Jeff was back. She shoved the boxes under the
bed and scrambled to her feet.
“I’m….I’m in here. Just getting ready to leave.
Did you forget something?”
He appeared in the doorway, smiling. “I’ve
decided not to go to work today.”
“Oh. I’ll come back after rehearsal then. We
can…have a late lunch.” She fumbled for her bag, and
he eyed her items on the bed.
“Looking for something?”
“Uh….no, just my shoes, but….”
He crossed the floor, gathered her things and
placed them in her bag. “There you go honey.”
“Thanks.”
She brushed past him but he caught her arm.
“Just a minute.”
He crouched down and fished under the comforter
edge, then frowned. “I have your shoes Sophia,
but it looks like you already know that. You shouldn’t
have been snooping. But since you’re here, why don’t
you sign them for me? I’m a bit of a collector.”
Her legs, normally so strong, trembled as she
stepped backward.
Jeff stood up, gripping her shoes. “You know
what I like the most about these? How wonderfully
long the ribbons are.”
