Seyisi, 49, who
has been working
as a domestic
worker for the
McLean family
since 2008,
completed the
college's Office
Assistant short
learning
programme.
The course
consisted of seven
modules which Seyisi completed
over the course of the year. In
order to obtain her certificate, a
minimum of 75% and above for
each module was required.
“It was very difficult, especially
at my age. Some of my friends in
the class were born in 1997. I still
can't believe that I actually did
this,” said Seyisi.
often studying until midnight
every day to master
the seven computer
subjects.
“When I first
said.
Hailing from King
William's Town,
Seyisi never
managed to obtain
her matric certificate, failing twice
before having to drop out in order
to aid her struggling family.
Today Seyisi is fully proficient in
Microsoft Word, Outlook,
Windows and Ecxel with a
striking confidence.
hardworking student. She was
always ready to give 200 %. It’s a
“It has given her so much
she tries more things and keeps
learning. She has a real drive and
thirst for knowledge.”
Chosen out of 200 students in
the occupational skills
attitude and continuous effort is
what helped her bag the college's
“I am incredibly proud of
Buyiswa and what she has
achieved through sheer
Drakensberg Boys Choir festive treat
Eclectic mix of
classic and
contemporary
MADELEINE CHAPUT
LAST week Monday night, the
Drakensberg Boys Choir treated the
audience to Christmas ballads and
carols at Hudson Park High School.
The choir, which consists of more
than 50 boys, has garnered
international acclaim with their
worldwide performances.
Recently finishing their Cape tour in
celebration of their 50th anniversary,
the choir performed their Noël concer t
in various coastal cities, including
Stellenbosch, Plettenberg Bay and Port
Elizabeth, with East London being one
of the last cities on their route.
“We ’ve had lots of fun on this tour
and as soon as we get home, we jump
straight into our annual two-day music
festival Christmas in the Berg,” choir
conductor Kenny Kabak said.
The choir’s Noël concert boasted an
eclectic music mix of a heavenly
classical choral repertoire and more
contemporary festive pop numbers.
“Our repertoire includes music from
the medieval and baroque periods for
educational purposes for the boys, but
we also incorporate more modern songs
by the likes of Justin Bieber and
Pe n t at o n i x , ” Kabak said.
The Drakensberg Boys Choir School is
home to 120 boys from grades 4 to 9.
The choir tours annually both nationally
and internationally, sharing their
passion for music.
“The tours are my favourite part. We
go overseas a lot and we get to meet
and interact with so many different
people and learn about different
cultures,” the school’s head boy Liam
Müller said.
“The best part about performing all
over the world and around South Africa,
is the reaction we get from the
audience. We love the music, but to see
the audience enjoying it as well, is
really great.”
The boys rehearse for at least two
hours every day, which is evident from
their impressive musical harmony.
“We rehearse a lot, but I really like
the songs we get to sing. My favourite
one is Fa i t h ,” 11-year-old Seth Brown
said. “I also really like being a part of
the school because it’s situated in such
a cool place, the rivers in the
Drakensberg are my favourite.”
The choir’s performances often
involve audience interaction.
“We often end our performances with
our rendition of S h o s h o l oz a and get the
audience to sing along. It creates a
great sense of nationalism,” Kabak said.
New port managers for East London, Mossel Bay
TRANSNET National Ports Authority (TNPA) chief
executive Shulami Qalinge has announced the
appointments of Sharon Sijako as port manager in
East London and Shadrack Tshikalange as port
manager at the Port of Mossel Bay, effective
December 1.
Both appointees have fulfilled the roles in an
acting capacity since April, when TNPA last made
leadership appointments, following the resignation
of the Cape Town and Saldanha port managers.
Tshikalange and Sijako most recently served at
their respective ports as senior operations
managers for three-and-a-half years.
Qalinge said: “We are delighted to have finalised
the recruitment and selection processes leading
up to these appointments, as this will better
enable us to deliver on our strategic objectives
and continue to pursue improvements in safety
and operational efficiencies at these ports.
“I would also like to thank Captain Vania Cloete
in Mossel Bay and Mr Alvin Singama in East
London, who have both shared the acting port
manager responsibilities with our successful
appointees in their respective ports this year.
“The decision was not made any easier, due to
the high calibre of these and other applicants. We
are however confident that Shadrack and Sharon
will continue to serve our organisation and its
clients most ably in their new roles,” she added.
East London after Jacqueline Brown, who had a
nine-year tenure at the helm of South Africa’s only
river port. “S i j a ko ’s career with Transnet began 21
developed a deep understanding of the port
system through operations roles at both TNPA and
sister division, Transnet port terminals.
She has more than a decade of senior
operations experience spanning the port’s
automotive, container and grain terminals. A
dynamic manager, Sijako counts team leadership
Pair’s 300km walk
for school shoes
EL heroes
raise funds
for needy
THANDEKA NTLONTI
TWO East London heroes
embarked on a 300km walk in a
bid to raise money for school
shoes.
The two men, Lelethu
Tukuvana and Songezo Koli,
started their walk on October 30
and finished it on Friday
November 3.
Last year, Tukuvana started
collecting school shoes for
children whose families cannot
afford them. This year he
collaborated with Uniform
Project, an initiative which
focuses on providing all uniform
items as well as sanitary pads to
underprivileged schools.
Tukuvana and Koli are
members of the organisation
“Friends of Chintsa” and they
decided to challenge themselves
and be brave enough to walk
300km. The “Walking for School
Shoes” walk started at the
Crossways SPAR north to
Butterworth, east to Kei Mouth
and south to finish at the Friends
of Chintsa office in Chintsa East.
“With the money raised from
our walk, we will be able to buy
school shoes for those children
that do not have and who go to
school barefoot,” Tukuvana said.
The money was donated to the
walkers by local business and
individuals. The Walking for
School Shoes and Uniform
Project initiative is one that hits
home for Tukuvana.
While growing up on a farm,
he too had no school shoes. He
would go to school barefoot and
in shorts, even in the winter
season. “This year alone we have
managed to donate close to
1200 pairs of school shoes to
underprivileged children.”
Tukuvane believes no child
should be without proper school
uniform as this will affect the
child’s confidence and
self-esteem, which will lead to
the child skipping school.
If anyone would like to assist
and help with donations, they
can do so by donating through
SPRING IN THE STEP: One hundred needy children enjoyed a great time at Gravity Indoor Trampoline
Park in Beacon Bay on Tuesday (November 21) when Global Mercy Mission took the kids for their annual
Christmas party. Joshua Minter who organised the day out, says he saw his kids playing with an old
mattress, turn it into a trampoline and then approached Gravity to allow them to experience the real
thing. Paramesh Reshalin of Gravity Indoor Trampoline Park said they were more than happy to host
the kids as it being so close to Christmas time, they felt they had to go all-out to make the children
PIONEERS United maintained top
spot in the Border Cricket
Promotional League when they
beat the visiting Mdantsane outfit
Masakhane at the Breidbach Oval
on Sunday.
Masakhane captain Sindile
Ndevu won the toss and elected
to bowl in the 50-over game.
The visitors started well and
managed to bowl Pioneers out fo r
130 in 36.1 overs at a run rate of
3.59. But Masakhane failed to
reach the target after a
disastrous batting performance,
which saw them succumb to a
meagre 59 all out in only 19.5
overs, that meant the King side
won the game by 71 runs.
Pioneers openers Daryl Fourie
and Daylon Appel went on the
attack up front, putting on a solid
70 runs for the first wicket before
Fourie was caught by Sivenathi
Dynanisi for a well-played 36 off
53 balls.
Tasleem Safter joined Appel on
70/1 after 18.3 overs and the pair
added 18 to the total, b e fo r e
Safter was caught by Mubarak
Patel for a duck in the 22nd over.
Lynden Esterhuizen was
trapped LBW by Lavela Jim
without bothering the scorers.
Shandrè Butler came in and
watched as Appel was bowled by
Spotlight on diabetic care
STAFF REPORTER
THE Breidbach Clinic, in
partnership with its clinic
committee, commemorated
World Diabetes Day at their local
hall in Breidbach last week
T h u r s d ay.
According to the calendar of
events, November 14 each year
is globally earmarked to bring
awareness and educate
communities about diabetes.
The event, themed “Wo m e n
and Diabetes – Our right to a
healthy future”, was attended by
a handful of people and
unfolded with speeches and
motivational messages of
support by the invited guests. It
ended with soup being served
and clothing handed out by the
King William’s Town Lions Club.
Among the guests present
were Buffalo City Municipality
ward 44 councillor Sixolisiwe
Ntsasela, her ward committee
member Tully Winnnaar,
department of health promoter
practitioner Sizwe Mgangxa,
clinic committee members and
Breidbach Clinic operational
as the guest speaker.
Acorn Valley Committee
chairman Kelvin de Lange was
the programme director and
called on the audience to listen
attentively to the speakers and
to share it with family and
friends at home.
Ntsasela commended the
the dangers of diabetes.
Qamba highlighted the vision
of government, namely “long
of South Africa”.
“Responding to that and
having noted that diabetes is a
leading cause of death, we as
the clinic have decided along
with the board to hold a session
of this nature to inform, educate
and equip the community about
diabetes,” Qamba said.
“We want to encourage
people to be screened for and to
take treatment if positively
diagnosed.”
She further explained the
irreversible complications of
diabetes which include
blindness, kidney and heart
She added: “Diabetes doesn’t
just affect the individual, but
also the families– think of a
breadwinner becoming blind.”
Mgangxa echoed the
seriousness of diabetes as
explained by Qamba and
are diabetic”.
“Diabetes is manageable and
not treatable and the reason
why people are dying is that
they don’t take their treatment,”
Mgangxa said.
“Our mission as a department
is to encourage people to live
life to the fullest and if you have
one of the symptoms displayed
here, then you have to go to the
clinic as a matter of urgency.”
the success of the event.
VINCENT Park has recently
become the first National
company in East London to
support the Local Yokel
Project by joining the Yellow
Ribbon Campaign.
The mall, although based
in East London, is owned by
national company Primedia
Malls, with many national
stores as well.
Started by Megan Devan
three years ago, the Local
Yokel project is dedicated to
bringing local,
independently owned
businesses and consumers
together in an effort to
promote the social and
economic growth of the East
London community.
In an effort to identify
with the Project's Yellow
Ribbon campaign, Vincent
Park are proudly displaying
bright yellow ribbons
around their food court.
“This campaign is
enormously grateful to
Vincent Park for teaming up
to show our community how
easy it can be to work
together and support local
first for a better Buffalo
Cit y,” said Devan
The Yellow Ribbon
campaign aims to identify
consumers or enterprises as
supporters of local business
with a splash of yellow on
their premises.
“About 40% of our
tenants are local business
owners and we have been
ensuing this practice for
some time, endeavouring to
support local first wherever
possible,” Vincent Park
Centre manager, Joseph
With various businesses
around East London already
displaying this bright splash
Top national acts set to
headline annual festival
Thousands
expected
to attend
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE annual Buyel’Ekhaya Pan
African Cultural Festival will return
to East London on Sunday,
December 17.
Now in its ninth year, the
festival offers a range of great
enter tainment.
Last year, the festival attracted
23 000 fans who enjoyed a
world-class production
showcasing some of South
Africa’s top musical talents.
This year’s edition of the festival
promises to be even bigger and
better, with impressive headline
acts including performances by
Black Coffee (who is making a big
name for himself overseas), Oliver
Mtukudzi, Amanda Black, Vusi
Nova, Zahara and many more.
“Buyel’Ekhaya is a clarion call
for all who belong to the Eastern
Cape to return and plough back
meaningfully to the development
of the province’s youth,” fe st i va l
founder, Nomahlubi Mazwai, said.
This year, the second instalment
of the Buyel’Ekhaya Fashion
Development Programme was also
included in the programme.
The intense skills development
and mentorship programme
allowed emerging Eastern Cape
designers to showcase their work
alongside internationally
renowned Eastern Cape designer
Laduma Ngxokolo, among other
iconic designers.
Through strategic partnerships
with the National Department of
Arts and Culture, the Buffalo City
Metropolitan Municipality, the
Fibre Processing and
Manufacturing Seta (FPM SETA),
the National Lotteries
Commission, the Eastern Cape
Parks and Tourism Agency and the
SABC, the festival endeavours to
recognise the youth’s talent in the
Eastern Cape.
“The Eastern Cape is a province
that, despite its wealth of culture
and heritage, continues to be
defined as the poorest province in
South Africa with the highest rate
of youth unemployment.
“Buyel’Ekhaya has pioneered
initiatives that are aimed at
exposing and developing the
latent talent that resides within
the Eastern Cape youth,” M a z wa i
said.
The festival will take place at
the Buffalo Park Cricket Stadium
from 10am to 5am.
Tickets to the music festival are
on sale at Computicket and
Shoprite and Checkers outlets
Peppermint can
aid digestion and
calm the tummy
IT IS near that time of the year again – busy with
shopping, holidays and gauging ourselves with
more fast food! Year end festivities are around the
corner!
Stricter dietary control gets tossed out the
window. In through the door, comes more food and
drinks. Often happy times equal abundant yummy
food. Sorry ... but your digestive system can only
handle so much and soon will complain about
some indigestion.
Try not to overeat, but when you do, perhaps a
little of a green herb named peppermint may bring
back your smile and comfort. Rubbing a bit of
peppermint oil and carrier oil on your tummy may
relax an upset tummy with colic, even in babies!
Complimentary mint sweets are often given
after a meal at some restaurants. Is it just to
freshen up your breath? Could it be traced back to
ancient use of the mint herb to assist digestion?
Truth be told, most mint sweets are flavoured
these days and don’t contain the main oil of mint
– which is menthol. So you might only be eating
mint-flavoured sweets with none of the benefits!
Peppermint oil is also said to assist with
headaches and nausea while it relaxes muscles!
Don’t forget, it is great for common colds in
clearing respiratory congestion and infections.
This herb has calming effects and studies show
it eases intestinal cramping with its
anti-spasmodic properties. If you suffer from IBS
(Irritable Bowel Syndrome), peppermint in slow
release capsules may really be a useful aid for you
in some cases.
Historically, peppermint was created between
water mint and spearmint. This little bright green
herb grows abundantly in gardens. It is refreshing
to add peppermint leaves to ice cream, rich meat
based dishes, uplifting iced teas, salads and much
more.
Records of peppermint have been traced back to
a few thousand years ago. You might even think
better by inhaling some fresh mint oil, while it is
said to enhance your energy and concentration!
This holiday season let the strong aromatics of
mint ease the traffic of food through your body. –
Black, blue on
Black Friday
“WOW,” I said to myself
when the TV news presenter
told us that sales
amounting to more than
R10-million were made in
two hours on Black Friday –
between midnight and 2am!
And according to reports,
60000 shoppers trawled the
mall at Hemingways alone
during the spending binge.
Any male who has
witnessed the first hour of a
major event such as this,
will forever have no doubts
as to which is the weaker
sex. A rugged former Border
rugby lock forward and
captain I knew, was once
obliged to see his doctor for
treatment after being
unwit tingly
involved
REFLECTIONS
... with Charles Beningfield
in a
mid-week
b r aw l
fo r
half-price
bargains.
His twisted knee and
bruised ribs responded to
treatment but he insisted he
would never recover from
the shock of seeing how the
opposite sex which had
always been regarded as
fragile, could be
transformed by sale fever
into a charging mob more
frightening and dangerous
than a stampeding herd of
buffalo. The poor chap had
been instructed by his wife
to replenish his underwear
drawer but when he
reached the counter, he was
capable only of whispering
for water and crutches.
Recalling the horror of those
few moments after the
doors of the shop had
swung open, the former
rugby player, protested that
he had quite literally been
swept off his feet by a horde
of women of uncertain age
and thrown with savage
force against the side of a
cosmetic counter.
Around him the battle
raged. Skirts were raised
high to allow legs of various
shapes and sizes to break
into sprinters’ strides and
with wild screams of
triumph that might have
accompanied the frenzy of a
Zulu war dance, items of
clothing and footwear were
seized and hurled about.
It is obviously not the
thought of bargains alone
that attract women to sales
like Black Friday. How is it
that the conquering
housewife returns home
with hard-won clobber for
which no-one in the family
has the slightest use? Her
excuse is always ready as
she appraises and unwraps
an oddment of bilious green
curtaining and observes
that it can always be used
for cleaning the car.
A woman’s passion for
sales clearly has a profound
psychological interpretation.
It is the right moment or
season in the year when she
can truly let her hair down –
when she can use her claws
or elbows. Bruised, battered
and broke though she may
end up being, a woman is
never happier than when
she is surrounded by her
sisters and charging
towards the bargain
counters. But as my friend
the former rugby player
would have readily
confirmed, mere men
should be warned of
participation in this
particular contact sport at
their peril.
Black Friday? Ouch!

B u c k a ro o ’s sterilisation
drive depends on you
FOUR years ago, renowned fine
art photographer Marlene
Neumann initiated a project that
would help change the lives of
many stray animals in and
around East London.
The Go & Express par tnered
and assisted Neumann and the
Buckaroo initiative with the
“give a rand give a buck”.
She believed that if everyone
gave just R1, there would be
enough money to make a
difference to the lives of animals
in need.
Over a period of 18 months,
Neumann and her team raised
R1.2-million which was used to
revamp the kennels and
grounds at the East London
SPCA.
Neumann pioneered the
project and today she has
managed to ensure that the
SPCA is listed as one of the
gardens in the Pam Golding
Gardens of East London
w e e ke n d .
She did not stop there. The
Buckaroo initiative has
expanded to assisting township
dogs.
Neumann and her team, with
the help of the ELSPCA, have
sterilised more than 400 dogs in
the last 15 months.
The project funds the
outreach programme and the
East London vets have also
come on board to assist in
terms of sterilising.
“We are sterilising 28 dogs a
month now. Each week I am
personally involved with which
dogs need help,” Neumann said.
She and her team have been
working closely with the
community in Chintsa East
Township and have expanded to
B r a k fo n t e i n .
“The dogs are in a really bad
condition, with mange and
malnut rition.
“We have to feed them up
first over a period of three
weeks before we are able to
take them in to be sterilised. It
is a real epidemic as owners
cannot afford to have their dogs
sterilised, which perpetuates the
problem and the cycle
continues. It has been noted
that over a period of eight years,
one female dog [and her
offspring] can reproduce 10000
puppies.
“I don’t think anyone is aware
of the desperate situation these
animals are in. We have to do
something to take the pressure
off of the local sanctuaries.”
The Buckaroo project is
desperate for monthly donations
in order to continue the
sterilisation drive, and to feed
the dogs beforehand.
If you love animals and want
to make a difference, please
drop off food at the Centre for
Photography, 8 Kent Road,
Vincent or contact Neumann on
PIPING IT UP: Last week Thursday the East London Caledonian Society, with permission, flew
Scotland's flag at East London City Hall. This annual practice was first recorded in 1916. The East
London society was founded in 1876 and is the oldest extant Caledonian Society in southern Africa.
The flag derives from the experience of King Angus McFergus who was at war in AD 845. On the night
before the decisive battle, St Andrew appeared in a dream and promised victory. When Angus awoke,
he saw an X-shaped cloud formation against the blue sky. November 30 is the day St Andrew was
executed in AD 69. St Andrew died on an X-shaped cross. To celebrate St Andrew, dancers Jada
Simons, left, and Hannah Thorne from Piderit Highland Dance Studio performed outside the city hall.
They are doing the Highland Fling, a victory dance originally danced on his targe (shield) by a warrior,
with Dave Rankin providing the Scottish sounds
RESCUE MISSION: Fine art photographer and Buckaroo initiator, Marlene Neumann, right,
and team member Petro Pohlmann attend to a dog in need. Buckaroo is now on a mission to
make sure dogs belonging to needy people in townships and rural areas are spayed to
prevent the problem of stray dogs
“This show is a tribute to all
these women who broke the
are.”
With choreography by Emma
THE Sweethearts Foundation handed
over a much-needed wheelchair to Anita
Bezuidenhout, which was proudly
sponsored by The Page Group’s PnA
Stationers East London.
This was the fifth and final wheelchair
sponsored by PnA this year.
“We have been blessed this year to
partner with the Sweethearts Foundation
to raise awareness in our community for
Big catches on Kiwane coast
From page 16
Heaviest non-edible for the
day went to member Bernard
Hagemann with a raggy of
10.1kg.
Top points went to our
champion of the day and most
quirky member, Greg Timm
with a massive total of 1058
individual points, second on
points went to member Colin
Scheepers on 735 with third
going to visiting angler
Quinton de Swardt on 726
the disadvantaged in our community
waiting to receive wheelchairs.
“PnA Stationers is also the official
collection point for bread tags and plastic
bottle tops. A total of 450kg of bottle
tops or 50kg of bread tags, recycled by
the Sweethearts Foundation, pays for one
standard wheelchair.
“The East London community has been
fantastic in collecting and dropping of
which was also Quinton’ s first
ever RASSPL event.
The Ladies came to the
party as well, with some good
catches, namely member
Nadia Radcliffe who ended the
day on top with a decent
Bluefish of 2.5kg and second
going to member Lizel Smit
with a Eagle Ray of 2.4kg. Top
Openshaw with an impressive
Eagle Ray of 3.5kg.
“A whopping total of 294
fish were caught between the
55 entrants weighing in at a
total of 434.2kg – with all fish
being safely released to swim
another day. We are a 100%
catch-and-release fishing
league on which we pride
ourselves very much,” said
Blacktips spokesman, Shane
Smit.
Join us at our next
our beneficiary, Anita’s daughter, Kathy,
works at President School, one of the
schools that collects the most bottle tops
and bread tags for the fo u n d at i o n .
MADELEINE CHAPUT
LILYFONTEIN Grade 7 pupil, Sibulele Kentane was
recently selected for the South African Majorette
and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) team for
next year.
Kentane was the only majorette from the Eastern
Cape to be selected for the national team and is
also the first primary school pupil to be chosen
from the province.
“I love majorettes because it teaches you so
many good life skills and the friends you make
become like one big family,” Kentane said.
“Being selected is a feeling that you can’t
describe. I am very happy and excited for next
y e a r, ” she said.
Kentane, who took part in the SAMCA trials camp
last year in Pietermaritzburg, where she received
her provincial colours, has been a majorette since
2013.
Lilyfontein drum majorette coach Amy
Bezuidenhout said: “I am beyond ecstatic for her,
she has worked really hard to achieve this.
“Coaching her as been a dream as she is a
determined young lady who gives everything she
has got into her sport and aims high.”
Upon receiving her provincial colours, Kentane
qualified to try out for the national team.
With only two days to learn a display, Kentane
gave it her all and was rewarded with a spot on the
team.
“Sibulele has excellent leadership skills and
achieves anything she puts her mind to. She is a
wonderful role model for the younger majorettes.
“We are all very proud of her,” Bezuidenhout
said.
“The sport is challenging and it takes up a lot of
time, but it is all worth it in the end,” Kentane said.
