militia converged on the back corner of the house.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re was more musket fire. Men screamed and she<br />

smelt the pleasant aroma of gun powder wafting in<br />

the warm afternoon air. A stark contrast to the melee<br />

erupting behind her house.<br />

And then she thought of Hannah. <strong>The</strong> little<br />

girl would be returning from the brook, headed home<br />

down a trail toward the back of the homestead. Sarah<br />

ran to the corner of an outbuilding twenty feet from<br />

the fray. She scanned the woods for Hannah. <strong>The</strong> little<br />

girl was standing along the tree line, apparently frozen<br />

from the skirmish.<br />

Sarah looked and saw militia scattered over<br />

the ground. <strong>The</strong>re were two Hessians battling hand<br />

to hand with Thomas and a few others in the midst<br />

of the fallen bodies. Many of them hacked apart so<br />

badly portions of their limbs were dismembered. <strong>The</strong><br />

Hessians were soiled and their uniforms soaked in the<br />

claret stains. Sarah recognized a couple of the wounds.<br />

A shudder of trepidation ran through her.<br />

All gunfire had ceased. <strong>The</strong> taller Hessian held<br />

his bayonet on one hand wielded the butt of his pistol<br />

in the other like a serendipitous hammer. Thomas assaulted<br />

him with the Cutlass, hacking at the Hessians<br />

limbs, legs and shoulders, whenever possible. Jeb and<br />

the only remaining soldier wrestled the gaunt faced<br />

Hessian to the ground.<br />

She heard the sound of pistol fire and the soldier<br />

dropped to the ground.<br />

Thomas drove the Cutlass into the chest of the<br />

tall Hessian. <strong>The</strong> glossy metallic tip punched through
