AURIGNY SUPPORTS
GOAL50 IN CAPE TOWN
Aurigny is proud to be among
those in the community to support
the Goal50 charity in its invaluable
work in South Africa.
The charity was launched back
in 2010, to help the GCU Soccer
Academy in Heideveld (Cape
Flats), create an orphanage and
since then its fundraising efforts
have multiplied, supporting tens of
thousands of people.
Over the last four years,
Aurigny has assisted the
Guernsey charity with support
with their luggage allowance.
The founders, Nigel and Jayne
Pascoe, have recently returned
from their latest trip to Cape Town,
where they provide their invaluable
support through Goal50 in many
different ways.
Nigel said: ‘We are very grateful
for the support of Aurigny. On
all of our trips, we take football
kit, boots and balls and the extra
luggage allowance is very much
appreciated. Some of the township
boys play football with rags tied
up with string and so when we
bring them footballs, there is
always great excitement. Without
Aurigny’s support, this would not
be possible.’
On the latest trip Nigel and Lynda
assisted in Feeding Programmes
in the township communities,
made possible through Goal50,
where 125,000 meals were
provided last year.
The charity’s first orphanage is
almost ready for the first intake of
children. In addition, attorneys are
drawing up documents to transfer
a government owned plot of
land to Goal50 where a children’s
daycare centre is planned.
Nigel and Jayne also helped set
up a new Porridge Station in one
of the local schools. Sadly, most
parents cannot afford to give their
children breakfast and so the
children arrive at school hungry.
Over 1,000 bowls of porridge were
served during the week.
From a football perspective,
the soccer academy will be
entering the fourth tier of
South African football.
Nigel added: ‘The coaches and
players are so excited about this
new opportunity. It will raise the
standard of football in the area.’
The football academy was
formed 14 years ago by a reformed
gangster, Mario Van Niekerk.
He has over 300 children in the
school and helps to keep them
out of gangs and away from drugs.
Part of his plan was to incorporate
an orphanage under the umbrella
of the soccer school and Goal50
was set up specifically for the
funding of an orphanage and to
make this dream become reality.
Since those early days, Goal50’s
support and activities have
multiplied. The first property
was purchased in November
2014. A kitchen has also been
constructed to prepare meals for
Goal50’s Feeding Programmes.
The Feeding Programmes are
based in Heideveld, Langa, Nyanga,
Khayelitsha and the Ark Drug
Rehabilitation Centre in Eerste River.
A job creation scheme has
also been launched to help a
community where 80% of the adult
population are unemployed. 80%
of the population also take drugs.
Salaries of some of the coaches are
also provided by Goal50.
Kit and footballs are regularly
taken out. Kit Xchange collects
sports kit that is no longer needed
in Guernsey and the UK and these
are then shipped to South Africa.
Regular trips are made to Cape
Town to encourage the coaches
and to help with the programmes.
