Your adventure begins in Conover! In 1891, early settler
Seth Conover started his own hunting club in this beautiful
corner of Vilas County. Since then, the community of
Conover has been a wilderness escape for hunters, anglers

Winchester, located in the northwest corner of Vilas County,
encompasses over 34,000 acres and 63 lakes. Almost 80
percent of the town’s area is wooded, with more than 6,000
acres of public land as part of the Northern-Highland American
Legion State Forest. A small community most of the year,
our area is perfect for summer activities like fishing, boating,
biking and hiking. Winter sports such as skiing, snowmobiling
and snowshoeing are also popular. Our newly renovated
school building houses a community area, the Winchester
Public Library and an excellent history display of the area.

In Vilas County, it seems that everyone who visits here has a lake they love, one that they return to year after year—or at
least dream about visiting again. People have their own reasons for becoming so attached to Vilas County’s lakes. They’ve
produced record-sized muskies and walleye, and they’ve helped generations of families grow closer. They offer a kind of quiet
peace, and they’ve provided childhood laughs and thrills. In all, there are more than 1,300 lakes in Vilas County, a gift of the
glaciers that passed through long ago. There’s always a favorite to return to or a new one to explore. If you’re new to Vilas
County’s waters, head to the shore and be prepared to fall in love.
WATERY WONDERS
Grab a seat on the grass and prepare to be thrilled. Vilas
County communities hold free water ski shows throughout the
summer. It’s a Vilas County tradition, and you’ll find shows in
Sayner-Star Lake, Conover, the Minocqua Area and Manitowish

Vilas County lakes have been luring people to the
Northwoods for more than a century, but they are still as
beautiful and unspoiled as they were during the days of the
steam trains. There are so many ways to experience the
lakes of Vilas County.
Anglers can cast a line in these waters to hook everything
from crappie, yellow perch and bluegill to hard-fighting
walleye, pike and musky. Vilas County lakes also hold some
of the biggest, most beautiful smallmouth bass in the state.
When temperatures drop, drill a hole for some of the best
ice fishing in the Northwoods.
If you’re looking for a paddling adventure, you’ve found the
place. Launch your craft on one of our established routes
or chart your own course. You’ll find hidden ponds and quiet
waters to explore or navigate as well as routes that can take

Where to Go?
With so many beautiful lakes, this is perhaps the
hardest question to answer. But here’s a selection of
lakes that won’t disappoint on your next vacation.
HIGH LAKE, BOULDER JUNCTION – a record 18-pound
walleye was once landed here.
PIONEER LAKE, CONOVER – like many lakes in Vilas
County, this lake will take you back.

On warm summer days, there’s nothing better than a
refreshing Northwoods swim. Dive into the cool, clear waters
of a Vilas County lake or soak up the sun in the soft sand of
a secluded, postcard-perfect beach. Public swimming areas
are plentiful and many resorts and other lodging
properties have beaches for their guests.
One of the best ways to enjoy the water in Vilas County
is spending a summer afternoon out on a swim raft. Grab
some friends or family and get ready to have some fun.
Boaters: start your engine and get ready to explore.
There are unlimited options here, including lakes perfect
for waterskiing and tubing. Pontoon boaters will find Vilas
County lakes are great for a cruise.
FLAMBEAU LAKE, LAC DU FLAMBEAU – named after
the French word for torch, this lake has been a highlight
of many vacations.
BLACK OAK LAKE, LAND O’ LAKES – known as the
clearest lake in Wisconsin.
REST LAKE, MANITOWISH WATERS – a perfect thing to
do on this perfect lake.
BRANDY LAKE, MINOCQUA AREA – this small lake is
the perfect place to ponder an evening cocktail.
KENTUCK LAKE, PHELPS – a serene lake offering great
fishing and tranquility.
OXBOW LAKE, PRESQUE ISLE – this gem of a lake is a
cast away from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
PLUM LAKE, SAYNER-STAR LAKE – the Plum Ski-ters
have offered free waterski shows since 1960.
LOST LAKE, ST. GERMAIN – not to be confused with
nearby Found Lake!

FISHING
HOOK SOME ADVENTURE
LAND A TROPHY
In Vilas County, you can find some of the best smallmouth
bass, walleye and musky fishing in North America. And that’s
not all. Vilas County lakes also offer exceptional fishing for
crappie, bluegill and northern pike. Vilas County lakes range
in size from pristine woodland trout ponds to endless chains
of connected lakes, and it has long been the fishing destination
of choice for anglers from around the Midwest. If you like
solitude, head to one of the small, remote lakes and enjoy
casting on undeveloped waters. For expanded
possibilities, head to a larger flowage or chain.
The main fishing season kicks off in May. Some larger lakes
to explore include Lac Vieux Desert near Land O’ Lakes,
North Twin Lake near Phelps and Fence Lake near Lac du
Flambeau. If you’re in the mood for a bigger challenge—
literally—try tracking down Vilas County’s monster musky.
Musky fishing season runs from the Saturday closest to
Memorial Day until the end of November.

FISHING
Record Haul
Vilas County’s lakes have produced some big fish, and
the biggest have broken state records. There was the
54-inch tiger musky caught on Lac Vieux Desert in
1919, and the 29-inch silver redhorse caught in Plum
Creek in 1985. There was the 18-pound walleye landed
on High Lake in 1933 and the 4.3-inch mottled sculpin
(they are small!) captured in Gunlock Lake last year.
Records are meant to be broken, and they just might be
broken here again. Cast a line and try your luck.

ADVENTURE: SPRING & SUMMER
Paddlers will find an endless supply of open water and
solitude in Vilas County. The Wisconsin River alone offers
nearly 50 miles of paddling from the headwaters in Land O’
Lakes south to Conover and Eagle River and west to the
St. Germain area.
Explore native history in southwestern Vilas County on the
reservation of the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior
Chippewa. The George W. Brown, Jr. Ojibwe Museum &
Cultural Center 2 features fascinating exhibits including a
24-foot dugout canoe.
If you like beautiful trails, you’ll love Vilas County. Visit
trails.vilas.org to download the free Map It Vilas County
trails app, featuring over 60 trails, or order a free Vilas County
Silent Sports Trail Map. A great place for nature lovers is the
Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area, where the trails will take
you to pristine lakes. Hikers interested in a longer adventure
can explore the 1.5 million acre Chequamegon-Nicolet
National Forest via the Anvil Lake Trail, just east of Eagle
River. The trail is just off Old Military Rd, an 1800s route that
follows a Native American trail used for hundreds of years.
The longest trail in the county is the nearly 50-mile Heart of
Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System, connecting

Mountain bikers will find some family-friendly off-road riding
on the Madeline Lake Trail in the Minocqua area and rolling
single track on the WinMan Trails between Winchester and
Manitowish Waters.
Near Conover, enjoy approximately 20 miles of horseback
riding on the scenic trails at Torch Lake 13 , Ski Hill Trails
and Pioneer Creek Trails.
ATV riders can explore Vilas County’s expanding riding options.
Discover routes connecting the communities of Eagle River,
Conover, Phelps, Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain and Arbor Vitae
with links to systems east and north of Vilas County.
Adventurer/dual-sport motorcycle riders will find numerous
scenic and unpaved roads to explore.
All of these activities might make you hungry. Restaurants
in Boulder Junction or Sayner-Star Lake are good places for a
central rest stop. Head to the Eagle River Farmers’ Market
on Wednesdays and Sundays for fresh produce and baked
goods. Stop by a friendly tavern for lunch or settle in to a

ADVENTURE: FALL
The show never gets old. Vilas County is covered by a
heavy tree canopy, and when the temperatures begin to
turn, our leaves explode with color. This is the season when
colors are vivid, the air is fresh and time spent outdoors is
unforgettable. Vilas County has more than 240,000 acres
of public land, and it’s one of the best places in Wisconsin
for taking in fall scenery.
If you’re looking for an unforgettable hike, there’s no better
time to get on the trails. If you’re seeking relaxation, there’s
nothing like warming near the first fire of the season. If you
feel like shopping, this is the perfect time to explore quaint
stores across Vilas County.
Vilas County has nine spectacular golf courses, including
the historic Plum Lake Golf Course in Sayner-Star Lake. Take
time to visit the charming 1923 clubhouse. If golfing for you
doesn’t involve a putter, try the disc golf course at Northland
Pines High School in Eagle River.
A great place for a fall paddle is the 25-mile voyage on
the Wisconsin River from Land O’ Lakes to River Road
near Conover.
Head to Manitowish Waters for a look at some cranberries—
this area helps Wisconsin lead the nation in cranberry
production, and tours of cranberry farms are available
from July to early October.
Afterwards, take a fall cruise on the Manitowish Waters Chain
of Lakes. This 10-lake chain covers nearly 4,200 acres, has
58 miles of shoreline and includes a section of the Manitowish
River. Nearby, in Presque Isle, take a fall stroll through Shanty
Boy Hill Cemetery 11 , a lumberjack memorial.
There’s nothing better than fishing in Vilas County when fall
colors are reflected in the water. Catch trophies on the source
of the Wisconsin River, the 2,800-acre Lac Vieux Desert.
Hop in the car to explore miles of scenic fall color. West
of Star Lake, the twisting Rustic Road #60 10 provides
a dramatic drive. Another pleasant route: Cty. Hwy. E from
Phelps to Hwy. 45. You’ll pass the headwaters of the
Wisconsin River. Migratory birds wing their way through Vilas
County every fall. See beautiful birds in the Guido Rahr Sr.
Tenderfoot Forest Preserve, a nearly-1,000-acre preserve
near Land O’ Lakes and Presque Isle. It’s home to 500
acres of old growth forest. Another good birding spot is the
Powell Marsh Trail, an area between Manitowish Waters and
Lac du Flambeau.

loops in the Nicolet National Forest 9 .

celebrations taking place virtually every fall weekend. They
are events filled with beautiful crafts, delicious food and
lively music.
One of the best ways to end a fall day in Vilas County is in a
supper club. As the light grows low, settle in with something
comforting, like a tender cut of prime rib or an ample serving
of walleye. But first order a classic Northwoods beverage,
like a brandy old fashioned. Sweet or sour? The choice,

The Winter Park Bark Skijor Race, held in March in Minocqua,
is a unique style of racing involving cross-country skiing
while attached to an energetic dog. The dogs and the skiers
put on a show!
Vilas County has over 600 miles of snowmobile trails—
you can get virtually anywhere via this trail network.
In Phelps, you can pick up a trail within a block of town
and launch an adventure that continues across the county
and beyond. Visit vilas.org to download the updated Map It
Vilas County trails app that will help you navigate the county’s
snowmobile routes. Eagle River is known around the world
as a snowmobiler’s mecca, hosting both the annual Vintage
Derby and World Championship Snowmobile Derby at historic
Derby Track. More than 1,400 riders compete before crowds
exceeding 30,000 over the two weeks.
ADVENTURE: WINTER
People who live for winter fun love Vilas County. Every winter,
Vilas County is blanketed with a heavy layer of snow that
creates fresh opportunities for adventure and relaxation.
Located in the Lake Superior snowbelt, Vilas County receives
a ton of snow—on average, more than six feet each winter!
That means Vilas County is heaven for people who love
to go snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.
Vilas County’s more than 1,300 lakes offer endless pos sibilities
for ice fishermen, and the county’s vast snow-frosted forests
provide a stunning backdrop to winter getaways.
If you’re looking for an adventure that’s a little more solitary,
you won’t have to look far—just find some ice. Fishermen
flock to Vilas County for quiet spots like Alma Lake, a little
gem near St. Germain. Another great spot: Stormy Lake
near Conover, a spot that is far more tranquil than its name
suggests. Vilas County is also home to nearly a dozen ice
fishing tournaments, including events for new anglers like
the free Annual Kids’ Fishing Jamboree in Land O’ Lakes.
Fishing is not the only way to win on the ice. Every February,
Eagle River hosts the Pond Hockey National Championships.
Teams come from all over the country, bringing high-level skills
and more than a few colorful team names. Noncompetitive
skaters: take the kids to one of Vilas County’s many outdoor
rinks like Conover Town Park, which has a heated restroom,
or Boulder Junction Winter Park, with its warming shelter.
Start your big adventure with a big breakfast in one of Vilas
County’s many restaurants. They open early and offer all the
classics—hot coffee, pancakes, bacon and eggs, just how
you like them.
Next, head out for some snowshoeing. Just south of Boulder
Junction, the Lumberjack Trail offers a scenic trek. Near
Presque Isle, an outing at the Van Vliet Hemlocks 14 will
take you past 400-year-old trees.
Indoor Inspiration
Vilas County is laced with miles of well-maintained crosscountry
ski trails. The Three Eagle and Tara Lila Trails, south
of Eagle River, provide over 10 miles of diverse loops and
trails for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. South
of Winchester, the WinMan Trails offer ski and groomed
fat-bike trails in a 1,300-acre natural area. Warm up in a
new shelter at the trailhead.
Mush! In February you’ll see some fast paws in Land O’ Lakes
when the community hosts the Three Bear Sled Dog Races.
If you’re looking for a change of pace from the outdoors,
Vilas County has something for everyone. Venture out
for some shopping and stop for a fresh-brewed cup of
java on your way. Sign up for an art class or catch a
movie. Good times don’t stop when the sun goes down.
Find a pub to quench your thirst and have a snack.
Finish off the day with a traditional Northwoods fish
fry or experience a unique dish at one of Vilas County’s
many dining locations.

EXPLORE THE TRAILS
Where to Ride
Vilas County has a nice selection of marked ATV/UTV
routes, including some new easy-riding routes and trails
in Conover, Phelps, Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain, Eagle
River and Arbor Vitae. These routes, usually open from
early May to the end of October, connect to other area
trails and routes to the east and west. The routes and
trails are all clearly marked, so you’ll have no trouble
getting around from one area to the next.
MILES OF TRAILS
Trail lovers who enjoy exploring the beauty of the Northwoods
forests will find a big world to explore in Vilas County. The
snowmobile was invented here, and the county has an
expansive network of winter trails. The county’s ATV/UTV
routes and trails are newer, but they also offer miles of
beautiful riding. The trail network is expanding every year.
ATVING/UTVING
Vilas County is where trail adventures begin. In eastern
Vilas County, you’ll find miles of great riding. Current routes
developed by the Landover ATV Club and the St. Germain
ATV Club connect the communities of Eagle River, Conover,
Phelps, Land O’ Lakes and St. Germain. Riders can cover
a variety of terrain, from paved roads to dirt routes on fire
roads. Vilas County’s ATV/UTV trails also connect to routes
and trails in neighboring areas. Need a ride? There are
several businesses in the Eagle River and Land O’ Lakes
areas that rent ATVs and UTVs.

SNOWMOBILING
Vilas County is one of the world’s premier snowmobiling
destinations. Ride over 600 miles of spectacular trails that
traverse a half million acres of wilderness, crossing undeveloped
lakes and connecting scenic Northwoods communities. Vilas

significant snow. Eagle River is the Snowmobile Capital of the

Bike the Heart
Vilas County is home to a premier Northwoods cycling
trail. The Heart of Vilas County Paved Bike Trail System
allows riders to explore over 45 miles of paved trails
connecting St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction and
Manitowish Waters. The trail system features smooth
pavement suitable for all types of riders, and the trail
will lead you past lakes, restaurants, ice cream shops
and more. All you need is your sense of adventure.
