A Message from Our Cantor 

World Music Radio Program 

Hanukkah-“Maoz Tzur” 

Throughout my career in Jewish education I have realized that we can’t take 

for granted that our Jewish fellows fully understand the meaning of the Jewish 

holidays, its history and its traditions. As a Jewish educator I have learned to 

teach as if every person in my audience knows nothing about the subject. Many 

Jews celebrate the Holidays and sing Holiday songs without understanding their 

lyrics, the historical background or the meaning. 

The main purpose of the radio program is to bring awareness of the Holiday 

of Hanukkah, its historical background, meaning, traditions and highlight the 

various music renditions of “Maoz Tzur,” a liturgical poem sung on each and 

every night of the 8 days of the celebration. The focus of the program is based 

on the most famous and German melody of the “Maoz Tzur,” which goes 

back to the middle ages and Jews and non-Jews nowadays sing it. Jews live all 

around the world and in spite of having the same religion, there are still major 

differences between them such as the melody use to sing the “Maoz Tzur”. I 

chose to illustrate some of these variations at the beginning of the program to 

have the audience appreciate what other Jewish brothers and sisters around 

the world sing at the same time they are lighting the Hanukkah candles.

A Message from Our Co-Presidents 

Last week Lois Danis, Steven Scheck and I attended the USCJ Convention in 

Atlanta. USCJ is the North American arm of Conservative Judaism. There 

were more than 800 people attending, from synagogues across the United 

States and Canada. All of us attended many sessions about synagogue 

issues, and heard some wonderful Jewish speakers. We learned a lot, 

and as for me this will hopefully help me be able to do a better job for our 

congregation in my role as co-President. We should all take comfort in 

the fact that Conservative Judaism is alive and well, and that we can and 

should be proud to be Conservative Jews! 

Tuesday begins Chanukah – the Festival of Lights! Chanukah has always 

had a special place in my heart. I grew up in pre-Disney Orlando, where I 

was part of a small, significantly assimilated Jewish population. I did not 

know much about Jewish holidays, but I certainly knew about Chanukah! 

I was proud that the Jews, led by Judah and the other Maccabees, had 

somehow, against incredible odds, defeated the evil Antiochus! The 

Christian kids, of which there were a great many more than us, had 

Christmas, with presents, a Christmas tree, ornaments, Santa Claus, 

parades and all the TV Christmas shows. We didn’t have any of that, 

but we had Chanukah, with presents every day for eight straight days! 

As I recall, the size and value of the presents shrunk greatly during the 

latter days, so that by day 8 my present might be some gum and a few 

baseball cards, or something like that, but that was OK. Chanukah gave 

the Jewish kids a way to get through Christmas, because we had our own 

happy, present laden holiday! I looked forward to lighting the Menorah, 

and quickly memorized the English version of “Rock of Ages!” I think back 

on those times as joyous occasions spent with my Mom and Dad.

Chanukah is still the same festival, although I now know a little bit more 

about the spirituality part. I hope that all of you enjoy your holiday, 

and that you will come celebrate Chanukah Under the Stars with us on 

Wednesday, December 20!

A Message from Our 


We recently celebrated Thanksgiving and have entered the 

Chanukkah season. We, at Beth Torah Benny Rok Campus 

have a lot to be thankful for. 

Our Suzy Fischer ECA children, our pride and joy. We 

hear them arriving each morning with excitement and 

enthusiasm….so happy to be coming to school. 

We celebrate every Wednesday with the students of our 

Scheck Family Religious School to experience the learning 

and love that permeates the classrooms. 

To share a Bar or Bat Mitzvah with the families at our 

various services allows the members of Beth Torah the 

chance to kvell from all of our accomplishments. 

Or to see the Kadima and USY’ers in our Kettler and Levy 

Family Youth Connection converging on our youth lounge 

every week to participate in our Regionally recognized 

Chapter of the Year youth program. It is open for all our 

youth and children from 6th to 12th grade to participate 

in this exciting program. 

The Annual High Holy Days Campaign, chaired by Financial 

VP, Steven Willinger, reached its greatest heights ever 

with over $657,000 raised thanks to the response of our 

members and the challenge grant from the Hochberg 

Family. 

We appreciate our Ways & Means VP, Phyllis Sheinman, 

and her Committee, for wanting to create change and 

creating a wonderful atmosphere in which to work for 

our Beth Torah on many projects we experienced so far 

this year. 

Book of Remembrance, chaired by Marcia Frantz again 

this year, met all its goals. 

The Torah Dedication in honor of Temy & Mario “Don 

Francisco” Kreutzberger, brought over 250 participants 

to share Shabbat together with such warmth and 

celebration of joy. 

The Annual Trip…a once in a lifetime experience found 

Rabbi & Gisela Rojzman along with 45 Beth Torah 

members, traveling to the Vatican and the first synagogue 

group to have a special meeting with Pope Francis. 

FunFest 2017, a new program, brought over 300 of our 

family members together to have “FUN”…a beautiful day 

with loads of activities from games and bounce houses on 

the field, to Mah Jongg in the Nacron Chapel, Food Demo 

and Chopped Competition in the Ballroom amongst other 

Karate, dance, flower arranging and cookie decorating

programs. The special Social Action program and toy 

drive with the students of Victory Center arranged by 

our Social Action Committee was another highlight 

of the day which culminated in “Dancing With the 

Stars” in the evening. Special thanks to chairs Anne 

Marcovich, Etta Epstein, Michelle Kabak and Sheryl 

Podgorowiez, along with over 100 volunteers for 

making this day possible. Mark your calendars for 

Sunday, November 4 for FunFest 2018. 

The Shabbat Dinner with Rabbi Rojzman at the 

Kreutzberger home has continued each year to allow 

35 guests to share this most inspirational evening 

and raise lots of scholarship funds for our Beth Torah 

children. 

Shabbat Chanukkah will dedicate and inaugurate the 

use of the new Lev Shalem Siddur made possible by 

Linda and Eugene Finkin. Everyone can dedicate a 

new Siddur for just $54 in honor of an occasion or in 

memory of a loved one. 

During Chanukkah we will “kick-off” our 12th Monte 

Carlo Night on Saturday, Feb. 3. A beautiful fun-filled 

exciting evening is planned for all. 

Men’s Club and Sisterhood are always busy and invite 

you all to participate. 

As we kindle the lights each night at Chanukkah we create 

a glowing spirit for our members and friends to participate 

in all of our activities almost every day each week. Please 

join with us and celebrate together.

Chanukkah! The Festival of Lights when 

we are grateful for miracles. 

Each day, I am grateful to be able to work in a place surrounded by 

friends who create miracles on a daily basis. Often times, we are 

quick to give praises to the people that we see out front. Even I find 

myself guilty of that far too often. It’s easy to speak about how great 

our Rabbis are, or what a great job any of our professionals do. As a 

professional on staff, I can tell you we greatly appreciate the praise, 

but also know that we have a lot of help. Allow me to introduce you 

to our miracle workers. 

WAYNE KEIL 

Each day I am honored to work with Lea Cohen, Sherry Krug, Catalina 

Abello, Teri Smolken, Marla Cohen and Veronica Zalcberg. And that’s 

just on the synagogue side of things! Just across the way our miracle 

workers for the ECA include Regina Rupert, Pamela Salabi and Viviana 

Paramo. These wonderful women work tirelessly to ensure that the 

wheels are well oiled and that things run as smoothly as possible. 

They come to work every morning and manage to laugh and joke and 

have a great time throughout the day, no matter how stressful things 

get. There is a tremendous amount of work to get done by the staff. 

A new challenge awaits them each day! And like clockwork, each day 

they perform miracles. 

So instead of trying to write something ordinary, I wanted to take 

a moment to recognize the unordinary. I wanted to recognize the 

amazing staff that is often taken for granted. They are our miracle 

workers and I love them all dearly.

Dear Families, 

We approach again the end of another 

secular cycle. By human nature we 

tend to evaluate the experiences, 

opportunities, successes and failures 

we had during 2017. 

As Jewish civilians of the world we have 

several opportunities throughout the 

year to review what happened to us, 

with us and with our surroundings. We 

began our Jewish year in September 

with meaningful experiences for High 

Holy Days in our Shul. We had multiple 

and simultaneous services to serve the 

needs of our diverse members. As we 

moved along all old and new activities 

came to place from the recurring 

programs of Adult Education, Café con 

Torah, Partners in Torah, Sisterhood 

programming, lectures in English and 

Spanish, social action programs and 

Shabbat dinners as well. 

As we approach the “Festival of 

Lights” we can proudly say that we 

make every effort to enlighten the 

lives of our members and members of 

our community at large by thinking, 

planning and serving the different 

cultures around us. We wish you all 

a “Chag Urim Sameach” and may the 

light of the Chanukiah illuminate your 

lives and the lives of your beloved ones.

Dear Sisters 

Looks like we are continually running and doing, but 

don’t forget to smell the “Latkes”. 

We had one of the most special Paid up Membership 

events to date. Over 50 women and men joined us 

for food and a wonderful musical performance by 

Annie Rojzman. In her honor, we dedicated this year’s 

event to Juvenile Diabetes Research. Thanks to your 

generosity, we were able to donate over $600. 

Please don’t forget our ongoing community service 

project “Support the Girls”, by bringing in slightly used 

bras. Our hot pink boxes are in the lobby. 

Thank you so much for making me your Eshet Chayal 

this year! I was really shocked but feel so blessed to 

have all of you as my “Sisters”.

News from the Scheck Family Religious School 

Dear Families 

Shalom, it is with great pride that we summarize the 

first semester of our learning cycle. Although our 

beginning was delayed this year, every grade level has 

accomplished a lot of great things. The Scheck Family 

Religious School seeks to educate its families and 

students to live a fuller Jewish life by providing with the 

intellectual and emotional tools and opportunities to 

embrace Judaism as a way of living, a way of doing and 

a way of thinking. 

Our school is a learning community that promotes to 

create a community of learners while developing a 

mature Jewish identity built around practices of study, 

tikkun olam (repairing the world) and g’milut hasadim 

(acts of loving kindness). As such, during the first half 

of the year we experienced meaningful activities in 

the classrooms and for family education. In October, 

we shared a breakfast in the Sukkah with all families. 

In November, our K-2nd graders helped clergy lead 

Shabbat Services and hosted a beautiful Shabbat Dinner. 

Also, our 5th & 6th graders had the opportunity to visit the 

Holocaust Memorial Museum in Miami Beach and it resulted 

in a very powerful experience for students and families. 

As we prepare for Chanukah, our 3th &4th graders made 

sufganiot, while the 1st & 2nd graders visited the Kosher 

Food Bank to support other families in the community in 

need. 

As the “Festival of Lights” approaches, we are committed, all 

year round, to illuminate the life of our students as well as to 

illuminate the life of others in our community

YIVO INSTITUTE FOR JEWISH RESEARCH 

Since its founding in Vilna in1925, and its relocation to New York in 

1940,YIVO Institute for Jewish Research has documented Eastern 

European Ashkenazic culture through collection and preservation of 

records, manuscripts, books and artifacts. The YIVO archives and 

library is the largest collection of such materials in the world containing 

some 23 million items. Included are sound, music, art and theater collections, photographs, 

films, manuscripts, diaries, memoirs, personal correspondence, community and personal 

records, and more. The collection dates from the 15th century to the present, with much of 

the material available online. Areas of focus include Yiddish language and culture, Jewish 

life in Europe, the Holocaust and its aftermath, and Jewish life in the U.S. (www.yivo.org/)
