TOUR:
WINCHESTER
For those of us who plan holidays around food and drink, the pretty
cathedral city of Winchester is well worth consideration. Not only a
haven for history buffs, this ancient English capital enjoys a glowing
reputation for local produce and fine fare. After all, you don’t get voted
the best place to live in Britain without delivering big in the food stakes.
Get stuck into fine beer and
hearty food in one of the city’s
friendly pubs, or enjoy light bites
and lunches in its handful of cafés
and delis. Weary visitors can also
fuel up on-the-go at one of the
UK’s biggest farmers' markets.
Winchester boasts a range of
cuisines, including Thai, Japanese
and Spanish, as well as a Michelin
Star restaurant – The Black Rat.
No foodie tour of Winchester
would be complete without trying
its regional produce, such as the
local leaf, watercress, which grows
in the acres of beds which span
the Itchen and Meon Valleys.
The area is also famed for
the wild trout that thrive in
the River Itchen, which runs
through the heart of Winchester,
along with the River Test.
And if you work up a thirst,
look out for the Itchen Valley
Brewery at Alresford, Suthwyk
Ales at Southwick and the
award-winning Flower Pots
micro-brewery at Cheriton.
Easy to navigate on foot, and as
satisfying for the stomach as it is
pleasing on the eye, Winchester
definitely deserves to be on
your foodie hit list this year.
