Easier than separates, a jumpsuit can<br />

be just as glamorous as a dress, if not<br />

more so. The key is the fabrication,<br />

cut, and pairing the right accessories.<br />

Choose metallics, velvets or satins to<br />

ensure that this piece is dressy enough<br />

for NYE. A dressy jumpsuit should<br />

also be tailored and show some skin<br />

be it your neck and collar bone, arms,<br />

shoulders or décolletage. Stick with<br />

a jumpsuit in monochromatic black,<br />

white or metallic to keep on point for<br />

the celebratory feel. Finish off this<br />

look with a statement earring and a<br />

dressy structured clutch. Sorry gals, a<br />

CHIC WARM COATS<br />

It will most likely be cold on NYE.<br />

Don’t throw on any old winter coat<br />

just to stay warm. Your outfit is the<br />

whole package and what you wear<br />

on top needs to be practical yet<br />

chic enough to compliment what is<br />

underneath. No puffers here. Think<br />

wool capes, faux-fur or shearling.<br />

SHOW STOPPING BOOTS<br />

Weather can make it tricky on NYE<br />

to feel sexy in the shoe department<br />

while still keeping your piggies and<br />

your gams protected and warm. Opt<br />

for a bootie or better yet, an OTK<br />

boot that will cover your entire leg.<br />

The trick here is to choose a <strong>style</strong><br />

and material that says ‘Party’ such<br />

as satin, metallic, velvet, appliqués<br />

or a sculptural heel. This is the one<br />

night you may need to pick <strong>style</strong> over<br />

comfort and wear a heel.<br />

A blowout for curly hair won’t last the night on a damp evening.<br />

the one night that you can be over-the-top with your mani.<br />

DO wear the sheerest of sheer hose if you will be hopping<br />

between parties in frigid weather. They will allow you to wear a<br />

sexy dress while keeping your legs warm.<br />

DO wear a chic, yet warm coat. You want to make an entrance,<br />

In 1837, Charles Lewis Tiffany,<br />

just twenty five years old,<br />

borrowed one thousand<br />

dollars from his father and<br />

opened a stationary and fancy<br />

goods store with partner, John B.<br />

Young, at 259 Broadway in New<br />

York City. It is here that American<br />

<strong>style</strong> would be defined. Designs<br />

that were elegant and timeless,<br />

they began with silverware and<br />

quickly moved into jewelry design.<br />

In 1886 Tiffany & Co. introduced the<br />

engagement ring as we know it today<br />

— the Tiffany® Setting —and the<br />

company prospered like never before.<br />

By the 20th century Tiffany & Co. was<br />

America’s finest and most renowned<br />

merchant of jewels, timepieces and<br />

luxury household accessories. They<br />

had over one thousand employees, and<br />

shops in London, Paris, and Geneva.<br />

With the legacy set in motion, Tiffany<br />

designers have continued to impress<br />

new standards and revolutionize the<br />

jewelry industry for two centuries.<br />

Their collections have always<br />

effectively captured the essence of the<br />

times and have been an undeniable<br />

representation of glamour and luxury.<br />

None more famous or awe inspiring<br />

than the Tiffany Diamond.<br />

One of the largest and finest fancy<br />

yellow diamonds in the world, the<br />

Tiffany Diamond has become a<br />

symbol of the highest standards of<br />

quality and craftsmanship established<br />

with the founding of Tiffany & Co.<br />

over eight generations ago. The<br />

287.42-carat stone was purchased by<br />

Charles Lewis Tiffany for $18,000.<br />

The stone’s acquisition solidified Mr.<br />

Diamond is placed in the hands of a gold wire angel for a holiday<br />

display by famed window designer Gene Moore. The bright<br />

and shining stone could easily be seen from across the street.<br />

The rough stone was brought to Paris,<br />

where Tiffany’s chief gemologist, Dr.<br />

George Frederick Kunz, supervised<br />

the cutting of the diamond into a<br />

cushion-shape brilliant weighing<br />

128.54 carats with an unprecedented<br />

82 facets—24 more facets than the<br />

traditional 58-facet brilliant cut. The<br />

stone is just over an inch wide and<br />

seven-eighths of an inch from top to<br />

bottom.<br />

The Tiffany Diamond was the<br />

highlight of the jeweler’s awardwinning<br />

exhibits at the great world’s<br />

fairs, including the 1893 World’s<br />

Colombian Exposition in Chicago;<br />

the 1901 Pan-American Exposition<br />

in Buffalo, New York; the 1933-34<br />

Century of Progress in Chicago; and<br />

the 1939-40 World’s Fair in New York.<br />

Later appearances included De Beers’<br />

100th anniversary celebration in<br />

Kimberley, South Africa in 1971;<br />

the re-opening of Tiffany’s stores in<br />

London in 1986 and Tokyo in 1996;<br />

and the 2006 Bejeweled by Tiffany<br />

exhibition at Somerset House in<br />

London.<br />

The diamond has appeared in the<br />

windows of the Fifth Avenue flagship<br />

store on one occasion. Tiffany’s<br />

renowned window designer Gene<br />

Moore placed the diamond in the<br />

hands of a floating gold wire angel for<br />

a 1955 holiday display. Passersby were<br />

amazed to see that the diamond was<br />

clearly visible from across the street.<br />

Many people have asked if the Tiffany<br />

Diamond is for sale. Indeed, it once<br />

was. Tiffany’s November 17, 1972<br />

advertisement in The New York Times<br />

wittily announced the un-set stone<br />

could be purchased for $5,000,000<br />

(the equivalent of $25,800,000 today).<br />

In a witty ad placed in The New York<br />

Times, Tiffany announces that the<br />

Diamond may be purchased<br />

for $5,000,000 (the equivalent of<br />

$25,800,000 today) within a<br />

24-hour period.<br />

The Diamond appears as part of a<br />

celebration of the National Gem Collection<br />

at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of<br />

Natural History in Washington, D.C.<br />

ONLY TWO WOMEN HAVE EVER<br />

WORN THE TIFFANY DIAMOND.<br />

Mrs. Mary Whitehouse wore a lavish<br />

necklace set with the diamond for<br />

Rhode Island; and Audrey Hepburn®<br />

of diamond ribbons surrounding the<br />

diamond in publicity photographs for<br />

When I think back to the beginning<br />

of this process, the suggestion of<br />

of varied emotions. In my case, the<br />

inaugural rush of nerves and doubt<br />

while sketching and gem buying<br />

leads to relief as I submit plans to my<br />

silversmith. This momentary pause<br />

for joy and relaxation is broken like<br />

a dam when samples arrive and<br />

the game of minuscule alteration<br />

begins. Stones are switched, bands<br />

are thinned by millimeters, and<br />

chain is re-cut until it feels like I<br />

could wear the pieces forever. In<br />

these moments, my intuition kicks<br />

into overdrive.<br />

DESIGNING A COLLECTION IS A<br />

TIMELY PROCESS THAT INCLUDES<br />

WAVES OF VARIED EMOTIONS<br />

Approving final designs is a release<br />

of much more than sketches and<br />

samples. After the exhilaration<br />

of establishing production in an<br />

unfamiliar place, it was time to<br />

leave Ubud and retreat to a world<br />

of glorious distraction along the<br />

coast. Vastly different from the<br />

central jungles that had become<br />

familiar, Seminyak is a truly unique<br />

shopping, foodie, and party mecca.<br />

There is an unapologetic vibrancy<br />

to this scene that entices one’s<br />

curiosity and sends my bohemian<br />

heart soaring. The Prisoners of<br />

Saint Petersburg, an ever-evolving<br />

women’s fashion and accessories<br />

store, was a refreshing find in my<br />

search for a beautiful dress (also an<br />

excellent stop for lovers of curated<br />

prints, vintage-inspired sunglasses,<br />

and one-of-a-few pieces).<br />

Tucked away from the everpresent<br />

purr of commotion is Alila<br />

Seminyak, where I morphed into<br />

the next phase of my trip: beach<br />

mode. My face was met with the<br />

smells of paradise and salt water<br />

in their vast, open-air reception,<br />

which is both architecturally<br />

minimalist and opulent. In<br />

addition to the expansive suites and<br />

manicured grounds, Alila offers<br />

multiple unique aspects that make<br />

this property notably excellent.<br />

The concierge team extends an<br />

impressive list of offerings, tailored<br />

to their guests’ individual interests<br />

and priorities. My stay included a<br />

hands-on lesson on the traditions<br />

of Balinese culture in an ancient<br />

temple situated in the middle of<br />

their property, and finished with a<br />

sunset dinner at the newly launched<br />

(and highly recommended) Seasalt.<br />

This trip would not be complete<br />

without showing my mom the<br />

southern shore of Bali’s epic<br />

coastline. We traveled south on a<br />

winding road to our final destination<br />

– Karma Kandara. Designed<br />

with considerate appreciation of<br />

the land, the surroundings are<br />

dominated by staggered limestone<br />

cliffs that rise above the Indian<br />

Ocean. It is here that we steeped our<br />

senses in the slow pleasures of villa<br />

life, relishing the final days with<br />

sessions in the luxurious spa huts<br />

and soaks in our private pool. My<br />

brother and his friends popped in<br />

from Vietnam, which really put our<br />

ample three-story, four-bedroom<br />

villa and lush grounds to good use.<br />

On our last day, we wandered past<br />

monkeys, valleys, and viewpoints<br />

on a walkway that led to a tram,<br />

which brought us to the beach club.<br />

The collection would have to be<br />

delivered here, in the final hours<br />

of our trip. This of course was<br />

not planned, however the nervewracking<br />

delay that always seems to<br />

follow creative processes was well<br />

worth the wait.<br />

The first glimpse of the collection<br />

was met with celebratory cocktails<br />

and group hugs, yet this creative<br />

pilgrimage is just one spoke in a<br />

wheel that continues to roll my<br />

business forward. Looking ahead,<br />

this chapter is simply a draft - one I<br />

will rewrite each year in an attempt<br />

to perfect the process.<br />

But for now, I am at peace, finally<br />

holding a physical manifestation of<br />

my ideas in my hands.<br />

IMAGINATION AND DARING:<br />

First-ever Retrospective Exhibit of Designer Elsa<br />

Schiaparelli and Artist Salvador Dali<br />

Delight in the daring and irreverent works of two<br />

celebrated artists when Dali and Schiaparelli opened<br />

at The Dali, in St. Petersburg, FL on October 18, <strong>2017</strong>.<br />

The exhibit – presented in collaboration by The Dali<br />

Museum and Schiaparelli Paris features haute couture<br />

gowns and accessories, jewelry, paintings, drawings,<br />

objects and photos, as well as new designs by Bertrand<br />

Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. This will be the first<br />

exhibition dedicated to the creative relationship and<br />

works of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali – friends<br />

and collaborators that set Paris and the world ablaze with<br />

their groundbreaking visions.<br />

Elsa Schiaparelli was regarded as the most prominent<br />

figure in fashion between the two World Wars. Her<br />

designs deliberately subverted traditional notions of<br />

women’s roles and beauty, embracing and exaggerating the<br />

transgressive nature of fashion. Schiaparelli explored bold<br />

Surrealistic themes in her designs, heavily influenced by<br />

artists, especially Dali, with whom she often collaborated.<br />

The vibrant colors, experimental fabrics and elegant<br />

handmade decorations set her apart from other designers<br />

of the 1920s and 1930s. Some of the most notable clients<br />

for Schiaparelli’s haute couture designs included the<br />

Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson; heiress Daisy<br />

Fellowes; and actresses Mae West and Marlene Dietrich.<br />

aesthetic and production constituted<br />

“Having recently opened the Frida<br />

Kahlo at The Dali exhibition, which<br />

presents the painfully beautiful<br />

work of Frida Kahlo, we find a type<br />

of resonance between these two<br />

iconic women: they both reflected<br />

and influenced the times and social<br />

zeitgeist in which they lived and<br />

worked.”<br />

Schiaparelli wrote that she “invented”<br />

her dresses, and the designs were<br />

known for their elegant and daring<br />

aesthetic combined with exquisite<br />

craftsmanship – a marriage of new<br />

ideas with traditional craft. Her designs<br />

were like the paintings of Dali in that<br />

they combined renaissance precision<br />

with wild imagination and dreamlike<br />

visions. Their fashion and art both<br />

delighted and shocked the senses and<br />

that approach was a trademark of their<br />

collaborations; their works embodied<br />

a sense of freedom and possibility that<br />

enlivened popular culture during a<br />

tumultuous time.<br />

In 1954, Schiaparelli closed her<br />

couture house and devoted herself to<br />

writing her autobiography – Shocking<br />

Life – written in the third-person, like<br />

Dali’s own biography. After remaining<br />

quiescent for more than five decades,<br />

Maison Schiaparelli was reopened<br />

in 2012 at 21 Place Vendome, the<br />

very place where Elsa Schiaparelli<br />

left it. Today, Schiaparelli continues<br />

the designer’s legacy by creating<br />

alluring and surprising designs for the<br />

Hollywood elite and private clients<br />

around the world. A selection of these<br />

new designs including fashion and<br />

jewelry pieces will be featured in the<br />

show.<br />

Dali and Schiaparelli will run through<br />

January 14, 2018, followed by the<br />

opening of Dali and Duchamp, which<br />

premieres at The Dali on Feb 10, 2018.<br />
