Top stories from 2017 It has been a year to behold for the New Zealand Spinal Trust and the SNN. We have been touched by many, many great stories from around New Zealand of people overcoming incredible adversity to achieve extraordinary things. We look back on 10 of the most inspiring stories from 2017 and the advice they have offered to the SCI community. Gavin Bisset - Overcomes the Odds to Help Others Gavin Bisset knows what it is like to sustain a spinal cord injury (SCI) and have to start again. The 37-year-old, who is the Team Manager of the ACC Serious Injury Service at North Harbour, was fortunate to survive an accident in 2006, and is now helping to turn around the lives of others impacted by an SCI. His life-changing back injury helps him to empathise with his clients who are in the same positon. “You realise they obviously didn’t plan for it to happen in their lives; they were going about their business one day, and then they don’t get to go home for three months, or whatever it is,” he said. “I have a better understanding of what they are going through, and also, I know that their recovery can be just as hard on the people around them as it is on the person who is injured, because at least they have a little bit of control over what they are doing. The people around them often feel worse. My injury and recovery have given me a deeper awareness of what people are struggling with day-to-day with their injury.” What advice do you have to offer to others who have sustained an SCI? “The one certainty is, the more willing you are to put effort into your rehabilitation, the more likely it is that you will get something out of it. In those early days, as soon as you are able to start doing that rehab, the more you do, then the more you will benefit from it.” Debra Lampshire - ACC Supreme Award Winner, Attitude Awards Debra Lampshire started hearing voices at six years-old. She was eventually committed to Kingseat Psychiatric Hospital at 17, and remained there for 18 years. On her release, Lampshire took her medication and went between boarding houses and other psychiatric facilities. She never believed she would be able to live independently. One day, she met a visitor to one of the boarding houses who talked about restoring cars. She started thinking about restoring herself. Lampshire believes her life is a case in point in perseverance. “I used mental health services for over 30 years; I was institutionalised for 18 of those 30, and eventually was able to overcome the anxiety and madness which had plagued me for decades,” she said. | 23
