs they manifest
in the body and in the spirit.
Getting to know their clients is
how both practitioners work best.
“We’re both adept at reading
people,” says Gerst. His own assessment
might look at “posture,
color of skin, expressions of the
face, the tongue, body shape,”
while Meeske’s considers psychological
manifestations of problems.
“People come in with real layered
issues, and my paperwork is
asking for all of their medical diagnoses,
their complaints, fettering
out all our different systems
in the body,” says Gerst. Often,
he says, a patient will note that
his treatment has resolved an
issue they didn’t even mention.
“A patient will say, ‘my allergies
are better, what did you do?’
And I’ll say, ‘why didn’t you tell
me you had allergies?’ That further
validates what we do, the
idea that you’re not treating a
disease, you’re treating a person,”
says Gerst, who offers both
individual as well as more cost-effective
group sessions. “A Patient-
Centered vs. a Disease-Centered
approach,” he says, “is going to
help (people with chronic health
issues) far more than going on
medications.”
Meeske turned to energy
medicine when she became disenchanted
with trends she saw
in mental health medicine. She
didn’t believe in diagnosing and
medicating patients too soon.
Reiki resonated with her, because
“I was always a believer that our
energy fields hold the physical,
mental, emotional, and spiritual.
Say we have an emotional issue,
and as a result, there’s a physical
ailment that goes with it. We
need to treat the body as a whole
energy to (treat it). (Energy) connects
all things,” she says. Meeske
uses a “hands-above” approach
to Reiki for the comfort of her
clients who may not want to be
touched.
Gerst, too, found that his career
path veered from traditional
western medicine. “The more I
learned about western medicine,
the less I wanted to be a part
of it,” he says. “Although, there
are some things they can do
that nobody else can do, such as
emergency, surgical and genetic
medicine, they treat chronic disease
poorly.”
Gerst finds a reward in helping
patients resolve issues. “If you
can identify what they’re doing
that they shouldn’t be doing, and
what they’re not doing that they
should, it’s amazing how many
times the body will heal itself,
when people were told by western
medical doctors they’d have
to live with it the rest of their
lives.”
Meeske finds a similar satisfaction
in her work, creating a
rapport and safe space to facilitate
her clients on their journeys
toward healthy relationships, fulfilling
lives after depression, and
dissipation of symptoms of such
issues as PTSD. “I can see that
progression, and that’s rewarding,”
she says.
Millis Fund to Launch Annual
Fund Drive
By J.D. O’Gara
What does it mean to help
your neighbor?
Organizers of the Millis Fund
know it as being there to help
your neighbors in their time of
need. In fact, that’s just why the
Millis Fund was created. The
small nonprofit has helped over
400 families out of critical financial
crises, due to such issues as illness,
accidents, and family issues,
since it was begun 23 years ago,
says Brooks Corl, who is entering
his 19th year as treasurer for the
organization.
Established in 1994, the Millis
Fund was created by volunteers
from four houses of worship in
Millis –St. Thomas the Apostle
Parish, Ael Chunon Congregation,
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
(which is now closed) and the
Church of Christ, Congregational.
The fund is supported through
private donations to provide
emergency financial aid to Millis
residents, for such items as rent,
utilities, medical costs, fuel, clothing
and other emergency needs.
“The Millis Fund helps Millis
families with financial emergencies
- usually arising from
something unexpected and shortterm,”
says Corl.” It’s everything;
it’s rent, it’s medical, it’s utilities
– when utilities become futilities.”
Corl adds that many events
can contribute to a sudden emergency
need.
“It’s not hard for an illness,
an accident, or some other sort
of financial emergency or family
problem, things that are generally
very much unforeseeable, to
tip the scales,” he says.
Corl points out that some
founding principles of the Millis
Fund are complete confidentiality
for the family needing help,
that the fund pays the creditor
owed, that it does not help any
family more than once per year,
(and rarely would it support any
one family more than three times
overall,) and that The Millis Fund
is designed to relieve temporary
financial emergencies only, not
chronic needs.
The nine members of the
Board of Directors meet about
four or five times a year to plan
the fund drive, create the materials
and review the applications.
The annual mailing is also
donated, so just about all of the
funds donated to The Millis Fund
benefit Millis residents. Board
members take care to personally
contact each applicant.
Corl says the fund helped
about 16 families in town last
year, always by paying the
creditor(s) directly rather than
giving money to the applicant. At
its onset, the Millis Fund helped
about 8-10 families a year, but the
number of families, in the teens,
has remained steady in the past
few years.
“The average need has continued
to rise a bit year to year. Living
in general has gotten more
expensive, even for a small town
like Millis,” says Corl.
This month, the Millis Fund
holds its annual drive, and then
on the second Sunday in February,
“Souper Sunday,” a soup
bowl is literally passed through
places of worship to gather contributions
for the fund.
Millis residents can apply for
assistance with a simple, one-page
application, up to once a year.
These are available at the Millis
Senior Center or the Church of
Christ (Congregational) at 142
Exchange St., says Corl, neither
of which is affiliated with the organization.
If you would like to help your
fellow residents in need, you can
send your donation to:
The Millis Fund, 142 Exchange
Street, Millis, MA 02054.
The fund is a 501 (c3) organization
and will provide a letter
of thanks, which could serve as a
receipt.
Yoga are powerful yet regulated
from within, individually.
A person grows at their own
pace. That’s what makes it so effective.
Whether you or a loved
one need to break a persistent
Living Healthy
Dry Eye Syndrome
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
If you find yourself using artificial
tears often, like when you
are checking e-mail or going
outdoors for a run, it may mean
you have a disease called Dry
Eye Syndrome.
Dry Eye Syndrome, also
known by the medical name
keratoconjunctivitis sicca, is a
condition in which there are insufficient
tears to lubricate and
nourish the eye. Tears are necessary
for maintaining the health
of the front surface of the eye
and for providing clear vision.
People with dry eyes either do
not produce enough tears or
have a poor quality of tears. Dry
Eye Syndrome is a common and
often chronic problem, particularly
in older adults. This is even
more common these days, with
our harsh winters and dry cold
air.
With each blink of the eyelids,
tears are spread across the
front surface of the eye, known
as the cornea. Tears provide
lubrication, reduce the risk of
eye infection, wash away foreign
matter in the eye, and keep the
surface of the eyes smooth and
clear. Excess tears in the eyes
flow into small drainage ducts,
in the inner corners of the eyelids,
which drain in the back of
the nose.
Dry eyes can result from either
inadequate tear production
or poor quality of tears.
Inadequate amount of tears –
Tears are produced by several
glands in and around the eyelids.
Optical
Shop
On-Site
Tear production tends to diminish
with age, with various medical
conditions, or as a side effect
of certain medicines. When the
normal amount of tear production
decreases or tears evaporate
too quickly from the eyes (wind,
dry environment) symptoms of
dry eye can develop.
Poor quality of tears – Tears
are made up of three layers: oil,
water, and mucus. If the tears
evaporate too quickly or do not
spread evenly over the cornea
due to deficiencies with any of
the three tear layers, dry eye
symptoms can develop.
People with dry eyes may
experience symptoms of irritated,
gritty, scratchy, or burning
eyes, a feeling of something
in their eyes, excess watering,
and blurred vision. Advanced
dry eyes may damage the front
surface of the eye and impair vision.
Treatments for dry eyes aim
to restore or maintain the normal
amount of tears in the eye
to minimize dryness and related
discomfort and to maintain eye
health.
What causes dry eyes?
The majority of people over
the age of 65 experience some
symptoms of dry eyes.
The development of dry eyes
can have many causes. They include:
Age – dry eye is a part of
the natural aging process. The
majority of people over age 65
experience some symptoms of
dry eyes.
Excellent Eye Care for the Entire Family
Gender – women are more
likely to develop dry eyes due
to hormonal changes caused by
pregnancy, the use of oral contraceptives,
and menopause.
Medications – antihistamines,
decongestants, blood pressure
medications and antidepressants
can reduce the amount of tears
produced in the eyes.
Medical conditions – persons
with rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes
and thyroid problems are
more likely to have symptoms
of dry eyes. Also, problems with
inflammation of the eyelid margin
(blepharitis), inflammation
of the surfaces of the eye, or
the inward or outward turning
of eyelids can cause dry eyes to
develop.
Environmental conditions –
exposure to smoke, wind and
dry climates can increase tear
evaporation resulting in dry
eye symptoms. Failure to blink
regularly, such as when staring
at a computer screen for long
periods of time, can also contribute
to drying of the eyes.
If your house uses dry heat or
a wood burning stove, you are
at a higher risk as humidity will
be down and evaporation of the
eye tear film increases.
Other factors – long term use
of contact lenses can be a factor
in the development of dry eyes.
Refractive eye surgeries, such as
LASIK, can cause the same.
How are dry eyes
diagnosed?
Dry eyes can be diagnosed
through a comprehensive eye
examination and testing of the
quantity and quality of tears
produced by the eyes.
How do we treat dry
eyes?
One of the primary approaches
used to manage and
treat mild cases of dry eyes is
adding tears using over-thecounter
artificial tear solutions.
Dry eyes can be a chronic
condition. The primary approaches
used to manage and
treat dry eyes include adding
tears, conserving tears, increasing
tear production, and treating
the inflammation of the eyelids
or eye surface that contributes to
the dry eyes.
Adding tears – Mild cases
of dry eyes can often be managed
using over-the-counter artificial
tear solutions. These can
be used as often as needed to
supplement natural tear production.
Preservative-free artificial
tear solutions are recommended
because they contain fewer additives
that could further irritate
the eyes.
Conserving tears – An additional
approach to reducing the
symptoms of dry eyes is to keep
natural tears in the eyes longer.
This can be done by blocking
the tear ducts through which the
tears normally drain. The goal is
to keep the available tears in the
eye longer to reduce problems
related to dry eyes.
Increasing tear production –
Prescription eye drops that help
to increase production of tears
can be recommended, as well as
omega-3 fatty acid nutritional
supplements like fish oil and flax
seed oil.
Treatment of the contributing
eyelid or ocular surface inflammation
– Prescription eye
drops or ointments, warm compresses
and lid scrubs, or eyelid
cleaners may be recommended
to help decrease inflammation
around the surface of the eyes.
More advanced treatment
for dry eye syndrome: Recently,
Xiidra (lifitegrast) has been approved
for treatment of dry
eye syndrome. Xiidra works by
blocking a certain protein on
the surface of cells in your eyes.
This protein can cause your eyes
to not produce enough tears, or
to produce tears that are not the
correct consistency to keep your
eyes healthy. Restasis (cyclosporine)
is another medication
available. Restasis is a prescription
eye drop that helps patients
increase their eyes’ natural ability
to produce tears by reducing
ocular surface inflammation that
contributes to dry eye syndrome.
What are some steps
one can take to reduce
symptoms of dry eye?
Remember to blink regularly
when reading or staring at a
computer screen for long periods
of time.
Get a humidifier at work and
at home, particularly during the
dry winter months.
Wear sunglasses outdoors,
particularly those with wrap
around frame design, to reduce
exposure to drying winds and
sun.
Use nutritional supplements
containing omega-3 fatty acid
like fish oil and flax seed oil.
Dry Eye Syndrome is very
common. Our center and ophthalmologists
have state of the
art equipment to diagnose and
treat many eye problems, including
dry eyes. With a full time
A Year in Review: Medway 2017
By David Pasquantonio
It was a busy year in Medway,
said Michael Boynton, Medway’s
town administrator, as he
reviewed the town’s 2017 highlights
and accomplishments, but
it was also a good year.
Perhaps the biggest news, and
the item with the most future financial
impact, was the final approval
of the expansion of the
Medway Exelon plant on Summer
Street. This will result in an
estimated $3.8 million annual
payment, in lieu of taxes, to the
town starting in FY 2019. Boynton
said that the town is looking
at minimal staff expansion,
instead slotting money towards
various education and infrastructure
needs, along with residential
tax relief.
The $10 million Route 109
redesign project is finishing up
another year. Although some of
the more complex work has been
completed, there’s still plenty to
come in 2018, including work at
two Main Street intersections, at
Franklin and Holliston streets. “I
would say that there have been
no surprises,” said Boynton, adding
that the town has worked
hard to minimize delays.
Traffic has ramped up on
other key streets, including Village
Street, as drivers seek alternative
routes. Boynton said
that the town has ramped up
traffic enforcement as a result.
New speed limit signs on Village
Street have sprung up in the past
few weeks. Beyond the ongoing
Shown is Michael Boynton, Medway Town Administrator.
Route 109 project, improvements
were made to many local roads,
including sidewalks at Saddle
Hill Road, in efforts to enhance
road and pedestrian safety.
The fire department added
four personnel while continuing
its move towards providing Advanced
Life Support services in
its ambulances. Four additional
hires will start in the department
on January 1, thanks to a Staffing
for Adequate Fire and Emergency
Response (SAFER) grant,
Boynton said.
The police department bid
goodbye to four retiring officers:
Lt. William Boultenhouse,
Det. Donald Grimes, Officer
David McRoberts, and Officer
Richard Simard. Lt. David Mc-
Sweeney and Sgt. John Meincke
were promoted, and the department
added four graduates.
The Medway Oak Grove
Urban Renewal Plan received
the needed local and state approvals
for the Medway Redevelopment
Authority to begin work
on the “bottle cap lots” and a
few other adjoining parcels. For
those unaware of why this project
has such an interesting name,
here’s some information from
the town’s website: “The Bottle
Cap lots derive their name from
a 1920’s marketing promotion by
Clicquot Club, which awarded
small parcels to customers with
winning bottle cap lots. There
were originally approximately
1,018 Bottle Cap lots with an
average size of approximately
1,600 square feet and dimensions
of approximately 80 feet by
20 feet. The ownership of many
A Step Forward,
with a Look Back
As 2018 begins, Local Town Pages took
a journey at the issues and
accomplishments at the forefront of
both Medway and Millis.
of the lots has been consolidated
over the years, but the configuration
of many small, irregularly
shaped lots with multiple owners
remains a significant obstacle to
redevelopment of the area.”
In development news, in May,
the Zoning Board of Appeals
granted a comprehensive permit
for Timber Crest Estates,
which will add about 150 units
of rental-affordable housing to
the town. In August, the board
granted a permit for Glen Brook
Way, which will add another 48
units, and Boynton said that this
brings the affordable housing
total to about 7.2% of the town’s
housing stock. The town also
continued work towards final approval
of Salmon Health’s Willows
at Medway, the 57-acre,
200-unit adult retirement community
slated for Village Street.
At the fall town meeting, voters
approved a comprehensive
playground plan for Choate Park
and Oakland Park and improved
tennis courts for the middle
school. The plan was the result
of much hard work from the
Evaluation of Parks, Fields, and
Recreational Areas Committee,
Boynton said, adding, “EPFRAC
did a wonderful job.” Work will
commence in the spring.
In Department of Public Services
news, after former DPS director
Thomas Holder resigned
in late 2016 to take a position in
Wayland, deputy director Dave
D’Amico was named director,
and Barry Smith, the former
water and sewer superintendent,
was named deputy director.
In the spring, Medway unveiled
an upgraded partnership
with Cleargov.com, a website
that uses snappy graphics to
provide a snapshot of the town’s
budget, population, and median
home prices, among other stats,
and allows residents to compare
how their town stacks up against
similar municipalities.
The town said goodbye to a
longtime building. In April, selectman
voted to raze the former
St. Joseph’s Men’s Club building
behind Town Hall and the
fire department, with plans to
turn the ensuing space into additional
parking. The building was
deemed a structural hazard, and
mailings to the listed club trustees
were returned by the post office.
Boynton has been the Medway
town administrator for
about three and half years, and
previously held stints in Mendon,
Sutton, and Walpole.
A Year in Review: Millis 2017
By David Pasquantonio
The biggest issue in 2017
in Millis, and certainly the one
most discussed by residents, was
the new school, but there were
many other newsworthy items
and accomplishments. Town
Administrator Michael Guzinski
and Selectman James McCaffrey
reviewed Millis’s 2017 key happenings
in a recent interview.
On December 8, a groundbreaking
ceremony marked the
official start of construction for an
elementary school to replace the
aging Clyde F. Brown Elementary
School. Voters approved an
override at the spring town meeting,
and reaffirmed that decision
at the fall town meeting. The
project was delayed due to citizen
concerns and a few lawsuits, but
was given the go-ahead after the
November meeting. Clearing of
the site, including the former 6.4-
acre Town Park, began almost
immediately. The Massachusetts
School Board Association will reimburse
the town for about $20
million of the estimated $51 million
project. Construction will be
completed in 2019.
Guzinski and McCaffrey said
that although there was divisiveness
among residents concerning
the project, in the end, they
hoped that the high level of civic
engagement will carry over into
other areas, like volunteering for
boards and committees or regularly
attending more meetings.
Residents approved a plan to
create a stormwater utility to pay
for compliance and maintenance
costs of meeting more stringent
EPA regulations on stormwater
runoff, containment, and management.
The owners of each of the
approximate 4,000 land parcels in
town will pay into the utility.
One of the biggest events in Millis in 2017 was the groundbreaking of the new Clyde F. Brown Elementary School, which took place on December
8th. The Town voted twice on the hotly contested override, overwhelmingly supporting the new MSBA-supported construction.
“All communities in the Commonwealth
will have to find a
way to either absorb the costs of
developing a program, or find a
new way to pay for it,” Guzinski
said. McCaffrey added that while
sometimes Millis waits for new
programs to be “tried and true”
before the town adopts them, in
the case of the stormwater utility,
Millis is proactively at the
forefront.
The separation of the town’s
public safety departments into
two buildings was completed
after the fire department fully
took over the building previously
shared with the police department,
which moved into its own
facility in 2016. McCaffrey said
that the meeting room in the facility
has seen extensive use, as
have the meeting spaces at the
library and town hall.
The active adult community
at Glen Ellen has received a
number of approvals, with the
next phase of the project being a
proposal to hook into the town’s
existing sewer system rather than
having an on-site treatment facility.
McCaffrey and Guzinski
noted that some potential road
work on Orchard Street, among
other areas, has been delayed
pending that outcome, as there
would be little sense in repaving
roads only to have them torn up
again for the planned Toll Brothers
community.
Other developments in town
have seen action, including the
continued building of residences
at South End Farm and the clearing
of land in preparation for an
assisted living facility on Dover
Road. The new Tractor Supply
Company store on Main Street
was the biggest new retailer in
town.
The Department of Public
Works had a busy year, including
some key road work on Village
Street, the completion of the Veterans
Memorial outside of Town
Hall, and improved access for the
Life Experience School. The latter
two projects were delivered
with minimal outside aid, an
example, McCaffrey said, of the
department continuing to deliver
cost-effective local solutions.
The police department added
three experienced officers to the
force, an outcome possible after
a previous town decision to withdraw
from the Commonwealth’s
civil service system, thus allowing
departments to hire officers
based on their own criteria rather
than a state ranking system. The
fire department finished up training
as part of a move to providing
Advanced Life Support services
for ambulatory care.
No recreational or medical
marijuana facilities started up
in 2017, although the issue saw
much debate and planning. Millis
issued a moratorium on recreational
marijuana establishments
as the town waits to see how regulations
surrounding the Commonwealth’s
vote to approve
marijuana play out. McCaffrey
and Guzinski said that the town’s
most prudent approach was to
issue a moratorium. One medical
marijuana facility has obtained a
license to open a facility along
Main Street towards the Medway
line.
The Millis girls’ varsity soccer
team won the state Division
4 championship, and the varsity
football team won the state Division
8 championship.
In May, local landmark Bob’s
Family Restaurant was destroyed
by a fire. And a trail camera
caught the image of a bear wandering
through town in August.
Guzinski started in late March
as the new town administrator,
replacing Charles Aspinwall, who
had taken a similar role in Canton
in 2016. Guzinski was the town
administrator in Douglas for 13
years before taking the position
in Millis, and had also worked in
Rowley and Blackstone.
Generous Community Rises to
the Challenge to “Stuff the Bus”
By: Marjorie Turner Hollman
It all started with an idea.
Ray Auger, My FM’s Mr. Everything,
and host of the Morning
Show on Myfm101.3 &WMRC
1490AM radio, told Tom
McAuliffe, owner and manager
of the stations, that he wanted
to do a special promotion. The
idea? Have a toy collection for
Christmas, and fill the container
provided at the toy collection
spot. Simple concept, it’s been
done before, for a worthy cause.
McAuliffe agreed, and noted,
“We just got a new station vehicle,
a retired ambulance, so I
said, ‘Sure.’ But Ray said, “I was
really thinking about trying to fill
a bus.’”
And thus began the “Stuff
a bus” toy drive that took place
December 2, planned as a 30-
hour marathon toy drive in the
parking lot of Target in Milford.
McAuliffe and Auger started out
at 6 a.m. that Saturday morning,
planning to stay with the bus till
noon Sunday. McAuliffe thought
they might be lucky enough to
get 200-300 toys, but with the
added power of social media, the
toy drive took on a life of its own.
The station obtained an initial
$2,000 in corporate sponsors
for the toy drive, and throughout
the weekend, McAuliffe and/
or Auger went into Target with
money donated from sponsors
Chinese Restaurant
508-376-8868
and had ‘shopping sprees,” which
they broadcast live on their Facebook
page. They continued their
regular programming on the
radio, with quick check ins from
the radio station about how the
drive was doing, but McAuliffe
marveled at the response they
got when they went live on Facebook
for their shopping sprees in
Target.
“Social media was amazing,”
Auger recalled. “The Facebook
live shares went through the
roof—we had fun with it.” He
continued, “Our whole staff
came down, volunteers showed
up to help us collect and stack the
toys, and to help with the shopping
sprees. I admit I was building
up sympathy (for staying up
all night) but the truth is, we had
a blast. We had hand warmers,
pillows, blankets, and a lot of
people came to see that we were
all right. People brought us food
Megan even came down with
bacon, eggs and an electric fry
pan to make us breakfast, and we
got ready to do it all over again
till noon Sunday.”
During the event MyFM
101.3 continued to encourage
donations, which they broadcast
over social media as Facebook
live shopping sprees. When all
was said and done, Auger figures
they collected about 3,000 toys,
about $60,000 worth of toys,
which were donated to the U.S.
Marines Toys for Tots. Auger
noted, “We had to get Tony
Gallo of Gallo Moving and Storage
to come over to help collect
all the toys. We gave the Marines
a heads up about the success of
the drive, and Lance Corporal
Mike Shea just kept shaking his
head, saying they’d never had
such a response like this.
McAuliffe says they are already
making plans for next year.
“It was one of the most amazing
things we’ve ever done,” he
said shortly after the event, still
somewhat groggy from lack of
sleep. “I’ll catch up on sleep by
January,” he laughed. “We had
planned to stuff the bus with the
toys and join the Milford Santa
Parade but there were just too
many toys, so we took a few of
the stuffed animals and stuck
them in the bus and headed
over to join the parade that Sunday
afternoon. So many people
stopped us along the parade
route to thank us and tell us what
a great thing this was. There are
so many worthy charities out
there. This was like a scene out
of the movie It’s a Wonderful
Life.”
Reflecting on the entire event,
McAuliffe said, “You know, we
don’t do this for the headlines,
but by the time we saw how people
were responding, we wanted
to reach out to be sure people
knew what had happened. The
best thing about owning a local
radio station is that I can do what
feels right. Local radio is still
making a difference.”
Millis Lions Club Had a Busy December
Held Frosty 5K, 48th Senior Citizen Holiday Dinner
& Honored 50-Year Member David Noon
The Millis Lions Club had a
busy December in 2017.
On December 3, The Millis
Lions Club held their first annual
Frosty 5K run/walk to raise
money for local Millis Lions Club
charities to support those in need
in Millis.
The race, co-sponsored by
Encompass Fitness, started at 9
a.m., with more than 40+ participants
making their way through
the back streets of town dressed
in their best and silliest holiday
attire. This year’s race winners
were C.J. Stapels in first place
with Gene Storbeck second and
Gary Pollak coming in third. In
the children’s category Noah
Dayhoff was the winner with
Ella Maher coming in second
and Dillon and Ryan Fitzgerald
tying for third. Best holiday
costume was won by the mother
and son team of Delia and Erin
LeBlanc.
On December 5th, the Millis
Lions Club had the pleasure of
celebrating Lion David Noon for
his 50 years of service in the Millis
Lions Club.
With family, friends and Lions
from Millis and many other communities,
Massachusetts Lions’
District 33K Governor, Margaret
Menard, presented Dave with a
plaque acknowledging his dedication
to the Lions and to the
community of Millis.
Noon, (a former Millis resident,
now residing in Maine),
joined the Millis Lions Club in
October of 1967. Since then,
Dave has been a dedicated and
active Lion, responsible for spearheading
many of the events and
The Millis Lions worked to host their 48 th annual Senior Citizen Holiday
Dinner on December 10 th , 2017, with help from the Millis Leo’s Club,
the MHS Art Club, MHS Band and MHS Chorus and several generous
sponsors in town.
fundraisers that have allowed the
Millis Lions to help the citizens
of Millis and others around the
world. Dave is also an associate
member of the Medway Lions
Club, helping to form that club in
December of 1982. Dave served
as Club president in 1981-1982,
was Lion of the Year in 1975
and was awarded a Melvin Jones
Fellowship, the highest honor in
Lions, in 1996. The Club honored
Dave with a Lifetime membership
in 2005.
“Dave defines what it means
to be a Lion. His dedication to
the community of Millis and to
Lionism is unmatched. He has
been an inspiration to Lions
members in this Club, and in
Clubs all over the district,” said
District Governor, Margaret Menard
(Hyde Park Lions Club).
At Dave’s side every step of
the way has been his loving wife,
Carole. In 2016, Dave and Carole
retired to Maine to enjoy the
seashore and to be close to their
children and grandchildren.
On Sunday, December 10th,
The Millis Lions Club held their
annual Senior Citizen Holiday
Dinner and the Millis High
School. This annual event of the
Millis Lions Club is held each
December and is open to any
resident of Millis over the age of
60. There is no charge for the
meal.
More than 140+ guests dined
on a delicious pork roast complimented
by baked apples and
squash, red bliss roasted potatoes
courtesy of Ed Harutyunyan,
owner of Budabings, and the
afternoon was topped-off with
delicious cake donated by Roche
Brothers.
For 48 years, this annual holiday
meal has been prepared by
the superb Millis Lions’ culinary
staff, and served by Millis Lions
dressed in black slacks, white
shirts and holiday red cummerbunds.
Assisting the Lions on
Sunday were members of the
Millis High School Leo Club,
the youth arm of Lions Clubs
Millis Lion David Noon was
honored on December 5, 2017 for
50 years of service with the Lions
Club.
International and members of
the MHS student government.
Decorations were provided by
the MHS Art Club. The Millis
High School Band and chorus
performed holiday classics and
the afternoon was concluded
with an “Elfin Raffle.”
“This is our Club’s favorite
event. We all come together to
bring joy and happiness to our
seniors…, “ said Noreen Brown,
Millis Lions Club president.
The Millis Lions would like to
extend a very special thank you to
Dave DLaferrierre, manager of
Ann and Hope, who donated a
live 7’ Balsam Pine tree and stand
for this event. The Millis Lions
decorate the tree every year and
donate the tree and trimmings to
a family in need who lives in Millis;
and to Roche Bros of Millis for
their continued outstanding support
and generosity.
C.J. Stapels was the winner of the
Millis Lions first “Frosty 5K” to
benefit residents of the town in
need.
Where there’s a need, there’s
a Lion. We believe that the world
gets better and problems get
smaller when people unite to
serve their local and global communities.
Lions help where help
is needed - in our own communities
and around the world - with
unmatched integrity and energy.
Sports
Norwood’s Entrance into The Tri Valley League Is Official
By KEN HAMWEY, Staff
Sports Writer
A new year often comes with
some change and that’s what
schools in the Tri Valley League
will experience when their sports
schedules will include a new
member.
The athletic directors and
the principals of the 11 schools
in the TVL voted unanimously
to accept Norwood as the 12th
member of the circuit. Starting
in September, Norwood will
compete in the TVL’s Large Division
and no longer be part of
the Bay State Conference.
“The addition of Norwood
to the league is a win for both
Norwood and the TVL,’’ said
Mike Grimes, the Ashland athletic
director. “This will not only
strengthen the TVL, but also
continue to increase the opportunities
for our student-athletes
in Ashland and throughout the
league.
“While coaching in Natick, I
had the opportunity to compete
against Norwood every year. I
truly enjoyed traveling there because
they were always gracious
hosts and had well-kept athletic
facilities. I look forward to working
with their A.D., Jon Longley.
He will be a great fit and a great
addition among the other A.D.s
within the league.’’
Holliston’s A.D., Matt Baker,
also regards Norwood’s entrance
as a major plus. “Lots of
positives with Norwood entering
the league,’’ he said. “This gets
us back to an even number of
teams with a perfect split for the
TVL Large and Small Divisions.
I think they’re a good fit geographically
and competitively.
I’m looking forward to the future
of our league with 12 teams and
to start new rivalries and traditions
with Norwood.
Norwood’s School Committee
got the ball rolling to leave
the BSC when it voted, 3-2, for
its athletic director to file an application
for entrance into the
TVL. The school’s enrollment
was 957 for 2016-2017 and, with
Dedham’s departure from the
BSC and subsequent entrance
into the TVL, Norwood became
the smallest-enrolled school in
the BSC.
When the move to the TVL
became official, Longley expressed
delight that the Mustangs
will be developing new
relationships and new rivalries
but he also noted that Norwood
was leaving a first-class league.
“We’re going from one excellent
league to another,’’ he said. “The
Bay State League is top-notch
but our student-athletes now will
have an opportunity to compete
against schools that are similar to
our size. We’ll be a good fit for
the TVL, in terms of geography
and enrollment.’’
Norwood’s relationship with
Dedham will remain intact, especially
in football where the
two schools have been Thanksgiving
rivals for decades. “Dedham
has been our main rival in
so many sports and now it’ll be
exciting to reunite with them
in a new league,’’ Longley said.
“Dedham and Norwood will stay
well-connected. Change often is
accompanied with apprehension
but a majority of our community
supports the move. Once we get
involved in competition, it should
be a good fit.’’
Longley previously said that
Norwood was outmatched in
the BSC and could not compete
with schools the size of Newton
North, Wellesley, Needham and
Natick. He also indicated that
a poll of Norwood coaches revealed
that 70 percent of those
responding favored moving to
the TVL.
The TVL athletic directors invited
Norwood officials to make
a presentation for admission last
September. Norwood will be the
third largest-enrolled school in
the TVL, trailing Hopkinton and
Westwood. Norwood’s entry now
gives the TVL 12 members, six
in the large division and six in the
small division.
The TVL Large Division includes
Holliston, Hopkinton,
Westwood, Norton, Medfield and
Norwood. The Small Division is
composed of Millis, Medway,
Bellingham, Dover-Sherborn,
Ashland and Dedham.
“Norwood provides great
balance to the Tri Valley, particularly
in light of Dedham’s
addition,’’ said Bellingham A.D.
Michael Connor. “Norwood will
nicely round out the Tri Valley’s
large-school division.’’
Medway High A.D. Rob
Pearl, was on board as the TVL
president when Dedham applied
for entrance into the league
and he’s pleased Norwood will
round out the membership to
a dozen participants. “To get
to 12 schools is truly a benefit,’’
said Pearl. “It will make scheduling
easier and also streamline it.
Norwood seems like a good fit,
both in terms of size and competitiveness.’’
Another A.D., Chuck Grant
of Millis, also expressed a welcoming
sentiment. “Norwood
brings a state of the art facility
coupled with a level of competition
commensurate with our
league. Their addition will enhance
our scheduling as it will
afford us two six-team divisions.
We look forward to their entry
into the TVL.’’
Lucas Giguere, Bellingham
High’s principal, was pleased
with the addition of Norwood.
“We’re excited to welcome Norwood
into the league,’’ he said.
“Their community mirrors the
other outstanding communities
we have in the Tri Valley
League.’’
Alex Olmsted Gives His All in Three Sports and in Studies
By Christopher Tremblay
With colleges looking much
more closely at a student’s academic
record as well as coaches
looking for that specific athlete
that has excelled in their sport
before offering scholarships, it
is not as likely to find that many
three-sport athletes on the high
school level as it has been in the
past. Millis’ Alex Olmsted continues
to give it everything that
he has in three sports for the Mohawks.
Olmsted has played wide receiver
and corner back for the
football team, power forward for
the basketball team and left field
for the baseball team over the
past 5 years for the Mohawks.
Originally, football was at the
bottom of the list and a sport
that Olmsted did not enjoy, but
since he started playing on the
high school level it has risen to
the top. And although football
is now his favorite of the three,
Olmsted feels basketball is where
he best excels.
Growing up in Walpole Olmsted
took to the three sports
in town because his dad (Dale)
was a coach, and it gave the two
time to bond while on the playing
fields. With his father being
the head coach of the Millis football
team Olmsted first decided
to give football a chance when he
was in elementary school, but it
was not his idea of fun.
“I tried playing football in
the fifth grade, but I was just not
thrilled with the game and didn’t
really like it, possibly because I
was much smaller than the others,”
he said. “My dad never
pushed me to play football; he
just explained the game to me
and allowed me to make my own
decision and was supportive of
whatever I decided to play.”
Despite despising football as a
fifth grader, Olmsted decided to
give it another shot three years
later. Although living in Walpole,
Olmsted decided to attend Millis
High School as a school choice,
because his father coached there.
“Once I got to Millis, I decided
to give football another try,
because my dad was the coach
there,” he said. “The first time
around I was not thrilled, but at
Millis it was different. I was not
Millis High’s three sport athlete and senior Alex Olmsted shows quiet
poise and depth as a student and athlete.
all that social, but Millis was a
small school with a big family,
and the football players accepted
me.”
Playing on the football team,
Olmsted got to know all the football
players before school started,
which gave him a bit of an advantage
once September rolled
around. As an eighth grader, he
played on a freshman team that
didn’t win a single game, but the
following year, the same team
went undefeated. After playing
for the junior varsity team as a
sophomore, Olmsted was part of
back-to-back Super Bowl Championships
on the varsity level.
“It’s crazy how we turned
things around so quickly. It only
goes to show that you should
never give up and keep on fighting,”
Olmsted said. “The only
thing I regret is not getting the
chance to play for my father (who
had left to take a job with Nichols
College); it was the main reason I
decided to go to Millis.”
Although he never got that
chance, Olmsted feels grateful
that he was part of the football
team and what they achieved
and the brotherhood of friends
he now has.
Unlike football, Olmsted enjoyed
basketball and baseball
right from the beginning. While
the two sports have not had the
success that the football team has
achieved over the past few years
he still enjoys playing the sports
with his friends and teammates.
As an eighth grader, Olmsted
was still playing basketball in
Walpole for the Metrowest team,
but when he got to high school
he joined the basketball team
there in Millis. He played for the
freshman team and junior varsity
squad before getting moved
up to the varsity team mid-way
through his junior season. While
he considered himself too small
to originally play football, Olmsted
had a growth spurt in high
school which was definitely to his
advantage on the court.
“Basketball is probably my
best sport, as I have been playing
it the longest, and when I grew
(Olmsted is 6’3”), it helped me
with my game,” he said. “Finally
getting the chance to play on a
competitive level was great.”
Last year, the Mohawks went
13-7 and advanced to the Division
4 Central Tournament
where they were got as far as the
Quarter Finals. It was here they
were sent home by neighboring
Hopedale. Olmsted is hoping
that once he is cleared to play,
he’ll be able to help the team get
back to the tournament.
“Having broken my collarbone
in the first football playoff
game, I’m hoping that I’ll
be cleared to get back onto the
basketball court soon, “Olmsted
said. “I’m more of a 6th man at
this point, but this year I’m going
to be relied on for more rebounds
and put-backs.”
Having won the Super Bowl
in football, and basketball looks
to get back to the play-offs once
again, baseball is up in the air.
According to Olmsted, the team
was not that strong last spring
and he is unsure of how good
they will be this year, but as a
senior he’s not going to let that
bother him. He’s going to go
out and play the sport no matter
what happens.
“I’m not sure how this team is
going to be this upcoming year,
but I just want to go out and
play,” he said. “I had primarily
played the infield before being
moved to the outfield, but I don’t
care as long as I’m playing.”
As his high school career is
in its final year Olmsted looks to
be having fun playing all three
sports, despite the outcome of
the seasons.
“Alex has been a role player in
all three sports and should be a
main factor in both the upcoming
basketball and baseball seasons,”
Millis Athletic Director
Chuck Grant said. “He’s a quiet
senior that leads by example
by staying active in school and
earning honor roll grades. He is
a clear example of someone enjoying
every bit of his high school
experience”

Register O’Donnell Warns
Homeowners of Deed Scam
Continuing his efforts to combat
consumer fraud, Norfolk
County Register of Deeds William
P. O’Donnell is once again
advising county residents to disregard
a direct-mail solicitation
offering them a certified copy of
their property deed for an outrageous
fee of anywhere from
$59.50-$83.
Register O’Donnell stated,
“There is a California company
that continues to send directmail
solicitations to unsuspecting
homeowners asking them to
send a check for $83 in order to
receive a copy of their deed. If a
consumer knew that the Registry
of Deeds would provide them the
same certified copy of a property
deed for a charge of only $1 per
page, plus an additional $1 for
postage, they would never agree
to pay such an outrageous fee for
service. The average price for a
mailed homeowner’s deed by
the Registry (usually two pages)
is $3.”
We thank our
clients and friends
for a fantastic
2017! We wish you
and your family joy,
happiness, and
success in the
new year!
some concerns with regards to
real estate sales and lending activity
for the month of November
2017.
O’Donnell noted, “November
real estate sales, for both residential
and commercial activity, were
off by 3% from the previous year.
A total of 1,512 property transactions
were recorded versus
1,563 in November 2016.
“Additionally, the average sale
price of residential and commercial
property for the month
was $638,120, a 12% reduction
year over year. Also, total sales
volume, again for both residential
and commercial, was $619
million, a 9% decrease from November
2016. Clearly, the limited
amount of available real estate
inventory is having a drag on
the real estate market in Norfolk
County.”
The story gets more sobering
when we look at the lending market
numbers in Norfolk County.
“As we have seen for the last few
months,” stated the Register, “the
number of mortgages recorded
during the month of November
Carolyn Chodat
Owner/Broker
decreased by a significant 28%.
Also, the total volume of mortgage
financing, for both residential
and commercial properties,
came in at $1.1 billion, a 35%
decrease year over year. There is
no question consumers are being
cautious when considering big
ticket expenses. Furthermore, interest
rates have crept up slightly,
which have proven disconcerting
to many homeowners interested
in purchasing a home.”
There was one major piece of
positive news in the area of foreclosure
activity where a total of
13 foreclosure deeds were filed
in November in comparison to
19 filings in the same 2016 time
period. However, on the other
hand, a total of 125 Notice to
Foreclose Mortgage documents,
the first step in the foreclosure
process, were recorded versus
only 52 in November 2016.
Register O’Donnell touted
the Registry’s partnership committed
with the Quincy Community
Client Testimonial to Laina Kaplan:
“Laina was such a joy to work with. We used her to both buy our home
as well as list our starter home. She was able to get the house staged,
and listed very quickly after reaching out to her. She was immediate with
her feedback from open houses and always transparent to us. Our home
had fallen through a few times but Laina always had a great attitude that
our house would sell as well as helpful information on how to make the
sale faster. I can’t thank her enough for the job she did through the roller
coaster of the home buying and selling experience.”
