Collondale mop-up
Community clean-up project
takes off after BCM ‘neglect’
MADELEINE CHAPUT
AFTER months of neglect from
Buffalo City Municipality,
members of the Collondale
community in Willow Park have
taken matters into their own hands.
The community recently held their second
neighbourhood market day whereby the
proceeds are contributed towards the costs of
hiring a garden service to keep the area
maintained.
Residents also contribute whatever they
can afford towards the maintenance of their
own neighbourhood.
“My niece and I realised we had to do
something about the state Collondale was in,
so in February we started this clean-up
project. We then elected a street committee,
who collect donations in their streets every
month. The project has now grown to receive
regular contributions from more than 30
residents,” Collondale resident Jenny
Vermeulen said.
With Vermeulen's guidance a group of 10
residents initiated the project, taking to the
streets to clean up the neighbourhood
themselves.
From cutting grass to cleaning gutters and
picking up litter, community members hired
weedeaters and laboured away.
“This year BCM has cut the grass once,
leaving cuttings on the ground because they
stated the area was too big. We started doing
the work ourselves, but now hire a garden
service once a month to ensure the area is
maintained,” said Vermeulen.
Despite being municipal land, BCM have
neglected regular up keep of the area, from
not cutting grass, to collecting refuse days
after the designated day.
Apart from raising funds to keep their
neighbourhood clean, the Collondale
community market days are also bringing
residents together.
“It is lovely to see such a positive thing
while there is so much negativity around. I
am very happy to support and to see the
improvement in our area,” said fellow
resident, Karin Luff.
Local businesses such as Amalinda
Nursery, Crafts Unlimited, Rob's Pallets, Tyres
Creations Versatile Couriers and many others
have also taken to contributing to the
success of Collondale's market days.
“I am not a member of the admin staff, but
I like to involve businesses with these market
days and make sure that they turn out
successful. The clean-up project has made a
huge difference to our community,” said Luff.
“You can really see the difference, the area
looks wonderful and children can actually
play on the fields.”
The community is now looking to level out
another piece of municipal land and remove
garbage from the area that has accumulated
over the years.
If anyone is willing to hire out a Backhoe
Loader (TLB) and driver in order to achieve
this, please contact Vermeulen on
083-648-1895.
Wynne was also recognised at the convention,
receiving the runner-up award in the young talent
categor y.
“I’m extremely proud of his achievement. Philip
did very well and has a knack for the art of
bonsai,” said Kingma.
Coming from a bonsai-loving family, Kingma has
been an avid enthusiast of the Japanese art for
most of his life.
The art form dates back thousand years and is a
form of horticulture whereby miniature trees are
cultivated using specific styles to shape and
create the illusion of full-size trees.
Kingma started helping his mother with her
collection in 1983, later starting his own collection
in 1988 with one wild fig tree.
Since then, Kingma’s collection has grown to
include 268 bonsai trees, ranging from wild olives
to baobab and bougainvillea trees among many
other species.
“The bougainvillea is definitely my favourite
tree. I have eight different flowering varieties and
when they are all in bloom, it is magnificent,”
Kingma said.
Kingma started growing his winning tree from a
seedling in 2002, taking 15 years to shape and
manipulate the tree’s design to the beautiful
artwork it is today.
“Bonsai is a living art. You need a lot of
patience, time and dedication. People often fail,
because they give up too easily and get
despondent when trees don’t respond well or die.”
He added that having a background knowledge
of different species of trees and understanding
their growth habits is fundamentally important for
anyone wanting to pursue the ancient art form.
“There must also be the element of creativity
and design in your work – without it you will
battle. There are so many different styles, some
more difficult than others, and you often need to
find creative ways to execute them without
harming the tree,” said Kingma.
this painstakingly beautiful art or more on the
Veronica was
diagnosed with FSGS
stage 4 kidney failure
and only has 7% kidney
function left, in addition
to that she has Lupus.
She has started with
dialysis but being a
are too much.
The family will be
them might be a
this procedure, in total
they will need R300000
and so far they have
concert is well-attended
so that more money can
be raised.
“This is the least I can
Veronica went on to
say that people should
NEW WHEELS: Ford Wildlife Foundation brand manager Lynda du Plessis hands over the keys to a brand new Ford Ranger to
We s s a ’s EESAY project co-ordinator for the Eastern Cape, Fuzile Dyosi
Picture: MADELEINE CHAPUT
Driven to help rural pupils
MADELEINE CHAPUT
THE Ford Wildlife Foundation handed
over a brand new Ford Ranger to the
Wildlife and Environment Society of
South Africa at the East London Ford
dealership last week.
The Ranger will be used for Wessa’s
Entrepreneurial, Empowerment and
Employment of South African Youth or
EESAY project in remote and rural areas
in the Eastern Cape
The project, which started last year,
currently aids 20 schools in the Eastern
Cape and another 20 in Kwazulu-Natal.
The main aim of the project is to
empower Grade 9, 10 and 11 pupils with
business entrepreneurial skills in an
effort to assist them once they have
mat riculated.
“Many youngsters in the areas come
from disadvantaged backgrounds and
will not have the funds to obtain tertiary
education. Our aim is to help give them
the skills they need to one day start their
own businesses,” We s s a ’s EESAY project
co-ordinator for the Eastern Cape, Fuzile
Dyosi said.
“By providing us with this vehicle, the
Ford Wildlife Foundation is essentially
making this project possible,” he said.
“I would not be able to do my job or
get to many of the rural schools we work
with without this Ranger [vehicle].”
We s s a ’s EESAY project, although
educational in nature, also teaches
students how to contribute to a
sustainable future through experiential
learning.
The Ford Motor Company of South
Africa (FMCSA) has been actively
involved in the conservation of wildlife
and ecosystems in South Africa and
Sub-Saharan Africa for 30 years, and to
date, has invested almost R40-million to
support more than 170 conservation
projects.
The Ford Wildlife Foundation was
established in 2014 in an effort to
facilitate FMCSA’s partnerships with
various organisations and projects.
This year FMCSA have, through the
Ford Wildlife Foundation, handed over
Ford Rangers at a total value of
R5.3-million to partner organisations to
support their work in the field.
“The work Wessa does is really
amazing and we’re very happy to have
made this partnership,” said Ford Wildlife
Foundation brand manager, Lynda du
Plessis.

Breidbach community takes action
Workshop held to strengthen
Breidbach Anti-Drug Coalition
STAFF REPORTER
FOLLOWING a growing concern
regarding substance abuse and
addiction in the Breidbach community,
various organisations, governmental and
non-governmental organisations held a
workshop on Tuesday.
The Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of
America (Cadca) and Breidbach
Anti-Drug Coalition (BAC) joined forces
with local-based governmental
institutions, non-governmental
organisations and local community
leaders to have the event.
The workshop was aimed to empower
more community members in
strengthening the BAC to effectively
work in developing a comprehensive
solution to the community’s substance
abuse problems.
In attendance and listening to social
worker and facilitator Lorraine
MacDougall, were educators of local
schools, clinic health promoters, clinic
board members, church members, SA
National Civic Organisation (Sanco)
executive members and members from
the sporting fraternity, as well as youth
members.
“Drug and alcohol abuse is
everywhere and affecting all
communities, but what is the community
doing to curb it?
“Form a coalition and recruit more
members that can work in this
communit y,” Macdougall said.
“It is not about individuals, we need to
build and implement strategies to create
community-level change which is
challenging, but mobilising your
community requires working with sector
representatives and reaching out to
groups and individuals who can become
important allies to your coalition.”
She explained that an effective
coalition knows how to work with
volunteers and other community
st a ke h o l d e r s .
“A vibrant, meaningful, effective
coalition becomes the group to which
others turn to when they need
information and resources and want to
generate community action.”
The workshop attendees were divided
into groups to discuss ways on how to
attract and recruit members and were
asked to make presentations.
After it was clear ever yone
understands the workshop’s purpose,
they agreed to become BAC members.
Cherylene Booth, Philasande Ndobeni,
Belinda Gysman, Ruth Swartz, Tully
Winnaar and Deidre Coetzee were
elected to assist Jowaine Jurie and
Jona-Lize Erasmus as data collectors,
with Desmond Coetzee as overseer and
Genevieve Thompson and Kelvin de
Lange his assistants.
BAC member Veronica Kock, who has
announced that she will soon leave the
community for good, was excited about
the overwhelming support and wished
the new incumbents well.
“I am excited about what has
happened here today and have full
confidence in the members coming on
board,” Kock said.
CHURCH CRUSADE: The
Breidbach community can look
forward to a massive crusade
when Apostle Angelo Smit and
some of his congregation
members from the East
London-based Crusade Church
will visit the area from Friday to
Sunday. During the period, the
community will be blessed with
healing services, counselling
sessions and will be served food
from a tent to be erected on the
corner of Dahlia Crescent and
Winvogel Street. ‘We are just
preaching the gospel according
to the Word of God and
targeting those people caught
up in drugs, alcohol abuse and
poverty to tell them there is
hope,’ said Smit. His youth
leader Mitchelle Whittington
said they will have programmes
for the youth during the day and
door-to-door visits will also be
conducted. ‘Teenage pregnancy
is rife in our communities and
our outreach is aimed in
bringing the message of hope,’
Schools had their
graduation ceremony
on November 10. Their
parents were treated
to some song items
and then got to watch
their children walk
across the stage and
graduate to go to
Grade 1 next year. The
children very happily
announced what they
wanted to be when
they grow up on
receiving their
certificate. A very big
thank you to the
MADELEINE CHAPUT
STARTING out in East London in
1980, Alert Engine Parts has
recently moved to brand new
corporate premises at 23 Bowls
Road.
Distributing engine
heavy commercial vehicles to the
Southern African automotive
aftermarket, Alert's new
selected from world-class
suppliers and tested for
performance, quality and value.
Their range now also includes
turbo charges, turbo cores,
clutch kits and filter kits in
addition to their existing
impressive range of stock.
Green initiative pays off
Alert pride themselves on and
are dedicated to giving friendly
service, quality advice and parts
The new premises offers the
ability to provide a great
shopping experience, as well as
the space needed for the store's
future growth.
“We definitely outgrew our
previous store. We can now offer
a bigger range and better
service to our customers, which
is what we continuously strive
fo r, ” Alert branch manager Sunil
Pillay said.
OUT the Green Box
Renewable Energy
Solutions has
contributed to growing
the green initiative in
East London and its
surrounding areas over
the past couple of
years, providing quality
renewable services to
businesses – and home
owners alike.
Owners of the
Southern Africa's
reputable engineering
company, Eya Bantu
Professional Services,
Craig Powell and Mike
Brown, noticed a gap in
the market where topnotch
engineering and
emerging renewable
energy solutions could
join forces, providing a
professional service in
the green industry.
Thus two years’ ago,
this dynamic pair seized
this “green” oppor tunit y
and introduced Out the
Green Box to East
London.
Over the past four
years, Out the Green
Box has grown
immensely, launching in
East London, Port
Elizabeth, George and
Cape Town. Energy
audits, system design
and installations of heat
pumps, PV panels,
inverters, charge
controllers, LED and
energy-efficient lighting,
off-grid solutions,
battery banks, UPS
systems, grid tied
systems, solar water
heaters, rain water
harvesting and solar
pool heating are among
the list of services Out
the Green Box offers.
East London's Pearce
Street was graced with
a new green presence
when Out the Green Box
opened their retail store
last year.
The shop features a
range of stock from
renewable energy
products available for
purchase, through to
display areas including
a range of LED Lighting
that would suit your
home, solar fridges,
solar geysers, batteries
– and, then, onto their
outdoor/adventure
section.
Areena Riverside
Resort, Olivewood Golf
Estate, InvestPro and S
Haynes & Associates
are among the few
major commercial
clients that have taken
the green step by
utilising Out the Green
Box’s services.
“It was not by choice
but necessity that I had
to change over from
Eskom, with their
continual decline in
service delivery and
their lack of will,
shocking service and
astronomical constant
unacceptable high
electricity tariffs as well
as their sewed
overhead monopolistic
cost increases.
“It was a bold
decision changing to
Solar PV electricity
which has already show
n good results and will
have a four year
payback on ROI. Out the
Green Box are an
amazing bunch of
people who are
extremely dedicated,
very professional and
serious in everything
they do. Their services
and prices are
incredible and I was
amazed at how fast and
efficient their
installation takes,”
Areena Riverside Resort
owner and operator, Ed
Rathbone said.
This year the store
furthered its inventory
into the outdoor
adventure category –
along with the
company's involvement
in adventure events.
“Being outside is part
of our corporate culture
and lifestyle. By
promoting outdoor
activities we can enjoy
our environment and
not just take from it,”
Craig Powell said.
The company’s retail
store took form to this
ideal by stocking
Merrell, Salomon, Black
Diamond, Falke, Versus,
Garmin and Suunto for
the East London
community to enjoy.
In preparation for this
year’s festive season,
Out the Green Box has
chosen to spread the
love by dropping their
prices just in time for
C h r i st m a s .
Pop into the Out the
Green Box store
between 7.30am and
4.30pm from Monday to
Saturday (Saturday
Big turnout
at DD fun run
EAST London’s festive season kicked off
with a bang when the Daily Dispatch
Summer Fun Run, supported by SPAR
Eastern Cape, was held in excellent
weather on Sunday.
After hosting the Family Challenge for
several years in the city, SPAR Eastern
Cape decided to throw their weight
behind the highly popular Summer Fun
Run, which has been part of the local
holiday programme for nearly four
decades. About 2000 runners
descended on Orient Beach on the
Esplanade to join in the fun on a day
that had something for everyone.
A variety of race options ranging from
8km to 4km were available, plus a
wheelchair event over 4km.
SPAR EC sponsorship and events
manager Alan Stapleton said they had
been thrilled with the response,
describing the event as “just what the
doctor ordered”.
“This really was a beautiful event and
IN CELEBRATION of
World Aids Day this
Friday, Crawfords Beach
Lodge will be hosting
their very first Golf Day
to raise funds for East
London’s Sophumelela
Cent re.
The non-profit
organisation works
closely with individuals
and families affected by
HIV/Aids and poverty.
The Sophumelela
Centre believes that
both HIV/Aids and
poverty groups should
have access to work
readiness skills and to
quality education and
health services in South
Africa.
Sophumelela aims to
restore a sense of
purpose and
hopefulness in
communities by
providing educational,
employment mentor
and health restoration
programmes, homebased
care and through
connecting with
vulnerable children.
The East Coast-based
beach lodge, Crawfords,
boasts stunning
accommodation with
breathtaking sea and
beach views, and
featuring many
activities for the entire
fa m i l y.
By partnering with
the Kempston Group,
they hope to raise a
substantial amount of
funds for this year’s
beneficiary of the
Crawfords Beach Lodge
Golf Day.
The event will
officially commence
with a shot-gun start at
12.30pm on Friday at
the East London Golf
Club.
Four balls are
available at R1400,
which includes a four
ball alliance, two scores
something I am sure we can grow as we
work together with all those involved,”
he said. “From the pre-race buzz to the
drum majorettes, Border Bulldogs
taking part and Algoa FM Afternoon
Drive programme keeping everyone
informed, it was a great start to the
holiday period.”
Daily Dispatch marketing manager
Penelope Smith said the turnout this
year had been great. “The support we
received will go a long way to make this
one of the biggest races in East London
and we thank everyone for coming out
and taking part.”
While Stapleton paid tribute to the
winners of the various events, he
acknowledged that the day was all
about having fun.
“The winners won and the runners-up
were happily disappointed, but this was
all about providing the East London
people with a chance to go out and
enjoy themselves through healthy
who took part in the race. It was
amazing to have them involved with the
‘Seal training’ for six
THANDEKA NTLONTI
SIX Selborne College pupils have
been selected to take part in the
South African Water Polo training
squad in Port Elizabeth from
December 8 to 12.
The boys are from Selborne’s under-16 and U17 water
polo teams.
The U16s are Devon Copeland, Dean Stokes and
Joshua Reeves, while Ridge Snelling, Troy Mynhardt
and Nolan Kemp will be in the U17 team.
“I think the training camp is a great opportunity to
learn from a higher calibre of coaches and players to
prove myself in water polo. It’s a competitive sport,
but it’s fun and a team sport and you meet many
people,” Devon said.
U17 player Ridge Snelling said he is humbled by
the opportunity to be chosen for such a prestigious
event and that it has always been his dream to
represent his country since discovering water polo
as his passion .
“I would never have gotten to this level without my
teammates, coaches, my family who have always
supported me, and God who has blessed me,” Ridge
said.
Old Boys fight it out in tournament
THE fourth annual
Stor-Age Old Boys
Tens (OBX) sports
tournament was a
huge success, with
25 teams
representing the old
boy associations of
prestigious schools
from around the
country battling it
out to be crowned
champions.
Held at the
Stor-Age Pirate’s
Rugby club in
Johannesburg,
OBX17 teamed up
with Stor-Age, South
Africa’s leading
self-storage brand, to
host an event that
was bigger and
better than ever
before. After a tough
two days, the
Middelburg Old Boys
rugby team took
home the cup for the
third year. The
tournament also
included a netball
division where the
Meyersdal Scorpions
won the title.
The competing
teams, combined
with the support of
the 4000 spectators
over the two days,
raised about
R300 000 for the
E d u c at i o n
Endowment Fund.
These funds will go
towards bursars and
education nominated
by the winning teams
in their respective
divisions
