This sentiment was echoed by James Sore of
equity investment firm SyndicateRoom, one of the
panellists discussing the second topic, ‘Creating a
suitable environment for unicorns’ – the term used
for a start-up valued at $1 billion. He explained
that start-ups had historically struggled to make
progress with incumbents in implementing their
ideas and technology, but the increasing pressure
to adapt and develop meant that incumbents were
more open to interaction with newcomers.
‘The incumbents, the big existing providers, are still
around for a reason – because they manage risk,
but you also have the start-up mentality of "I can do
anything and change the world". It’s about findinging
the balance between the two,’ said Mr Sore..
GUERNSEY COMES OUT STRONGLY IN THE
WAKE OF SO-CALLED ‘PARADISE PAPERS’
Media coverage following the release of
information from files belonging to law firm
Appleby has drawn attention to the role of
offshore finance centres in recent months.
‘The release of the stolen documents is an
illegal hack and unacceptable. The sensationalist
reporting is designed to undermine the legitimate
business acts of offshore centres,’ said Guernsey
Finance Chief Executive Dominic Wheatley.
‘The coverage attempted to portray a lack of
transparency in offshore finance centres, but in
the case of Guernsey that is simply not true. Early
adoption of global initiatives such as the Common
Reporting Standard and the establishment of our
central register of beneficial ownership evidence
our long-standing commitment to global standards
of transparency and information exchange.
‘By having these standards in place Guernsey underlines
its position within the mainstream of international finance.’
INDUSTRY UPDATE
Guernsey Finance stakeholders can learn more about
the promotional agency’s future plans, as well as the
island’s relationship with the City of London, at GF’s
annual industry update at St James on 24 January.
Miles Celic, Chief Executive of TheCityUK – the
representative body which champions the UK-based
financial and related professional services industries
– is keynote speaker. He will discuss his organisation’s
work in the UK, how Guernsey’s financial services
sector fits with its remit and TheCityUK’s involvement
in positioning London and the wider UK financial
services market for a successful post-Brexit future.
Stakeholders will also be briefed on Guernsey Finance’s
plans for 2018 across its target markets and hear
analysis of the agency’s performance during 2017.

MEET THE TEAM
Emily Wild joined Guernsey Finance a little over
a year ago. Here, we find out a little more about
her and her role at the company.
Name Emily Wild
Position Events Executive
Responsibilities My role is to organise and assist
in the running of WE ARE GUERNSEY events,
conferences and seminars, and work closely
with our third-party event partners. A typical
day of mine involves liaising with industry and
suppliers, promoting the event and planning
our own events logistics from start to finish to
ensure all goes to plan.
When did you join Guernsey Finance?
December 2016.
Favourite aspect of the job? As part of the
events team, I have the opportunity to travel
regularly to manage the events on the day,
which also allows me to see different venues
off-island and connect with other event
companies and their employees.
How might people know you away from
Guernsey Finance? Outside of the office
you will find me spending time outdoors
or travelling overseas to climb a mountain!
I enjoy taking part in charity challenges
and I am deciding what to do next!
