the Hessian’s back. Blood pumped out his chest and<br />

back, then the fluid turned clear, like melting ice running<br />

through the cleaved openings.<br />

Withdrawing the sword, the Hessian’s eyes<br />

rolled back in his head, and then he staggered and fell<br />

over.<br />

<strong>The</strong> gaunt faced Hessian grinned madly. He<br />

picked up a bayonet and rammed it into Jeb’s side<br />

before Thomas could come to his aid. As the tracker<br />

keeled over, Thomas slashed the hand holding the<br />

bayonet. Standing defenseless, the Hessian smirked<br />

at Thomas and didn’t try to bolt. <strong>The</strong>y stood eye to<br />

eye and everything around them was still. Sarah heard<br />

some moaning from the fallen militia but nothing<br />

moved. Thomas was poised, tense and erect, waiting<br />

for the opportune moment to drive home the death<br />

knell.<br />

Sarah eased closer to the battle scene, trying<br />

to position herself to grab Hannah and flee. She was<br />

only ten feet away when Thomas made his move. As<br />

the Cutlass arched through the air, the Hessian stepped<br />

to evade the blow. <strong>The</strong> metallic blade hewed into the<br />

Hessian’s arm, hacking off a portion of his arm.<br />

Stumbling over, the Hessian fell into the<br />

carnage. <strong>The</strong> Cutlass came down again, cleaving into<br />

his thigh. Thomas raised his sword to deliver a killing<br />

blow, but the Hessian rolled away and then rose from<br />

the detritus with an axe in his hand.<br />

He wielded the axe quickly and hacked off<br />

Thomas’ arm; the sword lopped off with the appendage.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Hessian kicked Thomas to the ground and<br />

stood over him grinning. Another blow with the axe
