One can get a total of 45 points in this adventure. Each
correct answer without cutting the answers in half counts
as 2 points. If you do not know the answer to the question,
then you can cut the answers in half. If you answer the
question correctly, then it counts as 1 point. In either case
(answers reduced in half or not) you get 0 points if you
answer the question incorrectly. There is also a bonus trivia
question worth 5 points. Once you have answered twenty
trivia questions, then add the points together on your score
Introductory
Two thousand years ago, over a million lions roamed
throughout regions that covered Europe, Syria, Israel, Iran,
Iraq, Pakistan, and India. Today they live only in parts of
Africa and certain small parts of India. There are two species
of lions. They are the Panthero leo leo (African Lion), which
number around 20,000. The second species is the Panthero
leo persica (Asiatic Lion), which are only approximately 300
alive and protected parts of India.
Lions are one of the big five cats in the genus Panthera and
is a member of the family Felidae. The other four members
are the tiger, jaguar, leopard, and snow leopard.
Lions are large animals that reach a length of 10 feet and
can weigh anywhere from 350 pounds up to 500 pounds on
average. The males have manes, while the female does not.
Most animals keep a reasonable distance from lions. Lions
are carnivores and love to hunt for meat each day. A lion’s
roar can be heard up to 5 miles away! What animal wouldn’t
shiver from the sound of a mighty roar? Fortunately, lions
like to sleep around 16 to 20 hours a day to preserve energy.
A male lion protects his territory while the female lionesses
go in a group to hunt for food during the nights. When an
animal is claimed, the group brings it back to the male lion
who gets to eat first. There is usually a pecking order when
it comes to a claim. It is first the males, then the female lions,
and last the cubs.
As you may know, male lions are territorial and will roar and
use scent markings to establish their domain. They rarely
leave their realm and that is why the lionesses go out
hunting. While the male lion guards his territory, there
might be a coalition of 2 or 3 male lions who try to oust or
kill the male lion that claims his area for his pride.
Lions are the only cats to live in groups which are also called
a pride. Many dangers can occur for lions. Anything from
spotted hyenas stealing food from a lioness to killing a cub.
There are also diseases such as ticks or tuberculosis that
can end a life of a lion quickly.
As more territory is taken from lions by humans, the
dwindling population will continue to decrease. Lions will be
on the verge of extinction if we do not provide solutions to
ensure their survival on this planet that we share.
If lucky, a male lion in the wild can live 12 years and a female
lion up to 15 years. Lions are a favorite amongst wild
animals, and you will be surprised how much you can learn
about them. Don’t hesitate to research and read more about
lions in the near future. They are a genuinely fascinating
animal, and there is so much more to learn that hasn’t been
added to this trivia gamebook!

A mighty lion lays in the grassland keeping a watch on his
three cubs. He must protect his territory from invading male
lions and hyenas. He must make sure that the cubs are safe
from any harm. As the cubs’ play, it becomes evening, and
the mother lioness and her group leave to hunt.
“Father, can you tell us a story while we rest after playing all
day?” asks one of the cubs.
“Yes, lay down next to me, and I shall think of a story to tell,”
the father says while surveying his area.
The cubs rest near their father as he begins to tell an old story
said to him long ago when he was but a small cub: There was
a young herd boy named Jabu (jah'-boo). He took great pride
in the way in which he cared for his father's cattle. And his
father had many cows - over 25! It was quite a task to keep
these silly creatures out of trouble, away from the farmer's
mealies (corn) and out of the dangerous roads. Jabu had
some friends who also kept their fathers' cattle, but none of
them had even half the herd Jabu did! And none of them
were as careful as Jabu. It was a sign of Jabu's father's pride
in his boy that he entrusted such a large herd to such a
young boy.
giant male lion roars towards the intruder as it jumps up and
runs away. The lion shakes its mane before gently continuing
with the story: One day as he sat atop a small koppie (hill)
watching the animals feed and braiding long thin strips of
grass into bangles for his sisters, Jabu's friend Sipho (see'-
poh) came running to him. "Have you heard the news, my
friend?" panted Sipho. Before Jabu could even answer,
Sipho rushed on to tell him. "Bhubesi, the lion, has been
seen in these parts. Last night Bhubesi attacked and killed
one of Thabo's (tah'-boh) father's cows. The men of the village
The male lion continues with the story: Jabu wasn't surprised
by this news. His keen eyes had seen the spoor of the lion -
- his left-over kill, his prints here-and-there in the soft earth.
Jabu had respect for the king of the beasts. And since
Bhubesi's pattern was to hunt at night when the cattle were
safely within the kraal (/krawl/ "corral"), Jabu had seen no
reason to alert the village of Bhubesi's presence. But the
killing of a cow! "I wonder," thought Jabu to himself, "if the
cow was not left out of the kraal?" Thabo was known to be a
sloppy herd boy, a fellow who ran with his head in the
clouds. He had been known to forget a cow or two before.
for the day and watch with me as the men set the traps!"
Jabu slowly shook his head as he looked at Sipho and
smiled. "You know me, friend," he returned Sipho's address.
"I cannot put the cattle back into the kraal so early in the
day! They need to be driven to the river before they go home."
Vultures are close by eating the remains of an old elephant.
The hyenas that were close by shift their attention to the
remains of the elephant. The lion father continues with the
story: Sipho smiled. "Yes, I thought you would say this. But
I wanted to tell you anyway. I will see you later, friend,
perhaps by the fire tonight!" And Sipho ran toward the village
with a final wave to Jabu.
the cows together. He waved his intonga (ee-ntah'-gah
Jabu. With a grin, Jabu began to take them to water.
The night is full of sounds of various wild animals. Some are
hunting, and others are resting. The male continues with the
story: Jabu bathed his feet in the cold refreshing river as the
cows drank their fill. It was a beautiful sunny Autumn day,
and if his mind had not been so busy thinking about the lion
and the traps the men were setting, Jabu would probably be
shaping the soft river clay into small cow figurines for his
young brother. Then Jabu heard a sound that stole his
breath from him. "Rrrrroar!" came the bellow. The cows all
froze, a wild look coming into their eyes. "Rrrroarrrrrrr...." It
was Bhubesi, and he was near!
With the bellies full from the elephant the vultures fly away,
and the hyenas leave to better things. The male lion continues
with the story: There was no time to drive the animals home;
the lion was much too close. Jabu slowly rose, looking
carefully around, his hand clenched on his staff. He walked
purposefully, trying not to show the fear that made his knees
tremble, pulling the cattle together into a tight circle. The
cows trusted him, and they obeyed.
"Rrrrroarr...oarr..oarr...aaa!" Jabu listened. Bhubesi was not
declaring his majesty or might....it sounded more like a cry
for help. Several more bellows and Jabu knew Bhubesi was
in trouble. Somehow this took most of the boy's fear of him.
Gripping his staff, Jabu quietly began to walk toward the
lion's cry.
The cubs feel safe as they listen to their father: Yes, indeed,
the lion was in trouble. Jabu found him in a small clearing
several meters across the river. He was caught in one of the
traps laid by the men of the village. His head was firmly
wedged in the barred structure, and the more he struggled,
the tighter the snare became. Jabu stood and stared. Never
before had he seen the king of the animals so near. He
indeed was a majestic animal. And a large part of his heart
was sore for the creature. Then the lion saw the boy. "Hawu!
Mfana! (hah'woo mfah'nah "Oh! Boy!") It is good that you are
here. Please, help me. I am caught in this stupid trap, and I
"Jabu, Jabu," Sipho came running from behind Jabu. "The
lion has been caught in the trap near the river! You and your
cows missed all the adventure!" Jabu turned and smiled at
More about lions
Approximately 600 lions are killed every year by tourists on
trophy hunts. An estimated 60% of these “trophies” are
shipped to the U.S.
In Botswana, 90% of the free-roaming lions are infected with
FIV, the feline equivalent of human HIV.
The earliest recorded images of lions are found in the
Chauvet Cave in southern France dating back 32,000 years.
Since the origin of civilization, images of lions have been
used to represent majesty, awe, and leadership. Their
depictions can be found in most civilizations including
Paleolithic cultures, Egyptian, Grecian, Roman, Middle
Eastern, Persian, Jewish, Christian, many gnostic
traditions, Arthurian legends, Islamic traditions, Hindu-
Buddhist traditions, and Chinese and Eastern Asian
traditions.
The most famous lion in ancient Greece mythology is the
Nemean lion, which was killed by Heracles. It is represented
in the constellation Leo and is also a sign of the Zodiac.
Lions do not purr. The only member of the big cat family that
does is the leopard.
At the base of each lion’s whisker is a black spot. The
patterns these spots make are unique to each lion, similar
to a human’s fingerprint. Scientists are able to tell lions
apart by looking at these patterns.
When a lion curls up its top lip and pulls a funny face, it is
usually using its Jacobson’s organ, which is a small area on
the roof of the mouth that allows a lion to “taste” the air. By
sticking out their tongues and showing their teeth, which is
known as the “flehmen response,” they can determine if
there is food close by and if it’s worth eating.
Lions have a well-developed sense of hearing, which is
enhanced by movable ears that can adjust to the direction
of a sound. A lion can hear prey up to a mile away.
The griffin is a mythic creature with the body of a lion and
the head and wings of an eagle. This powerful creature
symbolizes various qualities, such as the sun, wisdom,
vengeance, strength, and salvation. The creature’s dual
nature also can symbolize Jesus Christ’s resurrection or the
strength and wisdom of God.
A lion’s body is the foundation of one of Egypt’s largest single
structures, the Great Sphinx.
The lion hunt is an ancient symbol. Ancient political leaders
would often draw their legitimacy from depicting their
triumph over a lion. The real slaughter of lions, however, has
mainly occurred only in the past 200 years.
Lions are at risk of extinction by the year 2020 unless drastic
measures are taken to save them.
In Swahili, a lion is called Simba.
