Introductory
Halloween evolved from the ancient Celtic holiday of
Samhain, but Halloween today is less about the fear of
ghosts and ghouls and more about costumes and candy. The
Celts, who used the day to mark the end of the harvest
season and the beginning of winter, also believed that the
change of seasons was a bridge to the world of the dead.
They thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside
on this night, so they began wearing masks and costumes to
avoid being recognized as human.
Halloween is celebrated on the last day of October each year.
Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is
associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with
darkness and death. There are many activities during this
celebration that children and adults can enjoy together.
Such events include apple bobbing, which has a person
trying to bite into an apple while it is floating on water. It is
not that easy to do! Some prefer to tell ghost stories around
a campfire or at home. The most important event for children
is to dress up as something scary and knock on doors in the
neighborhood to scream trick-or-treat and hope to get some
candy or chocolate.
In America, many spend the time to decorate their yards and
houses with models of ghosts, zombies, ghouls and carved
pumpkins that have candles in them to look spooky at night.
They are called Jack O’Lanterns. The idea of such lanterns
on Halloween dates back to 18th-century Ireland when a
mean and nasty blacksmith named Jack was denied entry
into heaven. He was so rotten that the devil didn’t want Jack
in hell either - too much competition for him! So, Jack’s

spirit was condemned to wander the earth for eternity. But
one request the devil did grant Jack was to give him
something to light his way. What he got was a burning coal
ember which Jack placed inside a carved-out turnip. Thus,
the tradition of the Jack O’ Lantern was born. To this day,
people in Ireland still carve out turnips and illuminate them
with stumps of candle. They’re then placed in a window or
put on a gate post outside the house. Here in the United
States, the custom was continued by millions of Irish
emigrants who carved out pumpkins because they were a lot
more plentiful than turnips.
Halloween can be pretty scary. There are some that fear the
event. These folks have Samhainophobia, which is a morbid
fear of Halloween. The origin of the term traces back to the
Celtic word Samhain, meaning All Hallows Eve to Christians,
though Samhain predates the introduction of Christianity to
the region it originated in, Northern Ireland, by at least 4000
years. There are other phobias that people may have such
as phasmophobia (fear of ghosts), Wiccaphobia (fear of
witchcraft), or nyctophobia (fear of darkness)? We would
imagine that they too wouldn’t be so thrilled of celebrating
Halloween.
Halloween wasn’t always popular. Trick-or-treating was
brought to America by the Irish and became popular during
the early 20th century, but died out during WWII when
sugar was rationed. After the rationing ended in 1947,
children's magazine "Jack and Jill," the radio program "The
Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet," and the "Peanuts" comic
strip all helped to re-popularize the tradition of dressing up
in costumes and asking for candy from door-to-door. By
1952, trick-or-treating was hugely popular again.

Halloween, as you know, is celebrated in Ireland and the
United States, yet many countries celebrate a type of
Halloween very similarly. Teng Chieh is a Chinese festival
that honors their deceased loved ones. Lanterns shaped like
dragons and other animals are hung around houses and
streets to help guide the spirits back to their earthly homes.
To honor their deceased loved ones, family members leave
food and water by the portraits of their ancestors. Halloween
celebrations in Hong Kong are known as Yue Lan or the
“Festival of the Hungry Ghosts” during which fires are lit,
and food and gifts are offered to placate potentially angry
ghosts who might be looking for revenge. Los Dias de los
Muertos or the Day of the Dead Festival is a celebration that
honors those from the dead and to help support their
spiritual journey in Mexico.
Yes, Halloween is a celebration that can bring people
together and be enjoyed in many ways. Perhaps one day you
and the family will travel to some of the biggest Halloween
specials in the country. Both Salem, Massachusetts, and
Anoka, Minnesota, are self-proclaimed as the Halloween
capitals of the world. Boston, Massachusetts, holds the
record for the most Jack O’Lanterns lit at once (30,128). The
Village Halloween parade in New York City is the largest
Halloween parade in the United States. The parade includes
50,000 participants and draws over 2 million spectators
each year. Maybe it is time to convince the family to go to
this parade or be in Salem, Massachusetts, Anoka,
Minnesota on this holiday. Halloween is a favorite amongst
children, and you will be surprised how much you can learn
about this event. Don’t hesitate to research and read more
about Halloween in the near future.

Jack and Nina have been lost in the forest for some time.
“Since it is Halloween, I may as well tell you of an old Irish
folklore told to me by my grandparents when I was but a
small child,” Jack says.
“I rather not. We should try to get out of this dreaded forest
first,” Nina replies.
“While we are trying to figure out how to find home again, I
will keep talking to calm our nerves,” Jack suggests.
Nina only rolls her eyes, rather not hearing some old Irish
ghost story of some kind.
“You see, The Beasts of Tuamgraney is a story that takes
place in a wooded area just outside the town of Tuamgraney
in County Clare during Halloween, also known as Samhain
to some,” Jack explains.
As the two continue through the woods, Jack continues with
the story said to him as a small child during Halloween. “This
tale of terror could be seen as a person witnessing a battle
between good and evil or a simple warning to Irish travelers
to beware of where they choose to wander.
“I think we should have done just that. Be more aware of
The howling of wolves can be heard. Nina shrieks and takes
Jacks arms as they continue walking. Jack pays no mind and
continues with the story once told to him. Now, this young
man wandered in among the trees, and a strange sensation
came over him of mixed feelings such as fear and sadness.
He decided as he was carrying a stout stick that he would
forge forward.
Nina thinks the story is about them, as she listens to Jack’s
story. Although she doesn’t particularly want to hear a
haunted tale, it does soothe her to know that she isn’t alone
The sounds of owls and the howling of wolves stop. Crickets
are chirping and the occasional brisk wind blows among the
few leaves left on the trees on this autumn night. Jack
continues with the story. Unable to rid himself of this feeling
he almost turned back when he noticed that the trees
seemed thicker and he could not find the path home. His
imagination started to run wild with images of those times
of cruel, bloody sacrifices and rituals, stopping still he felt
lost in the woods on this day. She can’t entirely blame him.
After all, she did want to see him today in hopes to get just
one kiss. Jack stops for a moment on the trail and then thinks.
How was that story…oh yes, as he continues with it?
Suddenly a movement in the bushes caught his eye seeing a
huge black dog he thought that it must be a stray wandering
far from home until it turned to face him. The dog stared at
him with large glowing red eyes before disappearing.
heart nearly took flight when he saw that large dog and now
a large hare that jumps in front of him, which had an
The forest trees seem to get thicker the deeper the two
teenagers travel. Jack all the while unfazed at the situation
continues walking ahead leading Nina deeper into the woods
and telling the story once said to him.
Fear now coursed through the man’s veins as a cat leaped
A few wild rabbits jump across the trail into other bushes as
Nina screams and Jack jumps. He then looks at Nina and
says, “Don’t be afraid. I think we just walked in a circle. I will
remember how to get out of this vast forest eventually. Just
listen to my story, and the trip won’t seem so long,” he
suggests. He then continues with the story. Terrified beyond
reason the man would have fled back the way he had come
seeing all those animals with red glowing eyes, but the
ground seemed to spin and rise, so he ran blindly forward
to stay calm in such dark hours. He then proceeds. As the
he could see two figures.
continues. The man watches both the ram and the deer. They
More about Halloween
The Celts believed that the passage of a day began with
darkness and progressed into the light. The same notion
explains why Winter – the season of long, nights – marked
the beginning of the year and proceeded into the lighter days
of Spring, Summer, and Autumn. So, the 1st of November,
Samhain, was the Celtic New Year, and the celebrations
began at sunset of the day before its Eve.
During the 8th century, the Catholic Church designated
the first day of November as All Saints Day - all Hallows.
Thus, All Hallows Eve became Hallowe'en. At the reunion at
All Hallows, when the sheep and cattle were brought back
from the summer pastures, fires were lit to mark the end of
the period of growth and to herald the new year. The
Hallowe'en fire was used long ago to supply light and to
rekindle the domestic fire. The crops would have been
harvested and the turf saved by then.
Today's trick-or-treating tradition mainly developed from
soul parades that took place on Halloween in England. Poor
people would beg from door to door, asking for food or money
in exchange for praying for souls to be delivered from
purgatory. Eventually, children took over the tradition, and
people began baking sweet soul cakes to give to the young
revelers. In the United States, trick-or-treating didn't
become widely popular until the 1940s, when communities
sought wholesome Halloween activities to discourage kids
from vandalism and another mischief.
