GUERNSEY IN WINTER
Some people might think winter is bleak and a time for hibernation but, just as
with every season, there are things to do and the Bailiwick of Guernsey comes
alive in a magical way at this time of year – it's all about knowing where to find

TAKING A WINTER WALK
If you’re feeling adventurous wrap up warm
and take a long walk around the island’s
dramatic coastline; on a windy winter’s day
the drama of the bays of the west coast to
the cliffs in the south can be awesome. You
can still take guided tours in the winter too.
DISCOVER A COSY COUNTRY PUB
Once you’ve experienced the bracing air
on your winter walk it’s time to find a cosy
pub with a roaring fire. Guernsey has some
perfect nooks in which to hole up from the
Douvres in the south to the Rockmount in
the west. Curl up with a glass of something
warming and let the wind howl outside.

Making the most of the January sales is
a delight in Guernsey. The cobbled high
street is easily manageable between
showers. There’s the mix of quirky boutique
shops and well-known branded outlets
as well as jewellery shops and no VAT.

The winter is the perfect time to learn
more about Guernsey’s compelling past.
There’s a myriad of themes to discover
from folklore to witchcraft or sites of the
German occupation. Guernsey’s history
is incredibly preserved through museum
exhibits and monuments all over the island.
WINTER SWIMMING
Many hardy souls in Guernsey take to
the sea in all weathers. The key here is to
read the weather well and find a secluded
bay where the wind is offshore and the
sea is relatively calm. Many will don a wet
suit to experience the bracing freedom
that comes with winter swimming.
GO TO HERM
Ferries to Herm Island run all year round
and there is nothing quite like a walk around
the island where the varied plant life shows
its winter face and the wildlife, particularly
birds, will keep walkers enthralled.
MOVE HOUSE
While winter may not be the ideal
season to sell your home, many people
do successfully. There are a few key
tips to make your Guernsey property
attractive in the darker months: let in the
light (turn all lights on during viewings),
turn up the heat to welcome visitors,
create a mood with throws in the living
room and plush robes in the bathroom,
dress your dining table for guests and
make your home visually appealing with
photos of your summer garden and
artwork which depicts a happy home.
