About the Flag<br />
The American flag. As you can see, the flag has 13 equal<br />
horiz<strong>on</strong>tal stripes of red and white. There is a blue<br />
rectangle in the upper hoist-side corner bearing 50<br />
small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset<br />
horiz<strong>on</strong>tal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating<br />
with rows of five stars. The 50 stars represent the 50<br />
states of the United States of America. The 13 stripes<br />
represent the 13 original col<strong>on</strong>ies. The blue color <strong>on</strong> the<br />
flag stands for loyalty, devoti<strong>on</strong>, truth, justice, and<br />
friendship. The red color <strong>on</strong> the flag symbolizes<br />
courage, zeal, and fervency, while white denotes purity<br />
and rectitude of c<strong>on</strong>duct; comm<strong>on</strong>ly referred to by its<br />
nickname of Old Glory.<br />
The design and colors have been the basis for some<br />
other flags, including Chile, Liberia, Malaysia, and<br />
Puerto Rico.
