46 THE LAST WORD
When you go online you have certain expectations.
You can connect to whatever website you want, no
matter how twisted and sick you are, within legal
limits (Judge Moore) alleged. You expect that your
cable or phone company isn’t screwing with the data
and is connecting you to all websites, applications
and content you choose. You expect to be in control
of all your Internet, not just get a slice of the big pizza
pie! That’s not a amore, that is Net Neutrality!
Don’t let Trump’s FCC chairman, Ajit Pai, destroy
Net Neutrality. Even if you don’t know what it is,
you surely want equality and that is all we ask. That
is all we need you to do. Call congress and stop his
plan, and tell your members of Congress to condemn
Pai’s attack on the internet. We must do it
today, they will decide Dec 14! Activism today acts
on our future.
But they are exactly like most of
COREY HAMILTON -
MULTI-TALENTED ARTIST
CRAFTSMAN-HWY 62 STU-
DIO TOURS
Corey Hamilton is a Yucca Valley artist
who has been creating art and designing
and building custom made furniture for
10 years. Corey is a local
artist who credits his broad interest in
art to his art teacher at high school, who
is also his uncle, for introducing him
to a variety of art mediums and techniques.
Corey and his brother worked
for their dad who owns a specialized
construction company in the Palm
Springs area which helped to provide
him experience in woodworking that he
has carried into his work with furniture
design and wood sculpture.
Corey paints, sculpts in wood, concrete
and clay, draws and designs tattoos, creates
faux paintings, murals, and details
for architectural installations. When
visiting his home/studio on the Hwy 62
Tour it was evident of the multiple mediums
he works with in his art and furniture
designing. He especially thrives
on furniture design and construction,
precision work and craftsmanship is a
primary emphasis in his creations. The
photo in this article shows him beside
a wood sculpture of a coyote that is one
half organic animal and the other side
a cyber/robotic animal. This won the
Palm Springs Fine Arts Commission,
juried award in February 2017.
He invites prospective clients to
challenge him with a creative project
encompassing his multi-talented
ability to create. He says that the
client will take pleasure in knowing
that the piece designed for them is
a reflection of their vision and that
it is unique in the world.
Palm Springs Concerts Offers
Classical Variety for Its 60th
Anniversary Season
In the winter of 1958 a unique musical
organization, called the Palm Springs Community
Concert Association, came to the
Coachella Valley, ushering in more than half
a century of high culture at affordable prices.
Now called “PS Concerts,” the group operates
with the same guiding spirit that began
it sixty years ago this January.
Each concert during the past six decades has
been a celebration of the inspired genius of
the men with names like Bach, Beethoven,
Brahms, Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Bernstein,
Joplin – and many others from the Baroque,
Classical, Romantic, Impressionist and
Modern eras of great music, not to mention
an occasional nod to the inspirations from
Broadway and Hollywood.
This season’s classical offerings are four concerts
of varied interest including the Classical
Interpretations of the Neave Trio (Jan.
29); the Trumpet Virtuosities of Brandon
Ridenour (Feb 12); Guitarist Andy Hackbarth’s
Homage to Andres Segovia (Feb. 26),
and the Keyboard Artistry of Thomas Pandolfi
(Mar. 21).
The concerts will all take place at 7:30 p.m.
in the Richards Center for the Arts, formerly
called the Palm Springs High School Auditorium.
One of the most venerable and distinguished
venues in the desert, the refurbished
concert hall has been completely re-built,
with many new perks and features, including
new seats, new stage, new electronics and
lighting. Tickets are available at the door for
$20 – or a full season pass for just $50.
In spite of being the oldest performing arts
organization in the Coachella Valley, and
with modest ticket prices that welcome
everybody, PS Concerts is often called “the
best kept secret in the desert.” It is a grass
roots association of music lovers who gather
in a series of meetings to plan their concert
season each year. The concerts are financed
by advance ticket sales and season tickets
offer complimentary reciprocal participation
in the concert events of 10 other Southern
California “sister cities” in the Community
Concert family.
For further information about PS Concerts,
THE LAST WORD by Greg Pettis
Our country is changing – sadly not for the
better. I call every week for resistance – but
we must remain civil in our resistance.
The following is reprinted from the National
Institute for Civil Discourse., ICMA, Weber
Shandwick, Powel Tate.
White the methods of practicing civility
aren’t new or revolutionary, they are largely
being ignored today. However, experts say
practicing these common suggestions will
have a measurable impact on overcoming
incivility.
Seek out a variety of reliable news sources
with different perspectives.
Allow others to speak, and listen closely to
build mutual understanding.
Don’t blame your opponent for everything
that goes wrong.
Understand that people aren’t morally bankrupt
if they hold an opposing viewpoint
Speak calmly and avoid shouting.
Don’t try to win arguments at any cost.
Avoid social media conflicts, and refrain
from posting inflammatory content.
Don’t lie or exaggerate to convince people of
your point.
Seek common ground in your conversations.
Avoid rumors and gossip, and don’t perpetuate
them.
other person to have a dialogue with you.
Don’t jump to conclusions or assume you
know what another person’s thinking.
Start or join a civility group in your workplace.
Well, that’s it for this week. RESIST - civilly!!!
Don’t hesitate to email me with comments,
questions or just thoughts at greg@gregpettis.com.
I’d be happy to hear from you any
time.
Greg Pettis is a 22 year city councilman in
Cathedral City. He has made his name in
governmental circles as an expert in transportation
issues and is very active in working
on bringing passenger rail service to the
COACHELLA Valley. Greg was the first openly
gay elected city council members In Riverside
County. He has served on the boards of
the National League of Cities and the League
of California Cities and as President of the
