Introductory
The United States of America has a lot of history for
only being in existence for a little over 240 years, yet
with the small introductory we hope you can find the
time and interest to expand your knowledge of this
great nation.
It started when Britain's American colonies broke with
the mother country in 1776. It was eventually
recognized as the new nation of the United States of
America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783. During
the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added
to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the
North American continent and acquired a number of
overseas possessions. The two most traumatic
experiences in the nation's history were the Civil War
(1861-65), in which a northern Union of states defeated
a secessionist Confederacy of 11 southern slave states,
and the Great Depression of the 1930s, an economic
downturn during which about a quarter of the labor
force lost its jobs. Buoyed by victories in World Wars I
and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US
remains one of the world's most powerful nation-state.
Since the end of World War II, the economy has
achieved relatively steady growth, low unemployment
and inflation, and rapid advances in technology.
America also has a diverse culture that shares a
passion of various ideologies that can be found strewn
throughout the country. There is practically every
nationality that has immigrated to the nation in hopes

for a better life. The majority of the people learn English
and use it as a communication amongst everyone that
lives in the country. The second most spoken language
is Spanish.
The land is very diverse. You have mountains, plains,
deserts, tropics, and more. The highest point in the US
is Denali (formerly named Mount McKinley) at over
20,000 feet. The lowest point in the US is Death Valley
located in Eastern California, which is at 282 feet below
sea level. The United States of America is one of the
biggest countries in size of land but also in population,
which is over 300 million people. You can drive from
the Atlantic coast all the way to the Pacific coast if
desired and you can experience 6-time zones with it!
Because of its diverse migration throughout the years
of its existence, there is a lot of different foods to enjoy.
Hamburgers, hot dogs, chili, grilled steaks, apple pies,
pumpkin pies, pancakes, pizzas, and more are enjoyed
throughout the country. If you look deep into their
origins, you will see that they originally come from
other countries.
There are a lot of famous and important people that
have helped changed the world for better. Such people
include Martin Luther King Junior, Cesar Chavez, and
Susan B. Anthony. There are thousands of pages of
history on America that can be researched. There is
equally over thousands of miles of beautiful and
breathtaking land to explore and hundreds of cities full
of culture to experience. America is a fascinating
country that will keep you entertained.

About the Flag
The American flag. As you can see, the flag has 13 equal
horizontal stripes of red and white. There is a blue
rectangle in the upper hoist-side corner bearing 50
small, white, five-pointed stars arranged in nine offset
horizontal rows of six stars (top and bottom) alternating
with rows of five stars. The 50 stars represent the 50
states of the United States of America. The 13 stripes
represent the 13 original colonies. The blue color on the
flag stands for loyalty, devotion, truth, justice, and
friendship. The red color on the flag symbolizes
courage, zeal, and fervency, while white denotes purity
and rectitude of conduct; commonly referred to by its
nickname of Old Glory.
The design and colors have been the basis for some
other flags, including Chile, Liberia, Malaysia, and
Puerto Rico.

Quotes about U.S.A.
My dream is that as the years go on... that America will come
into the full light of the day when all shall know that she
puts human rights above all other rights and that her flag is
the flag not only of America but of humanity. What other
great people has devoted itself to this exalted ideal?
~Woodrow Wilson, Presidential Address at Independence
Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, 1914 July 4 th
When an American says that he loves his country, he means
not only that he loves the New England hills, the prairies
glistening in the sun, the wide and rising plains, the great
mountains, and the sea. He means that he loves an inner
air, an inner light in which freedom lives and in which a man
can draw the breath of self-respect. ~Adlai Stevenson
“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I
especially, are descended from immigrants and
revolutionists.”
― Franklin D. Roosevelt
“America is the greatest engine of innovation that has ever
existed, and it can't be duplicated anytime soon, because it
is the product of a multitude of factors: extreme freedom of
thought, an emphasis on independent thinking, a steady
immigration of new minds, a risk-taking culture with no
stigma attached to trying and failing, a noncorrupt
bureaucracy, and financial markets and a venture capital
system that are unrivaled at taking new ideas and turning
them into global products.”
― Thomas L. Friedman
