HOLLYWOOD COMES
TO GUERNSEY FOR
THE HUB
An evening of glitz and glamour
came to Guernsey courtesy of
The HUB service, which provides
emotional support to children
and young people through the
Youth Commission.
The Hollywood-themed black
tie ball, sponsored by the Ana
Leaf Foundation, saw 170
guests dressing up in the most
glamorous outfits that befit the
world of film stars.
Jane St Pier, Chair of the Youth
Commission, said: ‘The ball
was held to celebrate the fifth
anniversary of The HUB, which
provides emotional wellbeing
services to children and young
people. Over this time it has
A member of the public’s
photo has been chosen as the
front cover of the Sure 2018
telephone directory.
The local telecoms company ran
a competition to find the cover
for its 2018 phonebook which
was open to anyone and had the
simple brief of taking a photo of
your favourite local scene. 200
entries were submitted to Sure in
the six-week period, after which
a shortlist of four was selected.
The shortlist consisted of two
images selected by Sure staff and
two with the most likes on Sure’s
Facebook page. The winning
image – of some Guernsey cows
leaning over a wall in the Castel –
was selected by a panel including
local professional photographer
Chris George.
The winning entry, from Karen
Langlois, was a unanimous
verdict from the panel.
‘We felt it was a superb photo as
it managed to capture a group
of iconic Guernsey cows in a
really interesting and unique
pose,’ said Emily Field, Sure’s
marketing and PR manager.
‘We were so impressed with the
level of photography submitted
provided vital support to over
2,000 children and young people
in Guernsey and Alderney.’
‘Thanks to the support from
the Ana Leaf Foundation which
covered the set-up costs of the
ball, all the money raised goes
towards The HUB to support the
important emotional wellbeing
work the team does with young
people locally.’
The HUB offers a safe and
confidential space for children and
young people to access one-toone,
structured and evidencebased
emotional support. The
Youth Commission operationally
merged with The HUB service in
July this year and the two charities
now work together to provide
a wide range of services, from
universal to targeted support, for
children and young people across
Guernsey and Alderney.
and glad that the community
had its say on who the winner
was. We’re proud of the role we
play in island life and recognise
that community engagement
is a massive part of this. That’s
why we’re so glad that islanders
embraced the contest and
submitted such a fantastic range
of images.’
Sure also made a charitable
donation of £500 to its
Community Foundation to mark
the competition. The Foundation
supports local causes and
this sum has been donated to
Safer, which supports victims of
domestic abuse in the Bailiwick.
FOR THE LITTLE CHAPEL
FOUNDATION
The Little Chapel Foundation’s
fundraising initiative has received
a significant boost after local
jewellery designers Catherine
Best and her daughter Vikki
Freeman created the ‘Dress to
The event raised more than
Foundation’s fund to restore and
maintain the historic monument
in St Andrew's.
‘The Little Chapel is an iconic
Guernsey landmark and tourist
attraction. I cherish the memories
of my visits there with family
and friends over the years and
we’re proud to be a part of the
fundraising effort,’ said Catherine.
‘We could not have had such
a successful event without
Guernsey people – within
weeks we had the support
of so many local businesses
buying tables to the event and
helping with sponsorships.’
Guernsey Fintech business
FCG, the parent company of UK
insurance provider 1st CENTRAL,
donated a Hyundai i10 premium
hatchback, supplied by Barras Car
Centre, as the feature item of the
raffle which sold 1300 tickets and
was won by Julia Jager.
FCG Group Chairman and Chief
Executive Officer Mike Leonard
said: ‘We are a leading business
in Guernsey and we are
passionate about supporting
our island community.
‘When Catherine approached us
to help we were only too happy
to get involved in a project that
will help ensure generations of
Guernsey people and visitors will
enjoy this wonderful building and
its history,’ he said.
Little Chapel Foundation Head
of Fundraising, Jack Honeybill,
said: ‘The funds raised through
the car raffle and the event itself
gives us a fantastic start to the
winter fundraising campaign
in which we are seeking to
raise at least £130,000.’
The target is for the Little Chapel
to reopen by 1 March.’
