Celebrate the Carnival season in the<br />

Nordic fashion with this family-friendly<br />

day at Nordia House! Throw on your<br />

favorite costumes, bring your whole<br />

family, and join us for an afternoon of<br />

crafts, games, fastelavnsboller, snacks,<br />

beverages, and a costume contest.<br />

Fastelavn, or Nordic Carnival, is a<br />

day for children and adults alike to<br />

dress up and have fun. This February<br />

holiday falls before Lent season during<br />

a time of festivities and celebration.<br />

Throw on your favorite costume and<br />

win the costume contest, play games,<br />

make fastelavnsris (decorate tree<br />

branches), and slå katten af tønden<br />

(hit the cat out of the barrel). Who will<br />

be crowned kattekonge (king of cats),<br />

and kattedronning (queen of cats)?<br />

Swede and NNW member Kristin<br />

Haas will share her technique for<br />

making semlor buns, the cardamomscented<br />

buns filled with almond paste<br />

and whipped cream. Originally the<br />

buns were only baked on Fettisdagen<br />

(Shrove Tuesday) but are now<br />

commonly eaten throughout Lent.<br />
