2. Principles of the primary and secondary surveys<br />

and the guidelines and techniques in the initial<br />

resuscitative and definitive care phases of treatment<br />

apply to all multiply injured patients.<br />

3. A patient’s medical history and the mechanism of<br />

injury are critical to identifying injuries.<br />

4. Pitfalls associated with the initial assessment<br />

and management of injured patients need to be<br />

anticipated and managed to minimize their impact.<br />

5. The primary survey should be repeated frequently,<br />

and any abnormalities will prompt a<br />

thorough reassessment.<br />

6. Early identification of patients requiring transfer<br />

to a higher level of care improves outcomes.<br />
