Food
Top quality Chinese food might not be what you’re expecting on a visit to a small
island in the English Channel, but nestled on Guernsey’s east coast is China Red,
a gem of a restaurant that has been voted number seven in The Independent’s
top 10 UK Chinese restaurants, as well as the number one restaurant overall in
Guernsey on TripAdvisor.
With an impressive range of
authentic Chinese food, Dim
Sum and Chinese teas, China
Red has been a firm favourite
with Guernsey locals and visitors
alike for 10 years since it first
opened its doors in 2007.
The extensive menu offers
classic favourites such as Crispy
Aromatic Duck, Won Ton Soup,
Crispy Seaweed and Satay
Skewers, but there is much more
than your standard Chinese
menu items on offer here. The
chef has done an incredible job
of producing a menu that sticks
true to its Chinese roots while
giving it a Guernsey twist, making
the most of the fresh ingredients
available locally. As a result fresh
seafood features heavily on the
menu with mouthwatering items
such as Kung Po chilli prawns
garnished with cashew nuts,
deep-fried crispy squid with
Szechuan peppercorn salt, and
fresh local lobster with Szechuan
firecracker chillies. Local Sea
Bass, Turbot and Brill are available
either steamed with spring onions
and ginger or black bean sauce
or pan-fried with dark soya.
There’s also plenty on offer for
vegetarians with items such as stirfried
asparagus with bean sprouts
and cashew nuts, braised bamboo
shoots and Chinese mushrooms,
and pan-fried aubergines in black
bean sauce being favourites with
non-vegetarians as well. There is
also an impressive tofu section
to the menu. China Red is also
able to do an amazing 85% of
its menu items gluten free.
Those of you who suffer from
indecisiveness will be pleased to
hear China Red has a range of set
menus which boast their most
popular items, available for two,
three or four people. With all the
hard work of reading through the
menu done for you, all you need
to do is sit back and wait for the
food to be brought to your table.
