5 TIPS FOR PROGRESSING TOWARDS
Alkaline Eating
by
Susan Barnes
Follow Us:
The best natural way to improving your overall health is by transitioning to
alkaline eating. Check out these 5 tips and tricks to help you get started.
sweets or drinking a lot
of coffee can start to make you
feel lethargic, fat, or ill during
the day. This is a feeling that
is unwelcome and can start
8Eating
January 2018
to get triggered due to increasing levels
of sugar and caffeine. You have to realize
these foods are acidic and are going to
harm your body’s acid-base balance. It is
essential to look at the value of alkaline.

The digestive system plays a vital role in your overall health. Read this article and learn the importance of
keeping your gut in tip-top shape.
INFORMATION ON
ACID-ALKALINE BALANCE
Let’s begin by understanding acid and alkaline’s
relationship. It starts with the pH
scale where acidic = 0, neutral = 7, and 14 =
alkaline. The body’s systems will vary when
it comes to the pH scale. However, studies
have shown it is far better to have a slightly
alkaline blood to maximize enzymes and
bacteria in your body. If your acid-base balance
isn’t consistent, you will not feel good
year-round. This is important for your lungs
and kidneys.
As the body starts to deal with an overload
of carbon dioxide, it will lead to reduced
lung functionality that isn’t ideal at all. This
goes by the name of respiratory acidosis
and will lead to things such as metabolic acidosis
(kidneys don’t produce enough uric
acid). The best way to combat this is by eating
balanced foods. If not, acidosis will lead
to issues such as arrhythmia, joint pain,
cholesterol, lethargy, immunodeficiency
disorders, chronic illness, cancer, heart
disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and more.
You can also start to deal with issues such
as ketoacidosis, liver problems, and cancer.
CANCER AND THE ALKALINE DIET
You are often going to hear cancer patients
mention the alkaline diet and what it has
done for them. Studies have shown eating
an increasing amount of alkaline foods can
help your health as a whole. It was in the
year 1931 when Dr. Otto Warburg won a
prize for his work on beating cancer cells
using alkaline. In this study, the right level
for the body was a blood pH of 7.36 instead
of 7.00 that was pushed before.
January 2018 9

Modern medicine has also stated that to
be true because cancer cells don’t survive
well in alkaline environments. Cancer
patients are immediately put on this diet
because it bolsters their chances of recovery
in the long-term. Let’s take a look
at the top five changes to make as soon
as possible.
1
SWITCH UP ROUTINE
You want to start by restructuring your
routine. It is all about beginning with a glass
of lemon water as it is going to improve your
liver’s functionality and digestion. Also, you
want to start looking at eating anti-inflammatory
foods full of alkaline. This is how you
are going to remove acid from your kidneys
and flush out harmful toxins.
2
GET A BLENDER
Yes, smoothies are a must when it
comes to your change and will make it easier
to eat alkaline greens without getting
tired. You will be able to maximize the value
of fiber with smoothies. A great blender
should be able to get through crunchier
food items and make it easier to have a
great smoothie every day.
10
January 2018

3
REMOVE THE JUNK
Don’t ruin your health by making
bad decisions. This is going to include little
habits that add up over time. You want
to remove alcohol, junk food, smoking,
and other processed foods as soon as possible.
This is how you are going to ruin
your body.
4
GO SLOWLY
You want to give your body a chance
to ease into the process when it comes to a
lifestyle change such as this one. You want
things to be sustainable, and it will take
time to adjust. You want to do it slowly and
methodically for maximum value.
5
DON’T FORGET TO RELAX
All changes are significant when it
comes to alkaline eating, but that is one
part of the equation. You also have to think
about stress and the hormone cortisol in
your body. If you are not sleeping, you are
not going to maximize the alkaline eating.
You need to get rid of the acid, and that is
going to include what you are eating. You
want to focus on minerals such as calcium,
magnesium, potassium, and sodium,
so your body is neutral when it comes to
its acid-base levels. If you don’t, there are
going to be health issues to deal with such
as cancer, osteoporosis, and other related
concerns. You need the right amount
of alkalizing minerals to stay healthy, or
the toxins will store themselves in your
fat cells. It is all about making appropriate
lifestyle changes.
NATURAL
INGREDIENTS
FOR FULL BODY DETOX
by
Michael Hall
Follow Us:
Cleansing the body is necessary as you need to remove all the toxic substances
your blood stream. Read this and learn how you can detoxify naturally.
Gone are the days when almost
everything was organic and
purely natural. Virtually everything
today is loaded with
chemicals - this includes the air
you breathe, water, and foods on our tables.
Unless you are careful and picky, you
could be ingesting toxic compounds unknowingly.
For this reason, a natural detox
is recommended to help get rid of most of
the harmful compounds from our bodies.
Luckily enough, there are plenty of natural
detox products and programs you can take
advantage of.
While detox is recommended for obvious
reasons, it can be hard on your body at
times, and even have some side effects on
your body. Nonetheless, going for natural
and gentler ways to cleanse can help take
care of such risks. Here are some of the recommended
ingredients for a natural detox.
PECTIN (GETS RID OF HEAVY METALS)
Pectin works miracles in flushing out heavy metals from the system. The compound
is found in plenty in limes, lemons, oranges, and other citrus fruits. It can also be
found in grapes, apples, bananas, cabbages, and carrots. Adding these fruits and foods
in your diet plan could, therefore, help with detoxing, naturally.
16
January 2018

2 CILANTRO
Cilantro is an efficient natural detoxing agent. It helps flush out heavy metals, lead,
and mercury from the bloodstream. The herb also packs potent antiviral and antibacterial
properties too. Most people use the herb for cooking, though it can still be taken as
a fruit juice.
January 2018 17

3 CHLORELLA
(ELIMINATES MERCURY)
Chlorella is a sea alga (fresh water) with
powerful cleansing properties. It’s a delicacy
in Japan, where many people have it
for its potent mercury removing properties
among other benefits. Researchers also
believe that chlorella helps improve your
liver’s efficiency and health, hence excellent
for good health.
4
18
BARLEY AND WHEATGRASS
Wheatgrass and barley grass provides
January 2018
an efficient way to remove toxic compounds
from the system. Both wheatgrass
and barley grass are excellent sources of
minerals, vitamins, and essential amino acids.
You can also add these to your regular
juicing ingredients.
Adding natural detoxing agents to your diet
plan is all it takes to induce natural detoxing.
Some of the natural detoxing agents used
not only flush out toxins, but also promote
good cell health and development. Doing
this also helps improve one’s quality of life.

5 CHEMICALS TO STEER AWAY FROM FOR
BETTER HEALTH
by
Susan Barnes
Follow Us:
Not sure which chemicals
to avoid to keep your
family safe? Read on
and find out the top 5
most health-damaging
chemicals to look out for
and try to avoid.
Many of the products
(meant for
human use/
consumption)
on the market
today are loaded with
chemicals. Although most
of these substances may
be safe to use, some accumulate
in our bodies, and
are extremely toxic. Using
products with some of
these chemicals puts your
health at risk. Having an
idea about these substances,
and reducing/eliminating
the use of the same
is therefore recommended.
Outlined below are
the top five chemicals you
should avoid.
1
BISPHENOL-A (BPA)
BPA is a common ingredient in most
plastic products. The chemical is widely
used in plastic food storage containers,
bowls, and lids. Canned food containers
too may have bisphenol-A as well. This
compound leaches from the plastic containers
into your food, hence easily ingested
unknowingly. The compound is known
to disrupt normal hormone levels as well
as cause many health problems.
2
VOLATILE ORGANIC
COMPOUNDS (VOCS)
VOCs are commonly found in basic
household products such as pesticides,
paint, and cleaning compounds. This increases
the risk of exposure significantly.
Although some of the volatile organic
compounds may only have short-term
health effects, prolonged exposure to the
same can cause adverse health effects,
including cancer.
January 2018 23

3 PERFLUORINATED
COMPOUNDS (PFCS)
PFCs are commonly found in some fabrics
and nonstick cookware. Perfluorinated
compounds are known to cause child congenital
disabilities and cancer.
4 TRICLOSAN
Triclosan is a crucial ingredient
in many antibacterial soaps and hand
wash. While it may not have a direct impact
on your health, prolonged exposure
to the compound often leads to
antibiotic resistance.
5
24
SOME HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS
Most detergents and other household
January 2018
cleaners contain compounds that can cause
a health concern to the consumer. Some of
these products are known to cause chemical
burns, eye irritation, skin irritation, respiratory
irritation, as well as long-term health
risks, cancer included. Due to the myriad of
health risks from using these products, consumers
are advised to stick to simple homemade
cleaners made from vinegar, lemon
juice, and essential oils.
If possible, avoid any of the mentioned
products or chemical about to avoid potential
health effects to your body. Getting rid
of these products from your house will also
protect your loved ones from the harmful/
toxic effects. Keep your family safe.

7 Natural Ways To
Conquer Heartburn
by
Michael Hall
Follow Us:
Heartburn is something that most adults will experience at one point or another.
Here are 7 natural remedies that can help alleviate symptoms of heartburn.
When heartburn strikes, it can
sometimes feel as though
there is excessive heat and
irritation within the throat,
chest or stomach area.
Sharp spasms or shooting discomfort
can also be symptoms. When heartburn
is of a chronic nature, the esophagus
can sustain damage due to a weakening
of its lining.
Ongoing heartburn is known to be a contributor
to esophageal cancer. No matter
how heartburn manifests itself in your
life, it is important to be aware of ways to
fight back. Instead of going for typical antacid
products, consider trying the natural
methods of battling heartburn that follow.
28
January 2018

Having high blood sugar levels can lead to health problems. Read this and learn how to whip up easy
salads that will help keep your sugar levels stable.

1
DO NOT EAT BEFORE BED
Heartburn can be triggered or exacerbated
by heading to bed shortly after
eating. The reason for this is that stomach
acids begin their digestive work as
soon as food is taken. Research studies
have shown that individuals who eat within
three hours of sleeping have a much
greater chance of suffering from GERD
than those who do not.
January 2018 29

2
REDUCE DIETARY CARBS
It is important to realize that carbohydrates
in their simple form are characterized
by their acidic qualities and for
their ability to provoke bloating and inflammation.
Those who do not easily digest
gluten may find that ingesting carbs
can produce additional layers of intestinal
distress. Researches have suggested that
reducing dietary carbohydrate intake ameliorates
GERD for just about everyone who
tries it, and the results can be seen in as
few as 7 days.
3
ALL IN FOR ALOE
Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory
and soothing in nature, aloe vera really
is something of a miracle. It is perfect
for bringing relief to esophageal tissue
that has been damaged. In its gel
form, aloe offers impressive pharmacological
properties, including those of
an effective antioxidant, an analgesic,
an anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic and
anti-proliferative substance.
Also, aloe vera is famous for being a
would-healing, anti-ulcer and antimicrobial
agent. These aspects of aloe may be why
it is so useful in treating GERD and similar
conditions. A research study found that all
subjects who used aloe vera each day for
a period of four weeks saw a reductions
in GERD manifestations including nausea,
heartburn, vomiting, regurgitation, flatulence,
belching and swallowing problems.
30
January 2018

4
THE BENEFITS OF LEMON WATER
Small doses of lemon mixed into water works to neutralize stomach acid and can
fight against H. pylori bacteria, a potentially aggravating factor in GERD cases. Those interested
in drinking lemon water to treat reflux should mix a single tablespoon of fresh juice
from a lemon into an eight ounce glass of water. This should be taken 20 minutes prior to
eating in order to halt the emergence of symptoms that food can sometimes bring.
5
HEARTBURN AND BAKING SODA
Stomach acid can be neutralized by
sodium bicarbonate (simple baking soda),
an effect which brings swift relief of heartburn.
In order to realize these benefits, simply
put a half to a full teaspoon of baking
soda into a full cup of warm water. Allow
the soda to dissolve before drinking. This
should be done following meals to keep reflux
at bay. The process may be repeated
every 2 hours, as needed. Patients suffering
from high blood pressure need to consult
with a doctor, however, before using baking
soda as a regular treatment for heartburn.
January 2018 31

6
THE POWER OF
GINGER AND CHAMOMILE
Ginger has long been recognized as an
effective digestive tool. It lowers inflammatory
responses and limits irritation of
the gastric system. Ginger’s phytochemical
properties help alleviate contractions
in the gastric tract known to send acids
into the esophageal space. Chamomile is
a soothing, calming influence on the body,
helping reduce reflux, pain and nausea.
Given its relaxant characteristics, chamomile
ought to be used only to deal with
stress or food-related cases of heartburn.
To achieve maximum results, use 1/2 tablespoon
of each and place in a tea strainer.
Pour enough boiling water to cover and
allow to steep with a lid on top for 10-15
minutes before drinking.
32
January 2018

7
MUSTARD SEEDS
Despite their small size, mustard
seeds really pack a healthy punch. They
are known to reduce heartburn within
mere minutes. They do this by serving
as a counterbalance to stomach and
esophageal acid. A teaspoon of organic
mustard swallowed in a slow fashion
can bring very prompt relief to
heartburn sufferers.
The ideas presented above are the best
way to begin treating a case of heartburn,
and they will generally work right
off the bat. However, those with an unhealthy
lifestyle may find that they need
additional help.
Prescription medications for heartburn
should be approached very carefully, because
they may cause more damage than
most realize, including boosting the risk
of heart attack. Over-the-counter heartburn
aids such as antacids are a bit safer,
though they usually have aluminum in
their ingredient lists. Kidney stones may
develop if such products are used for an
extended period.
In the end, natural methods are best when
it comes to addressing heartburn, and
they should be tried before anything else.
Sweet potatoes are one of the richest
sources of carotenoids, much like
carrots. Eating one ounce of sweet potato
will give you the entire recommended
daily intake of vitamin A. Sweet potatoes
are rich in vitamin C and fiber which
makes them more nutritious than regular
potatoes or yam. Yams and sweet potatoes
are not from the same plant family,
yet they are often confused. Yams are
hard to find in North American supermarkets
and what you purchase at your local
supermarket is in fact, yellow or orange
sweet potatoes.
4
GREEN, LEAFY KALE
This vegetable is tremendously good
for you. It is often used as garnish but it is
rich in iron, vitamins A and K, calcium, potassium
and omega-3 fatty acids. Dry it slowly
in an oven and sprinkle it with olive oil or
lemon juice, it is crunchy and nutritious,
whether in a salad or eaten on its own.
5
GREEN ALGAE: CHLORELLA
Chlorella is a green algae that thrives
in water, it is one of the most nutritious
foods on earth. It is loaded with vitamin A
and zinc, the latter of which is vital for the
absorption of nutrients in the human body.
Chlorella can be taken in many ways, these
include, powder, capsule or tablet form,
however, you should be mindful of the
source from which you purchase chlorella
as it is not produced in the United States.
It is advised that you source it from either
Taiwan or Korea to ensure you get a quality
product, avoid buying it from China because
chlorella from China is often contaminated.
6 WHEATGRASS
Wheatgrass has about 12,000 international
units of vitamin A in every ounce,
when it comes to being a rich source of vitamin
A, only chlorella can be placed above
it. You can grow wheatgrass seeds on your
own and use it to make nutritious smoothies.
You may also consume wheatgrass
powder. Wheatgrass also contains antioxidants
such as vitamin C as well as vitamin
E, this is good for eye health and greatly
reduces the chances that you will ever suffer
from macular degeneration.
7 Tips For A
Healthier Gut
by
Michael Hall
Follow Us:
To promote digestive health, it’s important to eat the right things. Probiotics
and prebiotics both encourage a healthy tummy. Read on to learn more.
The human body is a unique
system, and it’s all about learning
on a day-to-day basis. Researchers
have spent generations
learning about it and
every day brings something new to the
horizon leading to a change in how things
are managed. These studies include information
on the types of diets people go on
and how they exercise.
With more and more research pouring in,
a lot of focus has gone towards gut health
and knowing how it connects to the brain.
It was in the late 1990s when research
started taking a look at human health, and
its relationship with stress biology and the
connection was quite apparent. The brain
was a significant role player in how the gut
functioned and how the rest of the body
functioned as well including the gastrointestinal
tract, humoral systems, and autonomic
nervous system. However, modern
methods have started to go in reverse and
taking a look at how the guy has an impact
on the GI tract and the brain.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
GOOD AND BAD BACTERIA
The gut encompasses a wide range of microorganisms,
and these bacteria are reliant
on a positive environment. However,
this doesn’t mean all bacteria are healthy
and good for the body. It is all about knowing
what the difference is and ensuring the
good bacteria remain on top forever.
Good bacteria would encompass clostridium
butyricum as this is a catalyst for fatty
acids and pushing away inflammatory
bowel disease. It is also essential for bifidobacteria,
which are responsible for
immune responses (vitamins) and lactobacilli,
which is responsible for boosting
immunity. On the contrary, bad bacteria
encompass enterococcus faecalis, which
is seen after a surgery (infection) as the
wrong type of food is digested such as uncooked
chicken. Bad bacteria also include
Clostridium difficile, which is renowned for
doing damage after taking antibiotics. This
is why eating healthy is a must to maintain
a healthy gut.
44
January 2018

1
PROBIOTICS ARE KEY
Probiotics are essential because they
can be found through lacto-fermented
foods. These are full of good bacteria and
are simple to digest. These can be found in
tempeh, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, and
kefir to name a few.
2
USE PREBIOTIC FIBER
IN YOUR DIET
Prebiotics are also known as fermented
carbs. They are reliant on good bacteria
(unlike probiotics) and take time to digest.
They will not go through the digestive system
as quickly as probiotics. This type of
fiber can be found in foods such as dandelion
greens, leeks, asparagus, garlic, and
chicory root.
3
EXERCISE OFTEN
Gut health is reliant on the amount
of work you’re doing during the day. It is
always smart to set up an exercise regimen
and include things such as yoga. You
are going to notice a change in your health
when it comes to IBS.
January 2018 45

4
STAY AWAY FROM GMOS OR ANY FOOD WITH PESTICIDES
A lot of damage can be done to your gut health when roundup or glyphosate are
added into the equation. You want to steer away from genetically modified foods as they
are going to harm you in the long-term. These are filled with chemicals and are going to
alter your body’s health.
5
DECREASE CONSUMPTION
OF HFCS
HFCS or “high-fructose corn syrup” is not
suitable for your gut and is often found
in processed foods. You want to stay
away from HFCS and sugar as much as
possible for the betterment of your gut.
These sweeteners can do a lot of damage
and will lead to the growth of bad bacteria
(i.e., yeast/fungi). It is always smarter
to cut down on these foods as soon
as you can.
46
January 2018

6
ELIMINATE USE OF
UNNECESSARY ANTIBIOTICS
Antibiotics are necessary at times but
not all the time. It is a class of drug
that is rough on bacteria of all kind. It
doesn’t discriminate, and that can lead
to a complete change in the human microbiome,
which is a sign of bad bacteria
developing such as Firmicutes. If this happens,
you are increasing the chances of
developing obesity.
Studies have shown the animals’ microbiome
gets damaged after antibiotics are
used, and it leads to an increase in weight.
Cattle have shown to grow bigger in weight,
and the same happens to humans.
7
LEARN TO MEDITATE
AND STAY RELAXED
Stress can be damaging to the body and
brain. You have to take the time to meditate.
This is how you are going to get more
out of the body and maintain a healthier
gut. All it takes is 10-15 minutes of your
time daily.
Get the brain in gear, and you are going to
have a great gut. This is a good stepping
stone and can help your body in general.
9 Aphrodisiac Foods
TO SPICE UP YOUR LOVE LIFE
by
Susan Barnes
Follow Us:
If you are looking to improve your health as well as rev up your sexual arousal
naturally, then read on and find out the 9 best foods to boost your libido.
While their genuine effect is questionable
at best, everyone loves
a good aphrodisiac food. Even
if the food doesn’t cause any
chemical or biological reaction,
it can be a lot of fun to enjoy a Valentine’s Day
meal filled to the brim with subtext and double
entendres. To that end, here’s a great list
of foods considered natural aphrodisiacs.
Now, keep in mind that even though these
are great for any Valentine’s Day dinner
they don’t have to be kept for a special occasion.
Or at the very least, make the special
occasion that you thought it was fun, or
because it’s Thursday, or because you just
got home from work and you feel like cooking!
Even beyond the question of whether
or not they actually make you hornier, most
of these foods are easy to work with and
fairly healthy making them great foods to
add to almost any meal.
1 ALMONDS
It’s hard to find a fitness enthusiast
who hates almonds. It’s one of several nuts
that contain a high concentration of mono-saturated
fats. It doesn’t take long to
consider why the ancient people associated
the almond with fertility!
They’re shaped like testicles. Luckily,
they’re also high in fiber as well as vitamin
E. So whether or not almonds actually
boost your libido, they’re at least good for
your heart!
2 CHOCOLATE
Chocolate is the usual go-to in terms
52
January 2018
of aphrodisiacs. There are so many different
types of chocolate out there that
there’s a style for almost every taste.
Chocolate is also high in anti-oxidants,
and some studies have found that it can
help relieve the pain of menstrual cramps.
Chocolate also contains phenylethylamine,
which is a stimulant that’s known
to interact with the parts of your brain that
light up during sex. The higher the cocoa
level in chocolate, the more of this chemical
the chocolate contains. You don’t have
to go super-dark chocolate, semi-sweet
chocolate chip cookies will work just
as well.

3 PEAS
Sweet peas are a great healthy addition
to any Valentine’s Day dinner! Peas
are high in fiber as well as low in calories.
They contain the same chemical as chocolate,
which is why they’re an aphrodisiac.
4 VANILLA
Everyone loves the taste and smell
of vanilla, but did you know it’s been considered
an aphrodisiac since the times of
early man? The Mayan and Aztec cultures
would use chocolate and vanilla as libido
and performance enhancers, at least according
to some historians. Vanilla is an
incredibly easy substance to use as well
since you can get it in almost every dessert
out there. Make sure to find high-quality
vanilla if you want the healthy kind. It’s
much more flavorful, which is the real
point of any use of vanilla!
5 HONEY
Organic honey is well known to help
deal with allergies. Honey can often act as
an immunity boost since it’s generally made
of local types of pollen. This helps trigger the
body’s immune system, at least a tiny bit.
The brain responds with excitement to
honey due to its natural sweetness. That
excitement easily translates into increases
sexual energy. And of course, it’s not
difficult to think about what one could
do after dinner with some “accidentally
spilled” honey.
6 POMEGRANATE
This is a well-known superfood and
boasts a high concentration of antioxidants.
Pomegranate is often used in depression
and immune system treatments,
at least as part of a healthy diet. The fact
that pomegranates have so many seeds
has caused human cultures to connect
the fruit with fertility. This connection has
stuck around into the modern age, which
is why it’s considered an aphrodisiac. They
can be difficult to deseed, however, so try
watching the video below if you want to
avoid a mess.
7 WATERMELON
This fruit is naturally sweet, low in
54
January 2018
calories, and has a high concentration of
electrolytes. Water is great for hydration,
but the high concentration of electrolytes
helps the body utilize hydration more
quickly. If you’re drinking alcoholic beverages
or participating in a heavy activity
(which you may be doing on Valentine’s
Day for various reasons), then it’s especially
important to stay hydrated.
8 BALUT
This street food is incredibly popular
in the Phillippines, so if you’re not especially
adventurous you may want to give it
a pass. This is a duck egg that’s been fertilized,
partially developed, and then boiled.
You then eat the cooked half-developed

duck straight from the shell. While it may
not sound appetizing to some people, it’s
believed to boost stamina and the process
of eating balut - sucking the juice from the
egg first - has several sexual undertones.
9 CHERRIES
Cherries have been considered “sexy”
for centuries at this point, at least in the
western world. Cherries are also incredibly
healthy since they contain a high number
of antioxidants. While many aphrodisiacs
work questionably at best, cherries are one
of the few available foods that have been
scientifically proven to boost pheromone
production. And if you need to be told to
tie a cherry stem into a knot with only your
tongue then you need a remedial aphrodisiacs
class! Here’s a tip - maraschino cherry
stems are the easiest to do this with.
A 5-PART
WALKTHROUGH
ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF
GUT
BACTERIA
by
Michael Hall
Follow Us:
The digestive system plays a vital role in your overall health. Read this article
and learn the importance of keeping your gut in tip-top shape.
It’s only until recently that science
has started exploring
the role played by bacteria
in our digestive system in relation
to good body health.
Recent studies have revealed that these
bacteria are more influential than previously
perceived. In fact, bacteria directly
affects our brains.
The human body has ten times more bacteria
compared to human cells. It’s estimated
that the digestive tract, the habitat of most
of these bacteria, has a staggering three million
bacterial genes of close to a thousand
different species. This is like 100 times more
than our own genes. Besides being beneficial,
most of these bacteria are a necessity
for the proper functioning of the body.
The best natural way to improving your overall health is by transitioning to alkaline eating. Check out
these 5 tips and tricks to help you get started.

1
THE LINK BETWEEN YOUR BRAIN
AND THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Unhealthy bacteria could result in illness
but our bodies know enough to attack and
kill the harmful bacteria. When the “good”
bacteria are compromised, our immune
system weakens and diseases could ensue.
Studies regarding how internal bacteria
impact our health have revealed very
surprising results.
The most popular perception is that the
brain is responsible for controlling all systems
in the body. Links have been discovered
showing that the brain has an influence
on the digestive function. However,
it turns out that the influence is a two-way
traffic: the microbiota present in the gastrointestinal
tract have an influence on
brain function including motor activity,
memory, and cognition.
60
2
UNLIKELY PARKINSON’S
DISEASE CAUSE
Parkinson’s disease is known to be a chronic
and progressive ailment that affects
cognition and motor control. Neurons in
the brain that are supposed to regulate
the production of dopamine start to die.
Reduced dopamine levels in the body have
an effect on motor function, which in turn
results in tremors in the hands, head, arms
and legs, rigid or stiff legs arms and torso,
and a slow body movement. Dopamine reduction
also leads to loss of balance which
could sometimes progress to ones inability
to stand, change in voice, loss of one’s
sense of smell and sleep irregularity.
The actual cause of Parkinson’s disease
was previously not known. There is a theory
suggesting that this disorder could be
partly genetic, but the presence of this
disease does not always show any symptoms.
Environmental factors like pharmaceuticals,
pesticides and herbicides,
chronic inflammation (which could be as a
result of a combination of factors like aspartame,
poor dietary habits, stress, lack
of exercise and food additives), and other
toxins aggravate the risk of developing
the Parkinson’s disease and many other
neurological disorders.
January 2018 61

3
CURRENT RESEARCH
In a recent research, the link between
the gut and the brain were clearly observed.
The findings of the research start by saying
that: “The intestinal microbiota has an influence
on modulating behavior, neurodevelopment
and has its contribution to neurological
disorders. However, the functional
link between neurodegenerative diseases
and gut bacteria is still unexplored.
Synucleinopathies are neurodegenerative
disorders that are usually characterized by
the accumulation of alpha-synuclein proteins
around the nerve cells and glia - the
brain cells responsible for supporting neurons,
removing waste and transporting nutrition.
A-synuclein is a protein commonly
found in our brains and when one is suffering
from synucleinopathies, it occurs
that there is an over-accumulation of these
proteins. The Parkinson’s disease is in this
group of diseases.
4
ANTIBIOTICS VS. PROBIOTICS
The mice specimens that were used
in the study were conditioned to produce
an excess of the a-synuclein proteins. Scientists
discovered that administering antibiotics
aggravated the loss of motor control
and many other Parkinson’s disease
symptoms. When probiotics (gastrointestinal
bacteria) were administered to the
mice, brain activity increased and motor
function improved.
Some other groups of mice conditioned to
overproduce a-synuclein in the study were
administered with microbiota obtained
from people with Parkinson’s disease and
healthy people as well. The symptoms of
the specimen mice worsened after they
62
January 2018

were given bacteria from people diagnosed
with Parkinson’s disease. It was eventually
concluded that gut bacteria are responsible
for the regulation of movement disorders
in mice and suggested that changes in
the human microbiome could increase the
risk of suffering from Parkinson’s disease.
5
THE IMPORTANCE OF
DIGESTIVE TRACT BACTERIA
Synucleinopathies aren’t the only conditions
affected by digestive tract bacteria.
If you need further proof that there is a
connection between the brain and healthy
bacteria levels, then here you go. A 2013
research linked digestive tract bacteria to
autism spectrum disorders. The symptoms
of these disorders were exacerbated by
administration of harmful bacteria and alleviated
with an introduction of probiotics.
References to many other studies still
point to a similar connection between the
gut and brain when studying emotional instability,
anxiety, and multiple sclerosis.
Microbial changes within the digestive
tract of mice led to a change in the metabolites
in serum which resulted in the manifestation
of autism-like behaviors. The administration
of a beneficial bacterium like
Bacteroides fragilis was found to reverse
immunological, neurological and physiological
anomalies. This is a good explanation
why in some instances, autism spectrum
disorder symptoms disappear when
a kid’s diet is changed. You must avoid eating
all the junk in genetically modified and
processed foods since they disorient everything
in the digestive system and brain
as well.
11 TASTY DETOX DRINKS FOR
WEIGHT LOSS
by
Susan Barnes
Lose weight just by drinking water, juice, or smoothie. Here are 11 of the most
effective and delicious detox drinks for burning fat and losing weight!
Juicing is obviously the healthiest alternative to taking soda and other sweetened
drinks. Juice prepared by you in the kitchen using fresh vegetables and fruits is
highly nutritious, particularly when it is prepared as a smoothie. It will even aid
the body in eliminating toxins. On the contrary, store-bought juices are often
filled with dangerous additives such as preservatives, flavoring agents, and sugar.
What Is Detox?
Follow Us:
On a daily basis, our bodies are exposed to toxins through the food we eat, the air we breathe
and all the thoughts we harbor in our minds. Detoxification is a process in which the body
naturally isolates, neutralizes and gets rid of the unhealthy substances lodged in our bodies.
Some good examples of toxins are processed foods, fructose corn syrup, sugar, pesticides,
herbicides, medications, heavy metals and many other household chemicals. These toxins
tend to accumulate and find refuge in fat cells, where they could cause ailments.
1
POMEGRANATE, LEMON,
AND PINEAPPLE
The pomegranate fruit is naturally flavorful
and sweet, which make it an excellent addition
to any of your smoothies. Additionally,
this fruit is rich in anti-aging antioxidants
and also a treasure trove of minerals
and vitamins. Actually, this fruit contains a
higher antioxidant percentage than green
tea. All you have to do is add a small pineapple
piece to your daily dose and a small
lemon piece to balance out the sweetness
of other fruits.
2
GREEN JUICE
Green juices are highly sought beverages
when it comes down to healthy diets
and weight loss. There are numerous
recipes available but this one isn’t just
nutritious but also delicious. Spinach, cucumbers
and collard greens provide vitamin
A, vitamin K, cancer-fighting sulfur and iron
whereas lemon provides vitamin C, a nutrient
that aids the body in absorbing iron.
3
GREEN SMOOTHIE
This is a recipe similar to what we’ve
just discussed above, but in this case, the
ingredients are blended rather than juiced.
For the right blend of ingredients, add 1
cup of coconut water followed by a few
vegetables and fruits. This smoothie can
be customized to suit your preferred taste.
And just like any other smoothie on this
list, be sure to take this juice on the same
day you prepare it for the best nutritional
value since some of the nutrients will die
hours after being processed.
68
January 2018

4
SPICY GREEN JUICE
Different from the last two juices
mentioned above, this juice has a small
touch of ginger that improves digestion
and fights inflammation. With this juice,
almost all the ingredients are sour and alkalinizing.
You could add some maple syrup
so that your juice isn’t so bitter.
5
LEMON WATER
If you cannot harbor the thought of
preparing fresh juice every morning, this is
the detox drink for you. A major aspect of
detoxification is remaining hydrated so it
is imperative that you take water first thing
every morning to help the body flush out
any toxins it probably gathered overnight.
And to add some flavor to the water and
give it an alkaline feel, squeeze like half a
lemon into a glass of water every morning
and take it before breakfast when your
stomach is still empty.
6
FRUITY DETOX WATER
Although lemon is a perfect addition
to water, there are many other ways to
dress the water and make it more appealing.
This recipe is a perfect replacement
for popular sugary drinks and summer
cocktails. All you have to do is slice some
strawberries or kiwi fruits and put them
in some chilled carafe of water for some
hours. To give it more flair, you could add
some mint, oranges or cherries.
January 2018 69

7
CARROT, GINGER, AND BEETS
This irresistible juice will help keep your stomach full in between meals, which
aids in curbing cravings and supporting all your weight loss efforts. To prepare this
juice, you only need a few glasses of water, two carrots, a small piece of ginger, a large
beetroot and a small cucumber.
8
FAT-BURNING WATER
Vinegar is not actually what many
people think of when the word weight loss
is mentioned but it is definitely a key ingredient
in fat-burning water. Apple cider vinegar
aids in alkalizing the body, preventing
inflammation of the joints and improving
digestion. When combined with lemon,
apple, and cinnamon, you will not even
taste the vinegar so do not hesitate to try
this drink. And if it is too strong to take,
you could add some honey.
9
CUCUMBER DETOX WATER
This simple water is just ideal for
anyone who cannot deal with the acidity
of lemon water. You just have to add a few
slices of cucumber to the flavored water.
You could also add 2-3 mint leaves for a
refreshing way to get rid of the toxins.
foods you shouldn’t eat to avoid pain.
Managing arthritis is almost a
full-time job. There are many
things to do to keep your pain
levels low. Avoiding certain
medications, foods, and activities
play an important part in this regard.
Here are five foods that you should avoid
in order to relieve the pain associated
with arthritis.

1
FOODS THAT CONTAIN GLUTEN
You may have to stop eating some
of your favorite foods such as bread and
pasta when you have arthritis. These
foods contain gluten that can result in an
incredible amount of inflammation. Although
not everyone is sensitive to gluten,
the latest research shows that more than
13% of the population has some form of
non-celiac gluten sensitivity. In fact, more
than 1% of the population suffers from a
full-blown celiac disease.
But 40% of the population carries the
gene for celiac disease in them. There
are certain environmental factors that
can trigger this gene to turn on such as
illness, pregnancy, use of antibiotics,
menopause, stomach flu, and gastrointestinal
infections. The best thing is to
avoid gluten foods when you are suffering
from arthritis.
NIGHTSHADE VEGETABLES
Have you heard of the story of
Tom Brady (New England Patriot’s quarterback)?
If so, you might already know
about his super strict diet that has kept
him playing football for so long. He avoids
foods that are known as nightshade vegetables
such as eggplant, peppers, and
tomatoes. These foods are supposed to
cause inflammation.
Nightshade vegetables contain alkaloids.
They can alter the way calcium is metabolized
in the body. Higher concentrations
of alkaloids cause calcium to deposit in the
soft tissues of the body. This can result in
joint pain and arthritis over time.
3
PROCESSED FOODS
Most of the fast food joints cook
their foods in oils that are full of trans fats
with omega-6 fatty acids. Although omega-6
is good in moderation, it can cause
inflammation in the body when consumed
in excessive amounts. Fast foods have
this component in excessive amounts.
Omega-6 triggers the build-up of fibrin in
your joints.
Fibrin is used by the body to heal injuries
for a short period of time. It does
this by causing partial inflammation to
bring in the white blood cells. But when fibrin
builds up when it is not needed, pain
becomes inevitable.
4
BLACKENED AND
BARBECUED FOODS
Grilling doesn’t cause problems unless you
go for a charred look on meats and vegetables.
In fact, when you cook foods at
high temperatures over an open flame, it
releases a byproduct known as Advanced
Glycation End (AGEs).
AGEs are well-known to cause inflammation
of the entire vascular system of the
body. The latest studies reveal that people
suffering from diabetes are more affected
by Advanced Glycation Ends. These people
can suffer from accelerated heart disease
and increased inflammation as a result.
5
FOODS THAT CONTAIN
PROCESSED SUGAR
You already know that soda is bad for you.
In fact, a bottle of full-sugar soda contains
more artificial flavoring and sugar than
an individual could ingest in a week. Processed
sugars in your favorite carbonated
drinks can trigger your body to release
pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Cytokines are usually released by your immune
system in order to send healing cells
to certain areas of injury, trauma, and infection
in your body. This process is ideal
when something is actually wrong in your
body. When these healing cells have nowhere
else to go, they can cause unnecessary
pain and inflammation in the joints.
Even though diet soda is supposed to cut
down on processed sugar, it contains artificial
sweeteners that could take the place
of processed sugars. That is why it is important
that you avoid full-sugar as well as
diet soda when you are suffering from a
condition such as arthritis.
5 Nutrient Tips To
SLEEP BETTER
by
Susan Barnes
Follow Us:
Making slight changes to your diet can improve your sleep dramatically.
Check out these 5 nutrient hacks to help you get some good night’s sleep.
Many people are not familiar with
the fact that eating the right diet
can have an impact on whether
you are able to get a good
night’s sleep or not. Sometimes
it really only takes a few changes. Before you
know it, you could be sleeping like a baby.
The preferred method of improving on
sleeping problems is to find a natural solution.
When sleeping pills and other medical
solutions are used, it can have a negative
impact over the course of time. In some cases,
you may feel as if you are hung over the
following day or it could make it more likely
for you to get in an automobile accident
and it can certainly slow you down at work
and at home.
VITAMIN C FIGHTS SCURVY
According to a recent study, there
is a direct correlation between being low
on vitamin C and not getting enough sleep
at night. The study wanted to identify differences
in people’s diets who were able
to sleep a long time as well as those who
slept for a short amount of time. According
to the study, those who slept less
than five hours nightly were lacking in
vitamin C.
Believe it or not, green peppers are fully
loaded with vitamin C and it has 119 mg
per cup. An adult only requires 40 mg daily
of vitamin C. In other words, the green
pepper is the go-to choice when you want
to fight insomnia.
2
YOU NEED MORE CALCIUM
According to multiple studies, when
you are lacking calcium and magnesium,
you will likely wake after sleeping for only
a few hours and not be able to fall asleep
again. According to one study, calcium levels
are higher in the body during one of the
deepest phases of sleep, rapid eye movement
(REM) sleep. The conclusion was that
having sleep interrupted, especially when
you were in REM or REM disturbed sleep is
associated with a deficiency in calcium.
When the blood calcium levels were restored
by the research team, the test
participants were able to achieve normal
sleep patterns. The brain is assisted when
calcium is used because of tryptophan,
an amino acid that produces melatonin,
a hormone associated with sleep. Foods
that tend to be used for inducing sleep are
often rich in calcium. One green vegetable
that has loads of calcium is okra and
it tastes similar to eggplant. You will find
about 82 mg of calcium in okra for every
100 g that you eat. On a daily basis, adults
should have up to 1000 mg of calcium.
3
YOU SHOULD ADD
MAGNESIUM TO YOUR DIET
A clinical study that was randomized
and double-blind showed that individuals
who supplemented their magnesium
were able to improve their insomnia.
Many factors were improved, including
the sleep time and efficiency, onset sleep
latency, and waking early in the morning
and it may be associated with the concentrations
of melatonin, serum renin
and serum cortisol in older people. 46
senior citizens were used in a study that
either provided a placebo or 500 mg of
magnesium at random over the course of
eight weeks. One way to add a significant
amount of magnesium to the diet is to
consume Swiss chard, as it contains 81
mg in every 100 g of the leafy vegetable.
4
RBC CAN BE PRODUCED
WITH VITAMIN B12
According to a study, individuals who received
a 1.5 mg daily dose of vitamin B12
improved an issue with the sleep-wake
rhythm disorder. Vitamin B12 was provided
in the study for two patients who had
various types of this disorder. A 15-yearold
blind girl was one of the patients
who suffered from an issue known as
hypernychthemeral syndrome, or a running
sleep-wake rhythm of approximately
25 hours.
A 55-year-old man was the second patient
who had a delayed sleep phase syndrome
and he suffered from it for over three decades.
By the time the study was over, both
of the patients saw marked improvement.
84
January 2018

It’s difficult to get vitamin B12 from vegetables
but spinach does contain some significant
levels. Research done by the North
American Vegetarian Society showed that
there is more vitamin B12 in organic spinach
than conventional Spanish that was
sprayed with both pesticides and fertilizers.
This is yet another reason why organic
food is a good idea.
5
JUICING FRESH VEGETABLES
Many people enjoy the nutrient-rich
benefits of fresh vegetable juice. Vegetable
juice that is freshly pressed and consumed
should be a regular part of your diet. Many
insomniacs choose fresh vegetable juice
over their daily cup of coffee. Coffee has
been repeatedly shown by many studies
to cause insomnia, perhaps because of the
caffeine in it.
If you’re looking for a way to improve a
problem with insomnia, it is hoped that
this article provides the motivation to get
rid of the caffeine and include more vegetables
in your diet. Living a healthy life is
an ongoing process and even though you
may not see immediate results, those results
will come eventually. It sometimes
takes longer for benefits to be recognized
through a healthy treatment program
in comparison with conventional medicine
but if you are patient, those benefits
will come.
You could always use a
little help on fighting
bloating. Here are 6
yoga poses that can
soothe and relieve
belly bloat and other
digestive discomfort.
Nothing could be worse than
having a large meal that leaves
you feeling too full to do anything.
You might even swear to
never overeat again. However,
the truth is that holidays, dinner parties
and family meals mean that you will probably
feel bloated a few times in a year.
Overeating, however, is not the only reason
you could feel bloated. Eating too quickly,
eating a fatty meal, swallowing air and taking
foods like dairy and beans could leave
you feeling gassy and swollen. Despite all
your woes, here are some yoga poses that
get you rejuvenated and heal your sore
tummy in a short time.
THE KNEES-TO-CHEST POSE (APANASANA)
To perform this pose, you should lie down on a yoga mat and tuck your legs into
your chest as you continue breathing. Proceed to rest your hands on the shins, slightly
below the knees. As you breathe in, slowly pull your legs onto your chest then release
your grip to breathe out. This will stimulate the digestive tract muscles to help the stomach
proceed with digestion. Hold for 60 seconds.
January 2018

2
THE SEATED SPINAL TWIST
Sit down on your mat with your
spine straight and tall and legs completely
outstretched. Bend the left knee, ensuring
that your leg is in line with the hip joint and
the left sole firmly gripped on the ground.
Twist the body to your left, with your left
arm behind the left hip and the right elbow
against the left thigh for better stability.
Hold in this position for half a minute so
that blood flows into the digestive organs.
You can then repeat on the right.
3
THE CHAIR POSE (UTTKATASANA)
Start by standing up with the feet
being hip-width apart and the toes spread
out wide and facing forward. Cramp your
butt as you squat backward like you are
sitting on a chair. Your knees must remain
directly above your ankles. As you go lower,
get your hands above your head as you
keep them at shoulder width. Your arms
and back must make a straight line and
hold for half a minute.
4
HIGH LUNGE VARIATION
Stand with your feet close together
and hands by your hip sides. You should
then step the left foot back straight, exerting
more weight on the left toes and right
sole as you bend your right leg. As you try
to drive your arms back to open up your
chest, keep your hips facing forward. Maintain
this position for five deep breaths, return
to your original position and then repeat
with your other leg.
January 2018 91

5
THE BRIDGE POSE (SETU BANDASANA)
This position will open up your body and aid in preventing constipation. Start by laying
down on your back with the knees being at hip width. Remember to keep the soles of your
feet firmly gripped onto your mat. Now lift your hips towards the sky, clasping your hands
together beneath your body and hold for 60 seconds while making some deep breaths.
6
LEGS UP THE WALL
While this position might seem
strange, it will definitely get the blood
flowing and all the lymph back to the gut.
Lay on your yoga mat beside a vertical wall
and lie on the back with the but against
the wall and legs straight up the wall. Rest
your arms on the body as you take deep
breaths. Close your eyes and try to hold
onto this position for 60 seconds.
simple as a meal at a romantic
restaurant or a home-cooked meal
prepared for the love of one’s life.
going to depend on what aphrodisiac
foods or drinks are used, and
it has to start with a bit of research
on your part.
year it is; you have to think hard
with how it eases the body and ensures
you are in the right frame of mind during
the meal. This is how your sex drive will increase,
and there is nothing better than a
fresh meal with salmon in it because there
it will work wonders.
This is great for romance and will
help battle conditions such as heart disease.
It is also going to help with blood circulation
and relaxing the body while you
are having a romantic dinner.
REFRESHING CUCUMBER SALAD
The following ingredients are needed;
1/4 cup rice vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt,
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds and
2 medium cucumbers or 1 large English
cucumber. Peel the cucumbers to achieve
some nice green stripes, then chop them in
half and remove the seeds using a spoon.
You can chop them into thinner slices using
a knife or a food processor then place in
a thick paper towel and squeeze gently to
eliminate excess water. Mix the vinegar and
salt in a bowl, stir properly, and then add
some sesame seeds and the cucumber. Mix
everything up nicely and serve immediately.
You can enjoy this salad on a hot and sunny
day to ensure you stay cool and hydrated.
You can also add some crumbled feta
cheese and chopped onions for extra flavor.
This particular recipe can be used to make
4 servings of approximately 1 cup each.
If you feel brave enough, you can add apple
cider vinegar, okra and bitter lemon
to your salad. These additions can help to
regulate your blood sugar levels. Eating
these salads can help prevent and manage
various medical conditions such as cancer,
chronic inflammation, heart disease, diabetes
and so on.
Suffering from acid reflux? Check out this article and discover these 7 home
remedies that may cure your heartburn and save you a trip to the drugstore.
The sensation you feel in the
upper abdomen and chest areas
after you eat is known as
heartburn. The name implies
that a person feels like his or
her heart is on fire. There are many causes
for this condition. But one thing is for sure:
when it hits, you want immediate relief.
WHAT DOES THE CONDITION FEEL LIKE?
You may experience a hot irritation in
your chest, stomach or throat when you
have heartburn. It may feel like a shooting
pain or spasm at times. The esophageal
lining deteriorates when the condition
becomes chronic. If untreated in a
timely manner, it can lead to esophageal
cancer over time.
Regardless of how it feels and how often
it occurs, you need to stop the condition
immediately. Before you rush to the doctor
or try OTC medications, you should
try these effective remedies.
STOP OVEREATING
There is a muscle at the end of the
esophagus that controls the entry of food
into your stomach. This muscle becomes
weakened in the case of acid reflux. This
allows the contents of the stomach to flow
back into the esophagus. An over-indulged
stomach will put pressure on this muscle
allowing the stomach acid to push its way
up. This results in heartburn.
2
MANAGE YOUR WEIGHT
Obesity is linked to acid reflux. The
fat deposits around the stomach place excess
pressure on the abdomen. The food
you consume also plays a big part in acid
reflux. Excess body weight causes many
problems with the digestive system, including
diseases of the esophagus. Make
sure you manage the weight to get rid of
this problem.
3
APPLE CIDER VINEGAR (ACV)
Although vinegar is an acid, organic,
raw, and unfiltered ACV alkalize the body. It
stimulates the release of important stomach
acids to facilitate the digestive process. On
the other hand, unfiltered raw apple cider
vinegar contains a cloudy sediment which
has fiber, enzymes, and proteins to ease the
condition of acid reflux. Take it with a teaspoon
of honey in a cup of warm water.
4
AVOID FOODS THAT
AGGRAVATE THE CONDITION
There are certain foods that over-stimulate
stomach acids. These foods can lead
to acid reflux when taken in excess. Make
sure you consume the following foods in
moderation - milk chocolate, alcohol, fatty
foods, fried foods, coffee, raw onions, garlic,
processed fast foods, and peppermint.
Avoid spicy and acidic foods since they can
overproduce stomach acids. Hence, make
sure to steer clear of tomatoes, citrus
fruits, black pepper, chili peppers, cranberries,
red meat, dairy, and blueberries.
5
CHEW NATURAL GUM
Chewing gum increases the production
of saliva which helps reduce the acids
in the esophagus. But you need to chew
natural gums that are not sweetened with
aspartame. Steer clear of spearmint and
peppermint flavors since they can relax
the LES and worsen the condition.
6
REDUCE THE CONSUMPTION
OF SOFT DRINKS
Carbonated drinks have bubbles that explode
in your stomach and esophagus.
This places pressure on the LES. Commercial
sodas are acidic as well. Make sure
that you replace the cola habit with fresh
fruit and vegetable juices. A warm cup of
tea can boost your digestive functions.
7
CHANGE YOUR
SLEEPING POSITION
You can experience heartburn at night
due to the position of your stomach and
the pressure placed on the esophagus.
Many people who are suffering from acid
reflux have problems with sleeping. You
should raise the head of the bed by at
least six inches by placing a block underneath
the mattress. If not, you can buy a
wedge pillow that is specially designed for
this purpose.
The incline will help avoid putting excess
strain on your neck and shoulders. It prevents
pressure on the abdomen. Sleeping
on your left side aids the emptying of the
stomach. This will reduce the likelihood of
you experiencing heartburn at night. That
is why you should sleep on your left side.
